hen applying for jobs, many fresh graduates often find themselves in a tricky Catch-22 situation: although they may be full of bright ideas, the job stresses the importance of practical work experience. How do they gain the necessary experience without getting a job in the first place? At the other end of the age range, people with a lot of valuable accumulated experience may feel they are being discriminated against when it comes to job applications simply because they are seen as “too old” – dinosaurs that will be resistant to innovation in a rapidly changing workplace. Fortunately, a sensible kind of pragmatism may prevail in the end – an employer will recognise the value of having staff with fresh ideas and attitudes on the workforce, provided that

complexities of running a country as huge as Indonesia in the 21st century?

Equally, a far-sighted employer will appreciate that so much time can be wasted in “reinventing the wheel” and that to have staff aboard who have “been there, done that” and can pass on the lessons learned yet still be open to new ideas can be very valuable.

When it comes to the apparent “handicap” of age, it is worth considering how an aging presidential candidate dealt with it way back in 1984 in the US: “I will not make age an issue of this campaign. I am not going to exploit, for political purposes, my opponent’s youth and inexperience,” 73-year-old candidate Ronald Reagan quipped at the start of one of the presidential debates with his much younger opponent, Walter Mondale.

In the world of politics, there seems to be a high premium placed on both youth and experience: The electorate warms to candidates who may offer a reformist approach, a departure from the established way of governing, yet at the same time, they will be wary about voting for someone who has little or no direct experience of the responsibilities at hand. And so it seems with the current pairings of candidates for the 2014 Indonesia presidential election. The country, it seems, is ready for change, but in which direction? Will the candidates’ commitment to reform be combined with a good understanding of the enormous

As campaigning continues, we will see over the coming months how the 2014 candidates are able to project their reformist ideas yet still maintain the confidence of the electorate if it decides to bestow upon them the weighty responsibilities of government. Let’s hope the upcoming debate is a genuine exploration of the key issues and does not degenerate into counter-productive mudslinging. (Jim Read)

And who are the other members of the band? Joy Moron has four members. Besides me, Dannisa plays synthesizer and glockenspiel, Rizki is on guitar, and the Engky is the drummer.

What is the name of the band about? It comes from two words: enjoy and moronic. It means enjoy the music with moronic or silly things. For example if we’re on the stage, we are playing music while playing with bubble guns and stuff. It’s a bit moronic right? Hehehe. It’s all about having fun.

How did you all meet? We met in my music studio and we began talking about the music we liked. In the end I invited them to form a band with an electropop

(pop music) in 2000. Around 2002 I was the singer in “New Folder” (AIU Records). And the latest is Joymoron. And have the other members been in many bands? Sabit: Rizki, the guitarist was in a band called “Alexandria”. Only me and Rizki were in bands before. And how did you find Dannisa or did she find you? We were looking for a female synthesizer player to be used as a sweetener on stage. And we met Dannisa. She is my friend’s girlfriend. And so we invited her to join the band. Yes she does look very sweet and goofy on stage with that bubble gun. You played some good original songs at The Beat Room, who writes them?

Thank you. I’m the songwriter. So what are your influences. Have you always liked New Wave music? Yes I’ve always liked it and my greatest influences are bands like The Cure, Blur, Morrissey and Pulp. I also like Britpop music. Have you released an album yet? Yes, we released one last year. But it’s an indie album. It had 13 tracks and it was called Listen! Has it had any airplay or sales? Not a lot of airplay, and we sell the album ourselves at shows or online through social media. You can catch Joymoron at The Beat Room at Fez Dungeon on Tuesday June 10.

Founded by three friends in 2012, today the Rebel Education Project (REP) RnB crew consists of six members and will launch their inaugural EP this month. The Beat caught up with them to talk about the local RnB scene and they clear the room of the misconceptions of RnB.

TBJ: What’s the message behind the lyrics of your music? REP: Most of our songs explore the many social issues that don’t normally get brought up in mainstream media. We have a song called “Muak” (Fed Up), and talks about things that we are fed up with on a daily basis. TBJ: Where do you get your inspiration/ influences? REP: We are inspired by a variety of music genres performed by many musicians. This has a profound effect on our music as it has made our sound rich and diverse in style and substance. TBJ: How do you see the RnB scene in Indonesia? REP: The hip hop and RnB scene in Indonesia is growing each year, especially this year we see a lot of new local hip hop talent emerging. I

28

think this is the moment for hip hop and RnB to make it big in Indonesia. TBJ: What are some of your most memorable moments on stage/ entertaining a crowd? REP: Our time on stage, big or small, has its memorable moments. But as people say, the first will always be the most memorable. TBJ: What can the fans expect from REP in the near future? REP: We are continuously developing our work and giving our best to our listeners. After our first EP is released this month, we have already planned to go back into the studio before the end of the year to work on our next album. We can’t stop and we won’t stop. TBJ: What are some misconceptions of REP or RnB that you would like to clear out?

REP: Hip hop is often times considered music that serves a particular community, and the images in hip hop music videos portrays an image of all things glamorous and bling. The reality is that hip hop is a movement to create awareness and to highlight the cultural struggles of the people. TBJ: What is your message for your fans? REP: Without you there will be no REP. So we thank all of you who have supported us. TBJ: What is your advice for those who want to make it as an RnB artist? REP: We are continuously learning new things, so I think the most important thing is to pay attention to the many progressions in musical style and dynamics in society. TBJ: How do you choose the artists you collaborate with, especially for the upcoming Beat Room night at Fez Dungeon? REP: We collaborate with artists that represent the same music and point of view. Those who

have a solid fan base and listeners so we can get a good crowd going too. TBJ: What can we expect from REP in The Beat Room? REP: We understand that our performance has to be more than about good sound, but also about delivering great visual show. We want to try to bring a new concept each time we go on stage, and we believe this way we will satisfy the crowd. CLASSICAL

Heny Janawati:

Being A Mezzosoprano By Erza S.T.

I

n the classical music world that is dominated by sopranos, Heny Janawati who is originally from Bali decided to be a serious mezzosoprano singer. She was so determined to make her singing dreams come true that she decided to study at University of British Columbia in 2002, where she received a music bachelor degree. She was the first Balinese opera singer to study in North America and her operatic roles span from Carmen to Jezibaba of Dvorak’s Rusalka. She then enrolled for a master’s degree specializing in opera performance at UBC under guidance of renowned coloratura soprano Nancy Hermiston. After performing for North American and European audiences, Heny Janawati finally returned to Indonesia for good. The Beat Jakarta immediately sat down to have a tete-a-tete with this stunning mezzosoprano to hear about her stories and future plans.

30

www.beatmag.com

Who inspired you to sing? My inspiration is my late father, Ngurah Ardjana, who was one of the most prominent Balinese musicians. He was the one who introduced me and taught me music, especially singing. What does singing do to you? Singing is like a drug to me! It makes me feel so high and happy. I think singing also keeps me young, as I have to learn many different elements and memorize my music. When did you know that singing was a life career path? I don’t know the exact moment, but the more I sang on stage the more I fell in love with it. Was it difficult to pursue a classical music education in Bali? Is this why you went to Canada?

CLASSICAL

As you know, Bali is known for its traditional music and culture, so not only was it difficult to pursue classical music education, but also no one was interested in it at the time. I was lucky to have received a sponsor to study classical music, specifically opera performances in North America. How does it feel pursuing classical music education in North America? Do you think they have a better system than in Europe? Studying classical music with the North American system was a great experience, because they take things seriously! In my case, I studied opera performance as a major at the University of British Columbia, Canada and I was very lucky to be able to perform major opera roles. The only drawback was that the competition among students was very tight as there were almost 150 students in the voice program. This can be a good experience for some people and bad for the rest. In comparison to the European conservatoire, they have quite a different system. I think the students in Europe are focused more into the skill itself and they receive more intense training than in the North American system where students have to split their focus between academics and music training. Were you tempted to stay in North America longer and build a career there? No, because there are not enough opera singing jobs in North America. There are only a few opera houses and they mainly only produce four operas per season. If you want to get a bigger slice of cake, go to Europe! In the classical music world where sopranos rule, how does a mezzosoprano singer survive and shine? Hahaha... being a mezzo-soprano is not

so bad! There are millions of sopranos out there and they are fighting for a role. I’ve seen so many of my soprano friends in tears for not getting the role they wanted. That doesn’t mean that there are not enough great mezzo-sopranos out there, we are just made more like boutique clothing, specially made and have our own voice colors. The mezzo voice is like wine, the older it is, the better the taste! Coming back to Indonesia, what do you see is the biggest challenge? Hmm...That is a tough question. I think the interest in classical music, particularly for opera is still very low. My goal is to create a big plan to introduce this beautiful art and making it more accessible for the Indonesian audience. I think it all depends on how I wrap this “Opera Candy” in. Is there any future project that you can share with us? Well, I have some projects that are being planned, but not ready to be shared. But for sure, it will involve opera! My very last performance was held on May 25, the grand opening concert of Balai Kertanegara in South Jakarta. What is your biggest dream? Well, I think my biggest and wildest dream is to establish an internationally recognized Indonesian opera company. There are so many great classical singers in Indonesia who are ready to be discovered and trained as opera singers. And if you were not a mezzo soprano, what would you be? A businesswoman! www.beatmag.com

Whatever the project du jour, so much of what he writes could be interpreted as either fiercely confessional, or confusingly abstract, giving him an air of mystery that continues to set him apart from other music biz peers. As is so often the case, artists churn out their best work in times of turmoil or romantic despair, but on Everyday Robots – the first truly solo LP of his career, Albarn (now approaching 50) appears well grounded and in more of a pensive mood, calling on key locations that have shaped his life thus far. In preparation for recording, Albarn and his pal (Nigerian drummer) Remi Kabaka biked the wintry streets of Leytonstone to revisit a number of his childhood haunts. Perhaps most notable being the Hollow Ponds – an area of shadowy woodland frequented by the young artist, which gave way to the melancholic album track of the same name. Also on the route, his West London stomping grounds and the song “You & Me”, where Class A addiction became a way of coping with the pressures of fame: “Jab jab, digging out a hole in Westbourne Grove/tinfoil and the lighter”. In a musical sense, both songs are key to setting the tempo for the rest of the album, which sounds like Albarn is stranded in some post apocalyptic junkyard making noises out of bits of old audio equipment. Cassette drawers clicking shut, broken plastic appliances being dragged by their power cables across other bits of knackered VHS paraphernalia, and I swear there’s the longforgotten sound of an old dial up telephone bookending each stanza of the stunning “Lonely Press Play” – a song which is lifted by soft fingerpicked guitar ditties and Albarn’s soulful Thames Estuary murmur. Mixed in with the gloomy confessional flashes are more upbeat allegorical accounts of parakeets (“Parakeet”), submarines (“The Selfish Giant”), baby elephants (“Mr. Tembo”) and passive aggressive 80’s video game baddies (“Hostiles”), meaning that really, we’re still none the wiser about when Damon Albarn is baring his soul or just mucking about. When the results sound this wonderful though, none of that really seems to matter. Dan Ashcroft

Some sci-fi, a little sequel, and a very ambitious adaptation.

by: pande

Well, summer is here and we have some blockbusters to prove it. First, it’s Groundhog day with Tom Cruise in an exosuit combating aliens. Next is two undercover cops in 21 Jump Street who now infiltrate a college. And last but not least, a raw take on the timeless story of young Julius Caesar. Please check when they hit the big screen at www.21cineplex.com, get the DVDs, or do the smart thing and figure out torrents.

Edge of Tomorrow Action, Sci-Fi. Director: Doug Liman. Writer: Christopher McQuarrie (screenplay), Jez Butterworth (screenplay), JohnHenry Butterworth (screenplay), Hiroshi Sakurazaka (novel “All You Need Is Kill”). Cast: Tom Cruise, Emily Blunt, Bill Paxton, Brendan Gleeson. Similar to the Japanese novel from which it was adapted, this film tells about a near future where a global war with aliens has broken out. Tom Cruise who plays Lt. Col. Bill Cage is trapped in a time loop where he dies to wake up fighting the same battle again and again with better skills to face his enemies each time he is reborn. Directed by Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity and Mr. & Mrs. Smith) , this sci-fi film also features Emily Blunt (The Adjustment Bureau) as Cage’s trainer and a special forces member who gives an edge to this production. Expect to see a combination of Groundhog Day and Oblivion kind of visuals.

22 Jump Street Action, Comedy, Crime. Director: Phil Lord, Christopher Miller. Writer: Michael Bacall (screenplay and story), Oren Uziel (screenplay), Rodney Rothman (screenplay), Jonah Hill (story), Patrick Hasburgh and Stephen J. Cannell (TV series 21 Jump Street). Cast: Jonah Hill, Channing Tatum, Ice Cube. After going through high school twice, buddy-cops Jenko and Schmidt finally get admitted to college. By now, we can easily guess that they are still at it, going undercover to bust a secret drug ring, this time at a local college. Expect the same chemistry between our two leads just like in their previous case and see how they make it through college. Like the original, it’s directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller and we this sequel is going to be filled with some new jokes.

Jail Caesar Drama, History. Director: Paul Schoolman. Writer: Paul Schoolman. Cast: Derek Jacobi, John Kani, Alice Krige, Warren Adler, Peter John Christiaans, Richard Clifford, Grant Swanby. This feature film will take you to three of the world’s most notorious working prisons in the world – in Cardiff (Wales), Alberta (Canada) and Cape Town (South Africa). It depicts the formative years of the famous Roman dictator, Julius Caesar; how he fights for survival in the world ruled by gangs and filled with debauchery, something parallel to the prisons today. For this, the director Paul Schoolman has tactfully assembled highly respected actors as well as other supporting casts, 90% of which are real inmates and wardens. This remarkable piece has won at the Berlin Independent Film Festival 2013.

How I Stopped Worrying and Learned To Love Black Lipstick

W

by: dhnshrtn

hen it comes to Beyoncé (Queen of the World and Monarch of my Heart), I have a hard time pinning down what is my favorite look of her’s . Was it the flawless barely-there flair we saw in “Crazy in Love”? Was it the easygoing and confident Americana appeal in “XO”? Or was it the sultry smokyeyed sexiness from “Partition”? With a face as perfect as hers, I doubt it’ll be possible to actually settle on a favorite look for life, but one of the looks that definitely makes the cut are the wing tip eyeliner and black lipstick she sported in the video for Lady Gaga’s “Telephone”.

46

www.beatmag.com

So while I loved the look on her, I knew that black lipstick was not something I was keen on purchasing anytime soon. But fast forward to a few years later, when I read Pablohoney’s interview of Angelajess (where there was a brief mention of how Angelajess used a black lipstick to mix with her arsenal of reds) and Putri’s experiment with black lip gloss: I took it as a sign to take the plunge and got a tube of Anna Sui #060 of my own. After plenty of initial disappointment (the product was unavailable in the South Jakarta malls I frequented), I finally found that the Anna Sui counter in Metro Mall Taman Anggrek was abundant in black lipstick. I bought a tube without giving it a second thought, but after experimenting with it, I immediately regretted not buying two of them.

Friday Fragrance:

Elie Saab L’Eau Couture

by: dhnshrtn

O

ne thing I like about designer fragrance is how the scent is basically an extension of the designer’s style. Elie Saab is a favorite among red carpet starlets and brides-to-be everywhere for his designs.

Top notes: Light, citrus scents from Calabrian bergamot, magnolia, and orange blossom

Over the years, he has refined his signature look: this characteristic look involves light and luxurious materials, a silhouette that’s skin-tight on top and free-flowing towards the bottom, and an abundance of intricate floral and embellishment work. The people who look to him for their dream dresses probably also idealize a canon of traits often applied to Kate Middleton or Disney Princesses: ladylike, ethereal, honeyed articulation.

Base notes: Green almond, vanilla infusion

I think it’s no surprise if the same group of women end up flocking to his latest perfume, the Elie Saab L’Eau Couture. The fragrance is poured into a pretty faceted crystalline bottle, very similar to the bottling of its older sister, the Elie Saab Le Parfum. Like it’s older sister, the L’Eau Couture is fresh and floral, but with a less woody note. Its perfumer, Francis Kurkdjian, wanted to create something “…sophisticated, [with] sensual freshness, far removed from the conventions found in fragrances usually created in this repertoire.” Whoa. That’s a pretty big claim but does it live up to it? Judge for yourself with this brief breakdown of its key ingredients:

48

www.beatmag.com

Middle notes: Orange blossom. This is the same scent that made the Elie Saab Le Parfum so popular

And for the verdict? I like this scent, but that’s because I’m partial to light florals and pretty bottles. It’s a great daytime fragrance that’s perfect for spring, so if you like floral and citrusy scents — and if you liked the Elie Saab Le Parfum — there’s a very good chance that you’ll like this one too. Elie Saab has been winning the fragrance game for me so far, and I hope his winning s t r e a k continues. Is there another fashion house whose d e s i g n s and bottled scents are you winning you over?

e v o L Lazy Girls

Cream Blush Hi. My name is Dhany, and I am a lazy girl.

by: dhnshrtn

I

hate waking up before 8am. I hate hanging up the laundry to dry. I hate waiting more than eight minutes for pasta to cook, and I would rather contract hypothermia than get up to reach the air con remote control to turn it off. So you can see why that when it comes to makeup, I try to keep it simple too. Cream blushes have been a great solution to my lazy girl dilemma, because I don’t need a brush to apply it. If I mess up when applying it, all I have to do is dab the color out until I reach an intensity I’m happy with. Four pink cream blushes that have made my heavy rotation list are the Oriflame Studio Artist Cream Blush, Maybelline Dream Bouncy Blush, Stila Convertible Color, and NYX Rouge Cream Blush.

Let Your Color Personality Shine with Maybelline COLORSHOW by: dhnshrtn

What’s your favorite color?

I

know it’s fluff armchair psychology, but there’s an ages-old theory out there that suggests the decisions behind you picking out your favorite color is also telling of your personality. After sifting through the internet (read: top ten search results on Google), here are some assessments I can make about some popular favorite colors: Do you like red? You’re probably an extroverted and straight-crazy adrenaline junkie who thinks there is no greater pain than having to sit still for hours on end. You would make a lousy auditor, but a good participant on a Japanese game show. You might be clinically insane. Your spirit animal is the honey badger. Are you partial to blue? You’re conservative, sober, and level-headed. You probably think it’s perfectly sensible to wear a long-sleeved turtleneck on a scorching summer’s day. There is a chance you might be the second most boring person within any 20-meter radius (kidding). Your spirit animal is Sailor Mercury. Are you a fan of green? You are social, down-to-earth, and intelligent. You find safety in conversations with other sentient carbon-based lifeforms and enjoy being part of multiple social groups. Basically, you are a needy party animal. Your spirit animal is Frankenstein’s monster. I was reminded of this fun color personality theory at the unveiling of Velove Vexia as the new brand ambassador of Maybelline Colorshow. If you haven’t heard of it before, Maybelline Colorshow is a range of high-impact colors at low prices. If you’ve been looking to

department store brands for lipstick, eyeliner, and nail polish in loud, non-neutral colors, you can say goodbye to all that and hello to the Maybelline counter at your favorite drugstore. The lipsticks in the Colorshow range come in 15 highly-pigmented shades that with a semimatte finish that feel like a nourishing lip balm. The colors you see above are Party Pink, Pink Please, and Downtown Red. Another favorite of ours was the selection of 30 nail polish shades in different finishes. We tried out the solid cotton candy pink (Constant Candy) and Spanish blue (Shocking Seas), and they needed about three coats before reaching full opacity. However, the darker shades with a bit of a glittery gold finish to them (Wine & Dine and Buried Treasure) went on full smoothly. Basically, the Colorshow series is a good way of testing the waters before you make a pricey splurge on an unconventional shade. For instance, say you see a nail polish from Ciaté that you love but aren’t sure you can pull off. Before you spend ~175k on a bottle of nail polish in a shade that’s out of your comfort zone, you can pick up something similar from the wallet friendly Colorshow series and test run that for a week. If you love it, great! If you didn’t — oh let’s face it, what are the chances of anyone completely hating a nail polish in any shade? www.beatmag.com

three buns burgers in senopati Three Buns by Potato Head is a new fast food, chilled out dining venue with a few twists thrown in for good measure. The truck food phenomena, reborn recently in The States, and now sweeping most of the planet, appears to have taken root in one of Jakarta’s main food areas, Senopati. An old food truck (which maybe could have done with a paint job before finding its new location) stands at the front door of the new Three Buns. The truck isn’t involved in the cooking but only takes care of your bill and cashier. The open kitchen behind glass is buzzing and the terraced dining area was equally abuzz when we arrived. The dining consists of a variety burgers. I chose a Burningman Burger that promised jalepenos but arrived with scorching chili that almost burned the skin from my mouth. Burning man indeed. There are six burgers to choose from at a price around Rp100k. Other easy food like chicken wings, chips and salads are also available but there aren’t many. It must be one of the smallest and easily manageable menus in town. Three Buns is a fun kinda place and if smallish gourmet burgers, cocktails and home made sodas is your thing, it’s gotta be the place for you. Three Buns | Jl. S

ushi restaurants are surely abundant in Jakarta, but one place has carved out a niche. Genki Sushi was first established in Japan in 1990. At the moment, there are 140 Genki Sushi restaurants in Japan. International expansion of the brand saw the opening of branches in Hawaii, Singapore, Hong Kong, Kuwait, and China. And this past April, the first Genki Sushi in Indonesia was opened by PT Mitra Adi Perkasa TBK (MAP), located at the basement level of the always trendy Plaza Senayan. The décor is bright, with a modern and minimalist design, and light wood all round. The restaurant uses the popular conveyor belt system to bring the sushi right to the table, but

Genki Sushi is taking it to another level. First of all, instead of a bulky menu, an iPad mini is used to display the food and their prices. You can place your order through the tablet (also to call for service and the bill). Then, there are two levels of high speed conveyor belts called the Kousuku Lane, delivering your orders on replicas of the Shinkansen train and a Formula One racing car; it’s enough to amuse the young and the young at heart. Japanese food, and sushi in particular, goes perfectly with a cup of hot Ocha. High quality green tea powder is provided, and all you have to do is pour hot water from the little faucet right on your table, into your cup.

FOOD The restaurant is filled to the brim every lunch and dinner time with local and Japanese patrons alike, which is a good sign. Dining here is a moveable feast for the senses; as the conveyor belts delivers inventive rolls, fresh cuts of sashimi, seaweed salads, and other delectable goodies before your eyes. You can pick and choose your order from the comfort of your stool using the iPad. And from the kitchen, skilled sushi chefs slice, dice, and wrap each colorful creation per order, using only the best and freshest ingredients (most of them imported directly from Japan). And whoosh! Your order arrives on your table within just a couple of minutes. No dishes going round and round pass your table here.

Each dish costs as low as 12k, going up all the way to 125k. The sushi roll options are surely plentiful. There are sashimi dishes as well, of course. Should you feel like having non-sushi items, you won’t feel left out at all. There are salads, miso soups, rice bowls, udons, deep fried salmon skin, and beyond. There’s something for everyone. And don’t leave without trying the delicious Mochi Ice Cream desserts! Take away and party packs are also available, just the thing for your office or home gatherings. For a fun and affordable Japanese dining experience, Genki Sushi is a brilliant addition to the culinary scene in the capital. Oishii! (Budi Iskandar)

ince its establishment, Immigrant has matured into becoming one of Jakarta’s main nightlife destinations. And now, proudly rekindling its epicurean roots, they are introducing The Immigrant Dining Room. Immigrant has undergone a facelift to make way for a brand-new dining concept. Everything about the décor, from the mood lighting to the brown leather booth seats is reminiscent of a retro chic New York bistro. It has a certain sultry and sexy setting that provides a nice respite from the busy life below in the street. In the words of Immigrant founder Christoph Darjanto, the Dining Room marks a new milestone in the history of Immigrant as a social establishment: “Five years is an important point in the journey of many institutions, and we have taken in our clientele’s input for a space where cultures and cliques can commune while tasting the best that contemporary dining has to offer.

FOOD This we seek to present in the Immigrant Dining Room.” The bar welcomes you as you step inside. And speaking of which, the skilled bar staff have come up with some libations that’ll tickle your fancy. The Whiskey Sour is a nice mix of bourbon, lemon, sugar, and egg white, while the Frozen Green Apple Daquiri combines Granny Smith Apple with rum, lime, and sugar. But do try one of the signature cocktails like the GTO; gin, triple sec, orange, grape, lemon, lime, and grapefruit, or the interestingly named Peeping B*tch, a blend of vodka, ginger, cranberry, and lime. All are priced at 98k. As for the food, we began with the Portobello Mushroom (70k). The succulent mushroom is baked with smoked beef chorizo, mozzarella cheese, thyme, and double cream. The Chicken Salad (80k) is also noteworthy; grilled marinated chicken breast, roasted bell peppers, zucchini, eggplant, tomatoes, cucumber, mixed lettuce, tossed with Asianinspired soy vinaigrette dressing. Similar to the salad, you can take it to another

level with a sandwich called the Mediterranean Chicken Panini (90k); grilled Cajun chicken breast, grilled zucchini, roasted bell peppers, smoked tomatoes, lettuce, herb cream spread, and served with a side of fried potato skins. There’s a surprisingly tasty dip accompaniment made with sour cream and Thai chili sauce. As for dessert, we picked the Trio Mini Fondant (85k); a sweet dish that may look simple but rather complex in taste. In a very good way. Another thing worth mentioning is that the staff here is attentive and knowledgeable. It’s good to see that they are passionate about what they’re offering. The Happy Hour here is available everyday, 4 – 10 pm, with great deals on selections of drinks. For our next visit, we gotta try Immigrant’s Off The Grill selections. The choices of steak look like a carnivore’s dream! And with a lounge adjacent but separate from the dining room opening soon, we look forward to another new phase of Immigrant. (Budi Iskandar)

With an artistic ambiance, the vibe here is sophisticated yet relaxed, and artsy but far from stuffy. Be amazed by the wonderful artwork on display; from photographs to sculptures, to a giant root of a century-old tree which stands proudly as a centerpiece. You can even find works of the great Indonesian sculpture artist Nyoman Nuarta here. They all add a certain dramatic element to the room. The kitchen is led by Spanish-born award-winning Chef Ivan Tarrago. He began his culinary career in Catalonia, and in 2001 he joined ‘Rincon de Diego’ in Cambril, Spain, a Michelin Star-awarded Spanish fine dining restaurant, where he learned his trade. After traveling around the world and working for a number of prestigious awardwinning restaurants, he made his way to Indonesia. Chef Ivan draws inspiration from the Mediterranean food culture, but his menu reflects an amalgam of Spanish, Italian, French, and of course, Asian influences. His creations have won lots of Jakarta’s foodies' hearts. Take one of his starters for example; the Indian Inspired Potato Samosa (65k). Chef Ivan took the vegetarian favorite up a notch with some tapas-inspired dips. The combination is just amazing! FOOD on top of grilled zucchini, and doused with Menado-inspired ‘dabu-dabu’ sauce, but infused with some olive oil. Not all of the dishes are fusions. The Carne De Lux Pizza (130k) is as traditional as it gets; a tasty mix of beef tenderloin, black pepper, cherry tomatoes, rocket leaves, and topped with parmesan flakes. And should you crave a more local fare, Chef Ivan’s team has created some favorites like the Beef Ribs ‘Penyet’ style (160k)! As for dessert, the Negev Chocolate Bar (60k) is a soulsatisfying sweet dish; divine chocolate cream embedded with crunchy biscuit. It looks like a piece of art, but we guarantee you’ll find joy in devouring it in no time! You can wash it all down with some healthy mocktails like the Vitalizer (55k) – a blend of cucumber, apple, and mint, or the Zinger (65k) - fresh orange, apple, and carrot. Affectionately nicknamed “Bebop,” the 14MP quadcopter-mounted camera offers smooth video even when being buffeted and swayed by wind. It does so by capturing extra video with its fish-eye lens across a 180-degree viewpoint and then allowing onboard software to isolate the desired frame. The camera connects through Wi-Fi and can even stream directly to the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset. The Bebop is expected to release at just over $300 in the fourth quarter of this year.
