Even though there wasn’t a decisive winner, we can all be happy that the recent elections went well and without any major issues – unless your candidate didn’t get anywhere of course. As Jim Read says in his article inside, now the horse trading begins before we get to the presidential elections in July where we’ll find out who the next boss will be. With the continuing peaceful elections being held in the country over the past years one day soon nobody will even mention the possibility of trouble due to there being the national vote as they do now. That’s a true sign of a stable and prosperous democracy and may it go on like that for years to come. Our Tuesday night original music gig is off and running at Fez Dungeon, Kemang. It started at the end of last month with Sajama Cut and Tektona playing consecutive nights with their support bands and DJ Wingnarada spinning rock mash ups between bands. For the immediate future though we will be holding The Beat Room, the name of the night, each second and fourth Tuesday of the month. That’s May 13 and May 27 this month. Something else I would like to point out is that after being involved in both worlds of electronic and live music for many years we had a good think of what the differences are and why dance music is getting more popular than live music every year with punters. One point that surfaced was that people generally want to be entertained when they go out but also want to have a chat or be able to socialize too. The usual format of one band playing straight for 45 mins or an hour becomes a little intense so we decided to use a new format where each band plays two sets of less than 30 mins and then our resident rock DJ plays in between. So far it seems to be working as punters get a good look at each band and the chance to socialize to the maximus while they are at it. We hope to see you down at The Beat Room at Fez Dungeon soon. We also kicked off the The Beat Girl Roadshow last month. We had some laughs at the Balboni show which went off rather well and you can see the photos of that event and many others inside the ThereThen section at the back of the mag. The Beat Girl Roadshow will be back soon. Have a great month of May.

Palang Pintu Festival 2014 Every year before the anniversary of the city of Jakarta, a series of events are held, one of which is the Palang Pintu Festival. Betawi Dance and Palang Pintu are two things at the event that are always held in Kemang, South Jakarta. The festival is annual before the anniversary of Jakarta which falls on June 22. Palang Pintu festival aims to preserve and introduce to the public Betawi culture. This Festival introduces a variety of elements of Betawi culture ranging from the arts to the music like a tanjidor, pencak silat (martial arts), Betawi cuisine like kerak telor and beer pletok. This year, Palang Pintu Festival will be held on June 7 – 8 and along the event held, Kemang street will be officially closed and guests will have to park their vehicles and walk.

SCOOP Asian Dream Cup 2014 Asian Dream Cup is a football game that aims to raise money for charity. After last year’s was held in China, this year’s Asian Dream Cup matches will be held at the Bung Karno Jakarta, Indonesia on June 2. Park Ji Sung, top soccer players born in South Korea, established the JS Foundation in February 2011 with the spirit and love of football he wants to share with other people and foundations owned by Park Ji Sung has announced convening a fourth Asian Dream Cup. Megadeth Re-Schedule Veteran thrash metal group from the United States, Megadeth will again meet fans in Jakarta. After the release of the fourteenth album, Super Collider, they were supposed to appear on March 5, but cancelled the tour in Indonesia along with other countries. They rescheduled for August according to their twitter account. And so Original Productions as the promoter announced that Killing Road World Tour 2014 will back on in August. Dave Mustaine also said that he and the band will be back to Jakarta, so stick around and wait for the next announcement from the promoter.
Jakarta Fashion and Food Festival 2014 JFFF (read: je ef tri) is a grand celebration organized by Summarecon Agung Tbk PT. and Jakarta Provincial Government through the Jakarta Tourism Agency and supported by the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy and the Ministry of Trade. This year, JFFF will be held at Mal Kelapa Gading, La Piazza and Harris Hotel from May 9 to June 1. There will be a fashion extravaganza featuring 11 fashion designers at the Fashion Village which located in Mal Kelapa Gading 3 and 5. Moreover, in 2013 Don dropped dance floor bombs on Axwell’s Axtone label, Nicky Romero’s Protocol Recordings, Steve Angello’s Size X imprint and several tracks on the Spinnin’ Records label. Warner Brothers also asked Don to create the worldwide theme song for the highly anticipated Batman Arkham Origins game. The track and the accompanying video became an instant viral hit. Hailing from Los Angeles, Mackenzie Johnson, better known as MAKJ, uncovered a passion for mixing and DJing at only 15 years of age. While living overseas in China as a professional race car driver, the teenager grabbed hold of his first set of Technics 1200 Turntables. Fast forward nine years later, a simple peak at his Facebook profile page will show that he’s currently busy touring the States, only staying in one city each night and moving on to the next. Fedde Le Grand
Just fresh, a few hours after landing in Jakarta, and moments prior to manning the decks at Dragonfly, The Beat caught up with Dutch DJ, Fedde Le Grand. It is Le Grand’s second time to visit Jakarta and Dragonfly, where he first came four years ago. Currently the world’s number 29 DJ, Le Grand is in the midst of his Asian tour, coming fresh from Hong Kong, and after Jakarta will hit up Singapore and Kuala Lumpur. What does he have to say about playing in clubs versus festivals? And what was his first big break? Read on to find out. Text and Photos: Darren Dylan

FEATURE TBJ: What’s your take with what’s currently happening with dance music, particularly in Asia? FLG: I think it’s great that it’s spreading like wildfire. It’s an amazing time for dance music, as it is going global. I think it has something to do with American pop music that has embraced dance music, which spread around the world, and the whole world gets reintroduced to dance music. By American pop stars embracing dance music it gives the genre a whole new vibe. TBJ: How do you pick who to collaborate with? FLG: It flows naturally. I’d meet with musicians in events and festivals, talk with them, and if our music is in tune then a possible collaboration might just take place some time in the future. I don’t care if it’s a well known DJ or a newcomer - I just want to work with people that I have a personal relationship with, with people I really like. TBJ: Who inspires you? FLG: It’s always different. I think it’s more interesting to get in touch with different sounds and experiences, because it will make your music more colorful. If you look and follow too much at what’s going on in the scene, then you’ll end up sounding like everybody else. TBJ: Which venue would you rather play at: clubs or festivals? FLG: I like playing in both. Festivals are very impressive with many people, in clubs it’s way more personal. I actually like doing longer sets and I can do it in clubs. I think thats the problem in festivals; I can only do a shorter play. Nonetheless, festivals are great with a lot of energy, but I also like playing in clubs where I can make eye contact with people. TBJ: Two words to describe your music? FLG: “Erratic”: I try to never be too straight in my music. “Quirky”: I’d try to approach a weird angle.
TBJ: Tell us about your set for tonight. FLG: I never have a pre-planned fix set, because it all depends with my interaction with the crowd. I have something in mind but it’s more important to go with the flow. It’s important to harness the vibe from the crowd, because I believe they are the ones that dictate where the night is going. TBJ: Tell us about your experience in this year’s Ultra Music Festival in Miami recently, we understand you dropped six new tracks. FLG: Ultra is one of my favorite festivals in the world and this time was not any different, it was really good. Regarding the six new tracks it always gets scary when playing new stuff because you never know how the crowd will reactespecially in front of such a huge crowd. And because it’s their first time hearing it, their initial reaction is the most honest one you’ll ever get. I was super excited that everything went well and it played out how I hoped it would go. Each new track had its “place” in the set. TBJ: What do you think was your first big break? FLG: For me personally, I think my first big break was when I got “Get this Feeling” out because that was my first track that got picked up in Holland. And it was the first record on my own label, Flamingo records. For me that was very valuable, even though it didn’t do much internationally but it got me hosting parties all over Holland. Then “Let Me Think About It” was the third track I got in the UK charts. This was important for me because it proved that I wasn’t just a one hit wonder with “Put Your Hands Up For New York”, and that I was here to stay. TBJ: What’s in the works? FLG: This year will be about my new album, where I’ve already previewed six of my new tracks in Ultra. Interesting stuff is coming out, and I believe one in particular is going to shock the world.

She’s more than just a 175cm tall, pretty face as you will find out right here. Where are you from and how old are you? Wulan: My mom’s Chinese/Sumatran and my dad is mixed NTB/Portuguese. I was born in Palembang but grew up in Jakarta. I’m 24 years old. What are you studying and where? Psychology at Esa Unggul University. How many languages do you speak? Bahasa, English and Portuguese. What do you do in your spare time? I like playing video games, watching movies, hanging-out with some friends, go to the gym or swimming. I like to travel too if I get the time. What’s your favorite place to hang out during the day and then at night? Well I don’t really like to hit the clubs unless for special occasions. I do love to hang out at malls though. I usually go for coffee or lunch to places like Marche and Sushi Tei. I like night spots like Lucy in the Sky, Skye, Cloud, and Level 8.
Tell us about your modeling career. Where do you work and how is it? I have been modeling since I was a kid. I did a lot of competitions at school, malls, etc. I started my professional career with John Robert Power in 2007. Then I was with Posture Management, but now I’m with I Am Management.

It takes two (or more) to We all engage in horse-trading without realising it most of the time
It’s
spring (at least in the northern hemisphere), when a young man’s thoughts turn to ... building a workable political coalition. In this case, the (relatively) young man is none other than incumbent Jakarta Governor Joko “Jokowi” Widodo, named as PDI-P’s presidential candidate for 2014, but whose party only narrowly won the legislative election on April 9, according to quick-count results. So narrowly, Jokowi will need to find other political parties with which to form a coalition, as none of the parties crossed the threshold of winning 20 per cent of the legislative seats or 25 per cent of the popular vote, which would have enabled them to contest the presidential election in their own right. Jokowi is therefore not the only one in this position, so the coming weeks will see some intensive horsetrading (or coalition-building, to express it more politely). The parties will dance a carefully choreographed minuet where raw calculation is tempered by the realities of political give-and-take. To extend the metaphor, it could also be said that the parties will be doing a political tango in smoke-filled rooms, showing that it

takes at least two, or maybe more, to tango successfully. At least the air in the rooms may be cleaner this time if the city’s no-smoking bylaws are properly observed, as of course they always are in the capital’s public places ... What the political parties may be doing now is something we all do in our everyday lives, for it’s rare that we can have it our own way all the time: As a driver, you may have to give way to another road user at peak times in order to keep a traffic queue moving; at work you may agree to cover for a colleague who needs to take time off, on the understanding that person will do the same for you when you’re in a similar situation. Just as we’ve learned the art of compromise simply to get through the day and avoid arguments, so the parties will try to reach some kind of accommodation with what they might otherwise regard as foes or rivals for the ultimate prize: political power and influence within the central government. An ability to compromise requires tolerance of difference in others and being prepared to engage in a bit of give-and-take to arrive at an acceptable solution. In that sense the everyday compromises we reach – as in politics – are all about the art of the possible. (Jim Read)

of Classical Tunes

or the very first time ever, the month of May in Jakarta this year will be filled with classical music concerts organized by The Resonanz. Under The Resonanz May Music Festival, we are

going to be entertained with six concerts this month from opera, classical music to choral works. The Resonanz is one of Jakarta’s renowned music schools that was founded by Avip Priatna – who is also the conductor and founder of the Jakarta Concert Orchestra and the awardwinning Batavia Madrigal Singers. For the very first time, they are conducting this festival with “A Night At The Opera” on May 3rd, featuring arias from Don Giovanni, Madame Butterfly, La Boheme and others. A line up of big sounds such as Aning Katamsi (soprano), Henny Janawati (mezzo soprano), Christine Tambunan (soprano), Rainier Revireino (bass), Fitri Muljati
(soprano), Pharel Silaban (tenor). Anny Johan (soprano), and Fiona Luisa (soprano) are ready to bring you to the land of drama, tragedy, love and of course beautiful singing. These famous performers by the way are also the teachers at the school. The concerts continue on May 10, with a theme called “Divertimento 3” featuring renowned classical music pieces for both vocals and instruments from works of Mozart, Schubert, Schumann and Faure. Frequently found on stage in 6” heels wielding a Stratocaster, the native Texan and ex Polyphonic Spree associate has a penchant for turning expectations on their head and shaking up people’s perceptions of what ‘arty’ music can be. Having proved herself largely free of any snobby pretentiousness over the course of three previous solo albums, the self-titled LP continues in that tradition – setting to the task in hand with a gleeful abandon and playful tone that is hard not to be won over by. From the get go, the floodgates are opened to a tidal wave of funky chamber rock, indie, pop, manic cabaret jazz and downtempo digital soul. The opening squall of “Rattlesnake” buzzes around like a schizophrenic bumblebee, with a hook that is straight out of an 80’s Sega videogame. From there, we’re straight into the giddy guitars of “Birth in Reverse”; “It’s just an ordinary day/take out the garbage, masturbate” croons Clark mischievously before launching into one of her trademark frantic solos. As with 2012’s David Byrne collaboration Love This Giant, there is a liberal smattering of brass parping away over the top of tracks like the richly textured “Digital Witness” perhaps one of the best ruminations on the all-consuming power of online social media; “If I can’t show it, you can’t see me… Won’t somebody sell me back to me?” she ponders. Despite the seemingly haphazard mix of influences, the songs remain taut and purposeful, with very little in the way of wasteful filler – only two out of 11 tracks topping the four-minute mark. Even the slower numbers like “Prince Johnny” and “I Prefer Your Love” are thrillingly beautiful ballads, driven along by lush soundscapes and dreamy lyrics that owe much to the influence of Kate Bush. Arguably still in the realm of ‘underground’, sitting on her pink plastic throne Clarke looks as assured as any artist out there and for good reason; St. Vincent is the finest music of her career, and is quite simply spectacular from start to finish. One of them, if you’ve looked at the trailer, is Spider-Man’s most electrifying foes so far played by Jamie Foxx. Scripted by a team of renowned writers, it looks like this film’s charm might last until its scheduled sequel in 2016.

The king of monsters is making its return in this modern reboot with a distinctly apocalyptic feel as it rampages across the world. Larger and more resilient to a series of nuclear missile strikes, Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla looks so titanic when compared to human creatures that stand defenseless before it. At the heart of this epic battle adventure, the film centers on one courageous soldier which adds a good dose of human elements into it, similar to what director Edwards did earlier in his 2010 movie Monsters. Expect epic destruction and a great deal of military fetishism in this reboot.

The eagerly-anticipated Runway Hits show this year was yet another success, and it added a milestone to its illustrious history by bringing in designers from around the Southeast Asia region for the very first time. In addition to being a vehicle for new names in the Indonesian design scene to debut their latest designs, Runway Hits also hopes to be a regional platform to showcase the work of international designers. Let’s see what this year’s alumni had to offer!
Peggy Hartanto The darling of Indonesian fashion has hit it out of the ballpark again with special collection done in collaboration with Bateeq. This time around, she implements contemporary batik into her trademark silhouettes. She did not deviate much from designs that eventually became her calling card: as we saw with her designs at JFW 2014, she managed to balance the fine line between finery and minimalism by paying attention to the detail in every dress, jumpsuit, and separate of the collection — each hem is exactly where it needs to be, and no soft pleat happens just by accident.

Joe Chia is a Malaysian designer who showed off a collection titled Chapter 04 – In The Name of Liberty. The monochromatic collection saw heavy military-inspired looks that came in a wide range of textures: leather, nylon, and textured neoprene made the cut. I loved the details in this collection, which also means that his work is much easier to appreciate in person, or at least in the press pit where I was sitting during the show.

Rayson Tan The second regional designer was Singapore’s Rayson Tan, who brought in the latest looks from his brand, L’ile Aux Ashby. The collection dabbled very heavily in prints and color blocking; titled Til Genesis Comes, its use of fractal imagery and bright colors betrayed the minimalism that was the overall silhouette of his dresses and separates.
Patrick Owen And who better to top off the show than Patrick Owen? He retains his expertise with digital prints and boxy, futuristic structure to deliver a message that questioned the existence of an omniscient greater being, featuring visual work begat from a collaboration with Anton Ismael and Tatiana Romanova.

If you’re looking for a highly pigmented semi-matte drugstore lipstick with (disturbingly) powerful staying power, then I highly recommend the Wet n Wild Fergie Center Stage Lip Color. The Center Stage collection is the result of a collaboration with Fergie. Yup, as in Fergalicious Fergie Ferg of the Black Eyed Peas. The formula is matte but not as drying as other matte lipsticks, and I’m not kidding when I say it lasts all day too — you’ll have to vigorously wipe at it with plenty of makeup remover before getting it all off.

The packaging looked a little, well, cheap. But what do expect from a drugstore lipstick that retails in American drugstores at USD 3.59? (We bought ours at a little over 119k at Watson’s). The Fuchsianistia is a metallic bright fuchsia, which reminds me of my beloved Make Up For Ever Rouge Artist Intense #36. Meanwhile, the Ferguson Crest Cabernet is a cool dark purple. The color payoff is more accurate in the photo to the right, because it was really tricky to capture the accurate shade on camera once we actually put them on our lips: See? The final look you see in the photos are nowhere near what the shades actually look like: the Fuchianista (on Shella, left) is markedly less cherry red in real life. The Ferguson Crest Cabernet on me is supposed to be a deep purple, not a deep red.
I highly recommend that you head out to your favorite drugstore to pick this up if you’re in a non-committed relationship with matte lipstick. But if you’re willing to spend 100k more for a matte lip shade, then head over to MAC for their wider array of shades in much more appealing packaging.

It’s the sort of place that may very well become a new stomping ground for wine lovers in the capital. The laidback yet elegant place is perfect for a post-work tipple with co-workers or mates. The real highlight, though, is the extensive selection of wine available. From France to Australia, Chile to South Africa and everything in between, Bacco wants to break away from the usual grid and created a new wine culture. A huge rack full of wine welcomes you as you step in (at reasonable prices too). And if the assortment of

wine isn’t impressive enough, Bacco has also acquired Enomatic machines, which dispense wine directly from the bottle using revolutionary inert gas preservation. The flavors and characteristics of the wine remain intact for more than three weeks, as if the bottle had just been opened. With portion control technology, the machine can dispense wines by the glass in three sizes – a 25ml tasting portion, a 75ml half glass protion, and a full 160ml glass. This will be very enticing to customers and allow optimum servings while eliminating waste. Plus, face it, it’s kinda fun to have your wine this way.
FOOD But Bacco doesn’t stop there. The wonderful cuisine here is definitely something to experience as well. And if you want to pair your meal with the right wine, the knowledgeable staff will be happy to assist you. We started with the Salmon Nicoise Salad (75k); a tasty blend of seared salmon, mesclun, caper berries, red radish, baby potatoes, French bean, with soft boiled egg tempura and honey mustard vinaigrette. We also love the Mushroom Cappelletti (75k); porcini and champignon mushroom stuffed pasta, served with truffle and cheese cream sauce. If you feel like sharing, try the Polpette e Salsicee Pizza (80k); beef meatballs and sausage, jalapeño, onion slices, arugula, tomato confit, and tomato sauce. Or should you want your pizza has a bit more oomph, go for the Foie Gras Pizza (110k)! For the main dish, we particularly loved the Californian Seabass (180k); crispy pan seared Californian Seabass
fillet served with garlic butter, sautéed baby carrots, green bean, and white wine sabayon. Pasta lovers will also be happy with the plentiful selections here, and there are a good number of dishes from the grill for all you carnivores as well. As for dessert, you can’t go wrong with the Casa Noble Tequila Pie (65k); caramel and hazelnut chocolate pie, doused with tequila! The Happy Hours, Monday to Friday, 4 to 7pm, has a ‘Buy 1 Get 1 Free’ deal on house pours and draft beer. he people of Goods Dept. have done it again! After a café and a diner, they came up with a simple, no frills burger joint just opened a little more than two months ago. Goods Burger is located at the popular Pondok Indah Mall 2, inside the Goods Dept. store. It’s still the soft opening phase of the eatery, but we’ve been hearing some good buzz about the place. The décor is kept decidedly simple, but these people are dead serious about the food. Goods Café and Diner are well known for their yummy Coffee Rubbed Burger (45k). And you can also find it at Goods Burger. With its secret coffee spice rub and special homemade BBQ sauce, the burger has become a big hit with Jakarta’s foodies. They take it one step further with the Hawaiian Burger (55k); juicy burger patty with mozzarella cheese, grilled pineapple, smoked beef bacon, dill pickle, and adobo spread. Other notable burgers here are the Juicy Lucy (45k); with yellow cheddar-stuffed patty and spicy BBQ sauce, and the Black Olive Tapenade (45k); with Jack cheese and homemade olive tapenade.

FOOD There are vegetarian options, too, if you feel like it.Try the No Meat Burger (50k); with black bean quinoa patty, avocado, yellow cheddar, and yogurt adobo, or the Grilled Portabella Burger (30k); with local portabella mushroom, and Emmental cheese. Other dishes here are the Classic Hot Dog (30k), and the delicious Banh Mi (45k). Banh Mi is a Vietnamese sandwich, but this one is a special twist of the old dish, replacing the shredded chicken with chicken sausage, plus sriracha mayo, cucumber, pickled radish and carrot, topped with cilantro. Another Hawaiian-inspired dish is also found in the Classic Loco Moco (55k); with rice, burger patty smothered with brown mushroom gravy, topped with a sunny side up egg. But the restaurant came up with a local touch to this dish with J.L.M. or Jakarta Loco Moco (55k), using nasi goreng kampung instead of plain white rice. A definite must try!
Dessert lovers won’t get left out; there’s the wonderful Ice Cream Sandwich (38k); Baskin Robbins ice cream flavor on two cookies, plus sprinkles, peanuts, peanut butter, or chocolate chips (add 5k for each). Try also the Confetti Cake (45k/slice); vanilla pound cake, lemon curd, cream cheese. Goods Burger also whips up some mean milkshakes; like the classic Fresh Strawberry Milkshake (35k), the Euro-inspired Espresso Nutella Milkshake (35k), the comforting Chocolate, Peanut Butter, and Banana Milkshake (35k), or take it up a notch with the Bailey’s or the Kahlua Milkshakes (40k each; add 35k with alcohol)! You can down some refreshing Classic Lemonade (25k), Lychee or Strawberry Lemonade (35k), too. tterhound is another eatery from the good people of Jittlada Group. As we all know, the company has years of experience bringing the best of Thai cuisine to the masses here with Jittlada, White Elephant, and Chandara restaurants. And now comes Otterhound, the outlet specializing in Thai fusion fare, and taking the tasty favorite dishes up a notch. Located at Lotte Shopping Avenue on Casablanca area, Otterhound opened in November last year. We visited Otterhound on a recent Friday afternoon. We wanted a little respite from the crazy traffic, and this place certainly provided a nice escape. The restaurant’s interior has classic black and white tiles, juxtaposing nicely with a mish mash of furniture, and accented with a quirky map on one of the walls. The map describes Otterhound’s owner’s travels which undoubtedly contribute to the concept of the restaurant of combining flavors and tastes of the East and West.

We started with the Salmon Carpaccio in Hot Spicy Sauce (75k); sliced salmon with a special Thai-inspired dressing. The tangy dressing has a delicious kick that complemented the fresh salmon very nicely. We also tried the Fillet Steak Salad (55k); diced striploin steak on a bed of crisp lettuce with a special house dressing. Again, the delicious dressing just added a complex dimension to a seemingly simple dish. The Spaghetti with Dried Salty Fish (55k) also made it to our table. This is a twist on the old pasta favorite, with an unmistakably Asian flavor, courtesy of the salted fish and the chilies. It is one of the favorite dishes here.

Other features slated to appear with the new camera include a smaller 12.2-megapixel sensor that allows a peak ISO of 409,600, along with the ability to use the XAVC S codec and not just AVCHD as before.
