Our hearts go out to our brothers and sisters in the city who have to evacuate their houses, and even close down their businesses due to the heavy rain causing floods all over town. The impact of the floods has caused the whole city to suffer, especially visible as traffic becomes worse with the limited route options, in effect disrupting the normal life as we know it. We hate to be the bearer of bad news, but according to the weather agency (BMG) the downpour will only continue throughout this month. As there is not much we can do about the weather, we can as a community, help each other in many different ways, mainly in providing traffic and other flood-related information through various media outlets. In times like this being in the know is key, so The Beat has made it a habit to check traffic conditions in Google Maps prior to every journey around town, and to scan for possible alternative routes. Aside from Google Maps there is Lewatmana. com where it provides live feeds of CCTVs setup all around town. While driving, radio Elshinta (90.0 fm) and Sonora (92.0 fm) are two radio stations that you can listen to find out on various traffic and flood information. We also recommend our readers to follow the Jakarta police’s twitter @TMCPoldaMetro, and even send them your tweets regarding the situation on the road. Another great smart phone app is Waze, which crowdsources the speed of other drivers and picks on congested areas. And although the weather is gloomy, it doesn’t mean you have to be. Pick up the Beat or check out our website for all of your entertainment needs. Despite everything that’s going on, don’t feel bad if you have the need to get entertained, be happy aja. HERE WE GO AGAIN I
t’s that time of year again: Everyone’s wallet is feeling thin after year-end bingeing, the seasonal decorations have been taken down, leaving buildings looking drab and colourless ... and flooding has come to Jakarta. Inundation of the capital often occurs in January and February, and every year there is a scramble (usually too late) to clear trash from drains and sewers as water levels rise. Heavy rain is forecast to continue for at least another month but by mid-January some 64,000 more had been evacuated right across the capital, with 11

fatalities. Electricity blackouts have been widespread where flooding has occurred at electricity substations. Last year, the flooding was particularly bad, with even Hotel Indonesia roundabout knee-deep in muddy water at one point. This year, the worst of the flooding has affected other parts of the city, with North and West Jakarta bearing the brunt. Deputy Governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama has said floods in the capital have declined compared with last year, with fewer areas

submerged and floodwater subsiding faster. “In the past, Sudirman and Thamrin would be inundated after a short period of rain. Now there is no standing water despite nights of heavy rain,” he said. However, like the capital’s traffic congestion, its flooding problems are complex and multi-layered, and cannot realistically be solved within the space of twelve months. The governor Jokowi has already said that his administration is taking a long-term approach to dealing with the city’s flooding problems by dredging waterways, installing flooddefence measures and relocating families away from the floodplains of the 13 waterways that flow through the city. Some of the issues confronting the current administration are starting to become apparent. Clearly, in less than 18 months no one could reasonably expect to have eradicated the city’s vulnerability to flooding when it is gradually sinking into the sea, when rampant construction that destroys water catchments continues with little control, and flood disaster preparedness could be better. In addition, much of what must be done lies outside the direct control of the city administration, the responsibility for coordination and implementation lying instead with the central government. For example, the rebuilding of the West Flood Canal at Jl. Latuharhari, Menteng, where it was breached last year leading to the flooding of Hotel Indonesia roundabout, is the responsibility of the Ministry of Public Works and should have been completed by mid-January. It is nowhere near finished.
Equally, the control of building development in water catchment areas falls to local governments that lie beyond the DKI (Jakarta province) jurisdiction. Also, there must be a change of mindset by individual citizens with regard to littering and waste disposal, which have a cumulative impact on drainage. “The role of the people must be developed or it will all be in vain,” Jokowi has said. All of this is playing out against a background of impending elections to the nation’s parliament (DPR) and the presidency, due in April and July respectively. Jokowi is currently seen as the front-runner (yet undeclared) potential presidential candidate by a wide margin, and even his deputy Basuki has been mentioned as a possible candidate. Will Jakarta’s current flooding woes seriously dent their image as no-nonsense, can-do men of the people? With the possibility of flooding due to continue for at least another month, the next few weeks and months will be crucial in determining how the governor’s popularity in particular is perceived by the electorate. For his part, Jokowi has been asking the people to be patient about how the city deals with flooding. “Don’t just ask this to be done in a month or a year; this takes time,” he has said. (Jim Read)

Late Night Munchies
It’s 3am on a weekend and you’re on your way home. After an all night effort of partying it up you suddenly crave a quick food fix to quiet that growling stomach. The easy option is to just stop by a SevenEleven, but you want something less of corporate America and rather a more traditional locale. Here are three spots in the South Jakarta area that have become late-night grub institutions for people in the know. Despite looking humble, these places attract the Hummers and Harrier gang nonetheless.
Roti Bakar Eddy The bread is dry, and almost anyone can make a sandwich 10 times better at home. Yet, people flock to Roti Bakar Eddy (Eddy’s Grilled Sandwich) every weekend (and weeknight). Located in front of Al Azhar mosque, in between Jalan Sisingamangaraja and Jalan Pattimura, Roti Bakar Eddy actually offers more than just grilled sandwiches; fried rice and satay just to name a few items on the menu. After trying a few different food options, and several sandwiches, we came to the conclusion that

the biggest factor of Roti Bakar Eddy’s success is location, location, location as it is on the main road heading in and out of Jakarta’s south side. Despite what we think of the food, still, impromptu tents for its customers stretch to about a third of a football field and it was a full house. Roti Bakar Eddy have been in business since the early ‘90s and have opened up a few branches around Jakarta. Expect to spend just 30k here.

Bubur Ayam Radio Dalam
At 3am as one drives down Jalan Radio Dalam to the direction of Pondok Indah, you will only see dark, closed buildings, albeit one shop on the left with glittering lights. It’s quite the mismatch: the sign says Bubur Ayam (chicken porridge) but the shop is all carpets. The story goes that in the early ‘90s a traditional porridge vendor used to do business in front of the carpet shop in the late hours. So successful, the carpet shop owner bought his business and moved the porridge
business inside his shop. Now the store is divided into two sections, one part carpet shop, the other a 24-hour restaurant selling Pakistani cuisine, chicken porridge, and now sushi. Sitting on the floor on top of the carpets, laying against the wall and eating warm porridge does have a magical soothing effect. Amongst the three spots we featured, this place is the most costly and clean. So if you’re with company that you’re not sure can handle Jakarta street food, this is the place to visit.
Gulai Tikungan (Gultik) Gulai is a watered down curry meal, and “tikungan” means corner. Within the vicinity behind Blok M Plaza about fifteen individual Gultik vendors are ready to dish out a plate of rice, splashed with a warm meaty soup and crackers (kerupuk). We tried a few different gultik options along the street and came to the conclusion they all taste quite similar to one another. One vendor, Suparman, has
been coming to the same spot for over thirty years, and says that it used to be only four of them. When The Beat came to visit, is was raining but still didn’t stop customers from enjoying their meal- some retreated under the roof of surrounding buildings. Gultik is ridiculously cheap and we only recommend it for those who are accustomed to devouring traditional Jakarta street food. www.beatmag.com

TBJ: Tell us a bit about yourself. Marco: I lived abroad for several years and finished my college at De La Salle University – Philippines with a Bachelor of Arts in political science and a minor in international law. I have lived in Jakarta, Manila, Singapore, Malaysia and traveled a lot including Hongkong, Netherlands, Spain several unholy trips to Ibiza, the Clubbing Mecca.
TBJ: Do you think the entertainment biz is easy in this town? Marco: Tricky I would say - it looks easy from the outside but actually a lot of work goes on in the inside. People always think we - X2 staff look so glam - but actually we also do a lot of un-glam work behind the curtains, managing the club day and night seven days a week, 365 days a year! Then there’s always the challenge: keeping up with being the most happening place.

FEATURE So naturally by the end of the first decade of 2000s, in 2010 and afterward, the trend shifts toward Jakarta - which by now has the biggest clubbing scene - biggest number of clubs and events in Southeast Asia. TBJ: And the lowlights? Marco: You need to be extremely creative in doing your marketing because the competition is so high! Everyone races to be the best. Everyone wants to beat X2. TBJ: How long has Posture Management been around and how did it start? Marco: I founded it in 2003, out of passion for fashion - sounds cliche? Well it is, indeed. I thought that Indonesian models had a lot of potential but not a lot of agencies (at that time, almost none) to work, to explore and dig out the best in their talents. So I just kind of jumped on the wagon and started booking models for some friends of mine which happened to be working as or for a fashion designer or run a production house. It began in earnest by supplying models for the local television commercial scene and big events. Posture Management has developed a bigger pool of talents/models in a short span of time. TBJ: What does Posture offer its clients? Marco: Other than our main business core which is managing talents and models, we also organize events – from product launching to wedding events, parties and private functions. I also enjoy talent-scouting - because I believe that there are a lot of natural beauties out there, they just need to be found - even from the remotest parts of Indonesia!

usy hosting his own regular radio shows, Dagienkz adds ink to the monthly calendar, preparing his first ever human puppet show, Wayang Orang Rock, in which he’ll have his band buddies involved: Seringai, Netral, Roxx, and so on. According to the man himself, the modern wayang orang event, which melds gamelan sounds with holograms, is scheduled to be shown next month at Tennis Indoor Senayan.
What music are you into at the moment? You may or may not be aware, but I’m actually a metal head—I’m metal to the core! So it goes without saying that metal music is my daily soundtrack. Lamb of God, Sepultura, you name it. But, you know what? I kind of enjoy listening to Mariah Carey as well. I think her songs suit a traffic jam situation— I’ll be in the car, in the middle of a Big Durian gridlock, the rain will begin to bucket down and I’ll think to myself “This has got to be the perfect time to turn on Mariah Carey’s Emotions!” Other than that, these last few days I’ve been hooked on tunes by this local folk group called Payung Teduh. They are awesome!
What was the worst record you ever purchased? I’d have to say a Flim and The BB’s album. What’s it called? The one with the song “New Snow”? There’s only one song with lyrics in that album, “New Snow,” the rest is all jazzy tune type tracks which I don’t understand. I don’t dig jazz, man, sorry.
What is your all-time favourite album? Why? Bad is my all-time favourite album. There’s a reason why I said 1987 was a religious year for me!

Perhaps it is a good idea to bring your loved one to see this duo right on the Valentine’s eve followed by a romantic dinner for two. Its a classical approach, yet it will never be out of fashion. However if you are not celebrating Valentine’s Day, this concert will still appeal to you through the beauty of Nora Fischer’s vocals and Daniel Kool’s piano performance. The versatile voice, exceptional musicality and expressive stage presence of soprano Nora Fischer is noted and praised widely. Nora was originally trained classically, but developed her voice in a variety of musical styles. With her love for her very own interpretation

of classical music, and an understanding of the theatrical possibilities of concerts, she has built an adventurous solo career. Nora performs music from the sixteenth century to the countless compositions that were written specifically for her. Nora began her classical education at the Conservatory of Amsterdam, but her love for many different musical styles brought her to Copenhagen to study at the Complete Vocal Institute. Here she learned to deploy every aspect of the human voice. In 2009 Nora also completed her studies in Philosophy and Musicology at the University of Amsterdam. Hyderabad Western Music Forum in India praised her vocals for having exceptional depth while being light textured yet full bodied, refreshingly transparent and

understated. They were also impressed on how her vocals reflected different moods and intimations. Nora performs music from the 16th century up to the countless recent compositions that have been written especially for her.
Marjes Benoist. He finished his Bachelor and Masters degree at the Conservatory of Amsterdam with Mila Baslawskaja. In 2001 he won the third prize in the finals of the YPF competition as the youngest contestant, and in 2003 the second prize in the finals of the Prinses Christina Concours. Besides this he received many other awards. Daniël is a respected and frequently performing soloist and chamber musician. Daniël forms a piano-cello duo with cellist Ketevan Roinishvili with whom were selected for the finals of the Dutch Classical Talent competition.
As a soloist, Nora made her debut in the Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ with musicians of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. She has world-wide concert experience, taking her from all over Europe to India, Indonesia and the United States. She has been involved in many projects as a soloist, working among others with the Asko|Schönberg, Nederlands Blazers Ensemble, the Deutsches Symphonie- He has formed a duo with soprano Nora Orchester Berlin, Calefax Reed Quintet Fischer and have toured the Netherlands and are coming to Indonesia. Here, in no particular order is what got us rockin’ in the free world in 2013. Dan Ashcroft. London Grammar If You Wait H e a r t stopping vocals and a beautifully layered, rich soundscape of soft pianos, gentle synths and subdued percussion all add up to a well deserved Mercury nomination for the Empire of the Sun - Ice on London trio. the Dune Described by the Sydney The Civil Wars - The duo as a “post apocalyptic adventure” (isn’t everything Civil Wars I n f i n i t e l y these days?) Ice on the Dune l o v e l y is brimming with doesb l u e g r a s s what-it-says-on-the-tin f r o m song titles like ‘Surround Californian Joy Williams Sound”, “Awakening” and and Tennessee dandy John “Celebrate” that will soften Paul White. Americana at even the hardest disco-pop haters. it’s very best. Foals Holy Fire Starting off as a groovy, marimba infused slice of discoish pop, central track Inhaler is the standout from this solid effort from the band of the moment. At 1 minute and 49 seconds the whole thing goes mental, exploding into a chorus that sounds more Tom Morello or Dave Navarro than five pasty lads from the home counties with short guitar straps.

Queens of the Stone Age - Like Clockwork Muscular riffs and s u b t l y sinister vocals abound on Josh Homme’s dark masterpiece - best demonstrated on first single “My God is the Sun” and “Smooth Sailing”. The measured, fuzzy bassline of curtain raiser “Keep Your Eyes Peeled” and the whacked-out groove of “I Sat By The Ocean” is as good as anything on 2002 watershed Songs For The Deaf.
David Bowie The Next Day Contrary a n d complex work with overtones of death and notions of Bowie’s own mortality, but regardless, the overall impression of Bowie’s 24th LP is one of an invigorated and revitalized pop master doing what he does best. Tame Impala Lonerism One of the few bands in recent years to have ‘nailed’ psychedelica – giving a tip of the cap to The Floyd, Sgt. Pepper et al, and making it all sound fresh and vital again. As far as 60’s revivals go, “Lonerism” is damn near perfect. Pearl Jam - Lightning Bolt The kind of measured study in integrity and poise that only two decades of experience can bring, Lightning Bolt won’t win any awards for innovation, but in paying homage to PJ’s core style it proves a remarkably relevant effort.

Despite his brilliant mind and intelligence, our hero is just like an every day man. Note for all you Tom Clancy fans out there, this is not based on any of the books. Are you disappointed? The Kid (De Niro), is unemployed and in dire need of money, quickly agrees to the idea, but for Razor, only after being much coaxed out of his retirement, eventually puts on his gloves once again and heads for the ring to have the final head-to-head with The Kid. Be ready for some good humor that plays on the top boxing movies of yesteryear.

They are then trapped behind the Nazi army lines. Directed by Academy Award winning George Clooney, who also plays the lead role here together with Matt Damon, this movie recounts the heroism of the Monuments Men in rescuing the masterpieces at the close of WWII.

1. Going with the flow Something that Indra wants more women to be aware of is that not all en vogue hairstyles are going to be tidy, slickedback affairs. Plenty of looks on the runway involve artfully messy looks. “Too many women are scared of the looking grungy and edgy — many still prefer the sweet kawaii look,” he laughs. He admits that it does get boring to see many women wear their long hair in loose waves. Don’t be afraid to eschew the norm by trying out a different haircut. “There’s more to life than layering,” he says with a grin. Try something new, like short bobs and pixie cuts. “A lot of Indonesian women are attached to long hair, but women in Hong Kong and Malaysia are already much more adventurous.”

Not styling it enough Indra says not enough women are using styling products and styling their hair at home. “You can’t go to the salon and ask for a Marilyn Monroe haircut without styling it every day,” Indra says. “In the end, it’s about the way you style your hair, not the way you cut it.” The way you style your hair is a complement to the rest of your look; what’s the point of meticulously picking out your outfit and applying makeup if your hair doesn’t add anything to your overall look? A lot of people will say that they don’t have enough time to style their hair, but there are already so many time-saving styling products on the market that will get the job done in no time. It’s important to know what type of hair you have and what look you want to achieve before you go out to buy the right products.
3. Not having enough fun with color While he does not expect too much from the hair dyeing department, Indra also wants more women try to take baby steps to dye their hair. “Black is beautiful,” he says, “but fashion is always now.” He’s clearly a proponent of having fun with your hair and treating it as an accessory to your present sartorial preferences! For first timers, he suggests acclimating to the hair-coloring bandwagon by trying something mild at first, and then go bolder from there. Start with a color that is one shade lighter than your real hair color, and keep kicking it up to lighter shades. But remember that treated hair needs extra care. “Not enough women give their chemically treated hair the right type of care,” he warns. STYLE 4. Not getting proper styling consultations Indra openly admits that people simply do not spend enough time getting a solid consultation with their stylist. It’s important for you, as a client, to know what you want and discuss it with your hairdresser. If you’re the type of person who gives their hairdresser free rein with your mane, you may often end up not having your expectations met. Worse still, the hairdresser may end up defaulting by giving you a cut and color combination s/he is already familiar and comfortable with; while that look might look good on other people, it may not necessarily be the ideal look for you. A good style consultation is the difference between wearing your hair loud and proud, and tying it back in a regretful bun for the next three months. Don’t be afraid to speak up if you’re not jiving with your stylist’s ideas, it’s your head after all. Remember to take into consideration the following: - The texture and thickness of your hair. For example, it is easier for people with medium/thick hair to maintain

a long-lasting perm when compared to people with finer hair. - Your lifestyle. If you are someone who is always on the move, a high-maintenance look that requires some time to style may not be the most ideal option for you. Will you have time for post-treatment hair care too? Are you up to the task of giving bleached hair a nourishing mask twice a month? - Your budget. For instance, don’t be fooled by the seemingly low-maintenance look of a pixie cut: it requires regular trimming to keep its shape. Even when you do try to grow it out, you still need to visit a stylist once in a while if you want it grow out in a neat and orderly way. So don’t forget to keep all that advice in mind the next time you head out to your salon. Try something new with your hair while we are still in the early throes of 2014: whether you end up dying your hair going for an undercut, go all in. It’s a new year, after all — time for new things!

he good people of Opco Group bring you HeyHo, a Pan-Asian street food dining and bar. Opened last November, it’s relatively new. But it’s already making quite a buzz among foodies. The place looks like a glammed-up version of a mom-and-pop eatery in a Chinatown somewhere. The bar provides a nice welcome as you step inside; a signal of what’s to come.There are some striking images adorning the walls of the restaurant, but the most interesting one is no doubt a painting of customers taking photos of their food. How ‘current’! The mish-mash of furniture also gives a relaxed vibe to the restaurant. Start with some light bites like the lip-smacking Uncle Ho’s Wings (32k); deep fried chicken wings, glazed with garlic and herbs. The scrumptious Salt and Pepper Squid (40k) is also a great choice. If you prefer salad, try the Bangbang Beef Noodle Salad (45k), with shredded beef, green mango, tomato and lemongrass dressing. Pork lovers will rejoice with dishes like Mr. Phat (50k); pulled pork with Asian slaw, fried egg, and bread, or the Vietnamese sandwich Banh Mi. You can have it with pork (48k), or chicken (45k). Either way, your taste buds will be dancing with all the flavors nicely blending inside the baguette. We highly recommend the Malay Butter Prawns (105k), a tasty explosion of herbs and spices like curry leaves, egg floss, toasted coconuts, lime, etc. over succulent prawns. The Yellow Fish Curry (92k) is also popular here.
Another noteworthy dish is the Com Tam (60k) or Vietnamese-style pork chop over rice. Wash them down with the Hello Mellow (35k), a watermelon and passion fruit-based mocktail, or the Yellow Fever (40k), a mango and orange smoothie blend. But HeyHo is making a name with some of the most inexpensive drink offers in town! Shots of whiskey or tequila start at 35k, and you should not miss Hey Ho’s quirky-named signature cocktails like Me Love You Long Time (110k), Say Sex (85k), or Bitch Slap (85k). But the crowd pleaser here is unquestionably the Leslie Chow’s Orgy Party (300k)! It’s an Asian-style sangria; a potent mix of wine (you can order with red or white wine), Absolut Blue, triple sec, lemongrass syrup, and infused with cinnamon, cloves, kefir lime leaves, lemon juice, plus longan fruit, pineapple fruit, jambu fruit, and topped with sparkling water.What’s unique about it that it is served in a tool box, and big enough for a party of six! t’s hard not to notice that the world has a case of Korean fever; from K-Pop music and dance to the TV dramas, people (including here in Indonesia) just can’t get enough of all things Korean. And thankfully, the food scene in Jakarta is now richer with Korean gastronomic delights. Welcome to Bornga, a restaurant that’s serving food that is truly Korean cuisine at its best. After opening their first outlet on Jl. Wolter Monginsidi in 2011 and then in Kelapa Gading, business is booming for Bornga. And recently, we got to visit their newest outlet on Jl. Bulungan, which opened a couple of days before the New Year.
FOOD The interior is warm and casual with modern Asian aesthetic, mixing dark wood furniture with striking elements of stones. The spacious first floor is the main dining area, but should you like a more intimate setting, the second floor has plenty of private rooms for your group, big or small. The star at Bornga is their grilled meat. You can choose from a good selection of US and Australian prime quality meats. We highly recommend the Woo Samgyup (170k); a 150 gram serving of thinly sliced beef brisket, marinated with Bornga’s special sauce. We also loved the Kkot Sal (290k); 160 grams of juicy prime cut, boneless beef. There are other beef (and also pork, if you prefer) cuts available for all your carnivore cravings. The food is no doubt better enjoyed with a bunch of friends or family members. It has a certain communal feel.The meat dishes come with a smorgasbord of complimentary tea (with a unique taste), fresh locally-sourced
vegetables, and also side dishes, providing a healthy balance for all the savory meats. The courteous and skillful staff taught us the best way to appreciate the dish; which is to take a leaf, place a garlic slice or two, add some kimchi or fermented vegetable, a dollop of Ssamjang chili paste and other seasonings, your choice of side dish, then wrap it all up and simply enjoy. The sensation is simply wonderful! Other signatures on the menu include the traditional Dolsot Bibimbap (78k), mixed rice and vegetables on a hot stone bowl. This is de rigueur for an authentic Korean gastronomic experience. Another notable dish is the Chadol Duenjang JJigae (68k), a hearty soybean paste and beef stew perfect for a rainy day. And seafood lovers will love the Haemul Dduk Jjim (180k) or seafood mix smothered with a tasty, spicy sauce. A complimentary fruity herbal drink called Omicha provide a perfect ending for your meal. But why stop there? Try the alcoholic brews like Soju (160k), Baram (85k), or Makguli (195k) to complete your tasty tour of Korea at Bornga.
