A few days prior to Tiesto’s Jakarta performance last month, I was thinking about the drive up to Ancol, North Jakarta from my South Jakarta office in the midst of the notorious Friday night traffic, then having to partake in the macet within Ancol to find a decent parking spot. It came to a point where I thought that it wasn’t worth it; the traffic was going to get in the way of me catching the Tiesto show. Luckily, the night before the rave I was informed by one of the Tiesto show sponsors that I could ride in their shuttle bus from SCBD in South Jakarta to the venue. That night I took the TransJakarta (aka “busway”) from in front of my office then caught the provided shuttle bus; happy days! The idea of creating an integrated mass transportation system in Jakarta involving MRTs, monorails, buses and electric trains seems like a no brainer. But the awful truth is that private cars rule, and public transport, well, for lack of a better word, is pathetic. I too am guilty in being part of the problem, driving around my small car and not taking public transport, but hey, public transport sucks, right? No one in public office has taken the issue seriously, thanks to the automotive industry lobbyists guiding (or dictating?) the government to be pro private transport. Enter Jokowi. He is going to go up against the macet and actually do something about it. After being put to sleep for over five years the Jakarta Monorail is now back on track. At the same time the Jakarta MRT project is also revived after years of planning and no action. Jokowi has also ordered 1,000 new TransJakarta buses set to hit the streets this month. The governor also has several policies in the pipeline that will basically curb private car use and support public transport. The bad news is that it will take about five years for his plans to come full circle, so this actually means more macet to come. Have patience Jakartans, as concerts soon enough in other parts of town will be well worth the trip. Meanwhile, we have a few events on this month. Watch out for the The Beat Hottest Girl of the Year contest in the middle of November at Red Square. The Beat BBQ is back at Liquid Exchange on Nov 24, and The Beat presents U2 Beats at Molly Mallone’s on Nov 30. See you there folks.

SCOOP Indonesia through “The Looking Glass” Since the mid-19th century, many photographers were assigned to document the natural and cultural resources of Indonesia (which was at the time still known as the Netherlands Indies). The results of the works of the photographers were used for the purposes of knowledge and sciences and also for entertainment and tourism. Since then, photography, which started with the use of glass plates until the digital era of today, almost two centuries thereafter, has become a daily necessity. Erasmus Huis is holding an exhibition from October 28 - November 8, which attempts to show the documentation and recording of memories of life in Indonesia in glass media through a timeline of documentary photography, while also presenting the history of photography from the principality of camera obscura, innovations on the technology of cameras (through the collection of cameras of the Museum Benteng Heritage, Tangerang) to the use of the camera obscura as a community based interest. Retrace the history here and seek how you can track the collections in Indonesia.
Indonesia Book Fair 2013 Indonesia Book Fair is an annual book event, which is organized by the Indonesia Publisher Association (IKAPI), and it is a blend of a book fair, library exhibition, and a rights fair. The participants are publishers and libraries from different provinces in the country as well as overseas publishers and regional publisher associations. The Indonesia Book Fair 2013 is expected to be a place of knowledge transformation, a center of book promotion and shopping, and the center for the largest and most comprehensive literary activities in Indonesia. Along with the rapid development in technology, books that are generally in form of printed books are morphed and transformed in various forms and mediums. Nowadays, people are familiar with e-book, digital publishing, online bookstore, and digital libraries. Therefore, “Knowledge Transformation” is the theme of The Indonesia Book Fair 2013. This event will be held in Istora Senayan from November 2-10. There will also be cosplay, kids fashion, and regional dance competitions.

“Jakarta: Where to…” Every day we at The Beat receive numerous emails from our readers regarding what to do in this city. That being said, we thought it would only be proper to list some of the most frequently asked questions in regards to “where to go” in Jakarta.
To propose to your future wife:
One of the most romantic spots in Jakarta has to be Skye on the top 56th floor of Menara BCA. Skye has two sections; one side being the restaurant, the other an alfresco lounge showcasing the spectacular view of the city. What better way to pop the question on the top floor of the city’s tallest buildings, open air under the starry night with majestic city lights visible as far as the horizon (on a good day).
To have a fancy dinner:
Amuz is hailed by many as the city’s finest French restaurant, serving not only the best French cuisine but also an impressive wine list. Amuz is helmed by chef Gilles Marx who has been in Indonesia for over two decades, where a lot of Jakarta’s French cuisine talent today started off serving under him. As it is a very swank place, expect to open your wallet rather wide.

Located in North Jakarta, Alexis packs anything and everything you could desire for a boy’s night out. This place packs seven levels of entertainment from club to karaoke to a very exclusive spa. We can’t get into much detail of what happens here, but you can find out pretty fast for yourself. Alexis is frequented by locals and foreigners alike and especially neighbouring countries. The bill can be quite large if you take in all the pleasures available, but we hear it’s worth every penny.

Kemang in South Jakarta is a famous expat area with a number of entertainment locales with an emphasis for those who are on a budget. Although slowly newer venues are more sophisticated (read: expensive), Kemang is still considered the less expensive end of town to get your entertainment fix. Beers go for as cheap as Rp 30k in open air venues such as Kemang Food Festival, Splash, Bremer and Beer Garden.
To dance the night away:
For you younger people head out to Fable in Fairgrounds SCBD or Blow Fish at City Plaza at Wisma Mulia. Both places are always busy on the weekends at least. The new Exodus in Kuningan is packing in a young crowd too. If you are a little older, we recommend X2 in Alexis Plaza Senayan. This place has stood the test of Jalan RE Martadinata 1 T. “Why preach only to the converted?” exclaimed Marcel Thee back in 2005. He’d named his band Sajama Cut because it sounded weird and would leave casual fans guessing as to what kind of music they played. He stood for no ideals and just wanted his music to be listened to by everyone. Fast forward that tape; it’s 2013 and Marcel’s self-made report card for this year has been marked. His own label, The Bronze Medal, released (mostly in tape form), his solo recordings under the Strange Mountain moniker, rereleasing Sajama Cut’s second album on vinyl and also, his other project, Roman Catholic Skulls, has released their first album through Elevation Records. His solo record, as himself, With Strong Hounds Three, shall be re-released in vinyl by the end of the year.

FEATURE What music are you into at the moment? There’s a couple of local bands I’ve really been enjoying, such as Jirapah, Vague, and Polka Wars. There’s also a couple of Sandro Peri albums that have kept me company on long drives, as well as a slew of mid-90s “slo-core” bands such as Rex, Codeine, and Bedhead which I have really been getting into again. The global tape music scene has also given us so much great stuff that it’s also overwhelming. Just off the top of my head: Lee Noble, Sparkling Wide Pressure, Pierrot Lunaire. Endless.
Who do you want to be, other than yourself, next time you reincarnate? I really don’t know. Either a Pope or some local tycoon from the late 80s; living without a soul sounds fascinating.
What book are you reading now and what’s the score (1-10)? Having a two-year old doesn’t really leave much time for heavy book reading. I re-read music bios everyday, that’s really it. I alternate between that Everett True bio of Nirvana and that Motley Crue biography, which is one spectrum of evolved-to-devolved music What was the first record you bought—any for sure. Oh, that Bonnie Price Billy book is incredible too. interesting story behind it? It would have to be a gimmick bootleg tape of Japanese late 80s anime/mecha drama in What new movie should people see? Why? audio form. I’ve had many—so many of those. Gravity probably, but everyone’s seen that. So My parents would buy it for me literally every let’s go with that new Dragon Ball Z movie. I had the Jazzy Jeff and Fresh Prince tape as well as an All-4-One tape at some point. But those are boring, obvious choices, so I’m going to go with that Pungent Stench album from 1990, I think. STYLE Briefly, what’s Green Rock all about? The ‘Green’ refers to living a clean and green lifestyle, but that does not exclude the horns rising and the rock star approach to life rearing itself. What’s your favourite nightclub in Jakarta? I enjoy watching a Wallabies game of rugby at one of the sports bars in Kemang, a quiet drink at Loewe. The Beat Aloha barbeques at Liquid Exchange plus I like the roof top placed called Lucy in the Sky. A wilder Green Rock night may involve the occasional journey onto the dark side, which is North Jakarta. Overall, Jakarta has a lot to offer in terms of nightlife and entertainment without paying Melbourne taxi, food and drink prices … Where can folks find Green Rock in Jakarta? Ruler Mobs is a new female DJ outfit based in Jakarta, made up of Simone Amenda (vocals, decks, and pictured right) and Rissa Rebellious (decks). They were formed by Milinka Radisic and her management team Ruler Rekordz. They’re young, brash, rocking and playing some great sounds. The Beat’s David Trauts caught up with them to find out more.
Give me the brief history of Ruler Mobs. Simone: It all began after Idul Fitri this year... Milinka had an idea to form a DJ group that had different characteristics from other DJ collectives. She came up with the name Ruler Mobs. What makes us different is that we are both women who have many tattoos, and play the kind of music that is different. What kind of music is that? Simone: We have a few tracks that we produced ourselves with support from Milinka. We also play a mix of progressive, electro and some edm. Not many Indonesian DJs are playing that style of music yet.

So how’s your love life? You guys are pretty rock and roll with all the tatts etc. What do the guys think of that? Rissa: Our love lives are awesome. We’re both single and having fun. Is it because of the tatts? Rissa: No, no. Not because of the tattoos. People rate us as being pretty cool. They give us support and are optimistic about we have achieved and what we are doing. We are cool, man. We DJ and have a lot of tattoos. What’s the favourite tattoo you are wearing? Rissa: My favourite tattoo is the rebellious one and the angel on my left hand.
Simone: I like the nightmare pumpkin on my left hand. What achievements have you had in your short career? Any highlights? Rissa: So far so good. It has been exciting. The crowd has enjoyed the music and the euphoria that we bring to the party. So where can we see you during November? Rissa: We’re doing Finals of The Beat’s Hottest Girl of the Year contest at Reds Square on Nov 16. That should be fun.

This year’s Indonesian Urbanathlon consisted of 7km of running and 8 obstacles, which are Water Barrier (hurdle jump), Stair Climbing, Monkey Business (monkey bars), Crawling, Tyres, Balancing Bridge, Water Pool, and the Wall Climb.

ver since I tried Master Bootcamp for the first time over a year ago, I think I have come quite far in achieving better and healthier me. I exercise regularly, I eat better food, and try to get as much rest as I can. But one thing remains: I still don’t like running. So when my fellow Master Bootcamp regulars were talking about how excited they were for Indonesia Urbanathlon, I just sat in the corner feeling happy for them. Until one day, when I had dinner with my friends and did not pay attention to the WhatsApp messages on my phone until I arrived home. To my surprise, people in the group were giggling and cheering because Carlo Tamba, my beloved trainer, had just submitted my name to participate in the event. I was furious, scared, but for some weird reason, kinda excited at the same time. And I was also proud to know that my trainers and friends thought I could nail that. For those of you who have never heard of Urbanathlon, it’s an event held by Men’s Health Magazine in cities all over the world. It first started in New York back in 2006, and takes place today in scores of countries including Australia, the UK, Singapore, and (of course) Indonesia. It’s basically a race that combines running and obstacle courses, so it will not
So I got to preparing myself for the entire course. Carlo had sent us daily training plans, and I was so determined not to miss any day. While I did not succeed in following the entire program, boy, did I train hard. Honestly, it’s because I was really, really scared; I was scared that I would not be able to finish the race, or worse, collapse in the middle of it. But since I really don’t like running, I ignored most of the running programs in the training plan, and focused more on condition training. Around twelve people from Master Bootcamp had signed up for Urbanathlon, so the trainers created a training plan to prepare us for the challenges. And time really flies when you are having fun! The next thing I knew, it was only seven days until the race. And I hadn’t even trained my run properly! So I pushed myself to focus on the run during that week. It’s really amazing how pressure can boost your performance. On that week, for the first time in my life, I ran for 30 minutes nonstop. During the same week, I ran my first 7k. On race day, I woke up at 4am, wore my Master Bootcamp t-shirt (Carlo gave it to me as a good luck gift), and off I went to Master Bootcamp HQ. We gathered to do our warmups (Let me tell you, I took my warm-ups very seriously. That’s how nervous I was) and went together to the race line. The race started a bit late. The schedule said it’d start at 6, but 6.30 rolled by and we had yet to start. The participants got a bit antsy, but finally the first batch of participants took off. I was in the tenth batch so I had to wait another 30 minutes before I finally passed the start line. www.beatmag.com

FEATURE During the first ten minutes, I tried to keep up with my friends and cousin. They even held my hand for a few minutes so I would not be left behind. But then I realized that their pace was too fast for me, so I told them to leave so I could focus better. I faced the first challenge (water barrier) in Jembatan Semanggi Barat. Apparently my training paid off! It was not as hard as I thought it would be. That’s when I started to feel confident. Of course by that time all my friends were long gone. But it was okay; I kept on running, taking it slow. I tried to set smaller goals: since I brought my headphones, I decided that I had to run for as long as five songs, and I would rest (walk) for one full song. In front of Chase Plaza, we had to take the bridge to cross the street. I thought that was one of the challenges (stair climbing), but apparently I was wrong! The marshal told us to go to the parking lot where we had to climb the stairs up to the sixth floor! There, the third challenge awaited us. The infamous Monkey Bars! I knew I wouldn’t be able to do it, so I asked them if I can just pass it. The marshals there were so nice, and they encouraged me to at least try. I tried, and I failed. So one of them helped me by carrying me up on his shoulder while I moved my hands on the bar. Yes it did not count in the end, but I really appreciated the gesture. After that I ran back to the lobby, where I faced the fourth challenge: crawling. It was not hard at all, and I even got my picture taken by the official photographers! Then I ran until Semanggi for the fifth challenge, tyres. I was so relieved to see the 5km mark at the end of that! But by then I was so tired, I could hardly run. So I walked most of the time, up to Sumitmas Plaza, where one of my Master Bootcamp friends, came and picked me up. He had finished the race and went back to check if I was okay. So nice of him, eh? And it really helped as I started to run again, even though not for long, sadly... I finally reached FX, where they had prepared another two obstacles: the balancing bridge

and water pool. To be honest I was surprised to see the obstacles as they were really easy! The bridge was only four steps long (and I am only 152cm short) and the pool was tiny. Even I, the amateur, found them way too easy. Then I ran again to Plaza Selatan Senayan, where the final obstacle waited: the Wall Climb. There, my friends and cousin had waited for me, all thirteen of them. They cheered so loudly when they saw me. It really was a wonderful feeling. When I finally passed the finish line, they all came over to cheer and hug me. Nevertheless, I burst with pride and joy when I finally had my very first race medal looped around my neck. I had proved to myself that even I, someone so unfit and lousy in sports, could finish a race in one piece. And it felt really great. It took me 1:15:49 to finish the race, but I could not care less about the time. The most important thing for me was that I was able to finish my goal. That was when I finally understood when people said that during a race, you do not compete with others, but you compete with yourself. And it’s not all about the medal: it’s about commitment and confidence. When you are determined to achieve something, as long as you try your best, you will most likely succeed. I have accomplished one milestone in my fitness journey that day, and for sure I will keep collecting milestone over milestone in the future.

ounting down to the end of year, Aula Simfonia Jakarta is starting a bit early by performing their Messiah at the beginning of this month. Since the birth of the composition by George Frideric Handel in 1741, Messiah has been a part of Christmas festivity music programs for centuries. Though it is usually common to have a Messiah concert in December or nearby Christmas time, Gloriamus music school decided to put this performance as part as their upcoming Gloria Dei Cantores’ Annual Concert. Featuring some great soloists such as soprano Sylvia Wiryadi, Singaporean mezzo-soprano Anna Koor Chooi Choo, tenor Rubin Lukito and bass Ferry Chandra, this Messiah concert will be conducted by Daru Darsono and be accompanied by Jakarta Festival Chorus and Gloriamus Philharmonia. Adidharma founded this orchestra in January 2003 as Gloriamus Symphony Orchestra with the purpose of being the center for young people who want to learn about classical music and perform in international-standard concerts. During its development, Gloriamus Philharmonia has done various concerts including the Messiah Part One in 2010. Members of this orchestra mostly consist of students and teachers from Gloriamus Music School who are committed to give the best performances in each of their concerts.

I am quite excited to see the soloists line up as well. Sylvia Wiryadi is one of my favorite sopranos who studied in Tubingen Music Academy in Germany, before continuing to University of Music Karlsruhe where she graduated summa cum laude in voice pedagogy in 2005. Just last September, she mesmerized Jakarta’s music society with her stunning interpretation of Strauss’s Fruhlingsstimmen from Die Fledermaus. Another stunning soloist, mezzo-soprano Anna Koor Chooi Choo with her lyrical-dramatic rich, mellow and emotive voice is also known For this year’s concert, Gloriamus as one of Singapore best soloists. Philharmonia under Daru Darsono is planning to perform Messiah part 2 and 3. Handel’s If you are interested to see one of the Messiah lyrics are actually a scriptural text most powerful choir pieces in the history of taken from King James Bible, and from the music, then you must not miss this concert. Psalms included with the Book of Common Hallelujah, it’s Messiah time! Prayer. The text begins in Part 1 with prophecies by Isaiah and others, and moves to the annunciation to the shepherds, the Messiah only “scene” taken from the Gospels. So where do you go next when your debut album is hailed as the first legitimate Britpunk shakeup since Never Mind the Bollocks? Cue wide-eyed bundle through guitar pop, angular indie and, most recently,psychedelic rock with new bestie Josh Homme – all of which was great fun but fell woefully short of their early form. Fifth long player AM marks the completion of Arctic Monkeys from spotty northern chavs who can’t get girlfriends, to leather jacket clad purveyors of sexy rock and/or roll. Here, Alex Turner & Co. have most definitely grown up and shown that all those detours could well have been research for this, their (second) finest work. Case in point; 2012’s Humbug was essentially the Monkeys covering Queens of the Stone Age, but AM sensibly cherry picks the best bits and mixes them up with everything else. The result is like a ‘best of’ from the previous three albums; nicely varied and perfectly executed by a band at the peak of their powers. The whiff of Homme is still present, specifically on backing vocals for “Knee Socks”, but also on opener “Do I Wanna Know”, which seethes with a sinister stoner rock riff. However, lines like “simmer down and pucker up” delivered in that thick Yorkshire brogue keep the desert trip firmly rooted in ‘Rovveram’, and tracks like the whimsically comedic “Why’d You Only Call Me When You’re High” remind us that under the snappy suits and Brylcream they are still four scruffy Sheffielders ‘avin a laff. Perhaps best exemplifying AM’s scope and versatility is“Arabella”. Listen closely and you’ll hear distinct hip hop influences, wit worthy of Elvis Costello; “And when she needs to shelter from reality/She takes a dip in my daydreams”, and guitar riffage to rival Sabbath. As Alex Turner stated in an interview with NME, it’s “like a Dr Dre beat, but we’ve given it an Ike Turner bowl-cut and sent it galloping across the desert on a Stratocaster”. No doubt many will continue to hold Whatever… up as the benchmark, the greatness never to be bettered, but there’s no denying that AM is thrilling stuff. It’s not their best, but it is better than the rest. Dan Ashcroft is hiding behind your toilet seat.

When the two meet, they quickly become an item, but after she catches him red-handed watching those x-rated movies, conflict is abound. Joseph Gordon-Levitt managed to pull off a wonderful directing debut as well as an apt acting performance in this film.

And so, the fashion party begins: Jakarta Fashion Week 2014 was back – and this year it was bigger and better. We joined in on the fashion action to bring you a wrap up of Jakarta Fashion Week 2014. Senayan City transformed into a hive of activity with fashionista’s swarming to the makeshift Fashion Tent and Fashion Atrium to watch Indonesia’s top designers showcase their latest creations, along with a handful of selected international designers. Jakarta Fashion Week 2014 is by far the largest fashion event in the country, attracting overseas media and buyers, local celebrities, and lovers of fashion, and was the place to see and be seen. Simply watching as the crowds filled the Fashion Tent is a show in itself with people dressed in their finest and funkiest threads. Tex Saverio Talented home-grown designer Tex Saverio wowed fashion lovers during Saturday’s opening day, showcasing collections from his freshly launched ready-to-wear line, Tex Saverio Jakarta, which was fresh off the catwalks of Paris Fashion Week, where the line was recently launched. “For me, ‘a goddess’ is a character who always wants to be appreciated. Her persona is unusual with unpredictable and unique appeal. When you talk about her, there is no limit in definition. For this year’s DFK collection, I want to bring up a ‘goddess’ figure from the future who is proficient in the modernity of human, but with the elegance from a different world,” the 29-yearold designer told a press conference before the show. Through the new collection, Tex, who has dressed top celebrities such as Lady Gaga and Kim Kardashian, redefines evening wear by creating silhouette that are effortlessly appealing and flattering to any body type. Cosmic colors like cerulean blue, chartreuse green, champagne and jet black were paired with shimmery, holographic and sheer materials, giving an edgy but light feeling, which is perfect for summer time. In the “It Girls of Fashion” show at the Fashion Tent, L’Oreal Professional presented the fashion collection of three
talented designers and one of them was Peggy Hartanto.
This Surabayan-born woman began to be involved more deeply in the world of fashion when she was taking formal education in fashion at Raffles College of Design and Commerce Sydney, Australia. She graduated with The Best Student award (Award of Excellence), majoring in fashion design. Her collections are known for their innovative and modern material cutting technique. Oscar Lawalata On the occasion of the last show at JFW 2014, Oscar actually participated with the models on the catwalk. He wore a blouse with matching color embroidery made by hand, but made more modern. The fashion show raised funds to assist cardiac surgery for the underprivileged communities, featuring Oscar Lawalata exploration in traditional fabrics from around the archipelago in the modern fashion perspective without losing its traditional elements. Oscar featured a collection of “My Name is Andromeda”, which is a statement of the belief that women’s constellation of strengths and weaknesses is a fusion galaxy of multitalented personalities - the perfect personification of Indonesian women in the pace of the times. He constructed beauty and personality within dresses made from woven geometric wool fiber (viscose) and black silk. The Bazaar Fashion Festival produced IPMI Trend Show 2014, taking place between October 8-9 at Gandaria City’s Skeeno Hall. This really was a gathering of some of the archipelago’s finest design minds, as plenty of runway shows left us with our jaws on the floor in admiration. Here’s a roundup of our favorite looks from standout shows.
STYLE Melancholia by Yogie Pratama Despite its title, this collection left us feeling anything but melancholic; we were, in fact, quite thrilled and excited by it. The show was basically a love letter to a woman’s entire life, with each sequence representing Pratama’s personal interpretation of women throughout the different stages in their lives. The gunmetal grey outfits were unconventional and square in silhouette and roomy below the waist, giving you the impression of a no-nonsense young woman who is all about function over form, needing clothes that provide freedom to freely move about the space she dominates. Our favorite sequence was the second one, featuring gorgeous gold swing dresses that would fit right in an episode of Mad Men. But as visually pleasing as that sequence was, the romantic and reassured appeal of the red dresses in the third sequence was really something else. The red is so very evocative of Valentino, and it makes sense too, as Pratama once told us how Valentino Garavani was one of the designers he would like to hang out with. The Melancholia collection is basically perfect for personalities that resemble, and I’m paraphrasing Humphrey Bogart here, steel with curves. Les Marionettes by Mel Ahyar And then there was this hugely winsome collection by Mel Ahyar, which was ingenious in its implementation of French and Indonesian motifs. We loved how she formed prints out of characters seen in Javanese shadow puppetry, but with a twist! The twist lay in the actual reinterpretation of the Javanese shadow puppets themselves, and how she printed them to look like Sicilian marionettes. It was so very, very clever of her to seamlessly mesh two vastly different forms of puppetry into a single wearable print. Also of note were the accessories, which featured the very same marionnette-ized version of wayang kulit characters. The last two dresses wonderfully summed up the essence of the show: a rehashing of traditional theatrical elements into something a little bit nightmarish (the Javanese wayang kulit characters were re-molded to look like Bozo the Clown’s associates), but still successfully pulling of something beautiful and wearable. The two dresses combined lace and sheer to result in stunning Gothic numbers that were very much Downton Abbey and Corpse Bride all in one. La Mer et du Soleil by Denny Wirawan This is a man, a national treasure, who produces shows that are consistently staggering. This collection was an art exhibit and fashion show in equal parts, but it was also a showcase of traditional Indonesian artistry through a contemporary and groundbreaking medium. Wirawan works with Cita Tenun Indonesia to implement Tenun Sumba into his Balijava label, and this time, he has selected color palettes that were particularly pivotal in getting the collection’s theme across: cool whites and blues to represent water, followed immediately by warm oranges that stood in for the sun. An important element of Wirawan’s most memorable shows have been the headdresses, all provided by Oscar Daniel. The headdresses were just as show stopping as the outfits and added the right touch to the Soleil sequence of the show.

he tapas scene in the capital city is relatively small but blossoming. Caños Tapas Cocina is an addition to that scene and is located at Foundry 8, in SCBD area. The medium-sized, laid-back newbie looks a bit like a cozy neighborhood tapas bar, encouraging a festive lounge atmosphere, especially perfect for after-work happy hour regulars from nearby office buildings and beyond. Caños, by the way, is a Spanish slang word for ‘pal’, or ‘buddy’. On our early evening visit, we certainly saw a good mix of office workers, locals and expats alike, along with some couples, and small groups of friends. It looks like business is quite booming. We were also eager to sample the innovative menu here. Speaking of happy hours, from 4.30 to 6.30pm, you can get three for the price of two on all drinks by the glass. And being in a tapas bar, we had to go with the Sangria (80k). Now, here lies the first twist. Adding lychee and lychee liquor to the merlot and brandy mix, gives a certain je-ne-sais-quoi zing to the sangria.And we liked it! Our visit was certainly off to a great start. There are some typical pork cold cuts of ham, salami, and pancetta bacon which you can order individually (served 50 grams with homemade Sott’oli pickles and breadsticks), but you can also try a little bit of each with the Mixed Cold Cut Platter (225k). There are also a couple of soups (60k, respectively) like the Sopa Catalana - vegetables, herbs and spices, with chorizo sausage, and the

tomato-based, spicy seafood soup, Sopa de Mariscos. Some good salads, in small or large serving, are also available. As we mentioned earlier, the tapas dishes here have a bit of an Asian twist. For example, the Beef Chimicurri (70k) has a hint of Japanesestyle ponzu, and the Gyoza Espanola (40k) is served with sambal sauce. We started with the Pure Beef Meat Balls (45k) which also has a bit of a nice spicy kick. If you’re into the more traditional tapas, try the popular Pulpo Y Chorizo (50k); tasty sautéed octopus and spicy Spanish salami mix. And we also get a taste of Galicia with the Fried Sardine (45k), which was fried in olive oil and served with lemon and crunchy bread. Some Gildas (35k) also made it to our table; skewers of anchovies, with capsicum and olives, wrapped in cooked ham. If you have to have the dessert at Caños, you can’t go wrong with the Churros With Chocolate Sauce (40k), or go for the Rum Baba With Cherry Mousse And Vanilla Ice Cream (50k).Yummm… Later that night, more and more beautiful patrons came in ready to have a nice evening out.This looks like a good place to stop before heading to the clubs. But then again, Caños is also perfect for a good get-together with your gang of friends. Caños Tapas Cocina is definitely a place worth checking out. (Budi Iskandar)

Welcome to a place where France fuses with Japanese flair! ourmand Bistro is one of the newest eateries located at Pondok Indah Mall Street Gallery. Combining French cuisine with an Asian (in this case Japanese) touch, this is one novel idea that can likely catch on with Jakarta’s foodies. And having beautiful Indonesian-French actress and presenter Cathy Sharon as one of Gourmand’s owners might just have something to do with it. At first glance, the restaurant looks more like a cozy Parisian café.A case full of mouth-watering desserts welcomes you as you come in. Then you will see the open kitchen, which adds to the friendly ambiance of a local bistro. You can sit inside, or choose the patio seating should you feel like it. But may we suggest the al fresco dining on a nice, balmy evening, as the daytime heat nowadays can be a bit unbearable.

On one recent, muggy afternoon, we wanted to start with the wonderful Baby Spinach and Wild Rocket Salad (75k), with candied almond, grapes, cherry tomatoes, and honey mustard dressing. Other notable entrées here are the Crispy Mushroom with Honey Miso and Chili Powder (55k) and the very French Oven Baked Escargot with Garlic Butter and Cheese Gratin (80k).

As for the plat principal, we ordered the Salmon Steak with Mushroom, Mashed Potato, and Teriyaki Sauce (155k); two succulent salmon pieces wedge the sautéed mushroom, and accompanied by veggies and mashed potato. We also opted for the Grilled Chicken Thigh with Foie Gras (185k), which was served with steamed rice and teriyaki sauce. The rich foie gras takes this chicken-and-rice dish to a whole new level! There are plenty of options to choose from, from cod fish to duck to rib eye steak, so there’s definitely something for every discerning taste. Of course, the French and Japanese blend is still the main theme for these dishes. There are also some pasta dishes which also show a good blend of East and West; try the Tiger Prawn Pasta with Tomato Sauce and Katsuoboshi (95k), or the Curry Pasta with Crispy Chicken Breast (90k). And of course, you have to make room for the desserts at Gourmand! They got into the cronut craze with the scrumptious Popcorn Cronut and Peanut Chocolate Cronut (25k each). The Apple And Banana Beignets (55k) is also a fine choice, but we must tip our hats to the Layered Black Sesame Cake (55k); the sponge cake is served with crispy chocolate, black sesame ice
cream, coffee ice cream, candied almonds, and mocha. Superb! The Marvelous Peach and the Sparkling Kiwi (40k each) are some of the very refreshing, fruity concoctions perfect to wash down all those rich, delightful dishes. The Tequila Sunrise (95k) is also noteworthy, but if there’s one thing that stands out here, it’s the G-52’s (70k). It is one potent blend of bourbon, Bailey’s, and Kahlua! Gourmand is open for breakfast as they serve quiches, crepes, scones, and sandwiches from 9am. And later in the day, the Afternoon Tea Sets are available from 2 – 5pm.These delectable dessert sets come with hot coffee or hot tea, with prices ranging from 50k to 70k. h Kemang… There’s always something new and exciting to discover in this part of town; especially when it comes to eateries. And it’s always nice to uncover a hidden gem or two in the foodie world here like this one. Some friends of ours have been mentioning Pizza Barboni to us a lot recently. So we headed to a seemingly desolate strip of stores on the back street of La Codefin. Boy, were we in for a scrumptious surprise. At first glance, Pizza Barboni looks like a basic, no-frills pizza joint. The restaurant is smallish, with only a few tables, but there’s a certain warmth to the place that we found endearing. And no, it’s not from the wood-fire oven in the kitchen. The cozy, neighborhood trattoria-style vibe inside can only come from when an eatery is run by passionate food lovers, and it clearly shows here.

The wonderful smell of freshly baked pizza drifts through the air when we stepped in. The staff greeted us to the warmly lit eatery.And we also got to meet one of the co-founders, who explained to us a little bit about Pizza Barboni. ‘Barboni’ is the plural Italian word for ‘bearded guys’. There’s even a large cartoon image of a bearded man as a pizza chef hanging on the wall, with a motto ‘Trust The Crust’! Now we were getting more and more excited to try those pizzas. The menu board gets right to the point. The pizzas are of course the center of attention here.Yes, there are a couple of starters like the Caprese Salad (45k) and the Rocket Salad (35k) for you to begin. And there are Pizzotinos as well. More on that later. Our host, who has spent much time in Italy, suggested we try the most basic pizza here, the Margherita (45k). But there’s something about this mozzarella, tomato sauce, and basil combination. You can really feel the TLC going into the hand-made pizza. Simply sublime.
If you’re into pork, there’s the Parma (80k) with Parma ham, the Salame (65k) with Italian salami, and the Diavola (70k) with salami and a bit of a devilish kick from the chili flakes and chili oil. We were also recommended to try the Vegetariana (65k). And when you think vegetarian pizzas are bland, think again. We can’t really explain it, but this one won our hearts. Kudos to the kitchen staff! Now, Pizzotino is a smaller, square pizza specially created here. There are some savory types to choose from, but we just couldn’t resist the Nutella Pizzotino (45k). Pizza as dessert? Oh yes, please! The flat bread is generously topped with Nutella, whipped cream, and slices of banana. Delectably divine! There are still a lot of pizza varieties to try here. The story of Nintendo‘s 2DS handheld begins today, yet its legacy traces back all the way to 1989. Today Nike took to its special FuelForum event in New York City to unveil the latest evolution of the acclaimed FuelBand: the Nike+ FuelBand SE. Sealed for superior water-resistance, the activity-tracking band has been tweaked and made even smarter to better credit deliberate movements while filtering out those that shouldn’t earn as much “Fuel.” The FuelBand SE also implements Bluetooth 4.0, thus ending the days of complicated syncing in favor of a device that’s now in constant connection with your phone and corresponding Nike+ FuelBand app. Nike even announced the establishment of the so-called Nike+ FuelLab in San Francisco: a forum that allows the area’s countless tech companies to use Nike+ APIs in new and exciting ways.
