On August 17 Indonesia will celebrate its most important day; Hari Merdeka or Independence Day. Being 68-years-old, this country is very much enjoying its freedom- similar to a kid in college that is being developed, both intellectually and socially. The nation is not afraid to let itself be exposed to new things, and for the most part, embraces new forms of arts and entertainment. One particular form of entertainment new to Jakarta is the One Fighting Championship, an international caliber mixed martial arts live show set to be held next month. The world now knows that Indonesia is hungry for entertainment, and not just in the form of music concerts and operas; sports fans were spoiled with the arrival of big time football clubs Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea last month- all of which helped fill in the need for entertainment during fasting month. This year’s independence celebration will be marked with several “returns” that ought to change the city for the better. Many Jakartans will return to the city after a weeklong Lebaran holiday- which the Muslims believe is a return to all things holy after a month of being purified. As you can see in our event’s timeline, this month also marks the return of big music concerts, one being the highly anticipated return of Metallica to Jakarta after their last concert here two decades ago. Not just returns, also this month we will see the first ever Indonesian Jass Festival, a two-day jazz festival featuring over 100 of Indonesia’s most talented jazz musicians. Arthur’s Day will also be held in other cities in Indonesia, Medan, Surabaya, Makassar, and Bali with a rock band from North Carolina, Fire House performing at those cities. Gebyar Batik Muda Nusantara 2013 Gebyar Batik Muda Nusantara 2013 (GMBN) is an annual event that is promoted by Putra Putri Batik Nusantara (PPBN) together with Ikatan Pecinta Batik Nusantara (IPBN). This is one of the pre events before Pemilihan Putra Putri Batik Nusantara 2013 which will be held on September – October 2013. GMBN will held on August 23 – 25 in Kota Kasablanka. There will be activities involving Batik, such as a bazaar, batik competition, workshop, talk shows, modern dance, a young batik designer competition, and a children’s fashion competition. SCOOP Anime Festival Asia Indonesia 2013 (AFA ID 2013) After the 1st Anime Festival in 2012, Anime Festival Asia in Indonesia is back again and will bring Japanese culture direct from Tokyo to Jakarta. Sumo Tournament in Jakarta 2013 2013 is the 40th anniversary of friendship and cooperation between Japan and ASEAN countries as well as the 55th anniversary of Japan and Indonesia’s diplomatic relations. This Sumo tournament is officially certified as the 40th year of ASEAN-Japan Friendship and Cooperation by the Japanese Foreign Ministry, Nihon Sumo Kyokai, and Gotanda Denshi are aiming to build stronger diplomatic friendship by presenting sumo to the people of Indonesia. The tournament will be held on Saturday and Sunday, August 24 – 25 in Istora Senayan.

Farah Wardani is one busy lady. Frequently asked to judge national art competitions, Farah's main responsibility is her job managing the Indonesian Visual Arts Archive. In her spare time she is the artistic director responsible for preparing the 12th Yogyakarta Biennale to be held in November, 2013. Her life definitely revolves around art.
What music are you into at the moment? Joining the hype: Daft Punk’s Random Access Memories. I’ve been interested in Daft Punk since they first came out with that “Around The World” video and then, of course, the Interstella 5555 album. But this latest album is quite something, especially since they’ve got Pharell and Nile Rodgers (I always love Chic!) on board—and it’s so well-produced. All the tracks sound really fresh and sassy plus those Nile tracks with their retro-disco touch. Love it. Another one is Karat & Arang, a double LP by my long-time friend Adrian Adioetomo. I’m so very proud of him and this time, I think he really nails it—this album is a very solid body of work, and it’s so him, with his beloved Dobro.

What was the first record you bought—any interesting story behind it? Wow this is tough… it was decades ago! I think it must have been Madonna’s Like A Virgin, which was 1984. I was nine and got my mom to buy it for me at Duta Suara, Sabang. One of those cassette tapes from local record pirates that didn’t show the original album cover, just some pin-up image of Madonna, which was pretty tame compared to the real cover. What are your all-time favourite albums? Why? This is even tougher... there’s a lot. But since one has to make choices:
FEATURES Tori Amos’ Little Earthquakes was the soundtrack of my teenage years (hmm… make it from high school to college!), mixed with Under The Pink. This album was like a gospel for every wallflower-weirdo-teen girl alive at that time. I took every song personally, especially “Winter” and “Precious Things”. This was before Tori got bottomed and went crazy making those unlistenable concept albums.
never listen to anymore but sometimes still sing the songs in karaoke for guilty pleasure. I don’t really count them because I don’t think they’re worth caring about. But on the other hand I do remember my disappointment when buying Steve Vai’s Alien Love Secrets. I used to have a huge crush on him, loved his previous two albums, but that one is just plain forgettable.
Tears for Fears’ Seeds of Love because I was in junior high school when Seeds of Love came out and it changed my preferences so much at that time. I mean, one minute I was one of the girls going ga-ga over New Kids On The Block and then my crush shifted to Roland Orzabal—who I love until now.
Who do you want to be, other than yourself, next time you reincarnate? I would love to be a man for a change, doing something non-artsy, or just not in the creative field. Something spartan. Maybe an athlete. Or fitness instructor.
What book are you reading now and what’s the score (1-10)? I don’t read many books anymore. I’m reading books now mostly for references or theoretical basis for my writings—so it’s basically for work. Now it’s Archive and The Repertoire by Diana Taylor, a book on documentation of theatre and performing arts, since I am writing an essay for Teater Garasi’s 20th anniversary book. nyone who has been in Indonesia for a number of years will have realised that the difference in year length between the Gregorian (Western) and Muslim calendars means that the holy month of Ramadan plus the Idul Fitri holiday immediately afterwards occur about 10 days ‘earlier’ each year when measured by the Gregorian calendar. Ramadan once fell around the end of the year; it runs from early July to early August this year, while next year it will run from late June to late July. This means that the year’s two major shopping seasons, Ramadan and Christmas/New Year, which once overlapped, are now clearly separated by almost six months, creating two distinct peaks in the shopping calendar. The Jakarta Great Sale Festival, held to celebrate the anniversary of the capital city’s founding on June 22 (but also timed to coincide with the school holidays) ended in mid-July and was reckoned by its organizers a commercial success. Indeed, they are talking about the possibility of a Java-wide event next year.

can’t be denied that during the month of Ramadhan, Kemang entertainment happenings are put on a temporary hold. And although Lebaran (end of Ramadhan) is scheduled around August 8, traditionally for the one or even two weeks ahead there will still be a scarcity in partying as the Kemang workforce shall enjoy their annual Lebaran holiday. Be it in the city or going home to their villages in Java, Sumatra, Kalimantan and Sulawesi, people are using this time to chill and catch up with relatives - similar to the Lunar New Year in China and Christmas in the West. So the million dollar question is “when will Kemang be back in full swing”? Although still unconfirmed, some of the party houses in Kemang plan to throw an

“opening party” on August 24, but it’s safe to assume that August 31 we will see a more “normal” party situation down in the strip. Located across the street from KFC Kemang, Souly Butter has been the go-to cake shop for Kemang residents for years. Although the shop is only the size of a college dorm room, the place fits a kitchen, mini lounge and even display rack all in one. Aside from the carrot cake, their star attraction is the Red Velvet cake and muffin, which was already popular amongst its loyal customers way before Union (Plaza Senayan) put Red Velvet on the map back in 2012.

For Kemang regulars, Fourties (40’s) is known as a karaoke joint/ lounge/ restaurant. But what many don’t know is that they also have baked some pretty awesome cakes for over a year now. Aside from the typical cheese cake and black forest, 40’s cake shop’s best pick is the Blueberry Ombre, which is a mouthful of different textures of blueberry, but not in any way overwhelming. hen I met Bernadeta Astari (a young Indonesian soprano star that is studying and living in Holland) a couple months ago in Jakarta, I remember discussing an opera with her. Opera Attima, een Javaanse Liefdestragedie (Javanese Tragedy Love Story) is not just an ordinary opera. It has a unique mixture of both eastern and western elements and the only opera from Indische (Dutch name for Indonesia during the colonial time) before 1945. It is actually a fact that during colonial times in Indonesia, not only traders traveled here, but also music composers from Netherlands. Inspired by their experience here, composers such as Constant van der Wall, Paul Seelig, Linda
CLASSICAL Bandara and Bernard van den Sigtenhorst Meyer adopted many traditional melodies, stories and norms that are actually influenced by Indonesian culture.
Attima was first premiered on January 8, 1917 at Koninklijke Schouwburg van Den Haag before continuing to Theatre de l’Opera Royal Francais de La Haye in France a few years after it. The opera was performed in Batavia (now Jakarta) in 1922. Critics at that time praised this opera for its original music, universal strength and the aesthetic side that was reflected in the composition. After Attima, Constant van de Wall also composed many works that has Indonesian and Melayu inspirations which earned him the title “Componist tussen oost en west” – the composer between east and west.
Opera Attima (short for “heart” and “gold” in Dutch) is a result of composer Constant van de Wall’s experience during his stay in Indonesia. Gamelan sounds and pentatonic harmony that is a trademark of Indonesia can be heard clearly throughout his opera. Constant van de Wall composed both music and libretto focusing on the life of Attima – a Javanese dancer that fell in love with a Dutch boy name Armand. Image aside, it’s not hard to see why 2008’s debut effort Walking on a Dream went twice platinum on home turf and gold in the notoriously-hard-to-crack US of A, the feel good disco euphoria contained therein having the same sort of effect as a bottle of Ritalin - you just can’t sit still on it. Happily, Ice on the Dune picks up exactly where Walking… left off, whooshing us straight back off to the outer reaches of their fanciful netherworld of cerebral electro-wizardry. How much you choose to immerse yourself in what the pair have described as a “post apocalyptic adventure” is up to you, but with such does-what-it-says-on-the-tin song titles like ‘Surround Sound”, “Awakening” and “Celebrate” resistance becomes increasingly futile, and by the time the anthemic “Loving every minute ‘cause you make me feel so alive” chorus on “Alive” rolls around three tracks in you’d have to be deaf not to be shouting along with everyone else. Careless listeners may rashly write Ice on the Dune off as the sort of cheap thrill you might find at the more commercial end of the biz, but as with all the best proper recent pop (Saint Etienne’s Words and Music or Daft Punk’s acclaimed Random Access Memories spring to mind) Steele and Littlemore have real songwriting chops, meaning that the arrangements are spot on and the ubiquitous homages to pop’s past are never far from bubbling to the surface. “Concert Pitch” and “I’ll be Around” re-imagine effortless Fleetwood Mac style melodies for the digital generation - all that’s missing are the Lindsay Buckingham guitar solos, but otherwise they are both flawless highpoints. “Keep a Watch” is pure Bowie, perhaps a little too thick admittedly, but a worthy closer to an exceptional LP nonetheless. Whether Ice on the Dune eclipses their debut is anyone’s guess, but if you’re going to be in Bali over the next few months then expect it to be the soundtrack to the high season. Dan Ashcroft is out to lunch.

If you’ve watched Pirates of the Carribean and Rango, where Gore Verbinski and Johhny Depp worked together, you may have some high expectations. I wouldn’t put those expectation too high though, because if you do, you’re going to have an ordinary time watching this roller coaster of a cowboy ride.

STYLE Eye on The Runway Marking the debut of his tenure at Balenciaga, Alexander Wang showed his first collection for the lore-rich house recently in Paris. Circle-cut hemlines, voluminous sleeves and boneless shoulders were all apparent just as founder Cristóbal Balenciaga and later Nicolas Ghesquière would have done. Thus, its new chief made an undoubtedly smart choice in decelerating his own street bravado in favor of Balenciaga’s norms — the only evident Wangisms were iterations of exposed strapless bras and a black column dress featuring the same waist-wrap drape used at his eponymous fall collection in New York. On a brighter note, Wang’s footwear looks promising – marble-whorled on the soles and punishingly chic in their pointed tips and perilous toe-cleavage. But no matter how sharp the shoe, baby steps (almost literally, considering the designer’s 20-something years) need to be taken, where Wang succeeded. Sensitivities met, his next challenge is to find a way to make it all pop. he timing could not have been more perfect for Swatch to release their new Scuba Libre Collection. It’s summertime in most parts of the world, which means we’re in full holiday mode. What other watch would be more fun to wear during the holidays than the fun-colored timekeepers on offer from Swatch? Holidays sometimes involve beaches and pool sides, which means plenty of playing in the water. SMOKEY GREEN EYES
I
reviewed the Lunasol Modelling Glossy Eyes in #02 Soft Khaki some time ago and I promised a step-by-step guide to creating the smokey eye look with this palette, which will be a dark green one. The color payoff from every single color pan in this palette is fantastic, and the applicators are actually usable. So instead of reaching for my trusted brushes, I created the looks below by using the two applicators provided in the palette.
I used my finger to lightly dab on the cream eyeshadow on my whole lid as a base, but if you have oil-prone lids, I suggest that you use your most trusted eyeshadow primer for longer staying power. This one has a shimmery finish, so I don't have to apply a highlighter on the browbone.
With the flat brush, apply the taupe-ish green eyeshadow to your lid up to the crease line. Dab the brush lightly since this eyeshadow is quite pigmented and you don't want an eyeshadow fallout disaster on your hands.
With the other end of the brush applicator, I applied the dark green and created a V-shape in the outer corner of my eyes. Don't worry about blending it just yet, we just want to apply eyeshadow at that area first.

This is where the pointy sponge applicator comes in handy. Dab it lightly in the green eyeshadow with the golden shimmer.
Apply it to your lower waterline - not exactly at the waterline but just below it. Start at the outer corner of your eyes until you cover 3/4 of your waterline. Again, to avoid any eyeshadow fallout disaster, don't put too much product on the applicator.
With the other side of the sponge applicator, apply the highlighting shade to the inside corners of your eye and waterline and blend it towards the dark green shade that you just applied. Et voila, this is the final look. I just apply eyeliner and mascara to finish off the look.
This look could go for real full-on smokey eyes, depending how high you want to define the crease line. It depends on your preference. Since I had to go to dinner with friends afterward, I toned it down a bit. Enjoy your new smokey eyes!

he fashion festival season is upon us! A flurry of press conferences have recently been held in anticipation of fashion week season, one of these being Jakarta Fashion Week 2014. Earlier this week, the media were gathered together to hear about the commencement of the Grazia Model Search 2013. Judge Diaz Parazada stated that Jakarta Fashion Week is more than just a festival, but rather a forum that hopes to shake up the industry by introducing new talents through competition. The model search is just one of the many competitions that will be held throughout JFW, which includes the storied designer competition (Lembaga Perancang Mode), and a contest especially crafted for fashion bloggers! Even earlier this month, we were rounded up to hear the announcement of yet another show at a different fashion festival: the IPMI Trend Show 2014 at the Bazaar Fashion Festival. The Council of Indonesian Fashion Designers (IPMI) is the oldest, most

respected fashion institution in this country. Members initiated into this circle of elite designers have been carefully selected by senior council members based on a strict but organic set of criteria, which includes consistency, identity, and a strong following. If this were Star Trek, they are basically the Vulcan High Council. The annual IPMI Trend Show remains a strong event after its debut nearly thirty years ago. Flanked between IPMI head Tri Handoko and Iwan Tirta creative director Era Soekamto, was Harper’s Bazaar Indonesia Editor-in-Chief Ria Lirungan. She explained how her publication has always corralled and showcased new talents in Indonesian fashion. Era Soekamto further stressed how necessary it is for the Council to evolve, and to enrich Indonesian fashion by holding annual trend shows that do not mislead the masses. IPMI has
a responsibility to hold fleshed-out shows, and one way it is doing that this year is by cementing new commitment with Harper’s Bazaar Indonesia. That afternoon, IPMI also announced the addition of three new council members among its ranks, whose names already hold plenty of clout: Danny Satriadi, Yogie Pratama, and Mel Ahyar are no strangers to praise. Their respective lines, brands, and fans have earned them the respect of senior IPMI members. Tri Handoko stated that the respective designers’ trademark style and established names in the industry were critical to their rising among the elite IPMI ranks, but they were also singled out for the interview portion of their selection process, in which they exhibited a vision and mission that mirrored that of IPMI’s. Era Soekamto had difficulty trying to pinpoint a single criteria that led the council to their final decision, at last settling to describe the three as possessing a “shining” factor. They were selected for strong characters, techniques, and readiness to unionize. While no dates have been announced just yet for the Bazaar Fashion Festival, we can safely announce Jakarta Fashion Week 2014 will be held between October 19-25 at Senayan City for the first time ever. How Two Fit Girls Stay In Shape Through Ramadhan (by Hanzky)
Tiara, the proprietor of Eat Love Lift, has a wonderful circle of clients: they are a bunch of wonderful ladies who are determined to live a healthier life by exercising and eating nutritiously. Some of her first clients were Dinda Utami and Rini Harsono. I’m amazed by how quickly they’ve transformed their body by shedding body fat and getting stronger. Just like Tiara, Dinda is a mom of two, so they are my personal inspirations when it comes to committing and finding the time to exercise, as I have two kids myself. So since this is Ramadhan, I’m curious to know how they are going to incorporate exercise and clean eating throughout the fasting month. I thought they were planning on slacking off a little bit, but it turns out when you are as determined as they are, you won’t give yourself any excuses! Let’s find out how they plan on doing that! How long have you been working out and eating clean? Dinda: I have always been active, and I go to the gym about three to four times a week. I am currently doing Cross Fit two times a week and hit the gym the other two times a week. I have started eating clean for the about five months now by eating as many fresh foods as possible while avoiding sugar and processed foods. Rini: Three months. At first I only

went to the gym but now I do Cross Fit and swim occasionally on my active recovery days. So what’s the plan for Ramadhan? Dinda: So far, there are no changes to my workout plan. I may tone down the intensity at the gym during the first week of Ramadhan as my body may need to adjust to my new eating schedule. Rini: Still exercising and clean eating. I will try to do my usual heavy workout first and see how my body handles it. I’ll push myself but will also listen to my body. How are you going to incorporate exercise into the new schedule? Dinda: The best time for me to exercise

is after breaking my fast. I will have some small bites before working out and then eat a proper meal within an hour of my workout. I will still do Cross Fit and other exercises at the gym. Rini: Just like Dinda, I like working out after breaking fast. I’ll lift weights at the gym and do Cross Fit. It’s business as usual. How about the eating plan? Dinda: This year is going to be different than last year. I’m going to limit sugar loading during fast-breaking and replace them with fresh and real food like fruits or kurma. For the big meal, I will eat complex carbs during sahur and proteinveggies only during my evening meal. Rini: I’m going to stick with my clean eating program because I feel that I have more energy since I’ve changed my eating habit. When breaking fast during Ramadhan, I consume whey protein and fruits with a high energy payoff, like dates and bananas. I’ll also have my favorite fruit, watermelon, an hour
before working out. I eat dinner after working out and will have more proteins, vegetables, and complex carbs. What’s your #FitNFab goal during Ramadhan? Dinda: I want to get leaner maybe bring down my body fat to 20% from the current 22%. Rini: To be stronger and see progress. Hopefully I can do deadlifts and squats with heavier weights. My overall target is to reduce body fat by 10%, so a decrease in body fat during this Ramadhan is the goal. See, Ramadhan is not an excuse to slacken off. Idul Fitri is coming and there will be more sugary and floury treats full of fat coming our way. Common People Eatery & Bar is a Kemang establishment that has quickly gained a firm following, so much so that they boast a full house on the weekends and most nights. The interior is rustic chic with stripped down industrial décor. Check out the gorgeous chandeliers! The dining area is quite airy, and the communal tables are set for casual conversations among new friends. The lounge area on the side looks very comfy, with plush sofas and warm wooden floor and exposed brick wall juxtaposing nicely. There’s a cozy patio seating area if you feel like dining al fresco, too. Although the ambiance is playful, the kitchen takes their job very seriously. Common People is a labor of love for New York-educated owner and head chef Hendry Johannes. The place just

personifies his travel and culinary experiences. Try the Caesar Salad (55k) as starter; it’s like your typical Caesar salad, but with a little extra oomph, courtesy of the roasted garlic, spiced chicken, and anchovy dressing! The People’s Burger (65k) really hit the bull's eye; homemade beef patty and burger bun, with glazed mushroom, Parmesan crisp, and special house spread, served with potato crisps. Highly recommended. As for dessert, the Common Platter (85k) is just perfect; petite-sized Molten Chocolate Fondant, Pannacotta, and Fruit Pavlova that’ll surely satisfy your sweet cravings. These individual items can also be ordered as fullsized desserts, should you feel like it. Common People is open for breakfast, and boy, do they serve a mean spread! Don’t expect a huge dining area with extensive buffet like those big hotels, but what they lack in size they make up in warmth.The eatery looks more like a cozy city café. There’s a medium-sized dining area by the front entrance, and there’s also a lounge on the right side of the room. This lounge area is somewhat inviting; it could be a good place to hold a casual business talk, or to have a nice dinner with a loved one.

We began with the hearty Potato Leek Soup (45k); this creamy soup is served with a puff pastry stick and chicken sausage skewer. For a more exotic type of soup, you can try the Herbal Chicken Soup (45k); a nutritious Chinese herbal clear soup with chicken and Chinese spices.
Mezza’s desserts also win big points. Try the Apple Tatin (38k); baked apple tart topped with vanilla ice cream, and served with buco salad and butter scotch sauce, or the Cassata (38k); a classic Italian ice cake served with almond darcquise and fruit mix, with white wine sabayon sauce. Sweet!
The Ruben Sandwich (65k) doesn’t exactly say ‘New York’, but it’s still quite good; smoked beef and cheese on white bread with mayonnaise, lettuce, and tomato, and served with a side of fries. Go for the Club Sandwich (75k) instead; The food at Mezza is actually pretty good.
