Ramadhan is the holiest of months for the Muslim people of the world and combined with Idul Fitri, is one of the biggest religious events of the year in the great city of Jakarta. This year Ramadhan arrives on July 9 apparently. I say apparently because every year there seems to be a lot of debate on which date it actually starts and sometimes the government or Islamic scholars can make a late change from one day to the next with very little warning, Idul Fitri comes in the first part of August. Ramadhan is a peaceful time of self reflection and self control, it’s also a time of good will as the majority of the city’s population are fasting through the day from sun-up til’ sundown. They fast from food, drink, being rowdy and sex. Buka Puasa is a traditional time of family and friends enjoying dishes shared in homes and restaurants all over town. It’s a time of togetherness and brotherhood. For foreign expats and others of different religious persuasions the experience can be a little dismaying as finding food through the day becomes a cloak and dagger exercise of sorts, and finding a drink can even be harder. However, as you will see during the time of Ramadhan, not everyone is fasting and it’s not as desolate as one might imagine. I don’t know if there are any figures anywhere on how many people do partake in the fasting practice of Ramadhan in Jakarta, but one thing is for sure, the great majority of Muslim people do slow down on their revelry. The rule of thumb though is that if the bar or club is in a mall or hotel it will still be open but hours are limited. So this month of July and this month’s edition of the beat magazine is all about the food. Also there’s a nice slice of fashion to behold too. But before the month of fasting begins, we have the preRamadhan closing parties around almost all the venues in town. It’s your last chance to get out and about before the shutters come down. Check inside for some of the events and may you have a great and relaxing Ramadhan in the big city.

In

a country the size of Indonesia, when a pretty little thing gets dubbed “the next big thing” there must be something pretty damn special about her. You can’t help but wonder what it is that makes her great. Right now, this is happening to a girl called Neonomora. Her one single, “You Want My Love,” released in November 2012, saw her almost instantly labeled as one of the lucky few—a girl with one of the brightest futures in the Indonesian music scene. And that’s quite a statement. So, is she that good? And does she deserve it? I’m not sure, it’s hard to evaluate when labels such as the one given to her are, more often than not, handed out according to the rules of the major music mechanics within Indonesia’s music industry. Let’s discard labelling her further and listen. Following on from her star-status single, she got people hooked further when she released the video clip for “You Want My Love” back in February this year. With this, Neonomora lovers began to pop up all around the globe; Aussies, Americans, and folks from Southeast Asia, several European countries, and China all began paying serious attention. Several weeks ago a second single called “Fight” appeared and with this, the converted are more than willing to vouch for the validity of her aforementioned label. “Fight” is a brilliant track and has already begun to strengthen her position. When she sings “You Want My Love”, Neonomora still sounds a touch too much like Florence Welch and yes, whilst that does still make her amazing, for “Fight” she has slowly begun to search out her own path. To this self-exploration, she’s added banjo and mandolin, there’s Latin exoticism and a Middle-Eastern feel added in there too, and—just like her first— it’s definitely majestic. When asked when her full-length debut is likely to be released, the Jakarta-based singer gave only a few hints; “The album will reach record stores this year but I

can’t share t h e exact d a t e s just yet but I can tell you that the songs, all nine of them, have already been through the final mixing and mastered process. I might add one more song so it’s 10 in total. Why? After all the positive responses I have received, my mood has been boosted, and I’m changing. This additional song will summarise my evolution.” Born in 1988 as Ratih Suryahutamy, she’s actually not a newcomer to performing and started to sing at three years old. Her first performance was on Christmas night, back when she was still little and lived in the United States. Her mother used to be a singer, her brother is a musician, and the only thing she’s very sure about is that she was born to sing. Her talent must come from her DNA. What else do we know? Her brother, Bam Mastro, will be included as a main collaborator for her upcoming first record. The main theme of the album is her life journey, and chronicles how the seed of Neonomora came into the universe and continues to evolve. Therefore lyrics will cruise around the topics of love, hatred, betrayals, death, loss, respect, gratitude, vows, birth, rivalry, conspiracy, and politics. Or as she puts it, “Life in all its ups and downs summed up in poetry full of melody.” Expand your horizons to Neonomora and you’ll soon understand why Indonesia is one of the most respected music entities in Southeast Asia. Go ahead, google her. www.beatmag.com

insider’s view Irene Murphy is one of the partners at Molly Malone’s Irish Pub in Arcadia Senayan, and TBJ caught up for a chat after The 80’s Beat Party last month about the bar and bar life in the big city of Jakarta. TBJ: How do you like being involved in bars in Jakarta? Is it good fun? Irene: Yes, it can be fun at times, but it also takes a lot of hard work. I run the office for both bars so I continually have to deal with suppliers, staff, admin and many unforseen issues that come up from time to time in Jakarta. TBJ: How did Molly Malone’s come about? Irene: Murphy’s in Kemang has been quite successful so we decided we would give another Irish Pub a try in another part of

26

FEATURES the city. The location in Arcadia came up mid 2012 and we went through a long process to determine if it was right for us. In the end we felt the potential is there for a well run Irish Pub, so Murphy’s sister, Molly was born, TBJ: Have you personally been involved in running bars before Murphy’s? Irene: My uncle has had some bars in the past but very different to what Irish Pubs provide. I spent 10 years living in Dublin so I suppose I have spent plenty of time in Irish Pubs (being married to an Irishman afterall) so my experience on the customer’s side is quite good. I have also lots of experience in accounting and working for banks, so dealing with money is always an important aspect of any business, not least running Irish pubs. TBJ: Arcadia Senayan appears to be a good set-up and seems to attract a lot of bules (foreigners). Why do you think that is? Irene: Senayan in general is a very nice place to live, work and shop so we do get a good mix of people who either live in the area or their company is based close by. There is a new hotel and apartment block built so hopefully the number of people in the area will continue to grow. TBJ: What do you think Molly’s has going for it? Why do people keep on coming back? Irene: An Irish Pub’s key strength is making people feel like they are at home. This come’s from a few things like the layout of the place, the decor, bric a brac, dark wood and furniture....We have tried to replicate as best we could what a real Irish pub looks like....Further to this, due to the space we have in Arcadia, we decided to open a live music area which can be used for private parties, events etc.... So in essence we have two pubs in one. One side you can have a quiet drink and

chat and a bite to eat, whereas on the other side – that’s more for later in the evening when the time is right to party or dance etc..... TBJ: Are there regular events in the music area? Irene: Yes, as mentioned, the right hand side of Molly’s is more for live music, DJ events, private parties or co-operate gatherings. There are many uses actually and it has become very popular for companies and groups to book the whole place out for an evening/night... We have regular live bands in there from Thursday to Saturday but can open it up upon request. TBJ: What did you think of the 80’s Beats party the other night? Irene: The Beat’s party was a great success for Molly’s with a great vibe thoughout the night. We saw many new faces in Molly’s which we hope will be people who will return on a regular basis. We definitely will have The Beat back again in the future for more similar type parties. By the way, I am a big fan of 80s music so the night for me was fantastic. www.beatmag.com

TBJ: KEMANG

F

or a whole month starting July 8-9 our Muslim brothers and sisters are obligated to take part in fasting. And this implies more than just skipping lunch; Muslims are advised to fill in their days (and nights) with spiritual and charitable activities, so partying in essence is put on hold. As a result, many of the Kemang party venues hibernate during Ramadhan, and for the places that still operate close early and are instructed to stash their booze in the lockup. No alcohol is seen as a way to respect muslims that are observing the fasting month. Before the major nightlife venues are temporarily put on ice, they shall throw massive “closing parties” which will happen during the first weekend of July. So be sure to take part in the madness as there will be no more partying for a whole month! After a “closing” party, a week after the end of Ramadhan these venues will also throw a follow-up “opening” party, which is something to look forward to considering thirsty party-goers are more than ready to hit the dance floor. Have no fear though as this doesn’t mean Kemang will be deserted this month; it is business as usual for the majority of restaurants and cafes, albeit closedoff bars. People still come and meet in Kemang restaurants for their long tradition of break-fasting together with family and friends. The restaurants we contacted said on top of their regular menu, they offer inclusive tajil (a variety of sugary drinks and snacks for break-fasting). Also don’t be surprised to see some restaurants cover

30

www.beatmag.com

up their window blinds during the day. No they are not closed, it is done just to show respect to those who are fasting. Not limited to just Kemang, but many of the entertainment venues citywide will also go for what they claim as a “monthlong renovation”. But the word on the street is that some venues in “anything goes” Kota will still operate, so if you need an entertainment fix, simply head north. Although we do have to warn you that there is a higher chance of raids by the police checking for any illegalities lying around the premises. ot missing out on all of the action, Kemang’s southern tip is also going ahead as The Broadway Kemang, a lifestyle destination that first opened its doors earlier this year, is coming alive. One by one the five retails spaces are filled and now only one is still vacant. Here is the skinny on the shops:

This place basically covers everything from fashion, to home decor, to photography. Their specialty is their custom designed “wall concepts” created specifically for a particular customer. The idea is customers send in photos of spaces (walls) of their home that they’d like to add a special design (personal photos, or paintings, or ornaments). Then Lovely Alley will send back photos with various design concepts, and then will also execute the project. Their core is in photography with a portfolio spanning from maternity pictures, to events, to products. Lovelyalley.com

The front part of the first floor is a clothing boutique with a chilled desserts display in the middle. The middle and back end of the first floor is a restaurant whipping up Indonesian fare. The second floor is the Jakflo creative center where they offer a variety of arts and crafts classes, including cakery, floristry, beads jewelry, gift wrapping and any custom hobby training that is requested by a customer. Their students range from children to adults that have learned crafts in the Teras Putih classrooms, and also during after school activities, group gatherings and birthday parties. Teras Putih started off as a floristry training center back in 2005 and is owned by a European “master florist”. jakflo.com

The two-storied coffee house brews some of the best Indonesian single origins, such as Java raung, Toraja, Wamena from Papua, and also the prized civet coffee, famously known as kopi luwak. Their coffee machine of choice is a premium La Marzocco espresso machine, a brand famous amongst baristas, and has a rich history in coffee making considering their machines date back to the 1920s in Florence, Italy. The first floor is both for the on-the-go customers and for those that want to slowly enjoy their cuppa. And as for the second floor it is space for large groups that want to throw intimate get-togethers. coffeebreathjakarta.com

On the first floor of 2Madison is the 2Mad Eatery, which they claim is as a New York inspired eatery. They serve classic Western food, added with some Asian fusion options. The main attraction is the grill selection, and another crowd favorite is the NY Style burger. On the second floor is where they showcase local designer’s fun, modern and edgy home accessories; from pet beds to sofas to paintings. The name 2Madison comes from the idea that they believe their products are so good that someday will make its way “to Madison” Avenue, New York. 2madison.com

CLASSICAL

www.beatmag.com

CLASSICAL ometimes I wonder if people read this column as it is quite niche and purely dedicated to the classical music lovers out there. Nevertheless, for those of you that read this column religiously, allow me to say thank you. It is quite interesting for me to see how much our classical music scene has change and that we are now having more and more recitals and concerts every week compared to before. One of the groups that consistently perform regularly in Jakarta is none other than the Jakarta Simfonia Orchestra with their choir, Jakarta Oratorio Society. For this summer, they will bring us music from the baroque to romantic era featuring Bach, Rameau, Smetana and Dvorak. However before I go discussing their program for this concert, there is a grave mistake that just irritates me. The title of this concert, “Mid Year Concert 2013 – Medieval and Renaissance Choral Music featuring Bach, Rameau, Smetana and Dvorak”. This is quite surprising to see that Aula Simfonia Jakarta could make such a mistake. Perhaps it was intended, but how could they miss the fact that Bach and Rameau only existed during the baroque period while Smetana and Dvorak do not even alive until the romantic period. There is nothing medieval or even renaissance about these composers.

From triumphant heavenly melodies, Jakarta Simfonia Orchestra chose Rameau’s calming Pieces de Clavecin no. 4 for solo harpsichord. In these three movements, the harpsichord is at the heart of the ensemble, playing with virtuosity and accompanied by the violin and viola da gamba. After this subtle piece, the orchestra will later bring you to a rather dramatic piece by Smetana called “Ma Vlast Moldau” (My Homeland). Known as the father of Czech music, Smetana’s “Ma Vlast Moldau” is actually a set of six symphonic poems but often presented as a single work in six movements, though they were conceived as individual works. In these beautiful works, Smetana combined the symphonic poem depicting some aspects of the countryside, history and legends of Bohemia. The last piece of this mid year concert comes from Dvorak’s therapeutic “Serenade for Strings in E-Major”. This serenade is very well known and remains one of the composer’s more popular orchestral works to this day. It’s the kind of music that will give you a nice feeling after hearing it.

Even with their misleading title, Aula Simfonia Jakarta’s Mid Year Concert 2013’s program selection should be very good. I Anyway, moving on to the program they would definitely go just to enjoy Smetana actually chose quite a colorful program. and Dvorak’s compositions. Bach’s Cantata no. 34 or known as “O ewigesFeuer, or Ursprung der Liebe” is one famous church cantata that was first premiered in 1746. Perhaps of all Mid Year Concert 2013 – Medieval & “heavenly music”, this cantata makes one Renaissance Choral Music great example. It’s been a busy couple of weeks for Liam Gallagher by the sounds of it. On the one hand, tantalizing old school Oasis fans with talk of a Gallagher reunion, while on the other responding to criticism that his current project Beady Eye ‘isn’t like Oasis’ by eloquently telling those same fans to “fark off”. Ever the contrary littlebrat, it’s a wonder he’s able to maintain that swagger with the (largely self-imposed) Noel-shaped chip on his shoulder weighing him down something that’s been there since that fateful day in 2009 when it all went one backstage punchup too far and Oasis were no more. Whereas Noel seems to have risen above the whole affair, in Liam’s eyes at least, the animosity has only intensified of late - big bro’s High Flying Birds continuing to soar comfortably above his own band in terms of critical reception and fan response. Despite flippantly stating that he “doesn’t want to be seen as a serious musician” to music rag NME last week, it’s painfully obvious that Liam feels he has a lot to prove on the follow up to 2011’s Different Gear, Still Speeding – penultimate track “Don’t Brother Me” not even pretending to disguise the bitterness still harboured; “Don’t bother me when you’re done/Sick of all your lying, skimming and your crying”. So what to expect of BE? The ‘new direction’ cliché has been mentioned more than once, and according to Liam; “We’ve experimented or whatever” - which is Gallagher code for a little more White Album plagiarism than last time, and a few psychedelic effects thrown in by New York-based producerof-the-moment Dave Sitek for good measure. There are moments of genuine originality - “Second Bite of the Apple” and opening tour de force “Flick of the Finger” shine particularly bright, as does album closer “Shine a Light”, all of which give a glimpse of what Liam is capable of when he stops acting like a dickhead for five minutes. However with one or two exceptions (“Soul Love”, “Iz Right”) the bulk of BE is at best predictable, and at worst just plain lazy. The one saving grace is that nobody would expect more from the man who could probably count the number of actual Oasis classics he’s penned on one hand. Realistically, BE is little more than a passable interlude while we all wait for the inevitable Oasis reunion, but that’s a few years down the track so meanwhile there’s nothing for it but to watch this tiresome game of sibling rivalry play out. Your move Noel… Dan Ashcroft

A Despicable Hero, the World War against Zombies, and the School of Scaring

by: pande

Summer is the right time to watch blockbuster movies. These three films might be just what you are looking for. First, we have Gru and his yellow troops back to save the day, next we have another zombie-action movie with Brad Pitt, and last but not least a long awaited prequel, Monsters University. See for yourself at your local DVD shop or www.21cineplex.com!

Despicable Me 2 Animation, Comedy, Family, Adventure. Director: Pierre Coffin, Chris Renaud. Writer: Ken Daurio (screenplay), Cinco Paul (screenplay). Cast: Steve Carell, Russell Brand, Kristen Wiig, Benjamin Bratt, Steve Coogan.

The superdad, Gru (Steve Carell) is assembling his minions to save the world once again. A few of his minions are kidnapped by yet another villain called Eduardo (Benjamin Bratt). Gru is asked for help by the Anti-Villain League’s leader, Silas Ramsbottom (Steve Coogan) to capture Eduardo. Gru has evolved in this sequel and is no longer portrayed as a villain and has turned over a new leaf and his three adopted daughters (Margo, Edith and Agnes), have grown up with Dr Nefario’s assistance. Expect quirky humor and minions... which pretty much make the movie.

World War Z Action, Drama, Horror. Director: Marc Forster. Writer: Matthew Michael Carnahan (screenplay), Drew Goddard (screenplay), Damon Lindelof (screenplay), Matthew Michael Carnahan (screen story), J. Michael Straczynski (screen story), Max Brooks (novel). Cast: Brad Pitt, Mireille Enos, James Badge Dale.

The film follows a United Nations employee Gerry Lane (Brad Pitt) who is in the front lines of the global zombie war that is set to consume the world. Based on the bestselling novel, World War Z was produced by Pitt and had numerous production problems with a few directors reportedly leaving the set. But who cares, the previews look amazing and although zombie films are at critical mass right now, you know this is going to be a fun movie to watch. Because lets face it, apocalyptic zombie movies are most definitely an enjoyable way to spend a couple hours.

Monsters University Animation, Adventure, Comedy. Director: Dan Scanlon. Writer: Robert L. Baird (screenplay and story), Daniel Gerson (screenplay and story), Dan Scanlon (screenplay and story). Cast: Billy Crystal, John Goodman, Steve Buscemi.

The prequel to the critically acclaimed Monsters Inc is finally upon us and this time the characters are in university. That’s right, before a monster can get a job scaring children in order to interdimensionally scare children for their power, they have to get a degree in it. Enter Mike and Sulley who are achivers at Monster University where an intense rivalry will lead to comedy gold. This is a Pixar film, so expect it to be an awesome show for all ages.

At least two noses were needed to meet the challenge and, Oliver Cresp and Annick Menardo (Firmenich) rose to it. The result? A generous, sensual, yet electric perfume, full of panache and surprises that tips the classic codes of men’s perfume “ass over tea kettle”. And yet, as always respectful of tradition, it is from haute perfumery that he borrows precious raw materials. These great classic are overturned and don’t know which way to look: cedar explodes, patchouli sheds its dampness, vetiver plays on it’s roots like a tribal echo. They exhale masculinity. W

hen I first found out in December 2012 that that Net-A-Porter finally started stocking items crafted from the imagination of the indefatigable Biyan Wanaatmadja, I squealed out of sheer excitement. Almost immediately, small pockets of very dedicated new fans started to quietly rally around the work of the German-educated designer, who they lauded for his delicate and ornately embellished outfits–and just in time too, as Biyan recently celebrated his thirty years as a venerated professional in the fashion industry through The Radiance Postcard, a characteristically artful, noholds-barred show at Hotel Mulia. The bespectacled designer was flanked by Nadya Hutagalung and a representative of the Indonesia Heart Foundation. At the press conference, he expressed his gratefulness for having had the opportunity to work so long for an art form in an industry he loved so much. Humble and speaking in a hushed voice, he thanked members of the media for continuously supporting him throughout the years. “I want to continue celebrating the beauty of Indonesian women,” he smiles. Although his items are already stocked on the racks of celebrated department stores such as Bergdorf Goodman, Club 21, and Saks Fifth Avenue Dubai, their availability on Net-A-Porter exposes Biyan’s clothing to an entirely new internet-savvy market. When asked if he alters his designs to suit the needs of these ever-growing foreign interests and markets, he shakes his head.

54

www.beatmag.com

“I make no changes. The only change is that I have to work harder,” he replies with a chuckle. Another reporter asks how he keep things fresh and whether his inspiration has started to want after thirty years of creating. He mulls it over for a while before answering, “I try to understand the customer and imagine myself in the customer’s shoes. I imagine myself as the woman I want to dress.” He then turns to muse and MC, Nadya Hutagalung, before jokingly adding, “I’ve always wanted to be a beautiful woman, so I just imagine myself as Nadya.” The show took place at Hotel Mulia’s Grand Ballroom, and the room was packed to the rafters with Jakarta’s fashion glitterati. Nadya was an absolute vision and took center stage in a characteristically Biyan gown: airy, exquisite, dreamlike. The Radiance Postcard collection was an exemplar sampling of Biyan’s thirty-year span in the industry. Everything he is famous for was laid out on the table in the usual quietly grandiose manner: suspended over the rafters and looming over the catwalk were two massive wooden eagles. The dark wooden floor paneling added to the romantic, gothic mood of the evening. The first set of outfits that rolled out were beautiful sheer, multi-layered white separates. I wanted to post more pictures of that set to show you just how good Biyan is at making stiff silhouettes appear flowy by playing with the right materials, but

STYLE

unfortunately the lighting onstage was not conducive to photography. Despite our best efforts, most photos came out whitewashed, so for now you’ll just have to imagine derivatives of outfits similar to the following: The color palate then turned a little warmer after that, with pairings of azure and tan separates. The variation in textures also made it a feast for the eyes: perhaps the most discriminating tell-tale marker of Biyan’s work is his deftness with embellishments, but the the silk dresses and skirts with traditional Indonesian prints are also a reminder of his understanding of the way fabrics fall on a woman’s body. Combinations of different materials and traditional, conservative silhouettes resulted in looks that had an air of quiet strength about them. Things then took a darker turn, as far as color palate goes. Materials also became simpler and silhouettes more practical, but this spartan turn of events is hardly a complaint. The mid-length wrap skirts are a great show of wearable utilitarianism, which is always a really pleasing thing to see in couture catwalks.

I think the tail end of the show was my favorite: I loved the combination of elaborate floral lace and jewel blue tones, which reminded me of antiquated Chinese plates. The embellishments also returned in full force, but he did such a wonderful job of making a dress sparkly and girly without making it delicate or frail. Biyan is basically a master at channeling the dreamy feel of a fairy tale where the princess is also the swashbuckling knight in shining armor! While this collection didn’t bring anything new to the table, The Radiance Postcard catwalk show was, at the very least, a lavish testament to Biyan’s talents. Even after thirty years of creating, he has not lost the touch that made his work so desirable to women. His presence in the Indonesian fashion scene has given us something to be really proud, so here’s to thirty more years of celebrating women and fashion as tough as tempered glass!

Alleira Batik realizes that Toraja has not received the exposure it deserves and used this collection to spark interest through their beautiful tenun motives. All batik fabrics in this collection are comprised of tenun Toraja motifs and designs. Anisa Asmaya Sanin, the production director of Alleira Batik, pointed out the large motifs in tenun Toraja: “Torajans are proud of their illustrations and their houses,” she said. The color hues are not far from earth tones. You will see browns (dark and light), as well as bold colors, such as yellow, orange, red, blue, even purple and black. Alleira Batik always combines traditional and modern elements in the collection, and you can also see the trademark touches such as the classic H-line skirt, pipe pants, and chic silhouettes. And even though the collection is dominated by women’s clothing, that does not mean Alleira Batik has nothing to offer to men. One portion of the show where I could not stop myself from smiling was during the kids’ collection. TODAY’S OUTFIT:

A DRESS FOR ALL OCCASIONS (by DesZell)

Y

ou know what I hate about online shopping? It can easily turn my “let’s shop for ONE dress” plan into a full-blown shopping spree. Because by the time you put what you want to buy into the cart, you’re faced with other recommendations that are just too appealing for you not to click them. It’s actually not pure hatred from my part: the only thing I hate about it is how I have to part with my money. I’m actually quite fond with online shopping, especially with so many reasonably-priced items out there. I don’t have to pay for parking and I can still find a steal. Like this dress that I bought the other day...along with the necklace, and shoes. *sigh*.

I’m wearing my new dress with a pair of flats that I also bought from Berrybenka. I originally only wanted to buy the dress, but seeing how I’ve been into flats lately, I thought it wouldn’t hurt to add them into the cart, and the color scheme perfectly complemented each other. It was a pretty cold morning so I added the scarf, which together with the flats seemed to tone down the business-like look of the dress.

Switching my flats with my beloved Missoni heels and adding a Zavi’s Micha necklace that I also purchased from Berrybenka for IDR 90,000! I think it’s easy to dress up this kind of well-tailored dress. All you need to do is grab a clutch and throw in some nice accessories.

SPLURGING ON L’OCCITANE ROSE AURORE RADIANT BODY MILK (by grisselda)

A

pplying a body lotion is a very relaxing and important thing to do every day. Our skin needs moisture and hydration to stay healthy, and it’s our job to apply body lotion regularly. Although I’m not overly picky about body lotions, I have two criteria before picking one: a lovely scent and a light texture. If a body lotion scores those two points, I will love it. As long as texture isn’t greasy, and the scent fresh or sweet without being too strong, welcome to my desk!

As the name suggests, the rose scent is clearly the dominant tone in the fragrance: it smells and feels so fresh and calming at the same time. The fresh scent actually lingered on skin for long hours. I usually use L’Occitane Rose Aurore right after I take a bath, because adding it to clean skin is much better. I have normal skin, so the light texture moisturizes it nicely. I can’t tell whether this product will be enough for those of you with very dry skin, but I can say that the enriching rosehip seed oil allows skin retain hydration for hours. This is the perfect texture for me, light but not overly runny or heavy. As for the radiant claim goes, I didn’t notice a drastic change, but I am happy with the scent and the texture.

A body lotion (or body milk) that I’ve been using since last month is L’Occitane Rose Aurore Radiant Body Milk. L’Occitane usually releases a new collection with a variation of products that results in a complete set of (at the very minimum) hand creams, body lotions, soaps, and perfumes; we’ll often find even more products for some special collections. L’Occitane has also been known for their lovely scents: what I’ve also found is how their scents are subtle and long-lasting. The staying power and the formulation are also great, so I hoped for a good result from this product.

A 250ml bottle of L’Occitane Rose Aurore Body Milk retails for Rp375k, and a 75ml travel-sized bottle is also available at Rp135k. I personally wouldn’t splurge this much for a body lotion because, as some of you probably know, I prefer to spend that amount of money for makeup. But I definitely see why some people spend that much on this body milk! Having supple-soft skin from the nourishing properties of a body lotion combined with the fresh lovely scent of a fragrance is very desirable.

ndonesian designer Mel Ahyar took part in the Audi Fashion Nation Opening Night, and she did not hold anything back in a collection that consisted entirely of dresses. As I watched her collection go down the runway, I had a hard time trying to figure out the common theme that held them together: there was no single print, colour scheme, or fabric that repeated itself often enough to suggest a common thread, and I was very interested to learn what Mel had to say about it. After the show, I wrested her away from other curious reporters and managed to interview her for a few short minutes. I found her to be very pleasant, patiently answering every query in my line of rapidfire questioning assault. It turns out that Mel was inspired to put together a collection inspired by movies nominated at the 2012 Academy Awards. Now everything made sense! The variation in materials and silhouettes was reflective of the varying genres of films that received nominations at the Oscars. What resulted was an eclectic collection that saw feathers and silks share a runway with beads and metals.

…and body-hugging numbers that looked as if they had been painted on the models.

When I asked Mel for the inspiration behind the veiled feathery pink number (made out of laser-cut material), she told me that it was inspired by 2012 Academy Award Best Picture winner Argo, which is set during the 1979 Iran hostage crisis. She says that clashing interpretations of Islam and unification of state and religion in the Iranian government have always made for a sensitive issue, and she wanted to contrast that by making a dress that had light, feminine elements to it. Mel’s collection turned out to be a runaway success, receiving the most energetic applause from the crowd that evening. I’m looking forward to see where else Mel will turn to for inspiration in the future!

It combines a chic designer interior with strippeddown industrial dĂŠcor. But improving on that, it also has a wonderful patio area with an upscale beach club vibe (complete with a tiki bar) that provides a respite from the hustle and bustle of city life. Since opening in March 2011, this place has established a real following of regulars comprised of the beautiful crowd. The inviting ambiance and spot-on service makes this a good option for a hot date or get-together with friends and family. An open kitchen provides the welcome as you step inside. And the wood-fire oven tells you that great pizzas are waiting for you to share with your company. But other than Italian favorites, the kitchen also does superb Japanese dishes, with a twist or two.

FOOD We started with the Anticuchos Izakaya (55k); grilled marinated beef with spices and chili, served with roasted potato. It’s a nice twist on yakitori. We also loved the Scallop Ceviche (55k); a Peruvian-inspired dish of scallops marinated with yuzu and lime, served with spicy cilantro salsa on top, over crispy potato chips.

The all-you-can-eat fare is priced at 278k (kids at half price), and available from 11am to 3pm. From homemade jam and bread to pastas and barbecue favorites from the grill, there’s no better way to spend your Sunday lunchtime and afternoon. (Budi Iskandar)

As for dessert, the Profiterole (50k) is a perfect pick; profiteroles with whipped cream and decadently rich Valhrona dark chocolate glaze. Oh, how sweet it is! The drink concoctions here are also drawing hordes of Jakarta’s beautiful set. The Italian Margarita (90k) is an Italian take on an old Mexican favorite; Sauza hornitos shaken with Campari and fresh lime juice, rock candy syrup, served with homemade sea salt “air” and Campari dust. The Ocha & Bella Negroni Special (90k) is well, very special; gin, sweet vermouth, and Campari, topped with homemade grapefruit soda. This might be our new favorite tipple in town! And true to the Tiki bar tradition, try the Tikini drink called the 1944 Mai Tai (85k); a special blend of rum, orange curaçao, oregat syrup, rock candy syrup, freshly pressed lime juice, fresh pineapple juice, and orange bitters, served in a tiki glass. All that’s missing is the sea breeze, but it’s a pleasant drink to enjoy anywhere, so why not in the middle of the city? Publico Bar & Grill feels like a trip down memory lane to the wonderful jazz era of 1920’s New York. The décor of the Ryst Group establishment features an airy retro-chic interior, with red brick walls and warm wooden floor juxtaposing nicely with classic black-andwhite tiles. During the day, the restaurant is bright and welcoming, but come night time, it turns into a groovy spot with sensual, dim lighting. A cool interior is one thing, but what about the food? In a word: excellent! On our visit, we began with the scrumptious 24-Hour Marinated Chicken Wings (45k); grilled in a charcoal grill oven, served with spicy smoked paprika and mint aioli. We also ordered the “Mulberry and Spring” (35k); prawn, scallop and herbs wonton served with sweet chili sauce. A nice take of the old Manhattan Chinatown favorite.

The expert mixologists behind the impressive bar at Publico have whipped up a drink menu with many of the classic, handmade libations of a bygone era, as well as a few modern creations using the best seasonal ingredients and liquor available. The use of dry ice adds a certain dramatic effect to many of the cocktails here. Try the Mango Cabana (100k); a mix of gold rum, Cointreau, mango puree, lemon juice, bitters, mango caviar pearls. Or the classic Old Fashioned (100k); a blend of bourbon, caramelized sugar, orange bitters, with maraschino cherry.

For a flavorsome mix of East and West, the Duck Aglio Olio (70k) is a great choice. The homemade Sambal Matah relish gives a good amount of kick on this pasta dish! The Crispy Soy Glazed Black Cod (75k) is another noteworthy dish; pan seared black cod glazed with sticky soy sauce.
