Pick up The Beat Jakarta in selected nightlife venues around Jakarta, Starbucks and selected Circle K, Starmart, Hero stores. A full list of venues and distribution pionts is on beatmag.com

There just seems to be so many new venues and restaurants opening up around Jakarta nowadays. It’s hard to keep up with them as every time you turn around there is another opening up. As the population here achieves more spending power, especially with the increase of the minimum wage recently and the knock on effect of that, people are out dining and partying like never before. Each new venue continues pushing the limits, including a stylish new Japanese restaurant opening last week in the Senayan golf park and the new trendy bars and restaurants that can be found from Kemang to Kota and everywhere between. These are exciting times and this is an exciting place to be, but the pressure is on to get it right at all times and as every new place arrives, another less fortunate location exits through the back door. It’s tough out there and we take off our collective hats to those who give it a go. Speaking of which, we will be making a few changes to this magazine to suit the local landscape and after this edition, The Beat Jakarta will become a monthly publication. We want to bring it up a level and make it into a more stylish production while still supplying the information you need to guide you through the nightlife and more of this city. A new app that we are developing and the new website that is just about ready to be rolled out will also help you find your way around. Look out for the new Beat at the beginning of March. In the next couple of weeks though, a lot of music is coming our way with visiting, and recently re-united band, Stone Roses playing at Senayan Lapangan. Anyone who saw lead singer Ian Brown’s shows a couple of years ago will surely be back for more. The big event is the weekend after next though with the Java Jazz Festival starting next Friday and going for three nights. We also have another installment of the Beat Sunset Party and BBQ for your Sunday afternoon pleasure at Epicentrum’s Liquid Exchange this weekend. All the details are inside.

effrey Sutorius started DJing back in 1995 in his home town of The Hague, Holland. In 2007 he teamed up with other producers, Eelke Kalberg and Sebastiaan Molijn to form the trance collective, Dash Berlin. They have had major hits all over the world since then including their breakthrough single “Till the Sky Falls Down” and have won many international awards. In 2010, Dash Berlin was nominated for the Best European DJ at the International Dance Music Awards and entered the DJ Mag Top 100 poll at number 15.They are now sitting at number 7. Without doubt, Dash Berlin

is one of the biggest dance music acts doing the rounds and we had the chance to sit down for a chat with Jeffrey before the show last week at Illigals. Did you ever think in the record store you were working in as a young man that you would make it this far in dance music? No, not really. I wasn’t aiming for it. It just happened spontaneously in the record shop where I made friends who were making music and I started making music with them. I was already a DJ at that time though.

What‘s behind the name Dash Berlin, where did it come from? It came from the Love Parade in Berlin back when I played there in 2000. I remember vividly, it was a beautiful day with one million people following all the trucks in the center of Berlin playing all forms of dance music; techno, house, progressive and everybody was having a great time, dancing, listening to the music, making new friends. I climbed up a light pole and had a fantastic view over Berlin and I thought to myself, okay, I want to do something with Berlin in my DJ name and so later I started searching in Google two word combinations with Berlin and typed in Dash Berlin and nothing came up and I thought that’s really catchy, I’ll take that.

023

f e a t u r e

When did that first begin? It skyrocketed after we first released “Till the Sky Falls Down” and Armin van Buuren began supporting it everywhere which was the starting point for Dash Berlin. Everybody’s like “Who’s Dash Berlin and who made this song?” And at that point we were already working on new music and remixes and we created our own label with Armada called Aropa Records and now that’s where I make all my new singles and support new talent.

It always seems to be you on stage as Dash Berlin. What happened to the other two guys? I am Dash Berlin. We make music together as a team. They don’t really like to be in the spotlight. They are just great studio wizards and I still learn so much with them every time we get in the studio, even though I have a really hectic touring schedule right now. I finish off the projects in the studio with them and we do a lot over the internet which is so easy nowadays. I like to travel, I like to DJ, I’m the man in the spot. What was the best show for you over the past year? I would have to say that the‘A State of Trance’ (ASOT) shows have always made a big impact on me. They are true highlights of the year in the way they are listened to by millions of people around the world in both attending the parties and online. Besides that there are so many great parties to choose from, I’m such a happy camper. I’m so fortunate to get the opportunity to play shows like Electric Zoo in New York, or in Russia in some crazy locations, or Stereosonic in Australia. It’s a great time to be a DJ. Are they all huge shows? It varies. For me personally, it’s not important if the show is big or small. It’s all about the atmosphere and the crowd, that’s where I get my inspiration from. Would there be more atmosphere in a small or big gig?

www.beatmag.com

Is the lifestyle now what you imagined it to back then? As I said I never planned anything or imagined myself sitting down here talking to you or flying around the world, making music and performing in front of thousands of people. It’s something I never imagined at all.

f e a t u r e

024

In a small venue the atmosphere seems to be more touchable. The crowd is standing right in front of you and they can almost touch you. On the other hand, when you are playing a huge venue with an enormous crowd and they are all waving together and it’s going up and down, and everybody is focussed on the music, that’s great too. So that’s why I would never make a comparison between the two. Speaking of the crowds and DJs playing to the crowd, do you change your repertoire as you go thru a set to suit them? Yes, my base will always be Dash Berlin, my own productions, my own remixes and my own Dash-ups, my name for mash-ups. I will always do that because I get so many requests from people to play those tracks. In the end I play for the people, and I’m there to entertain the people. I’m not there for myself, being cool and wanting to show how good a music selector I am. I’m there for the crowd. Besides that, I always have a lot of new unreleased material I try to put in my sets. What do you think is the most important thing about being a good DJ? I think it’s always important to work with the crowd. I think for every DJ it’s also important to play from your heart. It’s important and everyone can see it. That’s the best advice I can give anyone. What is the best definition of your music? What would you call it? An emotive uplifting painting.

www.beatmag.com

Music like yours and Armin van Buuren’s for example features a lot of classical music in the mix. How do you think this came about? Do you guys listen to a lot of classical music? I can’t talk for Armin. I know he has done classic reworks and played with orchestras. I’ve never done that. As far as Dash Berlin goes with classical influences, that’s just a coincidence maybe. I think trance as a genre of music is able to hold a lot of emotion in the sounds. It’s really difficult to say why trance is so good for that but I think it’s because of the melody and it has enough space to build in something emotive which is also similar in classical compositions. You work with a lot of female singers. Which one do you think fits best with what you are doing? Well, it’s not what I think but what the crowd thinks and we’ve had a lot of great feedback to all the vocalists we have worked with. A lot of people wanted to know who the voice was behind “Till the Sky Falls Down” and “Janeiro”, which

was Vera and nobody really knows her. She was a big influence on Dash Berlin when we started. Besides her we also receive a lot of feedback working with Emma Hewitt, who’s incredibly talented and great to work with but let me say for the record, every female or male vocalist that we have worked with I totally admire and really look up to! (smiles) Who writes your tracks and the lyrics etc? That depends. We don’t really have a working schedule. Sometimes we start off with a beat and we try to fit something around it, a vocal or sound. Other times we have something written and we have to work around that, or we have a melody part that we have to build a beat around. So there’s not any specific work strategy in creating our music. So how about the lyrics, do you write them or someone else? That depends too. Sometimes we write them or the vocalist, or sometimes we find them somewhere. There’s no fixed way we do it. Who are some upcoming vocal trance DJ producers to look out for? In these parts I would say LTN. There’s also a talented producer coming from Russia called Alexander Popov. There are lot of guys from Russia who are extremely talented. I signed a girl/guy duo recently called Rave Channel. Arty is another producer doing really well. There is just so much talent out there, I can only name a few but there are so many. How many times have you been to Jakarta before? Have you had a chance to look around or go out? This is my fifth time now. Sometimes we get the chance to drive around and check bits of it out. This time I’ve spent a few days in Bali before coming up here. We had the opportunity to get around and went to an orphanage that we’ve been supporting for quite some time now. Great times hanging out with these kids and it makes me feel humble that I can be of any support. What’s coming up this year for Dash Berlin? Quite a lot. We are working on a lot of new material but I can’t say much about names and collaborations just yet but I will be trying some of those tonight and I’m really looking forward to see what the reaction is from the crowd. I also have the whole A State of Trance 600 caravan coming up which will be going to many parts of the world including Den Bosch in my home country where I haven’t played since three years ago.

Frekuensi Perangkap Tikus (Mousetrap Frequency) is not exactly a new album but this compilation, released on December 9th, 2012, is one of those masterpieces that needs to be acknowledged, respected, celebrated and shouldn’t ever, under any circumstances, be relegated to the list of albums currently being consumed by the bowels of your iTunes never play playlist. Each song is equal in infectious excellence, each featured artists is as intellectually badass as the next, and the theme behind the compilation is, and has always been, an uber sexy topic, the ultimate headline in Indonesia: fighting corruption.

Mari bersama merayakan optimisme Indonesia bebas korupsi dengan turut mengunduh Frekuensi Perangkap Tikus. Ajak serta pula keluarga, orang dekat, sejawat, kolega kerja, mereka yang masih percaya bahwa Nusantara masih memiliki harapan menjadi negara gemah ripah bebas rasuah. Berani jujur?

Go ahead, put your hand where your mouse is and take a step toward creating a corruptionfree Indonesia, complete with good-corporategovernance by downloading “Mafia Hukum” (Navicula), “Kings and Barbarians” (Sajama Cut), “Kami Bosan Jadi Negara Dunia Ketiga” (Morfem), “Mimpi Basah Pembangkang Sipil” (Eyefeel Six feat. Morgue Vanguard) and all those other playlist-worthy Frekuensi Perangkap Tikus tracks today. We dare you.

First initiated by one of the very few die-hard and uncompromising anti-graft groups, Indonesia Corruption Watch, the entire record—this is the best part—is available as a free download at beranijujur. net. The reason? To get you actively supporting the cause. So to get yourself this epic album, you’re going to have to get yourself on the activism bandwagon and commit to at least one good cause before collecting the free songs (click the “agree” button to support the anti-corruption movement, and so forth). In fact, while you’re at it go be a good little human and tell your daddy, your momma, your little sisters and brothers to get clicking too.

he Goods Dept is one of the pioneers of the curated department store concept and continues to expand its business. It started with an idea from local brands and has grown to a place where entrepreneurial spirits can sell their works. After opening at Plaza Indonesia (now closed), and then at Pacific Place, The Goods Dept has now opened its newest store at Pondok Indah Mall 2, which is also their flagship store in Jakarta. The store itself is the biggest with two floors, it also has The Goods Cafe (sipping coffee after shopping sounds great, right?) and the store has large sections for each category. So if you’re looking for denim, The Goods Dept has its own space for them and they’re displayed almost perfectly. Same thing goes with section’s for women, men, kids, shoes, sunglasses, etc.

www.beatmag.com

The Goods Dept offers a wide range of ready-to-wear clothes and accessories. It can be a one stop shop for almost everything that you need. They really considered the location and customer demographics at PIM 2, which you’ll find out once you step in there. I think this store caters to young people as well as youthful parents. This flagship store also has kid’s corner, not to mention, a unique homeware, camera and gadget corner too. For those of you who can’t visit The Goods Dept Flagship Store at PIM 2, you can still buy their stuff at their webstore. If you’re interested in visiting The Goods Dept Flagship Store, go to PIM 2, Level 3, located near the food court.

here’s a new lipstick in town and apparently its Rossa’s, the singer who is currently on the judges panel on Indonesia’s X Factor, favourite! Ooooh, curious of what it is?

It’s none other than Oriflame, a Swedish cosmetics brand that has been in Indonesia for a long time and is loved by many women. They’re launching a new lipstick called Power Shine Satin Lipstick, which will give you that shiny and flawless lipstick application. The texture is very soft. Created with powder core technology embedded in the lipstick which adds shine to the satiny finish’s colour. Unlike other lipsticks of the same finish, this one is long lasting and easily applied but doesn’t easily bleed out. It’s available in eight colours. You know what? Rossa is also the new brand ambassador from Oriflame for their skin care, makeup, fragrance, body care and accessories line. So you’re going to a see a lot of Rossa with Oriflame. And as it happens, Oriflame is also sponsoring X Factor, which makes the ties between the two even closer.

Another product that is being launched recently from Oriflame and also intrigues me is the Optimals Matte Touch Face Blotting Tissues. Should get one of these!

ver heard the conspiracy theory about how Paul McCartney actually died in 1966 in a car accident and was replaced by a looky-likey called Bill? No? Google it. Meanwhile, I have a better one, where the Fab Four got all fed up with LSD, free love, the 60s and Yoko Ono, and so had themselves cryogenically frozen and posted to ohhh, let’s say, West Aus, only to thaw out in 2010 and rename themselves something suitably avant-garde like, err, ‘Friendly Antelope’, maybe…? Ok, fine, that is admittedly a load of obtuse twaddle, but there’s no denying that if the Beatles were still all around today, they’d probably sound a lot like the Perth quintet Tame Impala. “Project leader” and, apparently, the one who does everything, Kevin Parker possesses the voice of John Lennon reincarnate, and appears to be half musical savant, half David St. Hubbins – having written, recorded and played every note all on his lonesome, only wheeling out the rest of the band when they have to do a live show. Wonder how long it took to come up with that title, Kev-o? The Impala’s 2010 official debut Innerspeaker was a bolt out of the blue, an unexpected but welcome notch on the bedpost for the buzzing music scene of this remote WA city, and it’s good to see that none of the creativity or verve has been lost on album numero two. Psychedelic hyperventilate-a-thon “Be Above It” sets the otherworldly tone, numbers like “Music to Walk Home By” and “Mind Mischief” sizzle like a sleazy Sunday afternoon in a hippified Hyde Park, and “Elephant” sounds like Black Sabbath doing the theme song to Airwolf. But the real genius here lies in the fine line that Parker has trodden, trying to ‘nail’ psychedelica – at once giving a tip of the cap to The Floyd, Sgt. Pepper et al, but also taking the futuristic, ultramodern sounds of the late 60s (now stored firmly in the ‘retro effects box’) and make it all sound fresh and vital again. As far as 60s revivals go, “Lonerism” is damn near perfect - somebody get this man some more medication. Dan Ashcroft

The Sound of

Spring By Erza S.T.

T

hough it is still snowing in most parts of Europe and other northern countries, we are slowly moving towards springtime. It is time to see all the beautiful flowers back to their glorious color, while the birds are happily singing again. Well, perhaps not in Jakarta, but it is definitely on my mind and the right music is indeed needed to accompany such imagination. Its time to visit Aula Simfonia Jakarta for their monthly concert, where spring is on the program.

www.beatmag.com

Jakarta Simfonia under Rebecca Tong and Dr. Jahja Ling as the conductors will bring us to the realm of springtime with the opening music of a famous ballet composition called “Coppelia” by Leo Delibes. This world-renowned comic ballet was originally choreographed by Arthur Saint-Leon to the music of Leo Delibes with a libretto by Charles Nuitter. With the “Prelude et Mazurka” composition, Delibes is bringing us to the world of Dr. Coppelius – an inventor who has made a life-size dancing doll named Coppelia. It is so lifelike that Franz, a village swain, becomes infatuated with it and sets aside his true heart’s desire, Swanhilde. She shows him folly by dressing as the doll, pretending to make it come to life and ultimately saving him from an untimely end at the hands of the inventor. From the cheerful melodies of Delibes’ Mazurka, we continue to a rather serious composition

for two pianos and an orchestra in D minor by Francis Poulenc. The concerto’s recurring perpetual motion, modally inflected figurations are clearly inspired by Poulenc’s encounter with a Balinese gamelan at the 1931 Exposition Coloniale de Paris. Often described as the last work of Poulenc’s early period, this concerto also combines influences from Maurice Chevalier with Mozart. It has a Bali touch with a jazzy feel and romantic inspirations in the middle part giving it quite a refreshing mood. Pianist Jessie Chang and Dr. Jahja Ling will be in the spotlight as the pianists who perform this piece. Jakarta Simfonia Orchestra decided to choose Antonin Dvorak’s Symphony No. 8 to conclude their spring concert. Though this symphony might not be as popular as his 9th Symphony (From The New World), the 8th is actually cheery and draws its inspiration more from the Bohemian folk music that Dvorak loved. Its duration is only about 36 minutes, making this symphony and its four movements one of Dvorak’s shorter symphonies. In conclusion, I have to say this is quite a great selection to create a bright and airy feeling in the springtime. Kudos for Aula Simfonia Jakarta and Jakarta Simfonia Orchestra, who finally can present us with a more refreshing program outside their usual comfort zone.

Spring Concert 23 February 2013 starting from 19.30 onwards Aula Simfonia Jakarta For more information: +6221-6586 7808 or boxoffice@aulasimfoniajakarta.com

Reminiscing about the past year and making efforts to be a better person might be everyone’s wish. Here are tales related to that. The first is about a CIA agent on a mission to track down Usamah bin Laden, next is about a pilot who is trying to cope with his alcoholism, last is a tale of a man who becomes a bounty hunter to get his wife out of slavery. See for yourself at www.blitzmegaplex.com and www.21cineplex.com!

Django Unchained Adventure, Drama, Western. Director: Quentin Tarantino. Writer: Quentin Tarantino. Cast: Jamie Foxx, Christoph Waltz, Leonardo DiCaprio, Kerry Washington, Samuel L. Jakson, Walton Goggins, Dennis Christopher, James Remar, Don Johnson. Dibantu oleh seorang pemburu bayaran, Dr. King Schultz (Christoph Waltz, Inglourious Basterds), mereka berdua berhasil menemukan tempat tinggal milik seorang juragan perkebunan Calvin J. Candie (Leonardo DiCaprio, The Departed, Inception) dimana Broomhilda menjadi budak. This film takes place before the Civil War when slavery in southern United States was rampant. Django Freeman (Jamie Foxx, Ray), a slave, is trying to find his wife, Broomhilda von Shaft (Kerry Washington) with the help of a bounty hunter, Dr King Schultz (Christoph Waltz, Inglourious Basterds). Calvin J. Candie (Leonardo DiCaprio, The Departed, Inception), a sadistic slaveholder is revealed to be the one who owns Broomhilda. This movie directed by Quentin Tarantino, is just like Inglourious Basterds in terms of its depiction over the top action sequence together with sharp dialogue that Tarantino film’s are known for. Expect heave use of the “n word” along with tense scenes and dry humour.

Flight Drama. Director: Robert Zemeckis. Writer: John Gatins. Cast: Denzel Washington, Don Cheadle, Melissa Leo, Kelly Reilly, John Goodman, Bruce Greenwood.

This film tells about a pilot named ‘Whip’ (Denzel Washington, Training Day) who is a heavy alcoholic who is involved in a plane crash that kills six out of 102 people on board. Despite heroically saving an uncontrollable aircraft, a toxicology screening shows he was intoxicated during the flight and the resulting struggles really give this film an edge. Many critics have praised the film as a character study of a man who tries to cope with his demons. The first 20 minutes of this movie alone is worth a movie ticket and Washington’s stellar performance earned him an Oscar nod from the Academy. Expect to see strong character development in this high powered drama.

Zero Dark Thirty Drama, History, Thriller. Director: Kathryn Bigelow. Writer: Mark Boal. Cast: Jessica Chastain, Jason Clarke, Joel Edgerton, Chris Pratt. This movie depicts the chronicles of an eleven-year manhunt (2001-2012) from the perspective of a female CIA agent, Maya (Jessica Chastain, The Help), who is obsessed with tracking down Osama bin Laden. In response to the September 11 attacks, CIA agents were deployed to Pakistan. Maya was one of them. Many film critics commented that this movie is one of the most realistic portrayals of the hunt for Usamah bin Laden leading to the covert SEAL team mission that ultimately ended his life. This film clinched 58 awards out of 120 nominations for various accolades given by many film critic societies and associations. Kathryn Bigelow of Hurt Locker fame directed the film and was given unprecedented cooperation with both the US military and the CIA so expect lucid authenticity throughout the film along with good character development.

KETJIL

KITCHEN Ketjil Kitchen Jl. Gandaria I no. 75, Kebayoran Baru, Jakarta Selatan Ph.: (021) 722 2051 Twitter: @ketjilkitchen Facebook: ketjilkitchen

Opening hours: Mon – Thu: 10 am – 10 pm Fri: 10 am – 11 pm Sat: 7 am – 11 pm Sun: 7 am – 10 pm

Relocating to a new site, this ‘ketjil’ place is now bigger and better!

O

riginally situated in the SCBD area near Jalan Sudirman, Ketjil Kitchen was a pretty popular place to eat, especially for the office workers around the area. But a few months back they had to relocate due to the construction of a new building at the same site. Disappointed but undeterred, they searched for a new place for the eatery. And found one they did. The new Ketjil Kitchen is now located on Jalan Gandaria, roughly halfway between Blok M and Mayestik shopping areas. At the old location, Ketjil Kitchen was a cute and small restaurant with a retro, homey feel. It was small enough for patrons to order from the menu blackboard behind the counter, and then take it at the pick up counter when it was ready. Well, now that the restaurant is much bigger, you can simply wait for your meal at your table.

www.beatmag.com

The big setting doesn’t negate the restaurant's signature cozy ambiance. Old-school decorations are abundant; from paintings to vinyl records to television and radio sets, as they all add to the unique feel. There’s also a mix of vintage-looking furniture, which kind off takes you to the good old days. It’s like you’re revisiting your cool aunt or uncle’s home.

We visited the restaurant during a recent sizable early evening rain storm because we wanted to take shelter at somewhere homey and comfortable, while waiting for the crazy traffic to subside. And the delicious food is a major plus, too.

We started with the Cordon Bleu Ball (28k); a smaller, appetizer version of the original favorite: breaded cutlets of chicken and smoked beef, with tasty mushroom sauce, shaped into little balls. Next up, came two delectable dishes. The Spaghetti Aglio Olio Tuna Picante (42k); a mouth-watering mix of garlic, olive oil, and chili peppers, with pesto sauce and a generous helping of tuna, and the Dory Cheese Arrabbiata (64k). Arrabbiata is a sauce made from garlic, tomatoes, and red chili peppers, cooked in olive oil. Arrabbiato actually means angry in Italian, and most likely it’s due to the heat of the chili peppers. The dory fish is lightly breaded, and combined with some cheese. Instead of the usual pasta, the fish is placed on a bed of rosemary baby potatoes, and smothered with the red sauce. The amount of kick in both of these sauces is just right without overpowering the taste. There’s always Tabasco (or sambal) if you feel like it. And one thing that is the definite crowd favorite here is the Yummy Mommy Lasagna (47k); simply one of the best tasting lasagnas in town! There are also a good number of rice items like the Nasi Goreng dishes here. Try the hearty Oxtail Soup (69k) or Tom Yam Soup (55k); always reliable.

As for drinks, the Green Elixir (35k); a healthy juice made with bok choy or Chinese cabbage and pineapple, and the Sunset Naijeeland (30k); fruity tea infused with mango juice and orange juice, will surely refresh you. On the weekends, Ketjil Kitchen is open early, and already it’s proven to be a popular spot for breakfast/brunch. See you there? (Budi Iskandar)

An order of Churros (30k) became our dessert for the evening. The fried dough pastry was done just right, and ably accompanied with a tasty chocolate dip.

A little taste of Britain in Bintaro? Jolly good, that!

Thames Fish & Chips

Jl. Bintaro Utama V Blok EA 15 no. 18, Bintaro, Tangerang Ph.: (021) 735 9801 Opening hours: 10 am – 10 pm Twitter: @THAMESfishchips Facebook: Thames Fishandchips

The suburb of Bintaro has become a popular place to live for many Jakartans in the last decade or so. With the rise in population in the area, more and more commercial outlets are popping up offering convenience for residents. And this goes for eateries as well. You will never run out of dining options here.Well, maybe not fine dining restaurants, but there are more than enough choices of low to mid price eateries around this neighborhood.

www.beatmag.com

Thames Fish & Chips is one of the more recent additions to Bintaro. Opened just about a month ago, this little restaurant is trying to bring a bit of British taste to Bintaro. The eatery occupies two levels; the first floor is where the kitchen is, with a smaller dining room. There’s also patio seating should you feel like dining al fresco. The upstairs has a bigger dining area, complete with a terrace overlooking the street. We like the little details of Britain that they decorated the place with. There are plenty of knick knacks of Big Ben, London taxis, double decker buses, and figurines of Bobbies, adding to the British flavor. Classic books by British authors from Brontë to Tolkien to Agatha Christie and beyond are presented for your perusal. As for the food, the main thing here is of course, the fish and chips. But we’ll get to that later. Most of the items on the menu here are in the deep fried variety. Let’s start with the small bites.

f o o d

049

There’s the Fish Fingers (20k); fried breaded dory fish, the Cheese Fritters (25k) of mozzarella cheese, Onion Rings (15k), or for a bit of a twist, go for the Curry Rolls (20k); diced chicken breast, carrot, onion, sautéed with curry paste, and wrapped in spring roll skin to get you started. But as the name suggested, the Fish and Chips (50k for jumbo size, and 40k for medium) is their signature dish. The batter is nice and crunchy, while the snowy dory flesh is deliciously moist. The hand cut chips/fries are a nice touch, and the availability of Malt Vinegar bottle on your table adds authenticity. Yes, we strongly suggest a few dashes of the malt vinegar to perk up the taste of your fish and chips!

Other notable items here are the Cottage Pie (30k); with minced beef filling, and the lamb-based Shepherd’s Pie (30k). Both are accompanied with tasty gravy. If you’re more into pasta, try the Fresca Seafood Marinara (40k) or the Country Chicken Carbonara (40k). You can choose from three types of pastas: spaghetti, fettuccine, and penne. Desserts like the Knickerbocker Glory (25k); ice cream, fresh fruits, honeycomb, nuts, syrup, and whipped cream, and the Sticky Toffee Pudding (25k) will definitely satisfy your sweet cravings. And as for drinks, may we suggest the very refreshing Yellow Submarine (20k), a blend of peach, passion fruit, and orange squash.

www.beatmag.com

There’s also a good number of dipping sauces Thames Fish & Chips is a solid addition to what for your dish for extra flavors: curry, basil pesto, Bintaro has to offer. tomato, barbeque, sweet and sour, cream cheese, (Budi Iskandar) butter, and tartar mayonnaise. We liked the first three ones the best. Extra servings of Chips (15k for jumbo size, 10k for medium) or Potato Wedges (15k) will probably be needed to sample these delicious dips.

The Best Electric Knife Sharpener

www.beatmag.com

This electric k n i f e sharpener earned The Best rating from the Hammacher Schlemmer Institute because it produced the sharpest, most resilient edges. Knife blades were dulled by running them along cement blocks 100 times prior to testing. The Best model ground edges that chopped spaghetti squash with little effort and sliced smoothly through sheets of paper, unlike lesser sharpeners that created edges that required great force to penetrate squash and cut paper into ragged pieces. The Best model sharpened serrated knives that cut easily through cardboard, far superior to lesser models that could not sharpen any toothed blades. The Best model uses 100% diamond abrasives and stropping discs to grind and polish an edge and restore its original sharpness in only 10 seconds. Elastomeric guides ensure knives are kept at the proper angle for optimal sharpening. The Best model has a built-in magnet that catches knife blade shavings for easy cleanup and it was one of the quietest models. www.hammacher.com $219.95

This is the ballpoint pen that laser-scans documents as easily as it scribes notes. A highprecision auto-focus lens and 5-megapixel sensor built into the pen scans letters, recipes, or important documents as crisp, clear 2048 x 1536 pixel images. Pressing the shutter button halfway projects a visible red laser frame onto a document, and the pen automatically focuses the image just before the picture is taken. The device has 1 GB of built-in flash memory that holds up to 1,000 scanned pictures in JPEG format and the pen also captures voice memos in WAV format with the integrated microphone. Twisting the pen apart reveals a USB plug that downloads scanned images to a computer. Made from anodized aluminum, the pen switches from writing to scanning mode with a turn of a dial. Captures up to 300 images after a one-hour charge via USB. Compatible with Mac OSX, Windows 8, 7, Vista, and XP. www.hammacher.com $124.95

The Odor and VOC Eliminating Air Purifier This is the air purifier that uses patented filter technology to remove odors and airborne volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The nanoscale material in the filter, if laid flat, would have the surface area of two badminton courts, helping it capture more than 99% of micronsized organic particles in a room. The purifier breaks down molecules that carry odor or bear VOCs, the toxic airborne chemicals emitted b y many common household synthetics such as carpets, varnishes, and cleaning agents. A numeric display indicates the level of VOCs present and continues to count down as the air purifier removes them; a colored LED provides an indicator of air quality at a glance. The WilloMD is the new, easy-touse bio-computer with Sensorpeutic technology that targets joint pain. The result of decades of medical research and development, it’s FDA cleared and has been found to be significantly effective in relieving joint pain. How it works. WilloMD uses smart sensors to collect and transmit data from the skin surface to it’s central processor. Then, it formulates and delivers a dynamic digital prescription of infrared energies back through the skin surface to the joint. This reduces pain signals to the brain and opens restricted pathways to the joint. It’s completely safe, doesn’t hurt, and you may even feel a mild pleasant sensation and warmth as the pain begins to melt away. If you suffer from joint stiffness or pain, just place the unit directly on the skin surface where you feel the pain for a 25 minute treatment and it’s safe to use as often as you wish. Then, return it to the charging unit after each use. It’s that easy. Regular use encourages cumulative benefits, so even once you feel better, you can continue to use it to maintain your joint health. www.firststreetonline.com $599.00

This Pocket Socket Portable Hand Generator ensures you are never in that situation again. It features one two-prong U.S. standard electric outlet that with the help of your hand will power up your electronics in all of those emergency situations. www.thinkgeek.com $59.99

City state A photographic journey with Martin Brown

www.beatmag.com

A

rtist Martin Brown depicts the world’s most ‘Kickin’ cities, exploring how traditions and old school values are continually expressed and survive in modern urban centers. In this Jakarta exhibition the artist has put out five years worth of work in cities like New Delhi, New York, Paris, Berlin, Bangkok, London and of course Jakarta. What’s unique about this exhibition is that open prints are available for purchase and a third of each sale will be split between two charities. One is the Sayap Ibu Cabang Orphanage, founded in 2005. The orphanage takes care of 35 children

Feb 21 – March 12 2013

and oversee the care of 310 children living with their families. Donations will cover the cost of care, food, toys and future expansion. Another awesome charity project that Martin Brown is supporting is the Indonesian Heritage society who works to preserve and promote Indonesian culture and heritage, through talks, tours, screenings and events. City State is not the first “art with a cause” exhibitions in Jakarta, but its definitely one you want to be a part of. Come out and learn this city’s state. Luxeliving showroom, Jl. They Eat Horses, Don’t They? What foods are wrong to eat?

A

scandal currently raging in the UK and parts of Europe is forcing people to address the issue of food taboos. It’s something that also crops up in Indonesia, every now and then. In the UK, it’s about what kind of meat should be regarded as acceptable for human consumption. What started as a story about horse meat being detected in ultra-cheap “beefburgers” has escalated into a major crisis of confidence in the British food industry: Processed frozen foods labelled as “beef” have been found to contain up to 100 percent horse meat as a substitute. The extent of the problem is emerging as investigations continue. It appears that there has been either incompetence in the monitoring and regulation of the UK processed food industry or an eastern European criminal conspiracy has systematically been passing off horse meat as beef: The market price of the former is much lower, so a hefty (but unlawful) profit can be made. This means there are two issues that the British public are now grappling with: gross deception – either intentional or accidental – in the labelling of food (a matter for the government to address), and whether or not it is OK to eat horsemeat (a matter of personal conscience).

www.beatmag.com

Over many centuries, the British developed a strong bond with certain domesticated animals, like dogs, cats and horses, and eating them became taboo. In contrast, horse meat is still regarded a s

something of a delicacy in parts of continental Europe like Italy, France and even Switzerland. For a meat eater who enjoys beef, goat, lamb, chicken or duck, there is no objective reason why they should not eat horse either, provided the meat is free of drugs that are sometimes used to treat horses and can, in rare cases, have an impact on humans. The reality, though, is that religious or cultural attitudes often intervene. In Indonesia as in the West, inadequate monitoring or the motivation to make a “quick buck” often lies behind food scams. Pork consumption is haram (forbidden) for Muslims, and problems sometimes arise when pork or its derivatives are suspected of entering into the food chain via the preparation of processed foods. While the consumption of dog meat sometimes does occur (generally well beyond Java), it is perceived more as an aspect of local cultural attitudes than the breaking of a taboo. More frequently, the issue that causes much greater concern is the appearance of banned chemical additives or ingredients in prepared foods – like preservatives in bakso (meatballs) or lurid colouring designed to render food or drinks more visually attractive, particularly to children. The foodstuffs are often sold by itinerant vendors at kaki lima (mobile) foodstalls, which makes effective monitoring well-nigh impossible. The most worrying cases of food contamination, recently, have involved the use of methanol either as a substitute or additive in alcholic drinks. While it does make drinkers feel tipsy more quickly, methanol is industrial alcohol (used as antifreeze in motor vehicle cooling systems, for example) and is highly poisonous if consumed, even in relatively small quantities. Some unwary foreigners and locals who drank methanol lost their lives recently. With cases of methanol poisoning making the headlines in Bali and Lombok, the Bali governor has already pledged to tighten up the monitoring and control of alcoholic beverages sold at drinking establishments on the island. For the average consumer – that’s you and me – the moral of these tales seems to be, wherever you are, if food or beverages are unusually cheap, beware, for they may well contain substitutes that might be harmful. It all adds a topical nuance to the saying, “There’s no such thing as a free lunch.” (Jim Read)
