As the year comes to a close and Christmas is fast upon us again, it’s time to take a moment to reflect on the past year and basically count our blessings for making it through to bigger and better things than ever before. Generally, it was a good year for most as the economy stabilised and grew at a rate of knots taking most people with it to a higher plane. Entertainment-wise, there were tons of new restaurants and venues opening up around town with mixed results and international acts coming in from all over the globe to entertain the masses. One notable exception was the Queen of Pop, Lady Gaga who ran into an ugly wall of ignorance from some parties, but hopefully people have learned from that experience and a similar occurrence will not happen again. To round off another interesting year, The Beat is holding another party this week and you are all welcome to join the fun. It will be held at Umbra in Kemang this Friday night from 9.30pm with one of the best live acts in town, Jethro, performing their suave and sophisticated set followed by a stunning fashion show from stylish La Bella by Benita and street savvy Green Rock menswear. After that all hell breaks loose with guest DJ Lee Getts getting behind the wheel to drive the sounds into a night of unadulterated revelry. Should be fun. Be there early and you may get some drinks, but if nothing else, you are guaranteed good times. Check inside for all the details of the coming events over the next weeks. Merry Christmas to you all.

Bloc party This Indie rock, post punk revival and post-Britpop outfit from London was formed in 1999. But the name Bloc Party didn’t come about until 2003. The members are Kele Okereke (vocals,rhythm), Russell Lissack (guitar), Gordon Moakes (bass), dan Matt tong (drums). In 2005 the band released their debut album Silent Alarm that was awarded the Indie Album of The Year at the Plug Awards and NME. By 2012 their fourth album came out, aptly titled Four. Fans of Bloc Party here will have the chance to see them performing live in Senayan Indoor Tennis arena on March 20, 2013
The Christmas City at Central Park After the success three years in a row in celebrating the Christmas and New Year events in 2009, 2010, and 2011, as well as presenting a very tall Christmas tree with LED lights, this year Central Park Mall will hold a series of spectacular event called “The Joy of Golden Christmas” from December 18 to January 6. The musical LED Christmas tree show can be enjoyed every day, while also having the end-of-year shopping program that will be started from December 14 to 16 in the theme “Beyond Shopping Marathon till Midnight”. Your year-end holiday will be more exciting with the lineup of fireworks and laser shows on December 14, 25, and January 1.
Simak Dialog SimakDialog was a project formed by Riza Arshadi (piano) along with Ari Ayunir (drums) in 1993. Afterwards, the other musicians joined in to the group, such as Tohpati Ario (guitar), Adhitya (bass), Endang Ramdan (kendang), Erlan Suwardana, and Cucu Kurnia. The group offers such a different sound and composition, like a mix between western, Javanese and Sundanese ethnic music. On Friday December 21, SimakDialog will appear in a Festival Music program held by Gedung Kesenian Jakarta at 8pm.

Magical Festivities Hotel Indonesia Kempinski will give some special offers to celebrate Christmas and New Year’s. The first 100 guests staying in the hotel will receive limited stock Luki Luwak dolls. Senayan Fair 2012 Senayan Fair is a year-end exhibition event that showcases numerous products and activities that represent the Jakarta lifestyle as well as a number of other exciting programs. The event will take place in Parkir Timur Gelora Bung Karno, Senayan from December 25, through January 1. The event will also see performances by Alexa, Pee Wee Gaskin, Last Child, /rif, Superglad, Steven Jam. Other attractions that will be featured during the event include a fashion show, programs from various community groups, campus music, a year-end party, fireworks, a discount party and more. Senayan Fair will be a great option to spend and celebrate your Christmas and New Year holiday.
Christmas and New Year at Grand Hyatt Hotel This December the Grand Hyatt Jakarta opens its doors to guests for a memorable Christmas and New Year’s celebrations. The festivity will start with the Meet Santa & the Christmas Children’s Choir program on December 24 at 7pm and on December 25 at 12pm in the Grand Lobby featuring Elfa’s Children Choir. To spread the Christmas joy from 6pm, Santa will go around all of the restaurants in the hotel to give away Christmas presents for children and on Christmas day at 12pm. The New Year welcoming party will be held at the Grand Lobby area at 9pm where Elfa’s Singers will launch the celebration with their signature performance. Up next is Bjorn Again, an ABBA tribute band who will perform hit songs from ABBA going into the New Year countdown at the Grand Lobby.
A British alternative rock band, The Stone Roses, is one of the most influenced Britpop bands and just announced their reunification officially on October 18. They will be ready to make a reunion tour of the world for their fans after almost more than ten years on hiatus. The band that was formed in Manchester in 1983 became one of the pioneering groups in the “Madchester” movement in the late 80s era. Consisting of Ian Brown (who was recently here solo), John Squire, Gary “Mani” Mounfield, and Alan “Reni”Wren, The stone Roses released their first album in 1989 with hits songs like “Elephant Stone”, “I Wanna be Adored”, “She Bangs the Drums”, and “Made of Stone”. Next year, the band will appear at Lapangan D Senayan, Jakarta on February 23.

Rein memulai karirnya sebagai DJ pada tahun 2009. Berbagai jenis dance music dipelajarinya demi meningkatkan kualitas dirinya, hingga akhirnya mahir memainkan berbagai langgam mulai dari RnB, Hip Hop, hingga Progressive. Rein yang tak pernah berhenti belajar tak jarang pula menimba ilmu dari rekan rekan DJ lainnya. Seperti para DJ lain yang bergabung dengan pihak manajemen, Rein pun memlih Dinero’$ DJ Management sebagai tempatnya bernaung. Bersama dengan mereka, beragam tawaran dan tampil di berbagai klab pun sudah dijalani. Klab yang pernah disambanginya adalah Public, Centro, Vertigo, Second Floor, Cleos, Embrio, Venue, Tipsy, Space Bar, Luv’s Bar & Dine, red Square, X2, Tribeca, Stadium, Immigrant, dan sebagai semi resident di Brew House. Rein started his DJ career in 2009 while learning different styles in dance music in order to improve his skills. He became proficient at many genres, from R&B, hip hop to progressive. He also learned the trade from his fellow DJs and like other DJs, he opted to join a talent management company and settled with Dinero’$ DJ management. From then on he received loads of offers for club gigs. He has performed at Public, Centro, Vertigo, Second Floor, Cleos, Embrio, Venue, Tipsy, Space Bar, Luv’s Bar & Dine, red Square, X2, Tribeca, Stadium, Immigrant, and a semi residency at the Brew House.

Wizznu merupakan seorang anak yang lahir di keluarga yang mencintai musik sejak dini. Semasa kecilnya, instrumen Piano dan Keyboard sudah seperti mainan baginya, dan sejak mendalami musik, dia memenangi beberapa kompetisi. Musikalitasnya pula yang akhirnya membuahkan hasil lagi, yaitu dientuknya sebuah sekolah pada tahun 2001 yang kemudian berkembang pesat. Pada tahun 2007, Wizznu merubah haluan dengan menjadi seorang DJ yang kemudian banyak tampil di negara sendiri hingga klab di Cina dan Malaysia. Wizznu sudah pernah tampil di klab Jakarta seperti Musro, X2, Venue, Tipsy, Triple Nine, Apollo, dan juga beberapa klub di kota besar lainnya pun sudah pernah disambanginya, seperti Boshe VVIP Club Jogjakarta, Blowfish Surabaya, Amnesia Bandung, X1 Bogor, Lips Bogor, dan X3 Medan. Wizznu was born in a family who loved music. When he was a child, he mastered the piano and keyboards, and also won several music competitions. His musicality encouraged him to build his own school which developed rapidly in 2001. In 2007, Wizznu decided to be a DJ and cosequently went on to appear in many clubs, in Indonesia, China and Malaysia. What’s your bustle right now? According to the sources, you are preparing a tour in Indonesia. Is it true?
Yes, you are right, I am busy in preparing the Indonesia tour 2012 with the theme “Sound of Stadium” Bobby Suryadi Indonesia tour 2012 (Audio Visual DJ Set).
Can you explain about the tour in detail and what cities you will visit?
Actually, this tour should have been held in 2007 altogether with the CD promo called PutraChoice Part #1 and Stadium Essential, but it has not been able to be implemented until now. The tour can be done this year but with different musical or visual concept. The original music of Sound of Stadium has its own character that is mixed with my own ideas, such as the audio visual DJ set, it is an exploration and a mix between audio and visual which becomes harmony. The cities I will be visiting are Palu, Surabaya, Manado, Pekanbaru, Bogor, and others before I end it back in Jakarta.
Are there any DJs or any performances you will be inviting onto the tour?
Since this is a single tour, there will be some DJs who will act as the opening performances.
Will there be another gimmick? Will you perform any differently to usual on the tour?
No other gimmicks, DJ Bobby will appear as usual with full consistency and long hair.
Are there any activities you are working on right now, besides as a DJ and preparing for the tour?
I still keep producing, deepening the technology, and exploring dance music, you know it is still related with the DJ stuff. Because I think that firstly I must stay focused in one aspect to be a professional DJ.
This year is finishing soon, what have been your highlights throughout 2012? And what plans will you do for next year?
I guess, the highlight right now is the audio visual DJ set I use, since nobody uses it in Indonesia but me. However, it doesn’t mean that it takes over the VJ’s role, yet it will be cooler if it is combined with the cooperation with the VJs too. The plan’s for next year are being prepared for an experiment in one of our gadgets. So, just wait for it.
Last but not least, according to you, what will the Jakarta dance scene look like for next year?
I think, the Jakarta dance scene or wherever it is will be more developed if the DJs become more professional too. In fact, recently a lot of organizers influenced the dance scene in Indonesia, and I hope they are able to develop the dance scene more in our country, and especially in Jakarta. www.beatmag.com

So much has happened, all so quickly ...
Anyway, I’ve taken another look at some of the stories I covered over the past year to see what happened to some of the issues involved. In March, I observed that Indonesia was one of the few nations that had still not signed up to the World Health Organization’s Framework Convention on Tobacco Control. Just recently, Australia implemented very strict controls on cigarette packaging, whereby branding images are all but removed and replaced by harrowing photos of the harm that cigarettes can do to your health. It’s ironic, though, that many Australians, who form one of the largest groups of overseas visitors to Bali, are able to enjoy a double benefit: For those who smoke, cigarettes in Indonesia are absurdly cheap compared with their cost back home while the strength of the Aussie dollar against the rupiah merely accentuates the cost advantage. And they can smoke just about anywhere. The unexpected passing of singer Whitney Houston in February prompted me to focus on the early demise of both Michael Jackson and Amy Winehouse. Time stops for no one, and Adele has now replaced Winehouse as the great British soul singer. Her position as the new no. 1 was cemented in October when she was chosen to perform the theme song in Skyfall, the latest (and arguably the best) of the 23-film James Bond series. The disco remix is now going down a storm with clubbers everywhere. One way in which the Bond franchise has maintained its supremacy in films of this genre is its decision always to select someone at their career peak to perform the theme song. Who can forget Shirley Bassey’s rendition of Goldfinger, released originally way back in 1964?
From time to time, I looked at what was happening in the US presidential election campaign. Barack Obama has since been reelected US president against all the odds, at least as far as they seemed at the beginning of this year. In winning a second term against the backdrop of a seriously weakened US economy, he has done what no candidate had achieved before, apart from Franklin Roosevelt in the 1930s when times were very different. Much closer to home, there was another election. Joko (“Jokowi”) Widodo was chosen as the new governor of the capital, showing that the Jakartans’ appetite for change trumped the appeal that Fauzi Bowo, the incumbent perceived as a more pro-establishment figure, might have had. Jokowi’s task in trying to make Jakarta more livable is enormous. In focusing on the debacle that led to Lady Gaga’s non-appearance here, I came to the conclusion that the smallmindedness that caused the cancellation of her gigs was precisely an example of the kind of attitude that prevents Jakarta from becoming a world-class city. While Jokowi is unlikely to be focussed on rock stars (controversial or otherwise) the twin problems of traffic congestion and the city’s vulnerability to flooding will take up much of his attention as he strives to confront these most urgent issues. Quite simply, he has to deal with a legacy of failure by previous administrations over many decades that now falls to him: Unlike Singapore, Kuala Lumpur or Bangkok, Jakarta ducked the tough investment and construction questions that should have been taken way back in the 1980s and 90s. The quagmire that now exists (quite literally, after heavy rain!), will be the most intractable and defining challenge of Jokowi’s time in office. One can but wish him all the best as he attempts to address it. (Jim Read)

When did you start to get into fashion? What makes you interested in the fashion world? What’s the story behind the name of your fashion line?
I’ve been into fashion since I was in senior high school. It was my mom’s influence actually because she likes fashion too. She likes to design her own clothes and she got me to think about what I wanted also (for my occasional dress) or sometimes she designed for me and my sister. Then, after I graduated from high school, I was modeling but not for a long time then my mom said to me why don’t I use my talent in design as a business. Then I was thinking why not? I see a piece of cloth as an art to complete a woman’s beauty and to strengthen their sexiness, that’s why it was La Bella (the beautiful one) before I named it La Bella Private Collections.
When did you start your fashion line and how do you promote it?
The end of 2008, but I had the idea a year before. I promote with Facebook, Blackberry, socialization, fashion shows and personal contact while preparing to launch a new website.
Who or what is your inspiration in designing clothes?
I love Versace’s design, that’s my inspiration, very elegant but still sexy. All women are sexy but they are sexy in their own way.
What is your signature style?
Most of my designs are backless because I think the back of woman is the sexiest part that you can show and I custom make for every customer based on their measurement and body shape.
What’s your future goals as a fashion designer?
My dream is to dress as many women as possible and make them feel more beautiful through my designs. And in order to do that, I’m planning to have couple of boutique stores throughout Indonesia and eventually abroad.

adil El Ghoul, better known as DJ R3HAB, has taken the dance music world by storm over the past 18 months. He won the prestigious Best Breakthrough Artist Award at this year’s Miami Winter Music Conference which catapulted him into worldwide dance music stardom and he happened to be playing a set of his Chainsaw Madness at Immigrant on a busy Saturday night a couple of weeks ago. That’s where the beat caught up for a quick chat and to find out more about the latest happening kid on the block.
T.B.: Where are you from and how old are you? R3HAB: I’m from Amsterdam, Holland and I’m 26 years old, already.

What kind of music were you listening to when you were growing up? I think it was just all round music, you know? Holland is a pretty dance music influenced country so there was a lot of that.
What were your biggest influences back then? There are a lot of DJs in Holland. At first it was just about the parties and you want to play something that works. So in the beginning you just want to entertain the people. That was more important at then than who was my favourite DJ. It wasn’t till I was about 17 or 18 when I started thinking this guy or that sounded really cool.
What was the first dance track you liked? I really liked The Prodigy when I was young. A couple of tracks like “No Good” and “Outer Space” where they used high voices and pitched up, you know. How did you first get into DJing? I think I went out to a party, a teenage party, when I was young and there was a DJ playing and I’m like, I think I could do this a little better. He seemed to be selecting the wrong
What are your influences now? I think with all the Dutch DJs you have like Tiesto, Armin, Laiback Luke. There are just so many. You get influenced by certain eras in dance music. You have something really energetic for a while then something really vocal, it’s all influenced by the seasons. And if a new DJ comes along, that brings a fresh sound.
You travel around the world a lot, what venue or city do you like playing best? I like Miami, Las Vegas, New York, L.A., the four big party cities in America. They just go crazy, Las Vegas especially. What about Ibiza? Ibiza’s great, but it’s a seasonal thing while a place like Miami goes all year long. Your music is described as chainsaw madness, what exactly does that mean and is it an evolving sound? Ha. It’s a sound sometimes like firing up a chainsaw and it sort of started as a joke and stuck. There are moments it sounds like a chainsaw, you know? Broom broom.. What genre of dance music do you like partying to most? Just the energy. I don’t see it as a genre, it’s all music and I just like it with a lot of energy. I like variation and if you play the same rhythm the whole night, it gets boring. Do you party much in your spare time? No, actually I don’t. In my spare time I like to relax and watch a movie. There’s not a lot of spare time. Like this week we have one day off and that’s Monday. Last Saturday and Sunday I was in America, then Monday and Tuesday I was in Europe, Wednesday off, then flew to Hong Kong on Wednesday night and Singapore last night and tonight in Jakarta. Tomorrow Mumbai and then Monday off. So in my spare time I just try to relax. What’s the name R3HAb mean or where did it come from? I thought it was a cool metaphor for partying, alcohol, getting wasted, having fun and it kinda stuck. So you were partying some time? Of course, when I play I party. I party hard behind the decks and with the crowd on most nights.
What’s the worse? Missing a gig. Like once I played in the Dominican Republic and three flights got cancelled in a row and I waited there all day and then missed the next gig.

But you are still the new generation, right? Yeah, but I mean, new kids 16 or 17 year olds are already making amazing music and they just have to develop their style so we’re just waiting for the new stuff coming out from them.
What’s the most interesting thing about being a DJ? I think it’s the reaction of the crowd. I’ve played so many big festivals, like thousands and thousands of people, like this (showing a crowd shot on his iPhone from the week before). This was in California and Americans they do it really big and there’s always a lot of people.
How much time do you spend listening to music every day? Wow, that’s a lot. Maybe seven or eight hours every day. How much time do you spend in the studio? Well the studio starts on the laptop. You can do everything on the laptop and then you go to the studio so it’s like five or six hours a day. You have remixed a lot of tracks from pop stars like Lady Gaga, Enrique Iglesias, Madonna, Pitbull etc. Do you spend much time with them doing that or is it just you putting it together on your own? No, not really, it’s always different depending on who. I spent a lot of time with Enrique but then Gaga just uses the internet. It depends, but they have to approve it and the track is official. So are you doing it for them or for yourself? It’s like both ways. You always want to do something for yourself and they ask you to do a remix and you want to be part of it. This is your first time in Jakarta. What do you think of the place? Hot. No, it’s cool and Indonesia is definitely a place I want to come back again on vacation. So where will you be at Christmas and New Years? At Christmas I will be in Stockholm and New Years I’ll be at New York and Philadelphia. Two cities with a helicopter back and forth during the night. So you won the Breakthrough Artist award at the Miami Winter Music Conference. How did that feel? Good. Like icing on the cake after a busy year, and they give you a crown for it. So that was nice.

Are those new influences affecting your music now? We sort of influenced things last year, you know? When we went to America it was something new and fresh and I think that we also influenced the next generation and now we’re always looking for the new generation to bring the new sounds.

What music are you into at the moment? I actually don’t really listen to any particular album these days. At the moment I’m intensely working on songs for my project ESQI:EF (Syaharani & Queenfireworks). But mind you, a bit of Chris Botti, Diane Schuur, Johnny Nash, Amy Winehouse and Adele are always nice for rainy seasons. Some tunes by Sting, Paul Giamatti, Christopher Cross, Paul Weller, also help to get me back on my feet, straighten me up and ready for the world. What was the first record you bought? Any interesting story behind it? Wait, let me tell you about the first record I heard (that I’m gettin’ jiggly wit’) was Osibisa Live. I stole that record from my older brother. I couldn’t help myself from falling in love with Osibisa’s “Sunshine Day”: Everybodeeee do what you’re dooooing, smile while bringing a sunshine day… I was only eight years old at the time. .

The first record I bought? Unyil. It was an epic moment for a 9 year old to own that record. Ah, those days were so fun… What are your all-time favourite albums? Why? All time favourite albums: anything by The Carpenters. So soulful, filled with self esteem and beautiful harmony. I also love 007 songs. Each and every song of 007 is so damn cool! I have the ultimate respect for Charlie Parker’s, Billie Holiday’s, Astrud Gilberto’s, and Macy Grey’s work as well. …Oh, god, help me. I can’t make up my mind. There are so many good songs and albums in this world. I’m sure that I haven’t heard them all. Music, like, mimic nature. Always brings surprises.
What was the worst record you ever purchased? Worst record? Hard for me to say. Maybe some records with poor mixing/mastering results. Who do you want to be, other than yourself, next time you reincarnate? Well, I don’t really believe (or care) about reincarnation, sixth senses, whatever. I don’t get the logic. But anyway, if I could choose, I just want to be me. Only slimmer, please. What book are you reading now and what’s the score (1-10)? Plato and a Platypus Walk Into a Bar by Thomas Cathcart & Daniel Klein. I laugh a lot reading this and think a lot afterward. What new movie should people see? Why? I’m pretty much hooked on the Bourne series, Lord of the Rings series, A Separation (an Iranian drama film). I especially like complicated mind themes, attention to detail and that kind of thing. I think it’s cool. It makes you put things in perspective, see life with more empathy. What music do you choose to start your weekend? To start my weekend: rock ‘n’ roll comes first! And then jazz, plus a little bit of blues. And song/album you choose to end your weekend? Song to close my weekend, I would usually go mellow with “Wild Wood” by Paul Weller. Also my own song “Delight” which always is effective for strengthening my faith in love; the world is truly a beautiful place when we are falling in love.
Syaharani seems to be forever on tour, playing mostly intimate club gigs and a few medium to massive concerts. She has been using her break time to write new songs for her next album.

I’m not trying to justify this one, but seriously and honestly, my current mascara is drying out. The age of mascara is short, indeed! That’s why I need the new one. Christmas With The Swingles By Erza S.T.
The Swingle Singers are an international renowned A Cappella phenomenon that was formed in 1962 in Paris, France by Ward Swingle with Anne Germain, Jeanette Baucomont, Jean Cussac and others. The group has survived for almost 50 years and has had many singers in the past including Christine Legrand (the sister of famous composer Michel Legrand) as the group’s lead soprano since 1972. In 1973, the original group disbanded and Ward Swingle moved to London and recruited all new members who debuted as Swingle II. The group later performed and recorded under the name The Swingles, then The New Swingle Singers, before eventually settling with a simpler name, The Swingle Singers. Since then, the group has never disbanded and now, with its current seven members, they deliver versatile sounds in folk ballads, funk jams and fugues with equal precision and passion. In the past the group has recorded albums like Jazz Sebastien Bach, The Swingle Singers Going Baroque, Anyone for Mozart, Rococo A Go Go and
many more that has led them to win five Grammy Awards and a many Grammy nominations. The Swingle Singers actually began as session singers mainly doing background vocals for singers such as Charles Aznavour and Edith Piaf. It was after they sang through Bach’s “WellTempered Klavier” as a sight reading exercise and found the music to have a natural swing. The group now consists of seven voices: two sopranos (Joanna Goldsmith – Eteson and Sara Brimer), one alto (Clare Wheeler), two tenors (Oliver Griffiths and Christopher Jay), one baritone (Kevin Fox) and one bass (Edward Randell). As part of their 50th year anniversary tour, The Swingles are coming to town and to sing you some Christmas tunes this coming December 23 at Aula Simfonia. It is a world-class entertainment indeed and make sure you are not missing it.

There is nothing better to enjoy the month of December than with some Christmas tunes to warm up this rainy season. One of the voices that will bring Christmas joy and goodness soon to Jakarta is none other then The Swingle Singers.

Wonderful Wow Worthy Worthless Worm Fodder
O
ccupying a space somewhere between daydreaming and shoegazing, the spectral dream pop of Beach House sees the achingly cool duo of Baltimore native Alex Scally and the French born Victoria Legrand further cementing their indie darling credentials on album number four. Like a shinier, more euphoric version of The XX, the distinctly Nico-ish Legrand whispers ambiguous vocals over Scally’s lush guitar and keyboard driven lullabies, flitting around each other like forlorn confetti in a breeze but never quite looking each other in the eye. Described by Legrand as an “abstraction of many feelings”, Bloom has that ethereal quality that is very much in vogue at the moment amongst music fans who like their music cool, and their emotional outpourings ambiguous. So far so good, but when then the gravitational pull of Beach House’s own weightlessness finally catches up about halfway through and sucks the album into a black hole of blurry repetition, the whole thing veers alarmingly into forgettable dirge territory. Worse, the Arctic chilliness of the album’s veneer means that getting under the skin of it is an effort in itself.
That’s not to say Bloom is boring; Scally’s guitar twinkles like bokeh fairground lights on “Myth”, the glittering “Lazuli” keeps the heart screws firmly tightened, and the anthemic “Wishes” unfolds with a solid guitar hook and booming drums that highlights the tension between the cinematic widescreen soundscapes vs. emotional introspection that underpins the album. Kinda like strolling around on an Icelandic glacier with a blindfold and a pair of thick earmuffs on after being dumped. Crack through the ice though, and there are plenty of beautiful moments to be had, the only problem is they may not leave much of a lasting impression. Dan Ashcroft

he Dutch embassy has yet again gone with an exhibition that not only is artistic but also useful and innovative. Our relationship with nature (food, health, energy, space, time) and economic value has taken a turn for the worst in the last few years and this is because, we as human being, have been messing with universal balances severely.
This exhibition is produced by the Netherlands Architecture Institute and details how architecture is able to result in a more sustainable future in developing cities and communities. This exhibition also showcases the involvement and the important role the Dutch are playing in this fight. akarta’s dull city walls were finally given a much needed facelift with the boys and girls from Jerin, who hit the streets of Jalan Blora with their spray cans and artistic inspirations. The event saw a duet of German and Indonesian artists making the street walls a canvas and turning it into a piece of beauty, adding a lot of good vibes to the area. The famous Indonesian graffiti artists Darbotz, Wormo, Tutu, Nsane5, Fine Dimension, Kims, Older +, Koma Indo, Bujangan Urban and Name Two worked on a project together with the German Artists Bond, Zebster, Sirius Mo and Steak. There was also a bit of the old oriental feeling as a famous Hong Kong based street artist rocked up and jazzed up the city too. What was great about this event was that passersby and people from all over were welcomed to try their hand at graffiti art, with the artists doubling up as teachers spreading the value and drive behind an artist’s work. There was a lot of excited faces and the area did look a lot more better at the end of this six-day event. Well done Jerin Jakarta.

The rich flavors of Indonesian spices come together delightfully at this Senopati eatery.
R
empah-Rempah is a restaurant with an entire menu based on traditional family recipes that have been kept and perfected for generations by a family with a passion for Indonesian food and spices. It all started in 1945, when a mother from South Tapanuli, an area in North Sumatra, started trying out and perfecting traditional Indonesian recipes that have been in her family for generations. Twenty years later in 1965, she started teaching these recipes to her daughter. This mother and daughter duo then started a catering business in 1975 and their clients at that time mostly came from governmental agencies. Following suggestions from her family after decades of service, the daughter set up this restaurant in 2003. Rempah-Rempah (which means spices in Indonesian), is a tribute to Indonesia’s rich original spices that are used in all its dishes. My life coach and gossip consultant Clarissa and I chose this restaurant for our lunch destination on one of those all-too-rare slow midweek days

An old phone here, a couple of irons there, and there’s even a typical rice grinder from a village. Pictures of Indonesian national heroes decorate the wall, along with a poster explaining the many spices commonly used in traditional cooking. There’s also a corner filled with old school candies, chocolates, and snacks, which transported us to our childhood!

Enough about the place, let’s get into the food! Some Bitter Ballen (22k) started us off nicely. These beef-filled wheat balls are probably more Dutch than Indonesian, but hey, after 350 years in Indonesia, I guess there are some good things that they left behind.
We really loved the Ayam Goreng Bumbu Rempah (49k).The fried chicken is covered with some kefir lime and curry leaves, with some special Indonesian spices. This is one highly recommended dish.

Charity begins here
They say the source of happiness is being connected and making others happy.
As
we slide into December and the festive season, my calendar reveals more than one charity event. From the AIDS benefit to lunches in aid of orphans and disabled kids, seems like this is the season of giving. So it seems this could be the happiest of all festive seasons. A country such as this forces you to look at the haves and have nots every day. It’s impossible to ignore the children walking barefoot down the highway with their grubby faces turned hopefully towards you. Although it may be the case sometimes that the charity we dole out to them ends up in the pockets of scammers who are using these kids to profit themselves, it is still so hard not to feel for them. Best to always have some food on you so that at least they can enjoy that before their pick up and share date arrives.

A couple of canny girls who strut the beat outside a local supermarket have struck a winning formula. When people refuse to give money, they ask sweetly for an ice cream. Having the chance to watch these kids one day, I was not surprised to discover they were eating a lot of ice cream. Good on them I thought. Out shopping with the staff, it’s impossible to ignore their shocked faces when your ham and pate bill adds up to hundreds of thousands, as
much as they spend in a month. While sleek black cars whisper down the main street, how can we ignore the family of five riding on an old motorbike weaving in between? As new condos get built like Legos and moneyed investors snap them up faster than McDonald’s French fries, people nearby are still ploughing their rice fields by hand for a mere fraction of what the bathroom fittings cost. You don’t have to look far to find someone who lives on little and works hard for it. It sometimes seems that there are so many events benefitting the poor, the needy, the disabled and disenfranchised, that you can get philanthropic fatigue, but inevitably something will stir you out of it, and it is often not far from your doorstep. You don’t have to be rich to find something you can give. It’s simple really and giving from your heart is the most important. Next time you buy an ice cream, get a few extra for some local kids, buy an old man a beer, offer up a day or even an hour of your time, be generous in nature, sometimes a smile and a kind word, taking an interest is all that is required to brighten someone’s day. To really appreciate the festive season of giving, give something that has no strings attached, it really does make you happier. [Sarah D]
