Welcome to the April edition of The Beat Jakarta. It’s another jam packed volume of everything you need to keep entertained in this big, beautiful city. Inside you will find all kinds of information on the entertainment coming our way over the next month that varies from film festivals, trance DJs, metal bands, to international indie and mainstream rock and pop bands, art and fashion shows. There is so much going on this city that it’s no wonder people are now calling Jakarta the entertainment capital of the world. But that could be changing up north. The northern zone of the entertainment scene in Jakarta, Kota has long lived a solitary life far removed from the norms of other parts of the city and seeming to be living under a rule of its own. That all changed recently as the new governor decided to crack down on the lawlessness of the place and bring it back into the same line as the rest of town. The objective of the new governor appears to be to clean up the Jakarta recreational drug use problem that is alleged to have been widespread throughout the northern district for many years. Karaoke and dance music clubs are now not allowed to stay open after 4am, some karaoke bars earlier, while most could be open till 7am or longer in the past. What effect this will have on the area in the near future is hard to say and how long it will last is another question, but for the moment early nights appear to be the rigor for the moment, which isn’t a really bad thing when you think about it. It could also have a positive effect on the nightlife scene down south as people don’t bother going north late at night anymore. Only time will tell with this situation. We hope you enjoy this edition of The Beat Jakarta and we also hope you have a rocking month of April. Make a wish everybody and we will see you around this very stylish and up-market nightlife of Jakarta soon. Any comments or ideas please send to editor@beatmag.com

Fun Jazzy Evenings at Kemayoran Jakarta’s recent jazzfest was on balance a real success

you travel around the city, you may have seen evidence of a local propensity for wordy slogans on spanduk (banners) that inevitably become an integral part of the street scene. The jazz festival that took place in the capital right at the beginning of March was no exception, either: The Jakarta International Djarum Super Mild Java Jazz Festival 1-3 March 2013, which took place at Jakarta International Expo, Kemayoran, Central Jakarta, was nonetheless quite a success, despite its wordy official title.

The event has firmly established itself on the global jazz map and this year was able to boast world-class acts like Fourplay, Kenny Garrett and George Duke/Stanley Clarke in its international line-up, as well as headline acts Joss Stone, Lisa Stansfield, Craig David and Basia, and a host of local names. As if to prove that a love of jazz is a lifelong affair, 61-year-old guitarist Lee Ritenour and keyboard player-composer Dave Grusin, 78, paired up and demonstrated via their captivating improvisations that there’s plenty of life in the old dog yet! Ritenour has many fans in Indonesia while Grusin is perhaps better known for his many compositions, most notably the highly distinctive musical soundtrack to the thriller movie The Firm (starring Tom Cruise): Once heard it’s not easily forgotten.

While some may believe that the pioneering jazz style of Miles Davis belongs to a bygone age, it was given a dramatic new lease of life in a stunning performance by a group of musicians known as Miles Smiles, each of whom was highly accomplished in their own right. After running the gauntlet of the ticket scalpers and counterfeit merchandise vendors who crowded the area immediately outside the main gate – seemingly with complete impunity – the Kemayoran venue was a pleasure to browse around and everyone there, young and old, local and expat, seemed to be in a good mood. Mercifully, the rain held off until the final evening so die-hard fans were able to enjoy almost three days of live music-making. The real attraction of this kind of event is that it is a bit like a musical version of

a buffet-style meal: Visitors could enter or leave stages at will, dipping into or out of whatever they liked, coming back for more of whatever took their fancy. Even the performers seemed to be buoyed up by the atmosphere, sometimes appearing together impromptu with little or no advance rehearsal, much to fans’ delight. On the first evening, Indonesian Trade Minister Gita Wirjawan, who is well-known for his love of jazz, proved he’s no slouch at piano jazz improvisation either when he jammed (without prior announcement) with keyboardist Dwiki Dharmawan and String Quartet.

Given the perennial bad-news traffic congestion and flooding stories that plague the capital, it was like a breath of fresh air to see that despite its downside, Jakarta still has much to be proud of. Some will no doubt raise an eyebrow that an event such as this, with potentially enormous appeal to the young and impressionable, is still sponsored by “big tobacco”.

Whether voluntarily or via coercion, a slogan appeared on the advance publicity handouts for the event saying, “Djarum, along with Java Jazz artists, are opposed to kids smoking cigarettes.’’ The same flyers also contained the event’s official tagline, “Jazz Up the World.” Ah well, you On the second day, Italian chanteuse can’t have everything, I suppose. Parc 19 Lberica This new coffeee shop sitting high on the corner of Jalan Raya Kemang and Jalan Taman Kemang is the place to see and be seen opened a couple of months ago. A great hangout spot to watch the Kemang life go by.

Across the street from Umbra is Parc 19, a new hip restaurant that will keep you waiting for hours in queue if you don’t make any advanced booking. Open for lunch and dinner, the food to be honest is not all too special and simply more about the “experience”- however the place is packed with the bourjois crowd nonetheless. After dinner here, some would jump over to Umbra. RSVP: (+6221) 719 9988

Umbra Umbra was the first establishment to ignite the area. When it first opened a few months ago, visitors were saying that it was “the new place on the nomans-land back alley of Kemang”. Umbra is set out to be a premier preclub venue, being the busiest around 11PM-1AM, with DJ and live music taking turns entertaining the yuppie, 30-something, crowd. From here party-goers would head out to clubs in Kemang or other “see and be seen” clubs around town. RSVP: (+62821) 1000 6000

Beer Brother

Cowboys Saloon

For the ABGs (barely legal teenagers), Kemang is the go to place to go for (cheap) beers. So when a new place opens with the word “beer” one would think that it’s one of those “cheap” venues- both in terms of damage cost and setup of the venue. That is not the case for Beer Brother, as their drink menu is impressive (it’s amongst the few venues in town to serve absinthe). Not to mention the place is decked out neatly, and the place is actually wider and taller inside than what it looks like from the outside. RSVP: (+62817) 170 799

Owned by a bunch of Kiwis, Cowboy’s Saloon has a majority of expat guests. From tacos, to ribs to burgers, the food would be even greater if only the sauces were a bit less sweet. A plus is that the portion size is quite generous and servers are fast and friendly. The establishment is all western, which is a nice alternative from all of the “sophisticated” themed joints popping up around Kemang. Here’s a tip for you, they give out free beer every Thursday and Friday 5:30PM - 6:30PM. RSVP: (+6221) 718 3007

Kemang’s Latest Happening Strip By Darren Dylan

T

o say the least, Kemang is always reinventing itself. This is especially true to a strip of road called Jalan Taman Kemang. Just a few months ago this alley was purely for office purposes, but now it has transformed itself as Kemang’s hottest strip, with four new venues opening up almost simultaneously to give life to this once quiet back road.

What was the first record you bought? Any interesting story behind it? I don’t really remember the first record that I bought. What I really remember is one of my older cousins introduced me to Guns N’ Roses’ Appetite for Destruction. I was still in elementary school, 4th grade at the time. Then I asked my mother to buy me the album at Duta Suara Sabang. Appetite for Destruction really changed my life. It was absorbed deep into my bones. While other kids wrote on their school assignments that they wanted to be presidents/doctors/architects when they grew up, I declared that I wanted to be a musician—yes, I fell in love with rock-n-roll since that early age and rock-n-roll became my future. I thank Guns N Roses for that.

Komposisi yang terdiri dari 11 lagu ini masih berkutat pada tema keseharian. Sementara di soal cengkok musik, rangkaian tembang yang dimunculkan lebih berwarna dibanding karya rekaman sebelumnya. “Materi variatif. Kadang keras seperti old school hardcore.

Setelah sedikit mengalami perombakan formasi kini Morfem beranggotakan Jimi Multhazam (biduan), Pandu Fuzztoni (gitar, vokal latar), Freddie A. Warnerin (drum) dan Yanu Fuadi (bas, vokal latar). Ikuti terus perkembangan Morfem dengan rutin menyambangi situs resmi mereka di morfem.wordpress.com. Especially their second full-length album, Hey, Makan Tuh Gitar!, which was just released last month.

The first single, “180 Derajat”, was released for free online earlier (before the album formally launched). At the same time the Jakarta quartet also published their video clip for the single. Consisting of 11 songs, the album’s theme remains dominated by daily issues. The sound through the whole album is more raw than their previous record, Indonesia. Morfem, founded in 2009, is one the music projects of Jimi Multhazam, one of the long standing Jakarta alternative scenesters.

espite steady rain, a huge crowd packed St Peter’s Square in the Vatican to bursting point in midMarch to await the fumata bianca, the white smoke from a chimney above the Sistine Chapel that would signal a new pope had been chosen. That crowd was not alone: Despite living in an age of 24/7 TV news and globalised broadband internet, the only way initially that news an appointment had been made was via those smoke signals, so a host of TV cameras with long lenses were trained on that iconic chimney for days as the rest of the world watched and waited.

Much more recently, some of the bells at Westminster Abbey in London were muffled (to dullen their sound) when they were rung at the end of the funeral of Diana, Princess of Wales in September 1997. That was a replication of a method first used in medieval times to signal to local people the passing away of an important figure in their community – an early version of targeted messaging using the mass media (church bells) available at the time.

What all of these examples illustrate is that the strong desire to communicate messages as quickly as possible is not simply a product of the impatient, impulsive age in which we currently live, The Vatican deliberately chose this but has always existed. all composers in the history of classical music, Johann Sebastian Bach might be the one that is recognized the most for his religious music compositions or what I call ‘heavenly music’. As one of the foremost baroque era composers, Bach is known for his skill in contrapuntal invention and motivic control, improvisation, exposure to German, Italian and French music; as well as his devotion to the Christian deity in the Lutheran tradition. This is why his music would be very suitable to accompany this coming Easter.

of the Passions only two have survived including St. John Passion. Unlike St. John Passion, St. Matthew Passion is longer and a more complicated orchestration. It is also more reflective and resigned in character. This masterpiece was probably first performed on 11 April 1727 in the St. Thomas Church and the last one was in 1746. Then it was never heard again outside Leipzig until 1829, when Felix Mendelssohn performed an abbreviated and modified version in Berlin to great acclaim.

ome say that classical music and jazz is like a sister from a different mother. The roots of jazz are classical music, however jazz has the freedom on doing impromptu improvisations while classical music, like its character, is more rigid and has to follow what is written on the composition. Nevertheless, some composers like to play around between these two genres and creating classical music pieces that are jazzy and vice versa. On this edition, we are going to discuss the life story between Francis Poulenc - a classicist and his best friend Darius Milhaud - a modernist. French composer Francis Poulenc was first started as pianist. His decisive turn to be a composer happened when he met famous composer: Erik Satie. Deeply impressed by Satie’s fruitful eccentricities in the then-shocking manner of Dadaism, Poulenc joined an ostentatiously selfdescriptive musical group called the Nouveaux Jeunes - later known as Les Six. The 6 musicians included, besides Poulenc: Auric, Durey, Arthur Honegger, Milhaud, and Tailleferre.

His fascination with jazz tunes began when he heard “authentic” jazz tunes for the first time on the streets of Harlem during a trip to the United States in 1922. The tunes left him with a great impact to his musical outlook. Using ideas and idioms from jazz, he completed his next composition: La Creation du Monde - cast as a ballet in six continuous dance scenes on the following year. If you curious on how modern classical music sounds, then make sure you don’t miss the show.

CD REVIEW

Foals

Holy Fire Foals have come a long way since their debut effort “Antidotes” became an underground sensation, and with new album Holy Fire it seems the Oxford fivepiece are determined to court a more mainstream audience.

Kicking off in a style not unlike the atmospheric tribal intro to The Stone Roses’ Second Coming (although thankfully not as long), “Prelude” does exactly what it says on the tin, leading in perfectly to the showpiece of Holy Fire, namely “Inhaler”. Starting off as a groovy, marimba infused slice of disco-ish pop, it’s pretty standard Foals territory, but at 1 minute and 49 seconds the whole thing goes mental, exploding into a chorus that sounds more Tom Morello or Dave Navarro than five pasty lads from the home counties with short guitar straps. It’s a clever trick that Foals have used before (“Two Steps Twice”, “Spanish Sahara”), and in this case it’s used to devastating effect – the classic slow lead in marching inevitably towards the punch in the guts – you just never expect it to be quite so thunderous. For lead singer Yannis Phillippakis, it’s a far cry from the mumbled, understated style of most Foals numbers; “I just can’t get enough…SPAAAAAAAAAACCCEEEEE” he screams at full tilt, succeeding in exercising his vocal chords and exorcising a few internal demons while he’s at it. The next highpoint is “My Number”, which is the closest we get to the Foals of Antidotes – the fidgety noodling of Jimmy Smith’s guitar driving the song from one catchy hook to the next. The most radiofriendly track on Holy Fire it’s the obvious single and has already charted well - festival headlining invites no doubt in the post as we speak. Three songs in and so far so amazing, but as with 2010’s Total Life Forever there’s a definite drop off as the album moves on from there. That’s not to say it has nothing else to offer; “Late Night” is another groovy synth-soaked gem, and “Stepson” is a gorgeously tender ballad set to rumbling drums and dotted with twinkly guitar tremolos. However, truth be told, nothing else on Holy Fire quite matches up to the genuinely astonishing “Inhaler” and its prelude, but encouragingly, there is plenty in there to suggest that Foals really are on the cusp of greatness. This season's candy bags collection that also comes in combination with exotic leather bases

Sneak Peek: Shine Bright with Furla Spring/ Summer 2013 Collection By: AmaliaHayati Who's a fan of Furla here? Raise your hands, please!

There's also a slimmer version of the bangle timepiece that you can wear together with their resin bangle to create a serious arm party.

www.beatmag.com

My pick is this large bangle time piece in B&W polkadot. I want to take it home with me!

STYLE I know that Furla is known for their Candy bags and they are just too cute to ignore, right? Especially the colourful ones, ooh, they're too yummy not to notice. Rejoice for those of you who are really loving the line, because the Candy bag universe is expanding girls! Let's start with the colour palette. Since it's the Spring/ Summer collection, of course the colours would be bright and fun. The collection is dominated by colours such as lime, papaya and ocean blue - all in the candy range and their leather goods. You can also see their refined take on the classic black and white. In case you haven't noticed, clean black and white are going to be big this season. The inspiration? It came from the play of lights. Imagine a summer afternoon where a ray of sunlight seeps through your window and catches the different surfaces of your furniture, water and your surroundings. Like I said above, Candy bag collectors (or soon to be ones), behold, because you're going to like what's coming next. I present you the Candy bag accessories! They're too cute, are they not? Now if you want to give extra cuteness to your Candy bag, this season there will be a range of accessories you can choose from. Such as the miniature version of your Candy bag or a bow to complement your Candy bagbecause that's another big thing this season. What about shoes? My favorite part! Shoes aren't new to the range, but this season's big bow take on the shoes will really steal the spotlight wherever you're heading. Available in both heels, flats and even wedges (without the bow, though). Now that I've got the whole Candy range out of the way, it is time to present you more exciting things from Furla this season. I've got to say that I'm quite mesmerized by the time piece collection from Furla. It's a range of colorful bangle type watches made of resin, available in solid colors and also patterns, such as polka dots and animal prints. Did you know that Furla also has their sunglass collection here? Ranging from about 1,500k which you can purchase directly from their boutique. But, there's also something new this season. It's the Venus satchel shaped in dome-like two toned black and white handles, just what I love from the Penelope tote. The love for a structured bag this season shines right through in this bag. It's functional, because like most bags nowadays it comes with a strong strap as well. Ever so chic and classic. It's expected to be the belle of the ball of this season's release. I’m going so freakishly insane over the Furla Spring/Summer 2013 collection and I want the whole world to know!

Looks That You Need to Master for Spring/summer 2013

H

ave you been following the trends from this season? I love that this season’s trends are not too loud and, dare I say, it’s all about the classics. All the trends that I’m about to tell you here are something that you can carry from this season and beyond. I love investing in pieces that don’t only last for one season. Before continuing with my story, all I want to say is, whatever the trend is for a specific season, it’s all up to you on how you interpret it and make it your own; because being a fashion victim is not the goal.

1. Going Nautical with Classic Black and White Stripes Nautical is the ‘it’ theme of the season. One thing it requires is a striped top! I won’t go overboard with the whole nautical look and I much prefer the classic black and white stripes, as it’s much more classic and easier to mix and match than any other colours. Black and white alone is big this season. That is why to keep the colour palette to this season’s trend, keep it within the black and white hue. Another thing to remember when using stripes is to pair it up with a solid. If you’re wearing a top or jacket, let it be the centre of attention. In choosing striped pieces, for those of you who are curvy, pick a top instead of a dress and choose one with thinner stripes. Whereas if you have boyish figure and want to create some curves, pick a wider and bolder striped dress.

60

www.beatmag.com

STYLE 2. Denim on Denim One trend that for me personally is hard to master, but looks über chic is denim. Denim is a classic, period. But combining denim with another denim piece is very up to the moment. My tip to keep it either monochromatic (same shade and material) or you go all out with different shades and material. But in case you aren’t brave enough to get into the denim on denim trend, denim alone will be making a strong presence this season. So it’s the perfect time to go hunt for your perfect pair. Mango has just the perfect collection for jeans this season, for every personality and style.

3. A Patch of Leather For those of you that have been in the leather bandwagon for the last couple of seasons, rejoice, because it’s here to stay. But instead of going full blown leather, this season’s trend takes a more subtle application of leather with patches of leather in a jacket, skirt or even top. It tones down the rocker chic feel and makes it more preppy. Definitely a more feminine take on the whole leather trend.

4. A Hint of Aqua and Mint With the classic colours making a comeback, where does that leave the colourful shades for this season? My favourite tone for this season is aqua and mint. It’s so refreshing after a series of bolder colours for the past couple of seasons. Definitely would amp up my black & white and neutral tones dominated wardrobe. Now, it’s time to head down to Mango to grab all of these Spring/Summer 2013 collections and get the items that I want. What I will definitely get is the leather patch jacket or coat and probably an aqua accessory. www.beatmag.com

COSMIC JEANS X ARTIST SERIES

C

osmic Jeans X Artist Series is a collaborative project between Cosmic and rock musicians. It was kicked off last week at Saffron in Kemang with a discussion and show from the first two musicians to collaborate - David Bayu from Naif and Kaka from Slank—two of the most popular Indonesian performers and bands over the past 15 years. According to Cosmic, the two were chosen to be part of the collaboration based on their attitude, characters, and their status in the development of popular music in this country. The collaboration is representative of their freedom of expression, and their endeavour not to be limited by the expectations of the music industry and its aesthetic boundaries. Kaka is a vocalist who has worked for 29 years in the Indonesian music scene and has a very strong and energetic character. The Kaka Slank Series Jeans are based on “Rock!” This is created by the shape of torn pants or better known as ‘destroyed denim’, in addition to the ‘stone washed’ look, ‘destroyed wash‘ jeans hold their shape giving the impression of many years of use. In addition there are some details adapted from Kaka’s

character, one being a pocket containing storage for a guitar pick made of genuine leather. Meanwhile, David is the lead singer and frontman of Naif. After the success of the first Cosmic collaboration for making shoes, called the David Series, this time around it’s jeans, creatively called the Cosmic Series ‘David Bayu’. The jeans design tries to capture David’s energetic performance style with a skinny stretch which makes it easier for the wearer to move freely. Something that this extravagent showman is well known for. They also possess a retro look using a stone wash technique that produces a vintage effect, and the jeans also contain artwork featuring a caricature of David’s face in a decorative design. After the discussion about these exciting jeans, both musicians and some friends jammed it out for the small gathering of invited guests on the rooftop at Saffron. E&O opens to great acclaim E&O (Eastern & Oriental), a unique collaboration between acclaimed chef Will Meyrick and the Loewy Group, located in Mega Kuningan, opened a few weeks ago to great acclaim and instant success. E&O is bringing a new level in Asian dining through Will Meyrick’s menu of Thai-Vietnamese cuisine, and an exciting cocktail and wine list. The new restaurant, which is in the opposite building from the now famous Lowey restaurant, has been packing diners in since day one and quickly become the hottest dining property in town. E&O’s menu is the result of Will Meyrick’s journeys and travels, as well as his vision and interpretation of what constitutes honest Thai and Vietnamese cuisine. Aruba Escape to the beach in the city? Now you can. Welcome to Aruba!

P

asaraya Blok M was once a hip and happening shopping center in Jakarta and although competition is fierce nowadays, they’re making an effort to bring the people back to the mall. One good way to do it is to lure Jakarta’s foodies with food and beverage outlets. Aruba is a new restaurant with a punchy concept; bringing a seaside atmosphere to the city. The place looks like an oversized beach shack. Light colored wood dominates the airy interior, juxtaposing with the colorful chairs and sofas. The paintings also add a nice nautical ambience.

The two-storey Aruba is spacious; the first floor is dedicated for dining, and the second is more a bar/lounge area also with dining. But the most striking feature of the restaurant is the porch, which is available on both floors. Okay, so there’s ocean view, but the cozy veranda is still a hot spot to be at. The menu has a lot of Mexican options, and our minds flew to Cancun or Baja with the Nachos Grande (59); tasty fried tortilla chips, ground beef, refried beans, cheese, guacamole, sour cream, and salsa fresca. It’s a nice dish to get you started, visually and tastefully striking. If you feel like something different from your usual appetizer, you should try the Gazpacho (32k). This is a Mediterranean inspired soup, served chilled, and chock full of tomatoes, cucumbers, and red and green peppers. While a touch of New England can be had with the Clam Chowder (42k); a hearty mix of white clams, leeks, potatoes, and celery, cooked in clam juice and cream.

maison butter, béarnaise, or the superb special homemade Aruba BBQ, which was our choice. As for dessert, there are several pies to be picked, like the Pumpkin, Granny’s Apple, or Key Lime, but we just couldn’t pass on the Lindt Chocolate Truffle Cake (all are 45k/slice, respectively).Yummy! Aruba also make some of the most delectable drinks in town. The Cayman Cooler (35k) mocktail is a refreshing mix of crushed lemon grass and watermelon, topped with seltzer water. And the bartenders at Aruba really go to town with their potent blends; try the signature punch Aruba Aruba (95k/glass, 250k/jar) mixes light rum with fresh coconut water, honey, and freshly squeezed orange, served with sliced oranges and young coconut flesh.

Aruba is a new restaurant with a fun concept; bringing a seaside atmosphere to the city.

Another taste of Mexico came in the form of the Shredded Beef Burrito (69k); the flour tortilla is filled with shredded beef, refried beans, Mexican rice, cheese, guacamole, sour cream, and salsa fresca. One thing’s for sure, The Bahama Mama (95k) is another marvelous this place really serious about their dishes. The mix of aged rum with vanilla-infused rum, guacamole and salsa fresca are ¡muy delicioso! coconut and banana liqueur, freshly squeezed orange, lemon and pineapple juice, a splash of The Aruba Chicken (99k) proved to be a pomegranate syrup, and a dash of Angostura dish worth waiting for. samy's curry

Spice up your dining experience with some intoxicating Indian fare at Samy’s Curry!

S

amy’s Curry was established in Singapore by the late Mr. M. Veerasamy, back in the 1950s. Mr.Veerasamy, who himself was an excellent chef, is credited with the creation of some of the signature dishes. This longserving restaurant became a popular place among locals and tourists alike. The success can be attributed to the menu’s variety and the great lengths the restaurant goes to please the crowd. And we were delighted when they made their way here early last year, bringing the wonderful taste of India to Jakarta. Samy’s Curry started out in Krekot area, then SCBD, and Setiabudi One building. The SCBD outlet was relocated to Pacific Place mall not too long ago, and that’s where we visited them recently. Being inside a modern shopping mall, the decoration of the restaurant was not overdone with all things Indian. But the distinct arches brought a regal feel, and the well-trained staff greet and treat you like royalty.

A Basket of Papadum (3.5k for 2 pieces, or 10k for 6 pieces) started us on our culinary journey. Papadum is a thin, crisp cracker, typically served Also at as an accompaniment to a meal in India. Setiabudi Building One Next up, came the Chicken Martabak (35k for small, or 50k for large). Just like the Indonesian version, this is pan-fried bread stuffed with chicken, cooked with garlic, egg, and onion, and served with curry dipping sauce. You can also get the Mutton, Sardine, or Seafood Martabak, should you feel like it.

rice cooked in spices and saffron to perfection. To accompany the Briyani, we chose the Curry Mutton (40k for small portion, 75k for large); cubes of tender lamb meat cooked in flavorful curry, and the Cauliflower Sixty-Five (15k for small, 35k for large); deep fried cauliflower marinated in special spices.

If you’re not in the mood for rice, the Plain Prata (15k) is a wonderful substitute. A prata is a type of flatbread that originated in the Indian subcontinent in the Pakistani and Indian state of Punjab. The word Paratha comes from the words parat and atta which literally means layers of cooked dough. The prata is accompanied with a curry dipping sauce. There are several types of prata at Samy’s Curry; some savory, and some sweet. But even the sweet one like the Bomb Prata (25k) comes with a curry dip. Believe us, the juxtaposition of savory and sweetness is some kind of wonderful! And if you prefer your prata thinner, the Tissue Prata (15k) is the one to try. If you’re too busy to pick the dishes ala carte, go for the lunch/dinner packages. There’s vegetarian (35k), meat (65k), seafood (90k), and meat & seafood (105k) combo for every taste. The refreshing Samy’s Lime Juice (19.9k) is the perfect drink to accompany your meal, but the Teh Tarik (13.9k for hot, 15.9k for iced) is also a popular choice here. A return trip to Samy’s Curry is definitely on. There are still plenty of tantalizing dishes to choose from and we think there’s a Fish Head Curry waiting with our name on it! lanet Hollywood is a restaurant inspired by Hollywood and the movies. It was first launched in New York on October 22, 1991, with the backing of Hollywood stars Sylvester Stallone, Bruce Willis, Demi Moore and Arnold Schwarzenegger. The Jakarta outlet of Planet Hollywood was established in 1994 with much fanfare. Throughout the years and through several global economic crises, the franchise was forced to slim down and close many of the outlets in America as well as worldwide. But the Jakarta one has survived.

the superb Hollywood Bowl Salad (67k); a combo of crisp salad greens, diced chicken, bacon, diced eggs, mixed cheese, tomato, avocado, corn, sliced black olive, croutons, with red wine vinaigrette dressing. Our evening started in the right way. The Chicken BBQ Pizza (77k) was devoured in minutes. The grilled diced chicken breast, sautéed onion, parmesan, Monterrey Jack, and cheddar cheese, plus tangy sweet BBQ sauce combined very well on top of the crispy pizza base.

Now, the Sizzling Beef Fajitas (115k), Recently, we had a get-together of the old Chicken 95k, Veggie 89k, Combo 110k) was gang, most of whom did experience the a real box-office success! Bed Glasses Flat on your b a c k ? Pi n c h e d nerves in your neck? These glasses let you watch TV or read a book without raising your head! Whatever the problem that restricts your head and neck mobility -neck pain, osteoporosis, arthritis, pinched nerves, stroke, spine injury -- with Bed Glasses, you can read your book without holding it in midair or view TV or iPad without raising that aching neck. Wear them like regular eyeglasses -- they even fit over prescription glasses. They work on principles of reflection and refraction, a change in the angle of light without a change of medium. The prism is adjustable and reversible, meaning when standing upright, with a flip of the glasses you can view what’s above your head (helpful for painting ceilings!) or at your feet. Bed Glasses are also helpful for those who get claustrophobic in MRIs or other medical scanners because they can change your view from the all-too-close dome of the machine to the space past your feet and into the outer room. We have to admit that this one stumped us at first. Who uses a knife so frequently that they need to have a knife sharpener with them at all times? Edward Scissorhands? Scary thought, you know what we’re saying? But then, we put our thinking caps on and supposed that maybe this wasn’t so out there. For example, if you are a knife-thrower in the circus, you want those knives to be super sharp so that they stick into any wooden surface. And if you are a sword swallower, you definitely would want your swords to be really sharp, right? (Maybe not.) Plus, there are the old standbys for knife-wielders: chefs, park rangers, and Alaskan deep sea fishermen. You can never be too prepared, really. www.thinkgeek.com $16.99 www.beatmag.com
