We are now at the beginning of Ramadhan and we wish you all a very fruitful and relaxing time during the next four weeks as Jakarta slows down to a crawl and most of the populous spend most of their time fasting during the day and breaking the fast in the early evening. It’s a joyous time for the Muslims of Jakarta and the world as they show they have what it takes to control their inward and outward emotions and desires, and repent their transgressions over the past year or so. This is before the Idul Fitri celebrations come along a month from now where everything gets back to normal. For the rest of the community it’s a time of relaxing too as there isn’t a real lot to do around the place. You can find bars and restaurants open in the major hotels and malls but there’s definitely no clubbing or partying to be seen in most parts town. As people have said to me, it’s a good time to get some work done without too many nightlife distractions and if all else fails; Bali is not that far away for the weekend. We won’t be printing the beat magazine over the next few weeks as obviously there aren’t a lot of events or things for us to talk about going on during this period. It’s a different time to be in the capital of Indonesia, we hope you enjoy the quieter pace and the time for some reflection. We shall see you soon enough but meanwhile click on www.beatmag.com as we will be updating the site almost daily with the latest news and what’s on information and events. Happy Ramadhan, Selamat Menunaikan Ibadah Puasa

Muslims all over the world have been waiting for the arrival of Ramadhan. In Indonesia there’s a homecoming tradition toward the Eid al Fit-r. The tradition is also observed by the majority of house maids which naturally creates great inconveniences within many urban households in Jakarta. With that in mind, Aston Rasuna Jakarta offers the Ramadhan package from July 19 through the end of August 2012. The offer is available for families and visitors from outside Jakarta looking to spend time with friends and loved ones during the month of Ramadhan and Lebaran. Guests can also enjoy break from fasting meal, Ta’jil, which is available in hi-tea fashion or light buffet meal at Mezza Café Bar & Lounge during the whole fasting month.

Otel Lobby | Sunday 30 July | 8pm Have Been

This group was originally named Kumar ‘n’ the Soulmakers but they must’ve thought Dice en the Soulmakers was a better name. What music are you into at the moment? LMNOP by Jamie Aditya Graham

www.beatmag.com

What was the first record you bought—any interesting story behind it? U2’s Achtung Baby was my first record. I bought the cassette when I was just 12 years old. My cousin introduced me to it. I instantly fell in love with U2. (My friends thought I was weird.) That album forced me to start learning English so that I could understand the lyrics.

Achtung Baby. Not only because it’s the first album I ever bought, I seriously think it’s U2’s masterpiece. Even though lots of people think U2’s Joshua Tree is better, to me Achtung Baby is their ultimate album. It has the most complex repertoire, arrangement wise; plus their electronic, avant-garde exploration. Dark. Intense. Seductive. The most effective collaboration between U2 and Brian Eno.

What was the worst record you ever purchased? Scorpion. Forgot which album. I bought it out of curiosity. But even from the first track I didn’t like it. Maybe that’s why I don’t remember what the album was. It refuses to stay in my brain. Hehe.

Who do you want to be, other than yourself, next time you reincarnate? A bird.

What book are you reading now and what’s the score (1-10)? Nelson Mandela: Conversation With Myself.

Score? Hmm... I think the book is very inspiring. I’m more concerned about wishing a leader like Mandela could materialise in Indonesia and save this country.

What new movie should people see? Why? Soegija. Not because of the theme or the story. But more about the approach Garin Nugroho takes. He uses cinema almost like a diorama. That’s naughty. As a film director, it makes me wonder how Garin was able to convince other people—people with complex interests and big expectation, to be precise—to invest. And then he treated the movie, the investment, in a rather “unserious” way via the diorama approach. It really bothers me. Hahaha...

sing the somber moniker of Grieve, a new record store in the Fatmawati area in South Jakarta is quickly establishing itself as the go to place for rare underground records of the darkly kind.

Opened to the public late last year, the store mostly specializes in records and merchandises of the heavy rock genre, namely heavy metal, doom, sludge, thrash metal, stoner rock, black metal, and its numerous varieties. Grieve Records sell the usual CD format but is trying to focus on the more-collectable, and rarer, vinyl format - a task it has found challenging, to say the least, according to co-owner Uri Putra.

www.beatmag.com

The store’s metal-centric focus doesn’t keep it from stocking other genres, however. Other releases from underground artists of the nonmetal, namely indie rock kind, have found their way onto the store’s still-miniscule shelves. Nevertheless, Uri’s passion for the heavier spectrum of music makes Grieve ultimately a store for the metal militias of the city. As the singer of doom rock duo Ghaust (read as Ghost), Uri has spent much of his years splitting ears with the band’s brand of orchestral-sounding metal. He has spent even more time dreaming every musician’s dream of one day owning their own record store.

“One of my biggest impetuses for owning a record store is that movie (about a record store owner) ‘High Fidelity,’ which I saw in senior high school,” Uri says.

Grieve officially opened its doors on October of last year. Having only a few months under its belt, Uri humorously admits to the store’s management still being characteristically “chaos styled.” To this day, both Uri and Sayiba take turns in watching the store in shifts from the time it opens at 10 in the morning, until it closes at nine at night, “or whenever the last guy whose still browsing for stuff leaves,” Uri explains. “We’re definitely still in the learning process, especially in terms of sales reports and promotion,” he says. As a small store, the co-owners are still in the early days of building connections with labels and distributors that want to stock their releases in Grieve. Fortunately, both Uri and Sayiba have amassed a commendable amount of networking through their respective bands. Uri has released records through various labels around the world, and has relied on filling up a large part of the store with those labels’ releases. Having the under-distributed local independent bands stock their CDs and t-shirts was hardly a concern. To fill up the rest of the store, Uri and Sayiba purchase records online, buying in bulk to receive discounts. It’s clear that Uri and Sayiba cherish the personal atmosphere of the store, building a friendlike rapport with its customers. Though it sells products, Grieve is less “business” and more “hobby.” Like most other independent record store, Grieve is about stocking up its owners’ passion projects. “As a record store, we try to only carry music that we love, and we are always on the lookout for new, cool, weird and awesome music,” says Sayiba, paraphrasing Grieve’s mission statement. Sayiba adds that “financial concerns” are the least of the store’s worries.

f e a t u r e

Both Uri and Sayiba are also keen on promoting their fellow underground musicians. “We are constantly distributing more and more stuff from Southeast Asia, especially here, in any formats.” Both Uri and Sayiba hope that Grieve will bring about a change, if a miniscule one, of how the younger generation of local music fans listen and purchase music; hopefully reintroducing the value of buying physical releases. “It has been a challenge,” Uri says. Not only has the sales of t-shirts surpassed the sales of records at the store, the dream of selling rare albums has not been met with much success, except with purchase from the same old record collectors around the city (most of them in bands themselves). Still, a 100-limited pressing, self-released splitrecord featuring both Ghaust and Kelelawar Malam sold within days, even though it was pressed in vinyl, an extremely rare format for local bands of any genre. That each copy cost Rp.180.000, a relatively hefty price for a local release, says that there is still a thirst for collectables. At the end of the day, the challenges and triumphs all add up to a much enjoyed experience for the co-owners. “We want to support the music we love and the ideas we agree with,” they both say.

What (really) happens to Kemang during fasting month” Darren Dylan

www.beatmag.com

On the final days prior to the start of fasting month, nightlife in Kemang was bustling with “closing parties” as if the Kemang nightlife days are numbered. Is it really?

If

you talk about the street vendors that sell cheap-to-nothing food, it’s back to the kampungs for them for the whole month. “Nobody eats porridge for breakfasting,” says Jono who sells porridge out of his small porridge cart in front of BCA bank Kemang. But what about the nightlife scene? One of our favorite places, Triple Nine, is definitely closed for the month.

Tunggul, a regular at one of Kemang’s nightspots, claimed that during last year’s fasting month, they served him up his usual whiskey sour out of a tea cup. He remembered that there were some conspicuous looking people coming in and out of bars and restaurants to “make sure” nobody was drinking alcohol or that the music wasn’t too loud. These people are from a random “public organization” and are resented by the Kemang crowd as they act as if they are above the law and think that they can get away with it. “It’s unfair as many of us in this industry can’t make a proper living for a month. Any establishment that offers food has to cover up their windows and even further bars are “obligated” to also empty their bar rack and do not display any alcoholic beverages.

f e a t u r e

However, although no partying, all is not lost in Kemang. “SF (Second Floor) will be closed for the month, but Cox Bar will continue to operate,” says Cox Rar and SF operations manager. “We won’t be serving alcohol, and instead of 2am, we close at 12am”. Opening late after 3pm and closing at 12am seems to be the way for Kemang restaurants for the fasting month. However, this is not the end of it. If you need your day’s glass (or bottle) of fine cabernet sauvignon, Kemang’s premier wine retailer Vin+ is still open for business although their business somewhat drops 50 percent said Aga, manager of Vin+.

031

maintain business as usual in their premises. As clubs close down and lounges calm down during fasting month, it doesn’t mean Kemang will transform into a ghost town. “Our company is planning to do a break-fasting dinner in Kemang some time next week,” said Roy who works in an IT company with 35 strong employees. It’s also business as usual up at Toscana, the famous Italian restaurant on Jalan Raya Kemang too. According to the manager the restaurant is open from 11am till 11pm last orders, which effectively only knocks an hour off the day’s play. Break-fasting has become a tradition to strengthen bonds of families and friends, and Kemang provides the many food options for this tradition. So, the conclusion is you can still get away with a spot of wine and dine action in Kemang during fasting month, but in a more “subtle” way. Definitely no heavy partying though!

THE ICONIC LOUIS VUITTON MONOGRAM IN THE EYES OF 6 PHOTOGRAPHERS

The History of Louis Vuitton Monogram

No one will deny that THE Louis Vuitton Monogram has reached iconic status. People see the Monogram in a different light, and through the eyes of six talented and rising photographers around the region, we will see what the Monogram means to them. The collective artistic photography shows the many facets of Monogram.

The Monogram itself was first debuted in 1896 and it celebrated its 100th anniversary back in 1996. It bears the Louis Vuitton initials, a small flower and a four-leaf clover. When it was first created, the monogram canvas was not how it is today, it was created from a woven material, used only for trunks and structured luggage. Therefore, the line has always been associated with the art of travel. It was only later in 1906 that the first coated monogram canvas was launched, but the material was too brittle for manufacturing soft-sided articles. The Monogram canvas as we know it today was the brainchild of Henri Vuitton (grandson of Louis Vuitton) later on, in 1959. It’s with this new material that we see the birth of various travel bags, city bags and small leather totes. From the timeless Speedy and Noe, to the more recent Lockit.

www.beatmag.com

The Photographers Interpretation of Louis Vuitton Monogram I haven’t given much thought to how people interpret the Louis Vuitton monogram. But through the lenses of six photographers from around the region, I see how people see the Monogram differently. That it transcends across generations and style. You’d be amazed how people translate Monogram. The six photographers are Lan Chi Sheng (Taiwan), Le Tuan Anh (Vietnam), Micky Wong (Singapore), Sean Lee Davies (Hong Kong), Thananon Thanakornkarn (Thailand) and the talented Nicoline Patricia Malina (Indonesia).

Q: What was your inspiration? A: I was inspired by the effortless style, yet functional, suppleness, endurance of the monogram and my dynamic life in the city (Jakarta). Q: What did you want to achieve with your concept? A: I wish my photographs will highlight and capture a laid-back lifestyle of a young active woman who enjoys life in good spirits and is passionate in the things that she does. Just like what I usually see and do in the midst of my work, e.g., going to book and music stores, indulging myself by chatting with friends in a

small cozy cafe, and walking around the small (flower) street market, taking pictures as much as I like. Q: What would your own monogram be like? A: A keep all Bandouliere 50, where I can stuff my camera, gadget, book, Ipad and agenda. Nicoline Patricia Malina is a Surabayaborn photographer who refined her art in photography while she studied in Utrecht. She has won many prestigious awards such as ”IconiqueSocietas Excellence in Fashion Photography” (2007), ”Young Photographer of the Year” (Elle Style Awards 2009) and ”Photographer of The Year” (A+ Scarlett Celebrity Fashion Awards, 2009). With credentials such as editorial photo shoots for Harper’s Bazaar, Elle, Amica and Marie Claire, as well as few commercial photo shoots under her sleeve, it’s not a surprise that she was the chosen photographer by Louis Vuitton. www.beatmag.com

Nicoline described her inspiration and explained further on what is a Louis Vuitton monogram from her perspective. I’m sure her depiction of the monogram is quite familiar to you. I can’t agree with her more when she said that it’s all about effortless style and the dynamic life of Jakarta. “I see a laid-back lifestyle of a young woman; she is active, enjoys life in a good spirit, and is very passionate.” said Nicoline. You see how versatile Louis Vuitton Monogram is for women in Jakarta. From an informal lunch with friends, casual weekend, to the office. You see women toting them effortlessly.

I

was so engulfed with the image of Salvatore Ferragamo Signorina that I created in my mind (from seeing the promotional images) that my heart would skip a beat when I first sprayed it onto my wrist. Would it be like what I’d expected? Before I tell you about the actual feeling after I sniffed it for the first time, let me tell you of my own Signorina story. Because of the name Signorina, which means “young woman” in Italian, I imagined this would be something fresh, cheeky and full of life. But the design of the bottle, wearing the Vara bow with pride, shows that it has a sense of chic and style. It’s going to be like that favorite friend of yours who is bubbly yet stylish. And … I was right. Salvatore Ferragamo Signorina is everything that I’d imagined. It opens up with bubbly pink pepper and red currant which then contrasted with the blooming combination of the feminine and elegant feel

of jasmine, rose and peony. I don’t feel that there’s any single floral note that is more overpowering than the rest, they breathe together in harmony. But the best is yet to come. I love the dry down, because it delivers an unexpected sweetness of pannacotta that is a bit creamy and sweet. It blends together with soft musks and woody patchouli notes. After a second thought, I think the story that this fragrance is trying to tell, vividly portrayed in Salvatore Ferragamo Signorina video campaign. If you haven’t already seen it, you need to look it up. Oh, and I’m so envious of the girl’s Salvatore Ferragamo Varina flats collection on the video. If only I lived in my own fairytale... Salvatore Ferragamo Signorina is available in Eau de Parfum 50ml (IDR 900,000) and 100ml (IDR 1,250,000).

Jonathan Wilson

Gentle Spirit

E

veryone knows surfy rock is dead and Jack Johnson is the one who killed it with those stupid feel good lyrics, that annoyingly toned waterman physique and the non-threatening, infuriatingly likeable persona. Bastard. But hey, even the beach bars of Bali have almost stopped playing it now, so it must be about time for it to take on a new direction… Enter stage left Jonathan Wilson. Actually reading that passage again I’ve decided it might be a bit unfair to lump Wilson in with the ‘surf rock’ moniker since there’s nothing overtly surfy about the scruffy Northern California resident. Having said that, Gentle Spirit is absolutely the kind of record that’s guaranteed to pop up on some nostalgic 70s revival surfy flick, bathed in fluttering flutes and woozy piano that keeps the whole thing nicely idling along in the slow lane.

Wonderful Wow Worthy Worthless Worm Fodder

So slow in fact, upon first listen I had to check I hadn’t accidentally ingested a couple of valiums, the fragile vocals and languid aura lulling me into a state of blissful near paralysis atop my sofa. “Natural Rhapsody” drifts along sounding distinctly Pink Floydish, complete with spacey guitars and the kind of wandering five minute solo that Neil Young would be proud of, while the stripped back “Can We Really Party Today?” goes all Thoreau with Wilson nattering on about beavers and ragged rivers, his guitar and voice getting a rare chance to shine without the psychedelic clutter of most of the other tracks. “Can we really party today/with all that’s going on” he whispers lazily, leaving one wondering exactly what is going on up in Laurel Canyon (Wilson’s home) other than repacking the bong and chopping some wood out back. The obvious standout track on Gentle Spirit is the stunning “Desert Raven”, which once you’ve got past the first 45 seconds of wonky electronica becomes a soaring beauty of a song, the descending riff effortlessly falling off of Wilson’s fretboard in an intoxicating slice of hazy 70s reverie. At 90 minutes the more impatient listeners may find Gentle Spirit a bit too drawn out, but if you’ve got nowhere else to be then it’s the perfect Sunday soundtrack. Dan Ashcroft

PARADISE INN A Chinese restaurant with heavenly taste now opens in Jakarta!

T

ucked away on a corner in the basement level of Plaza Indonesia shopping mall, this Chinese eatery opened its doors for Jakarta’s foodies on June 26. Paradise Inn is another Singapore-based franchise restaurant. Speaking of which, a friend of mine remembered stopping by a Paradise Inn outlet at Changi Airport on his recent trip there. He told me that before his flight he had an invigorating Chinese herbal tea, infused with fruits, herbs, and flowers. More on this drink later. Recently my friend suggested a little get together for our group of friends after a day of work and he opted for the newly opened Paradise Inn. The central location makes it an ideal meeting point, especially for some of our friends working around Sudirman and Thamrin areas. The décor looks like an old school tea house, simple and charming. It could be an homage to the more classical era, but with some subtle contemporary touches. The food is said to be a variety of timeless favorite fares. Chinese comfort food, maybe? Whatever it is, we were about to embark on a culinary trip to China. Sharing is definitely the name of the game here. It’s always fun to try a little bit of everything that was laid out on your table. We began with a pot of the Jasmine, Osmanthus, Dried Longan, and Chrysanthemum Herbal Tea (25k). The menu explains that this drink nourishes heart and spleen, strengthens eyesight, and improves immune system. Hey, that’s good enough for us. It was a wonderful, hearty start to our meal. We then continue with one of Paradise Inn’s

signature traditional Chinese double-boiled soups; the Double Boiled Sea Whelk with Spare Ribs and Chinese Yam (128k). The portion of the soup here can serve two to four people. This soup is believed to improve your eyesight, maintains youthfulness, and nourishes your lungs and kidneys. One important piece of information; the broth for the soups is made with pork bones. We also shared some Crispy Fried Seafood Rolls in Wasabi Mayo Sauce (48k) and Crisp Fried Crystal Prawns in Wasabi Mayo Sauce (78k). The sauce really gives these dishes an appetizing lift. The Sautéed Asparagus with Spicy Homemade Sauce (88k) was next on the list. The belacanlike sauce adds a certain familiarity to this dish. My pork-eating friends enjoyed their Stewed Pork Belly served with Lotus Bun (15k) and Braised Vermicelli with Pork Trotters (88k), but my personal pick was the wonderful Sautéed Venison with Ginger and Spring Onions (88k). The meat is very lean and tender. It is a rare occasion that I get to eat deer meat, and I really enjoyed this dish very much. My order of the Lychee Mojito Iced Tea (23k) was really refreshing. The signature desserts here are truly yummy indeed. We liked the Durian Pancake (35k) and Mango Sago (25k). But our favorite was the Chilled Lemongrass Jelly with Lemonade (22k). Highly recommended. It was a good get together over a great selection of dishes, drinks, and desserts. We enjoyed our little tasty trip to China at Paradise Inn. This is one solid addition to Jakarta’s culinary scene. (Budi Iskandar)

in classical music world, but their existence is evident. The famous Cappella Amadeus music school has recently created one of the newest brass ensembles in town called Amadeus Brass. Founded by the accomplished violinist Grace Sudargo a few decades ago, Cappella Amadeus is renowned as a school that produces great string players. The fact that the school is now going to do brass ensembles is like a breath of fresh air.

As an ensemble type, the brass ensemble is very flexible. They pretty much can play a wide range of musical genres from madrigals to jazz and everything in between. Not only that, but the instrumentation for this ensemble is quite flexible and can be substituted. For instance, trumpets will double on piccolo trumpets and flugelhorns, or a horn can be replaced by trombone etc.

Collaborated with the Goethe Institute who helped to donate some musical instruments, Amadeus Brass is really serious in rehearsing and establishing themselves as one of the prominent brass ensembles in Indonesia. With the help of Goethe Institute who brought them a special teacher and an accomplished trumpet player: Christian Syperek, Amadeus Brass already had two preliminary concerts last May and November 2011.

In Indonesia, the history of the brass ensemble was started in the 19th century and initiated by a Dutchman named Augustijn Michiels or Mayor Jantje of Citeureup (an area in West Java). This kind of ensemble was later assimilated to the local culture and adopted to be one of the Betawinese original cultures called Tanjidor. In this version of the brass ensemble, they have a piston, trombone, clarinet, tenor saxophone, bass saxophone, drums, cymbals and side drums. Currently, there are more and more brass ensembles around Indonesia. Though they are not enjoying much popularity like the others

Now with their current teacher and a horn player: Jan Leukefeld, Goethe Institute and Amadeus Brass is once again going to present us with their first solo concert without any strings accompaniment. Make sure not to miss Amadeus Brass up coming performance at Goethe Institute on July 30th. here are a lot of varieties in the classical music world. However, one of the most powerful yet rarely performed is none other then the brass ensemble. Also known as a brass quintet, this branch of classical music is actually a five-piece musical ensemble composed of brass instruments. The most common instrumentation is two trumpets or cornets, one horn, one trombone or euphonium/ baritone horn, and one tuba or bass trombone.

Nyatanya di www.blitzmegaplex.com dan www.21cineplex.com? Some people might or might not find it hard to accept reality. A protagonist rewrites the memories in his brain. Three guys choose to defend the reality they live in. A woman gets stuck in between a reality and a hallucination. Reality cross-check? Go to www.blitzmegaplex.com and www.21cineplex.com!

Total Recall Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi. Director: Len Wiseman. Writers: Kurt Wimmer, Mark Bomback. Cast: Colin Farrell, Kate Beckinsale, Jessica Biel, Bill Nighy, Ethan Hawke, John Cho. Like the original 1990 film starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, a factory worker visits Rekall – a facility center that provides its clients with implanted fake memories of a different life or role they’d like to lead. He discovers that he is a super spy on the run when the procedure goes wrong. From the writer of the “Underworld” series, this film has some pretty giant shoes to fill as it may seem entirely too soon to feature a remake of the 1990 classic of the same name. Expect great sci-fi action and a very trippy story line.

Three Stooges Comedy. Writers & Directors: Bobby Farrelly, Peter Farrelly. Cast: Sean Hayes, Will Sasso, Chris Diamantopoulus, Jane Lynch, Sofia Vergara, Jennifer Hudson.

See the cast? Yep, all veteran TV sitcom actors and actresses like Sean Hayes as Jack in Will & Grace, Jance Lynch as Sue Sylvester from Glee are put together by writer-director duo Bobby and Peter Farrely, better known as the Farrely Brothers, to serve you a simple story-driven comedy. The story itself is quite original with three nun-raised men trying to save their childhood orphanage only to stumble into a murder plot and somehow wind up in a reality TV show. Sure to be another wacky Farrely Brothers plot lined with ridiculous gags.

Silent House Horror, Mystery, Thriller. Directors: Chris Kentis, Laura Lau. Writer: Laura Lau. From the same couple who brought you the hit indie film Open Water back in 2003 are now remaking a Paraguayan horrormystery. Set at a secluded lake house, one uninterrupted long shot which appears to be in real time. The inventive camera work depicts a woman terrorized as she cleans up a property with her father and uncle. Fear of the unknown is the hallmark of the scariest of movies so we shall reveal no more...

Soundbox Beach Life eading north of Monas always arrives with a moment’s apprehension. You never know what’s going to happen generally in this town but going north is guaranteed to unravel a few feathers. French DJs JIDAX were in the house, fourth floor to be precise, and just as we arrived, they were taking to the decks. Cameras flashing all around the stage as the guys started up a three hour set that began with an almost commercial leaning with twists and turns, later arriving into a deeper progressive zone that had every head in the house nodding and swaying in the beachside themed ambience. One part of JIDAX, Le Jide was standing up on the decks a few times belting out his signature “Let me see your hands up high” and “This is the best club in the world” and right then, he wouldn’t have been too far wrong. Great set, great place, and memorable moments.

you head north out of Legian on the main road through Seminyak you may hear the sound of lively Jazz music, and the happy hubbub of friendly chatter amongst friends drifting across the open-fronted terrace of Mannekepis bistro.Warm wooden furnishings across the two storey premises and a cosy, buzzing feel complement the regular live music, bustling atmosphere and of course, scrumptious cuisine. Grab a table near the bar area downstairs for a view of the stage or head upstairs for a game of pool and admire the breezy balcony area looking down over Jalan Seminyak. The subtly updated menu courtesy of new Finnish Executive Chef Pasi Huuskois is pleasingly diverse, with a delicious mix of Belgian specialities and international dishes. The list of starters is peppered with such European classics as lobster bisque served with cream and tarragon, and French onion soup with cheese croutons as well as a few Indonesian favourites like soto ayam. A brand new wine list (one of the most extensive you’ll find this side of Seminyak I’m told) provides a wide selection of wines by the glass that are beyond the standard Cabernet Sauvignons found in most places. Meanwhile an all new cocktail menu points me toward a refreshing Avalon Concoction (65k++), which is a mix of vodka, fresh apple juice and ginger ale, twisted with melon and cucumber shavings.

including tenderloins and sirloins served with a choice of accompanying sauces cooked à la minute, as well as burgers and the steak tartare. I opt for the interestingly named ‘Kill the Cook’ (165k++), which is 200g of imported Aussie tenderloin topped with two big onion rings and battered cheese sticks with sautéed veggies and a rich, herby sauce on the side. Dessert is, as you’d expect from a European bistro, an indulgent affair with Crème Brulée, Belgian waffles with vanilla and chocolate sauce and New York Cheesecake topping the sweet stakes. For my dessert the waiter recommends the all-new Oreo Parfait (45k++) which is quite simply a plate of chocolatey, gooey perfection.

Blackbox party

T

he Black Box Party at Rooftop 88 really lived up to its billing. It took a little bit of time for the party to pick up, but when it did, at around 12, it exploded. The crowd was immediately blown away when international performers like Triple Jem and The Joy Brothers took turns to man the decks. By the time the party was peaking at 2am everybody had gone ape in the decidely aviation, industrial outdoor atmosphere.

he happy-techno party at Ocean27 featuring DJ Hugo Marti offered more than what was expected by its audience. First there were the dancers in colorful costumes doing some exotic numbers that got the punters all riled up. Then the air turned jazzy when a live saxophone, guitar, and percussion complemented performances by DJ Hugo Marti and friends.

Potato Head Summer Opening Party 2012

www.beatmag.com

A

s far as summer parties go, Potato Head set the bar pretty damn high with their Summer Opening Party. The party opened with support from Stevie-G and Lady Flic on a smaller stage to the side, who filled the festive daytime atmosphere with some mighty fine tunes. But it was all just prelude to the main event, Fatboy Slim! The visuals were immaculate and the lights looked they came from the DJ god’s themselves, as for the sound, well; everybody had to bounce to those all too familiar tracks. The crowd was wild and positively energetic and with more shows like this, the world would probably be a better place. Additional support by Stuart Mac and Dipha only made an already wicked night better.
