Stuart Silver

Date: Thurs 15th March Doors: 7.30pm Tickets: £8 (£6 concessions)

Date: Thurs 22nd March Doors: 7.30pm Tickets: £8 (£6 concessions)

Edinburgh Spotlight Best Comedy Show 2010 winners take you on an energetic, hilarious rampage through the placid Cambridgeshire village of Meldreth. Against an exhilarating soundtrack, chaos bubbles in the church tearooms and revolution leaks from under the post office door. Farm parks and yoghurt become sources of emotional break downs and along the way new rules are created, bent, broken and ignored in a vain attempt to take control of the situation.

An intimate, humorous, tragi-ballad. A conversational and textually rich epic journey where Stuart seeks to get a hold on what life is really about, under the crush of great advice. With ukulele when you least expect it. And when you expect it. Bringing us his first solo show after a 10 year Perrier Award-winning, BAFTA nominated partnership with Kim Noble, a technically stripped back, musical Stuart Silver returns to The Basement with his new criticallyacclaimed show.

Police Dog Hogan are a high-energy and eclectic seven-piece, combining fiddle, banjo, mandolin, bass, drums and guitars with knockout four-part harmonies in an exuberant medley of country, pop, folk, and rocking urban bluegrass. Veteran DJ Johnnie Walker describes their gigs as “a really good, fun time”, with songs that veer from the wistful and poetic to flat-out, foot-stomping tales of doomed barbecues, French mustard and falling in love on a Tennessee highway.

Sitting somewhere between a guerrilla cinema and pop-up gig is the audiovisual medley of The Basement’s newest regular night. Jukebox Fury features a live B-movie soundtrack project setting the scene, and a score of eclectic Brighton musicians guiding you through the plot’s twist and turns. DOUBLE BILL

I LIKE THE WAY YOU WEAR YOUR HAIR

Date: Wed 18th April Doors: 7.30pm Tickets: £8 (£6 concessions)

Greg Wohead Welcome to Greg’s bedroom in Mesquite, Texas, 1998. The Cranberries’ No Need to Argue is on repeat, there’s a pile of dirty laundry in the corner and he can’t stop thinking about Sara. In this performance Greg tells you—from the perspective of a geeky teenager—the true story of the night he took a chance. I like the way you wear your hair is a solo show about stomach butterflies, private thoughts and marching band conveyed through simple storytelling and projected drawings.

SUPERBARD & THE SEXY QUANTUM STORIES Superbard From a young age, Superbard was told of the time when he would be sent back to the past, to heal the world through storytelling. He would build the future utopia. However, when at the age of 24 he and his dog Enoc were sent back in a ceremony of fanfares that had higher television figures than the royal wedding, he realised that the history books were very good at the ‘what happened’, but they had a curious lack of detail as to the ‘how’. He’s fairly sure that his second Edinburgh hit show, Superbard and The Sexy Quantum Stories is not the answer.

Dates: Thus 17th May Starts: 8.30pm Tickets: £8 or 2 east.by.south.east shows for £14

After sneaking downstairs to tape the film Predator one night, five-year-old Andy and his brother began creating their own version. Unfortunately they never finished what they started. Now, with your help and imagination, Andy gets to complete this 20 year work-in-progress, recreating this sci-fi action classic by playing with remote control cars, action men and puppets.

Jess is stuck. Her lifelong friend, Chris, can’t help. And the world is falling apart. Luckily Jess and Chris have a cooler full of beer, a goofy rapport, and a sincere desire to make you, the audience, happy. Or so they claim… This is a hilarious and unsettling examination of what it means to be an unwitting consumer in a hyper communicative world.

Lee Meir’s Translation Included is a witty, touching solo in which daily gestures are transformed into a rich language of movement infecting the whole body. This event is part of an on-going partnership between The Basement and South East Dance, exploring fertile territories that lie in between the disciplines of dance and contemporary performance.

By introducing memory tasks and techniques and applying them to the stage situation, the audience is systematically trained to remember – hopefully forever. I Guess If The Stage Exploded... draws on presence and sight, on what happens in our brain when we create memories, and our urge to be special and commemorated.

In this witty and engaging ode to commerce and desire the theatre becomes an arena of free trade and adventure, a space between voyeurism and participation. Asking what we want and what we would be prepared to gamble to get it, it provides a poignant meditation on the relative values of cold hard cash, performance and human experience. This is a partnership between Gessnerallee, Zurich and The Basement, Brighton facilitating the international exchange of new performance. PERFORMANCE
