welcome east.by.south.east

This spring we are delighted to present The Basement’s 10th season of contemporary performance. It is five years since the newly developed venue opened up its doors, inviting audiences to venture underground and embrace the unexpected. Our mission was clear: to present the most thrilling and ground-breaking contemporary performance around and support the artists that make it. As the organisation has grown and developed, we have continued to nurture the most promising early career artists. This season features many artists at the very start of their careers as well as those growing in ambition and reputation. Since 2008 The Basement has increasingly become a gateway for international performance, bringing many truly exceptional artists to the UK, often for the first time. We celebrate our 10th season with a particularly rich selection of international work, including many UK premieres. This season we offer workshops led by two outstanding performance makers - Stacy Makishi and Richard Layzell. We continue to support the creation of new work through our commissioning and residency programmes.

The Roddick Foundation

Finally, I would like to thank every one who has made the last 10 seasons such an amazing journey, from the artists who so brilliantly and uncompromisingly put themselves on the line, to the partners, collaborators and funders that enrich the programme and make it possible, and our brilliant audiences, who time after time, take a leap of faith and share in those amazing moments of connection. If you have never visited The Basement before we warmly invite you to join us for our most exciting season of work ever.

RED HERRING Diederik Peeters (Belgium) Diederik Peeters is afraid. He has a morbid fear of germs and contamination. He is terrified of heights, petrified of ghosts and scared by conspiracies. He suffers from severe paranoia, and is tormented – last but not least – by the holy terror of failing. The origin of these fears: a niggling barrage of sound abusing his ears and mind from off stage. In Red Herring Peeters is victim to the comical potential of irrational fears. Drenched in cold sweat he tries to overcome the ridiculousness of his obsessional and paranoid traits. It is a duet for performer and soundtrack, disguised as a solo, that tries to find out whether Buñuel was right when he stated that ‘sound stimulates the imagination more than image.’ ‘Pastiches of horror films, absurd stories and thoughts are all intertwined as if six different movies are running at the same time here. In its own very funny way Red Herring offers a striking picture of the confusion you experience in a world that is persistently bombarding you with stimuli without beginning, end or cohesion.’ Pieter T’Jonck, De Morgen

FORECASTING 1er Stratagème (FRANCE) An intriguing hybrid experience, a space-time suspended between two parallel systems of perception. In Forecasting Barbara Matijević and Giuseppe Chico develop a dizzying friction between images and a living body. A collision between two worlds that capture the body of the performer in a paradoxical situation. Barbara Matijević interacts with body size images on a screen. The images are carefully selected amateur videos taken from the world’s largest video-sharing website: YouTube. During the performance she converses “physically” with the images and the bodies and objects on the screen become part of her own body. Her body doubles, it becomes both itself and the others, it is here and elsewhere at the same time, present and absent, actor and spectator. In this zone of indeterminacy, floating in the banality of everyday situations, loom the first hints of how technology has redefined our understanding of narratives and culture, of information-sharing and community. Forecasting is the third part of the performance trilogy Theory of the performance to come or the only way to avoid the massacre is to become its authors?, created by Barbara Matijević and Giuseppe Chico (the first parts being I am 1984 and Tracks).

IT’S GOING TO GET WORSE AND WORSE AND WORSE, MY FRIEND Lisbeth Gruwez / Voetvolk vzw (Belgium) A speech can be a mighty weapon. Throughout the centuries it has enthused countless masses and galvanized them into action, for better or for worse. It has unleashed revolutions and fuelled wars. Just by the power of words. But a speech does not only enthuse the hearers, often it also transposes the speaker into a state of trance. Then he loses himself in a stream of words, in an obsessive, ecstatic way of speaking. The power of a speech often depends on the trance of the speaker. In It’s Going to Get Worse and Worse and Worse, My Friend Lisbeth Gruwez dances the trance of that ecstatic speechifying. In the process, she takes advantage of fragments from a speech by the ultraconservative American televangelist Jimmy Swaggart. Initially the parlance is friendly and pacifying, but from his compulsive desire to persuade transpires growing despair. Eventually it exposes its deepest nature: violence. Rarely have image, movement, light and sound invigorated each other so powerfully. This turns It’s Going to Get Worse and Worse and Worse, My Friend into a subtle masterpiece that has managed to captivate audiences around the world into a nearly magical yet disturbing state.

THE FATHER, THE SON & THE HOLY FEAST Sadettin KirmiziyÜz (NETHERLANDS) In November 2010 Sadettin Kırmızıyüz made the biggest journey of his life so far. Together with his father he went on a pilgrimage, the Hadj, to Mecca, to continue the family’s tradition. With his father as guide, he is inaugurated in this century-old ritual. Drawing on the experiences of this striking journey, Sadettin Kırmızıyüz presents a performance about fathers and sons, belief and disbelief, Abraham, Isaac, Mohammed, God and Allah. This performance offers a wry reflection on a holy road trip in which everything is true and anything goes.

The Father, the Son and the Holy Feast is the second performance of four in which Sadettin Kırmızıyüz explores social issues of religion, double passports and migration. The current debates about multiculturalism and migration in the Netherlands and his personal situation as a son of a migrant form the foundation of his theatrical work. ‘Kırmızıyüz energetically tells about the Hadj with his father, an intense confrontation with his roots… Kırmızıyüz is a great story teller. After you leave you have the feeling that you have been to Mecca yourself without knowing.’ Annette Embrechts, de Vokskrant

TABLE MANNERS (UK)

Welcome. Take a seat. Have some wine. Make nervous eye contact with your fellow dinner guests. Join us on a trip to the end of etiquette. Three performances explore the rituals of food and dining that enshrine our social hierarchies and hang-ups. What happens when the manners that separate us from the animals crumble before our eyes?

Please note: there will be no toilet break throughout the 2 hour experience, all bags and coats must be left in the secure cloakroom Image Credit: Christa Holka

Hunt & Darton offer a piquante entrée to this intimate experience, with a sharp tang of embarrassment and a melange of the ridiculous. For the main course, Future Ruin’s highly acclaimed black comedy Exterminating Angel serves up a shocking insight into the darkness that lurks beneath the casual veneer of a dinner party where all logic gradually disintegrates. Finally, The Honest Crowd offer Glasshouse a snappy, surrealist dessert of fractured language and suburban hysteria.

VOLCANO Clerke and Joy (UK) This is a show about eruption and tension and release and geology and human beings and a pilot and the Righteous Brothers’ Unchained Melody. It is funny and deadly serious. And it’s about letting go, because sometimes you’ve just got to get it out.

FRI 10th MAY BAR OPENS 6:30PM SHOW STARTS 7:30PM £10

Part performance, part lecture, part school science experiment, Volcano follows the story of a pilot’s personal eruption whilst grounded during the Eyjafjallajökull ash cloud in April 2010. It uses lo-fi props to recreate gigantic events, and gigantic events to illuminate small lives with pathos and a deep sense of life’s absurdity. Clerke and Joy combine the trashy world of pop culture and international media with global events; they respond to the apocalyptic and sublime through the lens of the everyday.

YOUR BROTHER. REMEMBER? Zachary Oberzan (USA) An elaborate experiment with the concept of Beforeand-After photographs, Your Brother. Remember? splices and dices home videos, Hollywood film footage and live performance. As kids in rural America, Zachary and his older brother Gator loved making parodies of their favourite films, most notably Jean-Claude Van Damme’s karate opus Kickboxer, and the notorious cult film Faces of Death. Then twenty years passed. Just as in Mr. Van Damme’s life, the simple childhood desire for love gets confused with fame, drugs and ambition. Estranged from his family, Zack returned to his childhood home to re-create these films, shot for shot, but now seen through a twenty-year lens of emotional and physical wear and tear. One brother became an actor. The other selfdestructed. Which is which? How different are these lives? Could this story have turned out the other way around? Maybe…

BOOK BURNING Pieter De Buysser & Hans Op de Beeck (Belgium) Hans created an object. Pieter wrote a story and together they made a show. Book Burning is a cross between a blood-curdling tale and a risky road movie. An enigmatic trunk undergoes a remarkable metamorphosis, revealing landscapes and visions from the past. A man in a suit has a story to tell: a contemporary fable of personal freedom, feeling and resistance. Two worlds unfold; separate but gradually interweaving to create a richly poetic universe that is at once personal and political. Book Burning is a compelling and atmospheric meditation on democracy and freedom, communication and utopia, the need to create new narratives and challenge authority. But the spectre of the totalitarian book burnings of the past loom heavily over proceedings.

Over the course of 2013, The Basement is delighted to be working with Thomas Frank from Brut in Vienna, Kristof Blom from Campo in Ghent and a group of seven experienced and influential performance programmers and producers from across the UK and Ireland. The UK group, Matt Burman (Warwick Arts Centre), Helen Cole (InBetween Time), Matt Fenton (LICA), Emma Gladstone (Sadler’s Wells), Roise Goan (Dublin Fringe), David Micklem (independent producer) and Jackie Wylie (The Arches, Glasgow) will undertake two research trips to the European venues, exploring new models of creative and critical support for the development of new performance. The first research trip, to Brut in March will feature a packed schedule of presentations, discussions and sharings of works-in-progress from leading international dramaturges, producers and artists including Stefanie Carp (Vienna Festwochen), Judith Staudinger & Andrea Salzmann (Dramaturges of Doris Uhlich), Sandra Noeth (dance dramaturge at Tanzquartier Wien), Kerstin Schroth (producer & dramaturge of Gerald Kurdian), Philippe Riera (Artistic Director, Superamas). This exploratory first trip will provide insight and inspiration for the strategic development of the landscape of contemporary theatre in the UK. The participating group may evolve and change over time to embrace a wide range of voices with a commitment to developing new performance practices. The second research trip to Campo, Ghent will take place in October.
