Welcome Every summer, The Banff Centre welcomes hundreds of artists from around the world to participate in programs designed by our artistic team and world-class guest artists. These programs provide extraordinary opportunities for the artists and for you, our audience, to see and enjoy the work they create here. We have exciting new programs and performances in dance, opera, and music on offer this summer including a couple of artistic surprises for your viewing pleasure! This summer’s Shaw Amphitheatre series comes, of course, with extraordinary views of the Bow Valley and a rich landscape of Canadian music including Buffy SainteMarie, Randy Bachman, and A Tribe Called Red. Over the Canada Day long weekend, Brass legends Jens Lindemann, EmilieClaire Barlow, and Tommy Banks present everything from Broadway, big band hits to intimate jazz nights. Ground-breaking opera returns with a Mozart murder mystery in partnership with Against the Grain Theatre, providing an immersive and mysterious experience for lucky audience members in No One’s Safe. Benjamin Britten’s operatic masterpiece, The Rape of Lucretia, will also be hauntingly re-told with a chamber orchestra. Meanwhile, across campus in Walter Phillips Gallery, Israeli artist Yael Bartana’s acclaimed cinematic work Inferno will be exhibited in Canada for the first time.

We delve into exciting new territory with showings of a work in progress by the exceptionally talented choreographer Fernando Melo, working with artists from a brand new Creative Gesture contemporary dance program. And the drama of the glorious, internationally-renowned Banff International String Quartet Competition returns this year. Among the extraordinary performances of classical and contemporary work, you will hear the premiere of a brand new commission from Zosha Di Castri and a hip-hop, classical mixup from the Afiara String Quartet and DJ Skratch Bastid. We look forward to welcoming you to The Banff Centre on Sleeping Buffalo Mountain in Treaty 7 Territory, home of the Blackfoot, Stoney Nakoda and Tsuut’iina Nations. I hope to see you soon!

BANFF CENTRE TALKS: RECONCILIATION AND ENTANGLEMENT WITH JOHN BORROWS As Indigenous peoples work towards reconciliation they are both strengthened and challenged by their entanglements with others. Anishinaabe stories and teachings will be shared. John Borrows is a lawyer and author who currently holds the Canada Research Chair in Indigenous Law and Nexen Chair in Indigenous Leadership. Celebrate National Aboriginal Day across two days of inspiring events focusing on Inuit culture, artistry, and Arctic games. ARCTIC GAMES AND INUIT CULTURE WITH JOHNNY ISSALUK AND PAMYUA Actor, athlete, and community leader Johnny Issaluk (Nunavut) demonstrates the agility, strength, and endurance of traditional Arctic games. Following a brief intermission, the Yupik/Inuit musical group Pamyua (Alaska/Greenlandic Inuit) showcase traditional Yupik, Inuit, and Greenlandic songs with a modern spin. BANFF MOUNTAIN FILM AND BOOK FESTIVAL SCREENING: SURVIVAL PRAYER Benjamin Greené’s Survival Prayer is a sensitive portrayal of life on Haida Gwaii, a remote mountainous archipelago at the edge of Canada’s Pacific Coast and an exploration of the importance of language to Haida culture. August Events Jazz Celebrated pianist and composer Vijay Iyer returns to lead the 44th Banff International Workshop in Jazz and Creative Music. An annual gathering of established and emerging talents from around the world, Vijay is joined by trumpet and santur player Amir ElSaffar, harmonicist Grégoire Maret, flautist Nicole Mitchell, trumpetist Jason Palmer, drummers Ralph Peterson and Tyshawn Sorey, saxophonist Gary Thomas, and many others.

Visit. Banff Centre Box Office Eric Harvie Theatre Lobby Tuesday – Saturday 12 – 5 p.m. On ticketed event days, the box office will remain open until 30 minutes after the event start time and will open at least two hours prior to ticketed performances scheduled on a Sunday, Monday, or holiday.
Additional processing fees apply; $2 per ticket to a maximum of $16 per order.
Tickets are non-refundable. Where permitted, Banff Centre tickets may be exchanged within the same series up to 24 hours prior to the performance; fees may apply. Regardless of age, all audience members must have a ticket. We strongly advise that infants younger than one not attend performances for the enjoyment of the rest of the audience, and we generally recommend that audience members be four years of age or older in order for everyone to fully enjoy the performance. Events in The Club are recommended for ages 14 and over. For events in the Shaw Amphitheatre, children under the age of two are admitted free without a ticket.
