Showcasing the finest in international classical music

Banff International String Quartet Festival is a three day festival, borne out of the Banff International String Quartet Competition. Like the competition, it showcases the finest in international classical music to audiences through a completely immersive experience.

Since 1983 the competition has celebrated the art of chamber music while providing unparalleled career support for emerging string quartets. Intended as a one-time special event, the first competition was held in 1983 to mark Banff Centre’s 50th anniversary.

The outstanding success of the first competition inspired organizers to make this a triennial event. Across 14 concerts, quartets play for a distinguished jury, an eager audience, and for each other in a quest to win this prestigious international music competition. The festival, held in competition off years, features competition alumni alongside special guests exploring repertoire from across the centuries.

WELCOME

Welcome to the 5th Banff International String Quartet Festival!

Created in 2017, BISQFest grew out of the phenomenal success of the triennial Banff International String Quartet Competition (BISQC). Set against the backdrop of the stunning Rocky Mountains, BISQFest is an immersive experience held over the span of three days, featuring live concerts, movie screenings, and artists’ talks. Banff Centre is excited to welcome over two dozen celebrated artists from North America and Europe to share some of the finest international classical music at our home on the side of Sacred Buffalo Guardian Mountain.

Barry Shiffman, Director of the Banff International String Quartet Competition and Festival, has assembled a roster of brilliant musicians from around the world who have descended on Banff to create, perform, and celebrate the incredible riches of the chamber music repertoire. We are delighted that several performances this weekend will feature past laureates of the competition, alongside many special guests.

This year Banff Centre is celebrating our 90th anniversary. We are proud of our history and commitment to being an extraordinary educational institution where art and creativity thrive. This is a place where artists of all disciplines are acknowledged for who they truly are–entrepreneurs and talented professionals in pursuit of transformational outcomes.

A warm welcome to Banff Centre for BISQFest 2023! Our joyous weekend celebrates the art of chamber music and connection to community.

With a roster of musicians anchored by four of my favorite string quartets, we have built a festival that is a much-needed feast of artistic inspiration. From our many concerts to our film screenings and artists talks, I invite you to fully immerse yourselves in the rich creative space of the generous festival offerings.

This year we pay tribute to Geoff Nuttall (1965-2022), beloved first violinist of the St. Lawrence Quartet. In a staging by the award-winning actor/director Alon Nashman you’ll experience a new presentation of Haydn’s Seven Last Words of Christ.

To the many people that have provided the necessary financial support of BISQFest, notably lead funder David Lyons through Sir Jack Lyons Charitable Trust and our anonymous funder, you have my most profound thanks. DIRECTOR

Barry Shiffman enjoys a diverse career as a musician, educator, and administrator. He was co-founder of the St. Lawrence String Quartet (SLSQ) and currently serves as both the Associate Dean and Director of Chamber Music at Glenn Gould School, and Director of the Phil and Eli Taylor Performance Academy for Young Artists at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto.

During his 17 years with the SLSQ he appeared in over 2,000 concerts in venues around the globe, and recorded several critically acclaimed discs under an exclusive contract with EMI Classics. While with SLSQ, Shiffman served as artist-inresidence at Stanford University from 1998 to 2006 and as visiting artist at the University of Toronto from 1995 to 2006. Shiffman has also served in numerous roles at Banff Centre, including Director of Music Programs (2006-2010), Artistic Director of Summer Classical Music Programs (2010-2016), and Director of the Banff International String Quartet Competition since 2006. During his tenure at Banff Centre he introduced new programming in classical music performance, composition, popular music, and jazz and oversaw the dramatic growth of the Banff International String Quartet Competition, including the successful launch of the Banff Centre International String Quartet Festival in 2017.

In 2018, Shiffman was appointed Artistic Director of Rockport Music in Massachusetts, overseeing all classical programming for the organization including a fiveweek summer chamber music

festival at the venerable Shalin Liu Performance Center. From 2009-2017, he was Executive Artistic Director of Music in the Morning Concert Society in Vancouver. A sought-after juror, he has served on the violin jury of the Tchaikovsky and Montreal Violin

Competitions, and the String Quartet Competitions of London Wigmore Hall, Lyon, and Geneva.

Shiffman received his formal studies at the Royal Conservatory in Toronto, University of Toronto, Utrecht Conservatory, Hartt School of Music, Juilliard School, and Yale University. Summer studies included Banff Centre, Tanglewood, and Aspen. He is also the recipient of the Longy School’s Nadia Boulanger Prize for Excellence in the Art of Teaching, and an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Calgary.

Viano Quartet

The Viano Quartet are one of the most sought-after performing young ensembles today and will be in-residence at the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center Bowers Program from 2024-2027. Since winning First Prize at the 2019 Banff International String Quartet Competition, they have traveled to nearly every major city across the globe, captivating audiences in New York, London, Berlin, Vancouver, Paris, Beijing, Lucerne, and Los Angeles. The quartet was named the inaugural June Goldsmith Quartet-inResidence for the Music in the Morning series in Vancouver until 2025, where their focus will be to commission new works and lead extensive community engagement initiatives. The quartet has also held residencies at the Curtis Institute, Colburn Conservatory, Northern Michigan University, and Meadows School of the Arts at Southern Methodist University. The Viano Quartet’s chief mentors include faculty of the Curtis Institute and Colburn Conservatory, as well as members of the Dover, Guarneri, and Tokyo string quartets. The quartet’s name was created to describe the four individual instruments playing together both harmony and melody, creating a unified instrument called the “Viano”.

Four musicians with equally stellar pedigrees formed the New Orford String Quartet with the goal of developing a new model for a touring quartet. Their concept – to bring four elite orchestral leaders and soloists together on a regular basis over many years to perform chamber music at the highest level – has resulted in a quartet that maintains a remarkably fresh perspective while bringing a palpable sense of joy to each performance.

The quartet has seen astonishing success, giving annual concerts for national CBC broadcasts and receiving unanimous critical acclaim, including two Opus Awards for Concert of the Year, and a 2017 JUNO Award for Best Classical Album.

The quartet is dedicated to promoting Canadian works, both new commissions and neglected repertoire from the previous century. Their projects have included performances of major Canadian string quartets from the 20th century including works by Glenn Gould, Sir Ernest MacMillan, Jacques Hétu, R. Murray Schafer, and Claude Vivier, as well as commissions of new works from composers such as Francois Dompierre, Gary Kulesha, Airat Ichmouratov and Tim Brady.

The string quartet, founded in Berlin in 2019, framed by brothers Jonathan and Lukas Schwarz, with Amelie Wallner and Mayu Konoe providing the middle voices. In the summer of 2021, the Leonkoro Quartett became the youngest quartet to be awarded 2nd prize (the 1st prize was not awarded) and the coveted Audience Prize at Premio Paolo Borciani. That summer they also won 1st prize in the Chamber Music Competition of the Alice Samter Foundation. The year 2022 garnered the quartet many awards: the Jürgen Ponto Foundation Music Prize, the MERITO string Quartet Award, 1st prize at the International String Quartet Competition at Wigmore Hall London, the 1st prize at Quatuor à Bordeaux Competition and they were appointed to the prestigious BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artists program. The quartet has been mentored by Heime Müller at the Musikhochschule Lübeck, Günter Pichler of the Alban Berg Quartet, members of the Artemis Quartet as well as from Alfred Brendel. The Leonkoro Quartett is a Pirastro Artist and Henle Library App Ambassador.

Joined together from Israel, Korea-Canada, Saint Lucia, and the USA, the Dior Quartet is the Quartet-in-Residence at the Glenn Gould School, Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto, Canada. Winners of the 2023 Concert Artists Guild Victor Elmaleh Competition, the quartet formed in Fall 2018 at the Jacobs School of Music, Indiana University under the Pacifica Quartet. They are Silver prize winners of the 2021 Chesapeake Chamber Music Competition, quarterfinalists of the 2022 Banff International String Quartet Competition and 2021 Bartok Competition, and Bronze Medalists of the 2019 Fischoff Chamber Music Competition. The quartet has also been selected to participate in the 2023 Melbourne International Chamber Music Competition. The Dior Quartet has performed and participated in various programs and concert series in Canada, Netherlands, USA, Germany and the U.K. The repertoire and projects they pursue intersect with their multicultural backgrounds and moral values, as they seek to explore the immigrant experience through art. The quartet takes their name from the French word “D’or” which means gold.

Carmen Braden

COMPOSER

Award-winning composer and singer/ songwriter Carmen Braden is a dynamic force in the world of new music, hailing proudly from Yellowknife NWT. Carmen is a “multi-talented artist” (BK on the Scene) recognized as an “acoustic ambassador of the Canadian Subarctic” (Musicworks). She has played intimate theatres and main stage folk festivals, and smoothly jumps between genres of songwriting and composing. Her contemporary classical compositions are nationally recognized, with WCMA/ECMA awards+nominations, commissions and performances by world class ensembles and performers including the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, James Ehnes and the Canadian Chamber Choir.

“Braden’s music is clear, and it is bright...this recording is captured psychogeography.” (Whole Notefor Songs of the Invisible Summer Stars); and her songwriting: is “quirky and clever...à la Joni Mitchell” (The WholeNote - for Ravens). Carmen has released three studio albums, and works as a producer in Yellowknife, and presenter of unusual music concerts including the Longshadow Music Festival.

Michael Bridge

ACCORDION

Michael Bridge is a musical maverick. He’s a virtuoso performer on both the acoustic accordion and its 21st Century cousin, the digital accordion. His concerts capture the energy and panache of stadium rock with the elegance and discipline of chamber music.

He’s won a slew of competitions in Canada and abroad and was named one of CBC’s 30 under 30 classical musicians. He received his doctorate in accordion performance from the University of Toronto and is a Rebanks Fellow at the Glenn Gould School. He gives over 100 concerts a year as a soloist and as a member of Bridge & Wolak and Ladom Ensemble. He’s in high demand for masterclasses around the world.

Dr. Bridge embraces a musical aesthetic that is alternatively irreverent, deadly serious, meticulously prepared and completely in-the-moment. He’s at home with classical, contemporary, jazz and folk music and has premiered 53 new works.

Ultimately, he aims to make your world more bearable, beautiful and human—even if only for the length of a concert.

Alon Nashman

ACTOR

Alon Nashman is a creator, director and performer of theatre based in Tkaronto. Recent credits include directing Wajdi Mouawad’s Alphonse for tours to Ontario, BC and the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, and acting in The Breathing Hole (National Arts Centre); Birds of a Kind, Hirsch (Stratford Festival); Hamlet, All’s Well That Ends Well, Botticelli in the Fire/Sunday in Sodom*, Picasso at the Lapin Agile, THIS (Canadian Stage); Much Ado About Nothing, Forests, Scorched *, Democracy, Remnants* (Tarragon Theatre); The Wild Duck (Soulpepper); Hedda Gabler (Volcano/ Buddies in Bad Times); The Last Days of Judas Iscariot * (Birdland Theatre); Macbeth (Modern Times); and performing as Narrator/Storyteller in Tales of Two Cities (Tafelmusik). Alon has toured nationally and internationally with Kafka and Son, The Snow Queen, Charlotte: A Tri-Coloured Play with Music (Theaturtle). Ema Nikolovska

MEZZO-SOPRANO

Noted for her exceptional communication and dramatic skill across a broad range of repertoire, Ema Nikolovska was born in North Macedonia and grew up in Toronto where she studied voice with Helga Tucker and completed her undergraduate degree in violin at The Glenn Gould School. She received her Masters in Voice at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama in London, where she also completed the Opera Course. In Autumn 2020 she joined the International Opera Studio of the Berlin Staatsoper Unter den Linden where performance highlights include Henze’s Cubana, Christian Jost’s Die Arabische, and a role debut as Octavian in Der Rosenkavalier. A prolific concert artist, Ema Nikolovska has given critically acclaimed performances at the Berlin Konzerthaus, Pierre Boulez Saal, Wigmore Hall, Verbier Festival, and Toronto Summer Music Festival collaborating with Malcolm Martineau, Wolfram Rieger, Graham Johnson, Sir András Schiff, James Baillieu, Jonathan Ware, Joseph Middleton, Kunal Lahiry, Steven Philcox, and Barry Shiffman

Joel Quarrington

DOUBLE BASS

For over forty years, Joel Quarrington has served as the Principal Double Bassist for many orchestras including the Canadian Opera Company, the Toronto Symphony, Canada’s National Arts Centre Orchestra, and most recently the London Symphony Orchestra.

Born in Toronto, Joel began his formal studies of the double bass when he was thirteen. He won the Geneva International Competition and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation’s National Talent Competition.

A devoted teacher, Joel is a professor at the Conservatoire de Musique of Montreal as well as being a “Visiting Artist” at the Royal Academy of Music and he holds annual masterclasses in the summers at Quebec's Orford Arts Centre. Joel has made several solo recordings, which have won both the prestigious JUNO and Opus Prizes. From the International Society of Bassists, Joel has received a Special Recognition Award for Outstanding Solo Performance and for Outstanding Orchestral Performance.

Anna Štube

VIOLIN

17-year-old Latvian violinist Anna Štube has astounded audiences with her depth of expression and zest for the instrument throughout her international performance career devoted to sharing the compassion and humanity of music.

As a featured artist on CBC Music’s 2022 ‘30 Under 30’ roster, Anna made her solo debut at age 13 with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra after receiving the Grand Prize at the Canadian Music Competition.

A passionate chamber musician, Anna has collaborated with preeminent figures such as the legendary Kronos Quartet, Paul Katz, and Andres Diaz. She has also worked with acclaimed musicians including Noah Bendix-Balgley, Christian Tetzlaff, Midori, Mihaela Martin, and Philip Setzer.

Anna was awarded First Prize at the 2019 OSM Manulife Competition as the youngest ever winner and has made appearances at the 2022 Rockport Chamber Music Festival as well as on NPR’s ‘From The Top’ program. She currently studies at the Royal Conservatory of Music with Jonathan Crow and Barry Shiffman.

Gilles Vonsattel PIANO

Swiss-born American pianist Gilles Vonsattel is an artist of extraordinary versatility and originality. He is the recipient of an Avery Fisher Career Grant, winner of the Naumburg and Geneva competitions, and was selected for the 2016 Andrew Wolf Chamber Music Award. He has appeared with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal, San Francisco Symphony, Munich Philharmonic, Detroit Symphony, Chicago Symphony, and Philharmonisches Staatsorchester. He has also performed recitals and chamber music at Ravinia, Tokyo’s Musashino Hall, Wigmore Hall, the Lucerne Festival, Bravo! Vail, Chamber Music Northwest, the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival and Music@ Menlo. Deeply committed to the performance of contemporary music, he has premiered numerous works and worked closely with notable composers including Jörg Widmann, Heinz Holliger, Anthony Cheung, and George Benjamin. He currently makes his home in New York City. Vonsattel is Professor of Piano at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and serves on the faculty of Bard College Conservatory of Music..

Larry Weinstein FILMMAKER

Larry has been called “one of the world’s pre-eminent directors of films on musical subjects”. His 40 films range from composer portraits to operas conceived for film to verité documentaries to scripted dramas. In addition to an Oscar nomination for his debut, Making Overtures, he’s won dozens of international awards including three International Emmys and several Geminis and Canadian Screen Awards.

Most recent films include Emmynominated Dreaming of a Jewish Christmas; Propaganda: The Art of Selling Lies, and The Impossible Swim, co-directed with his daughter, Ali Weinstein.

Screened throughout the world, he’s been honoured with retrospectives including Hot Docs (Toronto), MOFFOM (Prague), DocAviv (Tel Aviv), Look of Sound (Bremen), Impara l’Arte Festival (Padova, Italy), The Havana Film Festival, and The Jakarta Film Festival. At Cannes' MIPDOC 2007, he was named “International Trailblazer” for his “creativity, originality and risk-taking and pushing the genre of documentary forward.”

Thomas Wolf AUTHOR

Thomas Wolf has had a distinguished career as musician, presenter, administrator, educator, consultant and author. A flute soloist with the Philadelphia Orchestra at the age of sixteen, he founded Bay Chamber Concerts in Rockport, Maine that same year and helped lead the organization for over five decades. He served as flutist and company manager for his Uncle Boris Goldovsky’s opera company, leading fifteen national tours and was the founding executive director of the New England Foundation for the Arts. For a number of years, he taught at Harvard University and since 1983 he has served as consultant to major cultural organizations through WolfBrown, his international consulting firm. He is the author of many books including The Nightingale’s Sonata, which will form the basis of his performance at BISQFest.

The trout

In a limpid brook the capricious trout in joyous haste darted by like an arrow. I stood on the bank in blissful peace, watching the lively fish swim in the clear brook.

An angler with his rod stood on the bank cold-bloodedly watching the fish’s contortions. As long as the water is clear, I thought, he won’t catch the trout with his rod.

But at length the thief grew impatient. Cunningly he made the brook cloudy, and in an instant his rod quivered, and the fish struggled on it. And I, my blood boiling, looked on at the cheated creature.
