Climbing Through Barriers – and Films 7:30 p.m. | Eric Harvie Theatre| $35 What if you found yourself in love with the outdoors but there was no one who looked like you or who you could relate to? What if you felt so out of place in a culture you were drawn to that you felt the outdoors wasn’t really designed for you or your family? Would you be able to reach your potential if you felt no support from your community? Climbing mentors Kai Lightner (professional climber), Mikhail Martin (Brothers of Climbing), Erynne Gilpin (Indigenous Womxn Climb) and Bethany Lebewitz (Brown Girls Climb) are working to bring diversity to climbing and they are bridging gaps so that we can celebrate an outdoor community where everyone is included. Lines on a Map 10 – 11:30 a.m. Max Bell Auditorium | $15 Author and adventurer Craig Childs has followed ancient migration routes on foot, pursuing early Pueblo passages across the Southwest and the paths of first peoples into the Americas during the late Pleistocene. He brings to Banff his latest work, Atlas of a Lost World: Travels in Ice Age America. Capturing two decades of adventure, Lines on a Map is an entertaining collection of travel journalism by renowned adventurer, writer, filmmaker, and environmentalist Frank Wolf – whose expeditions include being the first to canoe across Canada in one season, and cycling 2000 kilometres in winter from Dawson to Nome on the Yukon River.

Kate Rawles The Life Cycle
2 – 3:30 p.m. Max Bell Auditorium | $15 The era when rock climbing exploded in popularity, attracting a new generation of climbers eager to reach new heights via harder routes and faster ascents, is chronicled in Jeff Smoot’s latest work Hangdog Days. This contentious, often humorous period gave rise to sport climbing, climbing gyms, and the competitive climbing that we know today. A bamboo bike. 13,000 kilometres. Colombia to Cape Horn. That’s one mega cycling trip. Author and adventurer Kate Rawles uses the power of wild places to support action on environmental sustainability, sharing tales from the high Andes to the Atacama Desert. She is currently working on a new book and is the author of The Carbon Cycle.

In 1986, as part of a Canadian team, Sharon Wood became the first woman from the Western Hemisphere to summit Mount Everest – and the first woman in the world to do so via a new route from Tibet and without Sherpa support. Nazir Sabir, President of the Alpine Club of Pakistan, has been part of the mountain landscape his entire life. He spent most of his early climbing career scaling peaks in the Karakoram Range including four 8,000-metre peaks in Pakistan, two with Reinhold Messner. He completed a first ascent of the West/SSW Ridge on K2, and was the first Pakistani to reach the summit of Everest. He joins author and climber Geoff Powter in conversation.

Iconic shots of adventure superstars have been captured by Corey Rich for more than two decades. In his new book, he tells us the stories behind some of his favorite and most memorable images of climbers, adventurers, and skiers, including Tommy Caldwell, Beth Rodden, Lynn Hill, Kelly Slater, Bear Grylls, Alex Honnold, and Fred Beckey.

The Impossible Climb
Caroline Van Hemert 2 – 3:30 p.m. Max Bell Auditorium | $15 A search for unclimbed and unexplored rock walls has taken Mark Synnott on expeditions around the world. In his latest book The Impossible Climb, his stories of big wall adventures culminates with his friend Alex Honnold’s unprecedented, almost unimaginable 900 metre vertical climb up El Capitan without a rope. Ornithologist Caroline Van Hemert and her husband set off on a 6,400-kilometre wilderness journey from the Pacific rainforest to the Alaskan Arctic. Her latest book The Sun is a Compass, shares tales as they travel by rowboat, ski, foot, raft, and canoe, exploring northern landscapes so remote there were no maps or guidebooks to follow.

Sasha DiGiulian has spent her life on rock. Climbing since the age of six, she now has a long list of accomplishments to her name including Best Female Overall at the World Championships. She’s the first North American woman to climb 5.14d, has completed groundbreaking multi-pitch routes, and has accomplished over 30 first female ascents. Recently she completed the “Canadian Triology” – ascents of Castle Mountain, Mount Louis, and Mount Yamnuska, all 5.14 big walls in the Canadian Rockies. The World Premiere of the film The Trilogy will be followed by a presentation and on stage interview with Sasha. Presentation followed by Festival films.

Sarah Marquis – and Films 8 p.m. | Max Bell Auditorium | $35 When Sarah Marquis was eight, she left with her dog to spend the night in a cave without telling anyone – and so her journeys began. She walked over 16,000 kilometres over three years, beginning in 2010 in Siberia, across Asia and then across Australia, scrounging for water in the desert and surviving dengue fever alone in the Laos jungle. Sarah returns to Banff to share her latest walking adventure to the edge of the earth, a remote traverse of Tasmania she attempted in 2018. Presentation followed by Festival films.
Fire on the Hill – and Films 8 p.m. | Margaret Greenham Theatre | $25 Five miles south of downtown Los Angeles is a place that was, until recent years, known as the murder capital of the world. For most, South Central LA is synonymous with gang violence, drug trafficking, and high amounts of crime. Since the city’s establishment, Compton and the surrounding neighborhoods have always had a culture of Black cowboys. This film is the story of three of those cowboys and their fight to live out their vision of the West. The screening of Fire on the Hill will be followed by more festival films. 13

Andrzej Bargiel traded two table tennis paddles and a pocket knife for his first pair of wooden skis. From humble roots as one of eleven children, he became the three time Polish champion in ski mountaineering, and has skied all the highest peaks in Russia. He is renowned for his cutting-edge descents from four 8,000-metre peaks, including an impossible ski descent of K2. This fall he’ll attempt a world record speed ascent and descent of Mt. Everest. Over four days they made the first female ascent of the 2,700-metre Slovak Direct on Denali. Following their Alaskan expedition they journeyed to the Indian Himalaya where, along with Jason Thompson, they made the first ascent of the unclimbed Southwest face of Mt. Nilkath. They received a special mention at the 2018 Piolets d’Or for their innovative climb. The dynamic duo joins us on the Banff stage for a look into the tough and unrelenting world of high alpine ascents.
