“ Impossible to put this page-turner of a book down. Each lavish image is a portal into the mysterious and overlooked secrets of rocks, rivers, weather, and wildness.” – Ormsby Review, Searching for Tao Canyon

From the book Searching for Tao Canyon

THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 1 Pat Morrow and Jeremy Schmidt

Searching for Tao Canyon

Harley Rustad Big Lonely Doug

Jan Redford

Captain Reverend Bob Shepton

10 – 11:30 A.M. Max Bell Auditorium | $15

2 – 3:30 P.M. Max Bell Auditorium | $15

At a time before guidebooks and high-resolution satellite images, Pat Morrow, Jeremy Schmidt, and Art Twomey spent spring and fall seasons over ten years hauling their cameras through the wildest slot canyons they could find in the American Southwest. Together they reveal an exquisite world in Searching for Tao Canyon.

This is the story of Big Lonely Doug, a 60-metre tall Douglas fir that was saved by a logger. Author Harley Rustad reveals how this single tree is a symbol for the future of both the timber industry and the old-growth conservation movement on Vancouver Island.

End of the Rope

Mountains challenge her. Her marriage almost destroys her. And motherhood could have been the breaking point. End of the Rope is a raw climbing memoir from author Jan Redford. How she climbs out of the hole she dug for herself is as thrilling and inspiring as any of her climbs.

Judith Matloff

No Friends but the Mountains 12:30 – 1:45 P.M. Max Bell Auditorium | $15 Mountainous regions are home to only ten percent of the world’s population yet host a strikingly disproportionate share of the world’s conflicts. Traveling to conflict zones across the world, Judith Matloff sheds light on the drugs, terrorism, and instability cascading down the mountainsides that affect us all in her latest book No Friends but the Mountains. Addicted to Adventure

Trapped in ice off Greenland in a burning ship and losing a mast in the Falklands are just a few of Captain Reverend Bob Shepton’s adventures. Captain Bob is an ordained minister, now in his 80’s, who brings to Banff one-of-a-kind tales of his life spent sailing in the Arctic and making first ascents of previously inaccessible peaks.

Old Style Storytelling 4:30 P.M. Kinnear Centre, Room 203 | Free Sit back and enjoy authentic, heartfelt, and unscripted tales from some of the Rockies’ best storytellers including Rob Wood, Gillean and Tony Daffern, Brad White, and Meghan Ward. Hosted by Chic Scott. Book signings follow most presentations.

Kate Harris, Book Awards – and Films 7:30 P.M. | Eric Harvie Theatre | $35 The program begins with the 2018 Mountain Book awards. Between sneaking illegally across Tibet, studying the history of science and exploration at Oxford, and staring down a microscope for a doctorate at MIT, Kate Harris has realized that explorers are unconventional. Weaving adventure and reflection, Harris explores the wildness of a world that can never be fully mapped – as she sets off by bicycle down the Silk Road in her latest work, Lands of Lost Borders. Presentation followed by films in competition.
