Welcome
Welcome to Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity! This fall, you’re invited to experience exciting new works and ideas from some of the most engaging and curious artists, performers, and thinkers. We have so much to share with you! Over the coming months we celebrate the 40th anniversary of Walter Phillips Gallery by inviting a group of North American contemporary artists to respond to Walter Phillips’ unusual print Flying Island (1922) in the group exhibition No Visible Horizon. We take a collective moment to explore what it means to decelerate in a digital age with the exceptional author and thinker Pico Iyer during the Art of Stillness Weekend. This weekend also provides an opportunity to attend informal lectures and panel discussions, yoga workshops, and a performance of musical compositions by Arcade Fire’s Richard Reed Parry, reimagined by our musicians-in-residence and played in sync with their heart beats and breathing rhythms! Our open studios are an opportunity to experience the work of artists, performers and musicians as they explore ideas, and create new works in our residency programs, while Great Big Sea’s Séan McCann and Stars’s Torquil Campbell present new works developed here on-site in Banff.
Louise Lecavalier returns to Banff with her new work Battleground, while Bruce Cockburn, Harry Manx and James Ehnes all take to our mainstage. You can also attend two talks by remarkable women; one by Nadia Myre, the first recipient of our Walter Phillips Gallery Indigenous Commission Award, the second by the extraordinary climber and British poet, Helen Mort. We finish off the season with our Holiday celebrations and are delighted to present Jerry Granelli Trio’s iconic A Charlie Brown Christmas, alongside concerts from David Myles, Jenn Grant, the Gryphon Trio, and our musiciansin-residence. Thank you so much to our partners and supporters for helping us make this exciting season possible and I look forward to seeing you in Banff!

Discover, practice, share, and taste the art of stillness in a distracted and ever-accelerating world through conversations with worldrenowned artists, neuroscientists, and Indigenous thinkers. Featured events include an on-stage conversation with essayist and novelist Pico Iyer, a panel discussion with visual artist and Sobey Art Award-nominee Diane Borsato and choreographer Christopher House, and a performance of Music for Heart and Breath by Arcade Fire’s Richard Reed Parry.

Margaret Greenham Theatre $25 | Senior/Student $22 Child $12.50 Singer-songwriter Iskwé (“Woman” in her native language) draws upon her Cree/Dene and Irish roots to produce a sound filled with booming bass lines and heavy beats. Iskwé was recently named by the CBC as one of the “Top 10 Canadian Musicians You Need to Know.” As part of Re(Claim), an interdisciplinary music program, eight Indigenous artists from Canada, Australia and New Zealand will perform an original new short work that ‘reclaims’ the era of silent films and moving images made about Indigenous peoples. Helen Mort is a British poet and five-time winner of the Foyle Young Poets award. Mort has received an Eric Gregory Award from The Society of Authors in 2007, and won the Manchester Poetry Prize Young Writer Prize in 2008. Helen reads from her newest collection, No Map Could Show Them.
Clark Rockefeller is a real life conman of the highest order, now serving a near-life sentence in a California State prison. And iconic Stars musician and provocateur Torquil Campbell wants to try him on for size.
True Crime is a mind-twisting encounter with an artist obsessed with how we all fake it, one way or another. Created as part of a Banff Centre residency.

Eric Harvie Theatre $25 | Senior/Student $22 | Child $15 Lecavalier explores new territory in this contemporary dance freely inspired by two Italo Calvino characters, the nonexistent knight and his squire. The stage becomes a fight ring, a self-contained experimental world where a thousand battles are waged. The two antiheroes compete in a mad, unclassifiable dance full of adventures and misadventures.

Eric Harvie Theatre $35 The “Mysticssippi Blues Man” fuses eastern musical traditions with the blues, and switches effortlessly between conventional guitars, harmonica, banjo and the decidedly different Mohan Veena, a 20-stringed instrument invented by Manx’s Indian mentor, Vishwa Mohan Bhatt. Harry Manx is guest faculty for the Banff Musicians in Residence program and guest curates the Music Open Studios, on Friday, November 25. See page 17 for details.
