ON OF ART+IDEAS Welcome to the winter season at The Banff Centre! We are excited to present another thought-provoking and inspiring calendar of events.
With over 60 events taking place in winter, there truly is something for everyone. We stage bold theatre and dance from the highly-acclaimed performing arts companies Wen Wei Dance, Compagnie Marie Chouinard, Nightswimming Theatre and Ballet Kelowna. We encourage conversation through our spoken word events and talks with Gwynne Dyer and international artists and curators joining us in the Visual Arts Lecture Series. We present feature-length and short films from the Toronto International Film Festival, ImagiNATIVE festival and the Banff Mountain Film and Book Festival. We create Musical Encounters with ground-breaking classical and world musicians and musical legends including Canadian Brass, Whitehorse, Ian Tyson and Dan Mangan. By welcoming thousands of artists, leaders, mathematicians and scientists, along with tens of thousands of audience members to The Banff Centre, we celebrate conversation, creativity and ideas. With revenue raised from ticket sales, on-campus dining options, Sally Borden memberships, conferences, leadership programming and donations, your support helps to facilitate the creation of new art and new ideas year-round. We are honoured to be situated on the sacred and traditional territory in Treaty 7 First Nations, home to the Blackfoot, Stoney Nakoda and Tsuu T’ina Nations. In the heart of Banff National Park, The Banff Centre is located on Sleeping Buffalo Mountain, which holds spiritual and cultural significance for the many Indigenous nations that have travelled here throughout the millennia. The Banff Centre brings together people from around the world who believe that art and ideas can affect positive change. We look forward to welcoming you to our events this winter.

Since breaking out in 2007 as a folk singer, Dan Mangan has headed into more expansive, experimental territory, earning the JUNO Award for New Artist and Alternative Album of the year, and a cross country following along the way. Joining Dan Mangan + Blacksmith will be very special guest Hayden who has been captivating audiences worldwide with his affecting lo-fi folk-rock for over twenty years.
Focusing on songs collected by folklorist and field recording pioneer Alan Lomax, this event brings together some of North America’s most distinctive and talented roots musicians to revive, recycle and reimagine traditional music. Stella Queen of the Snow tells the story of two children as they spend the day playing in the snow. The forest, snowballs, snow angels and the mysterious white stuff itself provide fuel for their discovery of the world of winter.
A wooden fence is all that separates Calvin’s ranch and Speck’s reservation, but in many ways they are worlds apart. An unlikely friendship is struck when Calvin and Speck work together to “break” a wild horse. Calvin and Speck learn to communicate with one another across the divide of their own cultures.

Between Us is an exhibition about the various local understandings of who constitutes the “us” in the town of Banff—a community that now has a higher rate of immigration than the province and nation.
This community exhibition features work created by the participants of the 2014 Drawn to Nature classes, organized by Walter Phillips Gallery with the support of Parks Canada, Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies, and Buffalo Nations Luxton Museum. This free monthly class – where participants learned various observational sketching techniques in both drawing and painting – has seen over 200 participants of all ages and levels of experience. Celebrated film and television actress Anita Majumdar has created an audacious trio of dance-plays (Fish Eyes, Boys with Cars, Let Me Borrow That Top) that tell the coming-of-age stories of three teenage girls in small-town Canada. Inspired by so-called honour killings, hip-hop, and teenage heartache, Anita’s tour-deforce performance celebrates the joy and awkwardness of youth while slyly tackling issues of colonialism and cultural identity.
The Fish Eyes Trilogy is produced by Nightswimming with development support from The Banff Centre. Let Me Borrow That Top was co-commissioned by Nightswimming and The Banff Centre.
