TNZ Cinema:

Where Luxury Meets Convenience!

Patron to Arunachal Pradesh, the cinema multiplex operator has recently launched its property in Itanagar making it one of the only luxurious multiplexes in the state. With its dedication to provide the residents with an ultramodern and remarkable moviegoing experience the cinema theatre has soon become a crowd favourite. TNZ Cinema started began its endeavour to provide luxurious experiences to its audiences with the launch of a two-screen property in Dirang, a quaint town in Arunachal Pradesh. The people of Arunachal Pradesh would visit Guwahati for a worthwhile cinema going experience in terms of picture quality, sound, seating amenities as well as the service provided. While the state of Arunachal is known for its picturesque views, the cinema viewing opportunities in this state are on the lower side. The lack of quality cinemas allowed TNZ Cinemas to occupy the market and seize this opportunity under able guidance and leadership of Lobsang Tsering. With the launch of their Itanagar property, the cinema operator has strengthened its name and presence in the eyes of the

The auditoriums boast Volfonics 3D System and Dolby Atmos surround sound. It is equipped with an online ticketing system that allows cinegoers to conveniently pre-book their tickets and seats without having to manoeuvre the box-office.

The accessibility and convenience of the audiences are kept in mind when planning the parking spaces of the cinema property. It offers ample parking space within the cinema theatre compound itself. The cinema theatre vows to have one of the best fire safety systems integrated within the property. Given the location of the cinema property, there were few challenges in terms of architecture and design. The interior planning had to be done, considering the local history and tastes as well as the vision of the brand. The construction work was decelerated due to issues in transportation of the equipment and construction material. Post the completion of the construction, the only challenge TNZ Cinemas had to overcome was to hire skilled manpower to service the cinema theatre and to integrate their vendors. The kitchen at TNZ Cinema has been

equipped with Kitchnrama products to provide quick and efficient service to the audiences. The theatre also boasts regional and local vendors selling different food and beverage items. The menu has been crafted by a professional chef that has kept in mind

• INDIA PLEXING • to provide excellent entertainment in Pune motivated them to create a multiplex of fine standards. The ambience of the cinema theatre is not only welcoming but is so eye-catching that the audience can't stop gazing around. The seating arrangement is wholeheartedly spacious and accommodating while the sound and screen quality provides one of the best cinema experiences in Pune. The cinema theatre is known for their always-at-your-service approach. The design impact inside the cinema starts with a firm sense of entry that was aimed to create an invitation to extravagance and have the visitors fascinated to explore the interiors. The lobby reflects an air of opulence, with a dark-coloured theme. It's no surprise that gold has been associated with luxury, apart from serving as an element of indulgence it effortlessly evokes a sense of grandeur. The accent and ambient light also work in favour of the entire lobby to keep it shimmered and add an aesthetic element. The use of reflective materials for floors and walls subtly bounces off the light inside the lobby, adding itself to the decorative lighting system. In creating an immersive experience, the overall design elements truly captivate the consciousness of the patrons.

"We created such an architectural wonder in these cinemas that rightly set us apart from other exhibitors. Our ambience says a lot about ourselves, our zero-comprise attitude as well as unflinching dedication to provide the best moviegoing experience. Further, we believe that people don't just want to see big screens but also love to delight their aural faculties with impressive sounds. They also pay heed to the overall ambience, the stunning ambience wherein they would love to revel in as they have specially taken some time out of their schedule just to relax and have fun. Therefore, the ambience too has to fit the bill and that's why we've created such an ambience that makes sense." – Kuldeep Singh Sisodiya, Chief Operating Officer, Rajhans Cinemas

Every Rajhans property is designed with a peculiar set of architectural wonders. A team of highly skilled architects have worked on the most minute of details to create a great impression on the audience. The circular dome of the lobby space gives an informal look to make the visitors feel more relaxed and comfortable. The organic placement of the seating allows the user to choose and settle in their desired corner. At the same time, the well-thought high ceiling height adds to the grandness. As the height of the central ceiling has been elevated, the hanging lights protrude down to make

TM-20

September-November 2022

• INDIA PLEXING • The property had 20 existing columns of different sizes that already occupied most of the space. To tackle them, the designers created a curvilinear envelope that engulfed most of the columns and the placement of the dome allowed to rope in the various structural and aesthetic elements seamlessly. The dome's design is augmented with a series of thin metal sheets placed in a parametric algorithm that are suspended from the ceiling. These metal leaves reflect the automated colour-changing lights and form a mobile element with a sequenced throw of air from the jet nozzles. up for the lack of lighting. taken some time out of their schedule just to relax and have fun. Therefore, the ambience too has to fit the bill and that's why we've created such an ambience that makes sense."

Inside the cinema, the four different auditoriums have been designed to have separate identities, avoiding any kind of design similarity. This gives each auditorium its own uniqueness and originality. A calculated composition of automated lighting blends with a parametric themed outer membrane of acoustic paneling. This combined concept not only helps create a striking feature within the cinema but caters to an advanced acoustic performance.

Incorporating embellishing design details into the highly utilitarian walls of the theatre was one of the main challenges encountered by the designers. This was accomplished by incorporating and playing with geometrical elements that cater to the acoustical requirements of the theatre. The blank foam walls convert into accent pieces when the lights are turned on. This makes the area visually enticing while ensuring the comfort of the patrons during the intervals. The second challenge dealt with tackling multiple volumes and skewed spaces inside the cinema lobby. The designers aligned and composed a single material palette to create a seamless experience with such design extremities.

Commenting on the architectural style of Rajhans Cinemas, Kuldeep Singh Sisodiya, COO at Rajhans Cinemas states, "We created such an architectural wonder in these cinemas that rightly set us apart from other exhibitors. Our ambience says a lot about ourselves, our zero-comprise attitude as well as unflinching dedication to provide the best moviegoing experience. The patrons can indulge in quality ice-cream with Baskin Robbins or for their savoury tooth they can opt for locally famous samosas and vada pavs along with pastas, pizzas and burgers. The concession counter is fitted with Preferred Popcorn's variety of flavoured popcorn and Tastilo nachos. Pune as a city is filled with cosmopolitan residents and despite this, the dominant language remains Marathi. The cosmopolitan crowd creates a demand for Hollywood content which is readily provided by Rajhans Cinemas.

Rajhans Cinemas Greater Noida character that adds to the opulence.

Greater Noida being the main hub of the region filled with an array of cultures and people; Rajhans Cinemas was encouraged to throw open a brand-new multiplex with a difference. It is dedicated to offering uniqueness in every way possible especially with its first-ever gold class privilege in the vicinity. Rajhans Cinemas Greater Noida is not a place to experience movies alone, but it offers an immersive cinematic difference under one roof with luxury recliners and state-of-the-art technology. "The patrons can experience an immersive cinematic difference with five luxurious screens. Situated within Galaxy Diamond Plaza the property opened its doors to the audience mid last year. It has a seating capacity of 760 seats," said Khushboo Rai, DGM - Media and Communications.

Rajhans Cinemas Greater Noida is not just technically-enhanced, it is aesthetically appealing as well. Every square metre is dexterously designed by skilled interior designers giving it a magnificent feel. The entire ambience is spic and span and pleasing to the eyes. Further, what sets this cinema apart from the rest is its Prime Lounge which is plush with ultra-luxurious amenities, and profoundly provides a one-of-a-kind sheer gold class experience. The designers maintained a sleek profile and designed inspirational elements around an Art Deco

The ceiling's design at the entrance is known for being subtle. The lobby ceilings add to the dramatic flair, while the corridor ceilings act no less than a grand entrance to some palace. The classic dark theme of the cinema lobby becomes the perfect background to let the extravagant elements stand out. Eclectic-shaped chandeliers in every space from lobbies to corridors foreground themselves to break the existing sleek profile. The variety in level hampered the cohesive theme of the cinema. The levels were carefully studied and broken down to suit the overall grand volume of the interiors. The results turned out to be customised and unique in every inch of the space; this includes everything from bespoke furniture, and gold framing, to unique flooring. Lighting systems throughout the passageways function as both sources of illumination and as abstract of directional lighting. As the corridor is narrow with less floor space, the designers stuck to only two materials to avoid excessiveness. With its properties Rajhans Cinemas is on a mission to provide good entertainment to its audience as it attempts to be the torchbearer of breaking the hackneyed routine and encourages audiences to watch more movies.

close attention to the local culture and eating habits. Amongst its contemporaries INOX has an edge over its F&B options as it emphasises on going 'local.' As INOX successfully attempts to cater to the local palettes, it has introduced dishes such as Chole Kulcha, Franky and Vada Pav. With menus that 'satis-fries' the hunger of its audiences, INOX has introduced menus combo items that encourage them to try out different items at nominal costs. It presents attractive offers to the audiences as it pairs their favourite snacks and beverages for as low as INR 210. The F&B selection at INOX bears in mind the wellness and health of its patrons. To satisfy their cravings it has introduced a menu that presents snack alternatives that are health conscious but yet tasty and appetising. Few of them include Makhana and Salads, Turmeric Latte and a good old cup of Green Tea instead of sugary drinks.

• INDIA PLEXING • it reaches to a demographic that looks for a light but yet a unique snacking option. Complimentary food offers a more premium outlook to standardised food combinations.

Indian Cuisine and Quality Control When it comes to food and beverages in India, it is essential to account for the authenticity of the food, especially in terms of its quality and taste. INOX celebrates authentic Indian cuisines as it partners with ITC - Kitchens of India. The food items are curated by ITC chefs and are stored using retort packaging. With ambient storage, the products have a shelf life of 18 months. There is no additional capex on these products, and given the products are sourced through ITC, the quality of the food is maintained. Moviegoing as an activity competes with entertainment alternatives outside the walls of the cineplex.

Hence, to acquire the attention of food lovers (apart from the cinema lovers), INOX has introduced promotions such as - 'Taste of China' and food items like pizzas and barbeque sub rolls. The variety of food provided ensures that moviegoing becomes a more premium and enticing alternative than other entertainment channels.

Taking Combos to the Next Level While combos offer cost effective and tempting alternatives, combos with items complimenting each other present a better and appealing option. As INOX pairs butter croissants, brownies and doughnuts with coffees and hot chocolates,

Having an extensive and full menu offers the audience an array of options to choose from. However, the primary focus still rests on bringing the audiences to the cinema theatres. With moviegoing and movie-watching habits constantly changing, it is essential to incorporate promotional activities and gimmicks to gain the interest of the customer. One of the obvious and most effective promotional tactics is to introduce movie-based promotions that not only garner the interest of the fans, but also of those skeptical to otherwise indulge in these flicks. Making promotions more effective, INOX has introduced the concept of 'Special Days,' wherein it offers discounts on days like Popcorn Day, Valentine's Day as well as Women's Day. Another fantastic promotion idea is to club sports and movies. Sports based promotions grabs the attention of sports fans as it caters to their

• INDIA PLEXING • arena and movie fans as the offers are too tempting to resist. Historically, INOX has introduced the 'Cricket Combo,' 'Toofani Combo' and football themed combos as well. While Cricket cannot be taken away from the Indian DNA, the celebration of festivals is also synonymous with culture in India. It is therefore crucial to target audiences during these festivities, as the need for entertainment on their days off is peaked. Clubbing these offers with the local cuisines is bound to garner the interest of moviegoers as well as the foodies. A gamechanger in the F&B market is seasonal specials, as summer time calls for mango relishes, the gloomy monsoons demand a rich savoury platter with hot tea. With the introduction of season specials, INOX satiates the everchanging and demanding palettes of its audiences. It is easy to introduce seasonal combos, however, it is also essential to transform mundane days with interesting offers to catch the eye of

needs as well. INOX has incorporated several of these practices to further and better its F&B business and revenue.

the customer. With the introduction of 'TUB-DAYS,' INOX has managed to rope in a crowd even on the leanest day of the week- a Tuesday. This promotional activity allows the brand to market recurringly, all throughout the property. The promo utilises the Big Tub, the largest size in the popcorn family as this acts as a bill value builder.

Practices to Incorporate Variety in food and promotions gains the attention of the cinegoers visiting the cinema theatre. However, to reach those at home and outside the cineplex premise, it is constructive to have practices that cater to their

With the introduction of associating with Swiggy and Zomato, INOX patrons can enjoy delicious INOX food from the comfort of their homes without having to pay the additional cost of commuting as well as the ticket price. On the other hand, INOX allows the patrons to 'DineWithoutTicket' as they reserve a table at Insignia and/or Café Unwind from Eazydiner. It offers 25 to 15 per cent discounts respectively to those availing this benefit.

Banquets: Alongside dining options, INOX also encourages its customers to give their special occasions a regal touch with the banquets at INOX. It hosts events from birthdays, anniversaries, corporate events to cocktail dinners

• INDIA PLEXING • and everything in between. INOX as a destination is strategically located with a luxurious ambience and well curated menu. It offers customised packages and personalised service to its patrons.

Cinema Bar: INOX has opened bar services at two of their outlets in Kolkata where customers could enjoy their favourite drinks while watching movies and also add them to the menu for private events.

Price Discovery: While offers and promotions are essential to the F&B vertical, price discovery functions as a deciding factor. Price discovery is not about increasing the prices of products, instead it is about creating value. INOX employs tactics such as ladder pricing as well as the decoy effect. Menus with decoy strategy place a decoy size between the smallest and the largest option, forcing customers to opt for the larger option in most

cases. Pricing of the products has to factor in the packaging material used as well as the unique selling point of the product. Along these terms, INOX has introduced a multitude of options within its F&B department while pricing them dynamically.

Menu Mast The designing of the menu mast requires extensive attention as it attracts the focus of the customers. With lesser and static slides, grouped

products with upselling options aids the customer in quick decision-making. It is essential that the menu mast communicates the value of the product, especially when showcasing discounts. The additional touch points that serve the F&B department include the incorporation of technology to make services more accessible and time effective. With popup carts and fast bites screens, the customers do not have to wait in long queues during the intermission.

INOX Crosses Historic Milestone of 700 Screens The newly launched megaplex by one of India's esteemed multiplex chains is fitted with 10 screens to seat around 1550 cinemagoers at a time making it the brands third megaplex till date. The megaplex is an architectural marvel and a remarkable food destination. INOX launched its third Megaplex in India in the city of Lucknow at the Emerald Mall. The viewing format has been specially curated for the kids keeping in mind their needs and fancies. Future Trends - The Big Experience & LED Cinema PLF - The Big Experience Most of the leading cinemas today, are equipped with state-of-the-art infrastructure including 4K laser projection, immersive sound systems, plush seating, designer interiors and extensive F&B services. These features have become commonplace and in fact, a necessity, for both new and renovated cinemas. Such cinemas are dominating the entertainment scene in 'A' centres; 'B' centres too are closing in on this trend since there is a dire need to provide a better cinemagoing experience to audiences. The need of the day is an evolution in the core cinema experience to attract

and retain a larger audience at cinema theatres against the competition from streaming entertainment services which are available at much lower costs and in the comfort of people's homes! Currently there are over 1,200 multiplex-grade cinemas and about 600 immersive audio enabled screens in India. However, the exhibition sector still faces its challenges to attract audiences and improve revenues. Given the competition and the saturation present in the industry, in order to stand out amongst the many good-quality cinemas, the logical

progression is to set up 'Premium Large Format' cinemas, widely known as 'PLF' Screens, providing an experience that simply cannot be achieved at home, immersing the audience in the movie and providing them a stunning experience. PLF cinemas provide a much bigger and better picture, combined with immersive audio and ergonomic seating in a carefully designed viewing space coupled with specially mastered content which is perfectly tuned to the viewing environment. The experience provided by the PLF format helps enhance the marketing of the content. The audience start seeking the branded PLF experience; PLF cinemas should be designed with utmost care to provide the audience with a highly immersive experience without distractions and a great level of comfort. The PLF picture requires 1.89 aspect ratio, 4K images, using true RGB laser projection with 3D, High Frame Rate (HFR) and High Dynamic Range (HDR) as options in order to provide the best visual immersive experience. The PLF audio requires immersive multichannel, object-based audio with an uncompromised configuration of speakers and amplifiers. The seating for this cinema format must be designed ergonomically to ensure comfort, so that the senses can concentrate on the movie and be immersed in the experience. PLF Screens should ideally have complete automation for the seamless integration of projection and September-November 2022

• TECHNICAL • environmental lighting which helps the audience transition into the movie seamlessly and in a consistent manner across different shows. With 4,000 PLF screens across the globe, India has less than 25! Even within this meagre number, not all of them offer an uncompromising experience as some of the PLF screens in India are retrofit that only achieve a marketing advantage. Audiences don't perceive a significant difference in these screens and hence there is a lack of interest. We lack PLF screens in India because of the unavailability; there wasn't an offering that provided all the required pieces, high-quality content, design services for an ideal space for an uncompromising experience, commercially viable business model tailored to the specific needs of our movie industry and most important of all, assured high visibility. Alongside PLF design and service providers from the US, Europe & other Asian countries, Qube Cinema from India is a PLF design & service provider, tailored to the Indian movie industry, providing the best technical support & commercials backed by a reputed Indian company. To compete with high quality streaming services, it is time for the Indian exhibition industry to move into PLF to attract and sustain audience interest in cinema theatres, thus evolving the cinema industry and keeping it alive and well. PLF holds the promise to change the face of the moviegoing experience in India. The value that the format brings creates a win-win for both exhibitors and audiences and keeps cinema a cut above all other competing media.

Direct View LED Cinema Screen As the exhibition industry evolves towards large PLF screens, there are technological advancements now

available for smaller cinema screens too, that bring higher quality pictures loaded with features. The latest on the block is the LED Cinema Screen aka the DIRECT VIEW DISPLAY. The Direct View Cinema Display is an array of Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs), with each LED chip containing red, green and blue sub-pixels representing a single pixel of the image. An array of 8.85 million such pixels will form a 4K image conforming to the DCI specifications for colour gamut, brightness, contrast and uniformity. DCI certified LED Cinema Screens will have all the required security features and include an internal Media Block to play both standard and High Dynamic Range DCPs. Here's why LE D Cinema is a LED compelling technology for exhibitors and moviegoers alike: In conventional projection, within the projector, there is a powerful white light source - either Laser or Xenon that is split by a prism and dichroic mirrors, into red, green and blue components that are then each reflected off an array of micro mirrors projecting 2K & 4K resolution pictures in each of the three primary colours, then being merged into one colour image, passing through the optics such as prisms and lenses to finally reflect off a specially coated polyester screen surface to your eyes. This journey of the white light from the source to your eyes thus encounters many processes that cause geometric distortion, loss of contrast, unevenness and other artifacts.

intensity, right from the off state to the peak brightness. With this kind of individual sub-pixel control, the LED Cinema Screen delivers absolutely deep blacks, something that is nearly impossible in conventional cinema due to the limitations of contrast in the DMD chip and the optics. With six times higher brightness than conventional cinema projection coupled with the deepest blacks, LED Cinema screens can achieve nearly infinite contrast and thus provide High Dynamic Range (HDR). In conventional projection, with the projector placed high above the screen, sometimes offset from the centre, and with the projected image passing through large lenses, there will be visible image distortion with keystoning and light falloff from the centre to the sides of the screen. In LED Cinema Screens, with the LEDs being individually controlled, the picture is uniform from edge to edge, with no light variation whatsoever from the centre to the sides. LED Screens thus deliver unbelievably sharp and beautiful images! LED Cinema Screens must be of 4K resolution but may have different pixel pitches based on the overall size required. This gives the exhibitor the option to choose the right display for their auditorium. The physical arrangement of the display is in the form of small LED modules contained within larger, physically detachable but secure cabinets. These cabinets are mechanically stacked to form the display to the required aspect ratio and resolution.

On the other hand, with LED Screen technology, the light path is a straight line from the source LED pixels to your eyes with no additional optics whatsoever. LED Screens thus deliver a vastly superior cinema experience to the viewer.

LED Cinema Screens are usually configured for the full DCI 1.89 aspect ratio. Scope movies can be played on 1.89 ratio screens with no requirement for masking as the top and bottom bands turn into an absolutely black surface.

The RGB sub-pixels in each LED are individually controlled to vary the

Since the light source of this screen is from its LED panels, there is no

• T E C•H TNEI C HA N L I•C A L • requirement for a separate projection booth with air conditioning. This gives exhibitors additional space to extend the seating area. Conventional projection lamps typically have 800 to 2,500 hours of life while the laser light sources can last between 20,000 to 30,000 hours in a well-maintained environment. Compared to that, LED displays need very little maintenance and can operate for a whopping 100,000 hours! Direct View Displays come with a host of advantages over the conventional projection systems:

Unmatched brightness and contrast

Spectacular High Dynamic Range pictures with a higher colour gamut

A very long operating life compared to conventional xenon, halogen & laser light sources

No degradation due to dust as the LEDs are sealed enclosures

No mechanical or optical alignments required

No projection booth, thus reducing space requirements and increasing design flexibility

While designing or upgrading a cinema, certain factors must be taken into consideration. Since the LED Cinema Screen does not have perforations, the stage speakers (L, C, R & Sub-woofer) must be located around the display or special speakers able to reflect the sound off the LED screen's surface must be used. For the speaker set up, the space around the display must be calculated for speaker positions based on the seating arrangement. Given the advantages of Direct View LED Cinema Screens over the conventional projection systems, it is a paradigm shift that is sure to transform the cinema experience!
