LEADERSHIP IS INFLUENCE By: Gary Bergenske
“Leadership is influence” stated John Maxwell. Through a variety of techniques a leader impacts the lives of others. The rewarding feeling of making a difference sparks the leader to continue this role. Individuals are recognized as leaders due to their actions. By leading through example, one gains the respect of others who in return follow the lead. Through motivation and believing in others a leader becomes successful. Humility enables a leader to stay on top. In order to be a good leader, more is needed than the ability to delegate. Leading through example is, indeed, the most important aspect of leadership. When others notice that the leader is actively involved they are more likely to become involved also. In a voluntary organization like the Shriners or your church, leading by example not only promotes good teamwork, but also creates enthusiasm and excitement as people want to join in the fun. All leaders that rise and stay on the top are respected and humble. A leader is not better than anybody else. There are times when no one wants to do something that must be done. It is at those times that a leader must take on the dirty work or perhaps do a little task that no one will even recognize. Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “A great man is always willing to be little.’ Leaders, by believing in themselves and everyone that surrounds them have the ability to achieve higher dreams. When believing starts from within one person it begins to spread and grow into others. A leader is able to make others believe through inspiration. A leader makes people realize their full
potential and push it further. In speaking of the leadership of Vince Lombardi, Jerry Kramer remarked, “He made us all better than we thought we could be.” This is the true sign of a great leader. Leaders are able to bring out another side of an individual. Leaders are always optimistic and never, never lose hope. Great leaders have an uncanny belief and vision to do their best, whatever it takes, to make the project successful. Leaders never stop believing in themselves or their followers. Belief is knowledge that we can do something. It’s the inner feeling that what we undertake, we can accomplish. For the most part, all of us have the ability to look at something and to know whether or not we can do it. So in belief, there is power; our eyes are opened; our opportunities become plain; our visions become realities. Believing is a key to achieving and it is contagious. Leadership qualities can become a bigger part of everyone’s life through continued education, growth, and the setting of goals. Growth is the process of responding to change for the better. Setting goals will give you the clear objectives to be a motivator and a true leader. True leaders are not born, they are developed by individuals that posses the wants, and desires to dedicate themselves to becoming one. This summer should be an exceptionally wonderful time for all my friends in the barter world. BARTERWORLD! I just finished viewing the final episode of “Lost” and sometimes when I say things like barterworld I feel like I’m talking about a sideways or out of our realm universe. Like we’re living in some kind of a future financial world, where everyone is able to buy services and things that we need on a daily basis, without the use of cash or credit cards. Wow! This all sounds too futuristic to be true. Well, not really. Last week my girlfriend got her hair done on trade, I had my brakes on the car repaired on trade and we went out to dinner two times without using cash. The future is now and the more of us who get on the program and use our trade dollars on a regular basis instead of cash, are the ones who somewhere in the not too distant future will be sitting on top. That’s right, bad financial times don’t last forever and neither do times of being able to use our trade dollars to our advantage. Start planning today how you can make your future a little brighter.
