Does The Barter Network have?… By Susan Hummell

The statement “Think outside the Box” is no longer just a statement in this economy. With businesses failing left and right the only way to survive in this economy is to do business outside of the box which we have been so comfortable in. The comfort zone has been broken and it’s time to focus on what we can control and not the bad. As a company of faith and good standing, The Barter Network, is setting high membership goals to be an example for others that we must work harder, now more than ever. With so much going on, many of our members are forgetting to refer our services and benefits to their own family, friends, and colleagues. The more referrals we receive, the faster our membership can grow, and the more members you can trade with, which will lower your cash cost with every new member that joins. We can only thrive through our members so what do you say? Let’s get out there and show other businesses how companies who barter are going to survive this economy decline and that we will choose to not participate in this recession.

2 www.TheBarterNetwork.net

How many ways are there to find participating members to utilize your trade dollars? In January each year we mail out directories of current members, most of us seem to misplace these shortly after they are delivered. It’s OK, there are other choices to find members, our website is a well equipped tool to find specific categories of members and you can go online and search for… carpet cleaners, for example, and find all the different options. The most used choice is to call The Barter Network office and choose the customer service option, and ask a representative for what you are looking for, this also works, just to find out who the new members are. A quick call to the office can get you the information that you need and it’s quick to access. New members are also listed in the newsletter mailed out every three months, with addition information to make your membership with us more productive. So, whether you are looking for hair salons, carpet cleaners’ invisible fencing, or a fishing trip, if you can’t find it in the directory, call and ask us. Many times if we do not have a particular company or category, we can expand our member search to find someone to fill that need. Enjoy your membership more by not spending your cash until you ask if that product or service is available on trade first...

What’s your attitude in this Recession?

By: Jason Bergenske

As I read and listen to the news each day I can’t help to realize that every story has one thing in common, negativity. Everyone is going out of business, the stock market is dropping, and we are in a recession. These are the topics that are talked about daily in the news and even at the dinner table. Having these topics as the focus of our lives it is hard to see how anyone stays positive or believes that things will turn around soon. I believe that people have forgotten how much of a difference one person can make, and that if one person decides to be different and take the course less traveled the world would be a much better place to live. The economy is bad, the bills are piling up, and everyone is stressed but this is no excuse to slow down and follow the crowd. As business owners we need to work harder to keep our regular business and work even harder for new business. If you need more business and need more cash, you have to look at different ways to use your trade dollars to conserve your cash.

If you are saying to yourself: “Well there is nothing on trade right now that I really need and what I do need I can’t find on barter” then I say you are following the crowd. The email blast, directory, and newsletters are great ways to update you on what there is on trade but there are a lot of other services and products that are not listed in those that require you to call into the office for more information. When was the last time you came into the showroom to buy a friend or family member a birthday gift, instead of paying cash? And if there is a service that you can’t find on barter, did you refer barter to the company you are going to pay cash? These are just some of the ways that you as a business owner can conserve more cash and start becoming a leader as a barter member and as a business owner. As a business owner I am pushing the limits of our young company and working harder for our members by using new ideas, asking for more referrals, and with a positive attitude. As business owners let’s stay positive and let’s stay in business.

Recession Brings Bartering Back Company Completed $2M In Transactions In 2008 ORLANDO, Fla. -- A bartering boom has hit Central Florida as Orlando-area businesses try to survive in today's economy. The Barter Network, which began in 2006 and completed nearly $2 million in transactions last year, contains more than 400 local businesses and serves as the broker between businesses looking to trade services. Members pay a 12 percent commission on each transaction, and there are tax implications, but the company provides members with the proper paperwork to ensure trades are done legally. The company said continued growth is expected. "We're probably going to double those numbers," said Gene Rankin, sales manager for Barter Network. Members raved to Local 6 about bartering. "We've had some amazing services -- from air conditioning to plumbing -- everything a business is going to need," said Lenny King, owner of Salon Zion in Longwood. "It seems right now businesses are linking together, and we have a lot of strength that way." Members said it's simple to exchange services with another company. "If there's a printing company in here and I don't have to pay cash out, I can call and say, 'I need more business cards,' or 'I need envelopes,'" said Debbie Wisner of Lisa Maile, an image, modeling and acting School. Wisner said she's learned to save the agency money after just one month of bartering. Barter Network members include Westgate Resorts, Royal Caribbean, Clear Channel and local auto repair shops and electricians. "We're helping (Westgate) with elevators, believe it or not. Security, exterminating (and) advertising is huge with them," Rankin said. "My favorite thing is that it opens the doors to networking to create that network between businesses you don't always find," King said. "It's just a great opportunity." Your Character; It’s who You Are By: Gary Bergenske

How do you build a character that garners respect? Character is not about having everyone like you; it’s about making everyone respect you and for what you stand. In the world today there are people who have allowed their character to be tarnished. People have sold themselves through dishonesty, unfaithfulness, and in making bad decisions. Some have given up the one thing they should hold most precious and never let be taken from them, their good character. There are rules of conduct practiced over your lifetime that aid in building good character. In my life, I have found 10 principals, which formed for me a roadmap to having a character others can respect. Consider making the following 10 points as part of your everyday life to build character…for life. Take the challenge and begin today to build your character. Your good character is more likely to be praised than your talents. Most talents are to some extent, a gift. Good character, by contrast, is not given to us. We build it piece by piece—thought by thought. The right choices, coupled with courage and determination will soon show your true character. Ten Character Builders

Live with Integrity; Devoting your existence to living a life filled with the quality of possessing and adhering to the highest of professional standards. Practice Good Ethics; The established habit of performing desired principles governed by your appropriate conduct, to be of high quality and to live decently and honorably. Respect Others; Treats all people with dignity. Works to show thoughtfulness, and to feel or show admiration. Looks for the best in others and will value their opinions. Positive Qualities, The art of producing good results by having an innately beneficial character that thrives on excellence and high standards. Moral Mind; Able to act on the principles of right and wrong as they govern the standards of premier behavior. Is self guided on how to act decently and respectably.

Behave Honorably; To act in an impeccable way, especially by being polite, good-tempered, and self-controlled. Develops a reputation of living by strong moral and ethical principles. Honest to All; Truthful, true and unbiased. Is a sincere, straightforward, law-abiding citizen who considers all situations in an impartial way. Decent Always; Kind, considerate, well-mannered, and generous. Constantly conforms to accepted standards of proper moral behavior on every occasion. Sets an Example; Lives a life that illustrates a model of exemplar behavior worthy of being copied or imitated. Inspires others through irrefutable conduct. Good Conscience; The internal sense of governing your thoughts and actions by allowing your core values to be your guide for what is fair and reasonable. Unlike your fingerprints, character is not something with which you are born, without a chance to alter and improve. Every individual is charged with the responsibility of building and forming their own character. If you do not live by this, then your character will begin to change, and it will not change for the good. I have seen men work hard to reach higher positions, positions with more responsibility and power, only to see them become selfish and self-seeking when they reach their goals. When this happens they begin to lose followers as their egos interfere with their true skills. Usually the first skill lost to ego is the ability to listen and then the loss of personal warmth begins to alienate others. If you feel this occurring, stop, and then reevaluate your position before you lose creditability. You owe it to yourself and all those who respect you, to always do your best. Gary Bergenske is available on trade to do Motivational speaking. His books and CD’s are available in the Barter Network showroom.
