Community Spirit At times, Cambridge feels like the relatively small and compact city it is. At other times, it feels larger than its actual size, not least with the new housing areas stretching the city limits and fuelling a debate about the need for a future underground system to address congestion issues. Espresso Library on East Road is calling out to the local cycling community and Hot Numbers on Gwydir Street offers live jazz music, contributing to the creation of new communities. Cambridge, like most cities, consists of many smaller communities, each with their own distinctive feel and many of us have own private "territory" in which we prefer to roam. There is a SOR and NOR (south and north of the river) divide just like in the world's largest cities and there is a sense of belonging attached to some of the main arteries such as Mill Road, Milton Road, Trumpington Road and Cherry Hinton Road. Wherever you chose to live in or around Cambridge, you are bound to start to think of yourself as a resident not just of the city, but of your particular part of town. This emotional link to neighbourhood creates great community spirit and a real sense of identity. Cambridge Cookery School & Café exists on the frontier of a new community currently being created off Hills Road. The Homerton Gardens site will be the new home to Abbey college as well as to nearly 100 new homes. We are keen to play a positive role within that community and have attracted a real following among residents along Hills Road who have long been missing a local café and who are expressing delight at our presence. We aim to become a link for residents as well as businesses up and down Hills Road. Our food is driven by what is in season locally. We work with local suppliers, including the superb, privately owned, organic estate Croxton Park. Much of what we cook is based on plant food, with animal protein playing second Þddle. Our open sandwiches and large salads are attracting a lot of positive comments.
