Dear Lifestyle Reader

Dear Lifestyle reader,

What a terrific response to our new magazine, Lifestyle – the magazine of Comanche Trace and the Texas Hill Country! The reveal party to launch the magazine was an outstanding success with over 150 attendees who enjoyed mingling with our residents. The feedback we are receiving has been very positive. Our residents are the best assets of Comanche Trace. Warm, friendly and fun-loving, Comanche Trace residents understand the importance of staying active and looking for great ways to socialize with each other. We’ve captured the essence of these folks in a highlight of everything Comanche Trace and the Hill Country region offers. You will discover so much diversity within this issue. We have expanded the Golf events section to include a feature on the PGA Valero Open Qualifier on May 6 & 10, which Comanche Trace also hosted in 2009. Jane Garbish, Personal Trainer and Pilates expert, has excellent fitness advice in this issue. The Builder Profile features resident and Preferred Builder, Arthur Schmidt, and Norm and Elaine Smith, who give us a glimpse of their home. Gail and Carolyn Goodloe take a moment to share how their special pet, Pixie, makes friends everywhere she goes! What issue would be complete without a Daytrip section? The Hallbergs traveled to Willow City Loop for the spectacular wildflower display, and have a report to share with you. Summer is loaded with member events, and the pool opened May 1. As a member, the pool deck offers you a great option to book parties with our Events Coordinator, Sherri Jones. You may also take advantage of our poolside menu, delivered by our courteous staff. Check out the Events Calendar for more details, and please RSVP if required. Kid Comanche Camp gets started in June. Every kiddo I know enjoys this week of golf, tennis and swimming. If you can’t make the June date, we have another week scheduled in July. Check out the Events Calendar for sign-up information. Warm summer days may invite you to explore the countryside. Take a look at the many vineyards in the area with a tour and tasting excursion. If you prefer to stay closer to home, the Club at Comanche Trace offers a monthly, special Steak Night and Wine Tasting that’s not to be missed. We also have created a tasty signature dessert, the Comanche Trace Ice Cream Pecan ball. Real Estate in Comanche Trace has a strong outlook for 2010. Custom home construction is expected to exceed 30 home starts this year, as lot owners begin work on their dream homes. The Rendezvous prospect event in April was a smashing success; our guests experienced an enjoyable weekend of golf, fitness classes, massage therapy and socializing with members. Many of them are in the process of purchasing their own piece of the dream. I hope you will continue to support our advertisers. Look for new ones joining us soon. These folks are your neighbors, and as patrons, our business supports the overall community. Venture out! It’s the best time of the year. Trevor Hyde, PRESIDENT

FITNESS banking, credit management and elementary teaching, personal training was the farthest thing from my mind. The more involved I became in running, however, the more in tune I became with how fitness (or the lack of fitness) affects lives. I wanted to take my passion for fitness and somehow share it with others. After much investigation, I embarked on my new vision by becoming certified as a personal fitness trainer at the Cooper Institute in Dallas. In addition, I’ve returned to the Cooper Institute twice for additional certifications: Fitness Specialist for Older Adults and Biomechanics of Strength Training. By broadening my education I can address the needs of a variety of people in multiple areas of fitness. A running injury also led me to pursue an interest in and eventually training in Pilates. High impact activities such as running can take quite a toll on spinal alignment, and Pilates focuses on promoting greater trunk and pelvic stability and muscle control of the spine itself. Consequently, practicing Pilates can prevent spinal injury, as strong core muscles allow us to do everyday activities (such as running and golf) with less chance of injury. So, what does all my background info have to do

EMBRACING AN ACTIVE LIFESTYLE By Jane Garbish

Fitness

As a personal fitness trainer, I feel that to have credibility to give advice about fitness and healthy lifestyles, I had better follow my own advice. For those who know me, I am probably thought of as the crazy runner who can be seen at various times of day, both on the Comanche Trace streets and the local highways – sometimes running crazy distances! By the time my husband, Gary, and I moved to Kerrville, we had both run 5 marathons and countless half marathons. Could that be considered an addiction – possibly! Although both of us had been lifelong runners, the idea of being able to run a marathon – 26.2 miles – came after we had reached the ripe old age of 50! Five months of dedicated, intense and sometimes painful training resulted in running our first marathon in Austin, and becoming “hooked” on the lifestyle. Is it always fun? No! Is it always challenging? Yes! Has it changed our lives? Definitely yes! For me that lifestyle change resulted in a career change as well. From past endeavors in commercial

with you? My ultimate goal is to transfer my enthusiasm for an active lifestyle to others – namely, you! There’s no shortage of readily available information and research on the reasons to engage in daily activity and healthy living. We all know why we should exercise and eat right and not smoke, etc. etc. It’s just actually doing it – all the time – which most of us have a little trouble with. We’re all pretty adept at justifying our lifestyle choices: · Too tired · Too busy · Too hot outside · Too cold outside · Too windy (Hill Country excuse) Let’s talk for a minute about the effects of aging on the human body. After all, aging is not a choice. It’s happening to all of us, whether we’re thirty or fifty or eighty. We’ve all experienced some of these effects: · Loss of bone mass · Loss of muscle strength · Decline in aerobic endurance · Lower energy · Slower metabolism · Bone and joint issues So, should we just take a seat in our recliner, grab the remote, and let nature take its course? We could, and some of us do, but the smart

ones recognize aging’s effects and start their attack! I’m not talking about changing everything you do, but begin by taking small steps at a time. Take the steps, for example, instead of the elevator. Eat an apple instead of a bag of chips. Go for a walk and DVR your favorite TV show (watch it later!) Get more sleep. All of these small steps add up to major improvements in your health and fitness. Okay, so you admit that you could probably change a couple of things in your life that would improve your health. Easy enough. For a week or two. Maybe even a month. But how do you stick with it? Where does that constant motivation come from? Studies have shown that there are three types of motivation that drive most people: 1. Visual motivation – you exercise mainly to look better. 2. Auditory motivation – you love to hear those compliments. 3. Kinesthetic motivation – (these are people who learn by doing) – they concentrate on well being. They do it just to feel better. So who do you think is most successful in the long-term? It’s the kinesthetic type. They keep at it because, even if

they do begin looking better and start getting those compliments, they stick with it because they FEEL the results. They feel good, which also makes them feel better about themselves. And truly, self-motivation is the key to success. Let me give you a few keys to staying motivated: 1. Enjoy what you’re doing. No matter how beneficial running is, if you hate it you’re not going to do it. Choose some activities you like, or have always wanted to try. It may take awhile to find your niche, but stick with it. It will be worth it! 2. Set a goal. Train for an upcoming event, set weight loss goals in short increments, commit to doing strength training two times a week. Remember how fulfilled you will feel when you succeed. And failure results only from never having tried. 3. Journal your results. Keep track of your workouts, your eating, whatever your goals are. This will make you more aware of when you do get off track – and trust me, we all get off track. But if you catch your slide within a week, it’s much easier to get back on track. 4. Think function. Focus on how exercising can make your everyday activities so much easier and safer – work in your yard, play 18 holes, carry your own luggage – all without the

fear of injury. 5. Find a friend. Whatever you’re doing, doing it with a friend is more fun. And you’re much less likely to skip your 7:00 a.m. workout if your friend is counting on you to be there. Accountability works! Lifestyle changes are never easy, but little that’s worth doing is ever easy. Make those changes little by little, but make them permanent. And take pride in what you’re doing. Many of us have spent a lifetime taking care of others. Now is the time to take care of you. Again – remember that aging is not a choice, but aging well is. Do I think everyone should be a long distance runner or strive to do a century ride on their bicycle? Definitely not! These choices have worked for me and continue to motivate me. But everyone is different, and you must try to find those activities which push you to participate. Mix it up! Choices keep boredom from setting in. Most importantly, make it a priority in your life. It will be worth it!

Jane Garbish holds three certifications from the Cooper Institute in Dallas: as a Personal Trainer, a Fitness Specialist for Older Adults, and in the Biomechanics of Strength Training. She teaches a Pilates Mat Class Monday mornings at 9:30 and does personal training at the fitness center by appointment.

Give Pilates a try, or contact me to design a personalized strength training program. Change your habits – change your life!

GOLF

Tony Johnson PGA, Head Golf Professional Comanche Trace.

Golf Update After the nice, Spring rains in April, Scott and his crew have the golf course looking better than ever. As usual, we have a lot of great upcoming events for the membership to participate in. Before we talk about those, I would first like to recognize some of the outstanding performances in tournaments we have recently completed. In April, the club hosted the Memorial Cup which is Comanche Trace’s version of the Ryder Cup. The Blue team, captained by Bill Stillwell and myself won a very competitive two day event by a score of 19 ½ to 16 ½. The matches were much closer than the final score indicated as the Red team, captained by Leo Clark and Trevor Hyde still had a fighting chance until the final two matches. Way to go Blue and thank you to all the players from both teams and to all the wives who came 16 LIFESTYLE JUNE/JULY 2010

out to support the event. This is a great event in which all the players qualify for their spots, so make sure to sign up for as many MGA events in the future to help get in next year’s event. Also in April we hosted the LGA’s Texas Hole Em Golf Tournament. Due to the nice, Spring rains, this event was shortened to one day with Linda Malson and Kathy McHone winning the first flight and Maria Swann and Debbie Wade taking the second flight. Great going ladies and thank you Betty Rees for putting on a great event. The STPGA held their spring Pro-Lady at San Antonio Country Club on April 20th. The Comanche Trace team of Tony Johnson, Cheryl Wood, Trish Butler, and Toni Manchester shot a two net ball of 131 to take first out of 24 other clubs. I would like to congratulate the ladies for their outstanding play and

participation. We also held the 1st Annual Rendezvous tournament where prospective members were given the chance to interact with current members to experience the Comanche Trace lifestyle for a day. The event was a great success with prospective members from all around the U.S. Congratulations to the first place team that came in with a score of 128, Mitch Weatherly and Don Butler and paired with guests Frank Battaglia and Steve Patterson. Thank you again to all the members who participated in this event. The Valero Texas Open Qualifier was held on May 6th & 10th and we had some of the top Nationwide and touring professionals trying to qualify for 4 spots to the new TPC Marriott JW resort in San Antonio. The low score on Thursday during the pre-qualifier

was 66 shot by Thomas Hagler and our own Bob Leist, assistant professional at Comanche Trace came in second with a 68. The weather on Monday changed with gusty winds blowing 25 to 30 mph. The top four to go to play in the Valero Texas Open with rounds of 68 were Derek Tolan, Mike Standly, Gene Williams, and Ryan Baca. Three of the four players were from Texas. The course was in beautiful shape and the comments from the professionals were that Comanche Trace has some of the best greens in Texas. The players also commented on the generosity of our membership and would like to thank all the volunteers who helped. Just a quick reminder to all of you that we will be hosting The Men’s Club Championship on June 4th 5th & 6th.

Speed and Read Equally Important By: Tony Johnson P.G.A. As an instructor, it has been drilled into me that speed is more important than line. This will always have some truth to it because if you have a perfect read but end up one inch short, you obviously had a speed issue. In my own piddling, if you read a putt incorrectly and have the appropriate speed, you can still end up in three-putt territory, particularly with double breaking putts. It doesn’t take much to suddenly end up with a five to seven footer that should have been, at worst, two feet beyond. Reading the greens better has improved my speed DRAMATICALLY; only if I get fooled do I end up with a longer second putt than I wanted. There is no question that speed is important with a putt, but if you misread a putt with correct speed it is definitely worse than reading it correctly and ending up an inch short (the second scenario is certainly better from a competition standpoint.

Grillin

Grilling

ng

It’s grilling season—time to pull out your old dependable grill for some great outdoor cooking. Whether you have an old fashioned charcoal or wood grill, or a more advanced self-igniting, temperature controlled, all-in-one-thatmakes-your-drinks unit, there are a few cardinal rules that apply to whatever you are cooking on. Here are a few helpful hints and techniques to make every grilled meal a success.

TIME AND TEMPERATURE

For smoking foods, cook at a low temperature for a long period of time, covered. This produces that perfect moist and tender texture. For grilling thinner pieces of meat, cook at a high temperature and fast - grilling one side, then flipping and cooking the other side directly over the flames, or hot coals. For thicker meats, move them to an area where they get indirect heat as this allows the inside to cook completely. Most chefs rely on indirect cooking

for the perfect piece of meat.

FUEL

Certain woods give better overall flavor to the types of food we are smoking. Wood chips work well for smaller meats such as steaks or pork chops but when smoking ribs or pork shoulder use larger wood chunks. Never use fresh-cut wood—it smokes too heavily and makes food taste bitter. Alder wood gives a light smoke best for fish especially salmon. Cherry or Apple wood is best for mild food such as chicken or pork. Oak wood is all-purpose as it burns evenly and has a clear flavor. Mesquite wood, the most common type, burns super hot and gives off an intense flavor great for game meat.

PREPARATION

Before cooking I’ll usually marinate the meat or chicken. Marinating adds flavor as well as helps tenderize food. Try to use an acid-based marinade that contains vinegar, lemon juice or other citrus juices as this helps break down the

meat. In addition, adding mayo to a marinade will help give a beautiful crust when grilling. Once marinated you might want to allow the food to come to room temperature before grilling, but don’t let it sit unrefrigerated longer than 20-30 minutes. Always brush sugar-based sauces at the end of cooking to keep them from burning. Most barbeque sauce contains sugar, corn syrup or tomato sauce, all of which burn quickly. One tip when basting, tie fresh herbs to the brush to add flavor especially for poultry items. To keep foods from sticking, lightly coat the cold grill with oil before heating. It also helps to lightly coat the food surface with oil before cooking Practice makes perfect and timing is everything. Each type of grill cooks differently, and each type of food needs different attention. Don’t make the grilled foods wait for the rest of the meal, get your side dishes ready beforehand because once the meat is cooked, its time to eat.

EASY BEEF RIBS Dry Rub Seasoning ½ cup brown sugar 11oz chilli powder 2tbls garlic powder 2tbls onion powder 2tbls cayenne pepper 1tbls cracked black pepper 2tbls paprika 1tbls ground thyme 1tbls ground cumin Prepare barbeque smoker with mesquite or hickory wood. Rub ribs with dry rub and let rest for one hour before starting to smoke. Smoke ribs slowly over indirect heat at 250 to 275 degrees for two and a half hours. Brush meat generously with brown sugar and honey and wrap in foil. Cook till tender and falling off the bone. LIFESTYLE JUNE/JULY 2010 21

Let’s go to Luckenbach, Texas

24 LIFESTYLE JUNE/JULY 2010

BACK TO THE BASICS By Ben Schooley

Willie, Waylon, and the Boys said it best when they sang, “Let’s all go to Luckenbach, Texas”. What location embodies the spirit of adventure and care-free days as Luckenbach? With its majestic oaks, cold beer, and an attitude that just begs you to put your feet up and watch the world go by, Luckenbach is the ultimate summer destination. That being said, our adventure will take us through the metropolis of Willow City, lunch in Fredericksburg, and finish with a sunset as we depart Luckenbach. Leaving Kerrville on Highway 16 toward Fredericksburg, roll your windows down. Let that Hill Country air envelope the car and let your cares disappear with the wind. The great truth of the roadtrip is that you always return to the same location, but the trick is to return refreshed and rejuvenated. Leave

your cares in Kerrville. Pulling into Fredericksburg, it’s time for lunch. Do yourself a favor and try out the all-new Crossroads Steakhouse and Saloon. It is a tremendous spot to kick back, enjoy a mouth-watering steak and a beer, and enjoy some of the finest cuisine in the Hill Country. If a steak is not on your agenda, there are countless eateries featuring everything from German to Mexican fare along the main drag, and most won’t disappoint. Other favorites are the Auslander for great German food and the Hilltop Cafe for some lighter dishes. Bellies full, head north on 16 toward Llano. About halfway to Llano, you’ll stumble across a real gem in Willow City. Little more than a wide spot in the road, Willow City boasts two tremendous wineries that are worth a visit. Bell Mountain and Granite Hills Vineyards are widely renowned for producing some of the Hill Country’s most delicious and robust wines. The real draw is the solitude. You are quite a distance from most anything, and it’s great fun to enjoy a glass of wine, receive a winery tour, and sample their finest offerings without the distraction of road noise or humanity. Looking across beautiful Hill Country sceneries with your favorite roadtrip partner smiling as you sip some great wine, makes you feel 20 years younger. And even more thankful to be a part of this area. Returning to Fredericksburg, turn east on Hwy 290. A short 5 miles later, turn south on FM 1376. You are now entering true Texas History. As you pull up on Luckenbach perhaps 10 minutes later, turn right into the “city” of Luckenbach. Little more than a post office (which is out of commission) a dance hall, and a bar (which is very much in commission), the entire town is the size of a large backyard. And perhaps

that’s the draw. There aren’t many places where bikers and corporate execs can sit down at a picnic table under the trees, play a game of “washers”, and enjoy a beer. There are no social classes in Luckenbach, there are no cliques; it is truly a town made up of folks needing to shrug their cares for an afternoon, needing to reconnect with likeminded folks, and needing to simply get out and enjoy what makes the Hill Country one of the most beautiful places on earth. Grab a beer and simply behold. Listen to musicians strum and sing beneath the singing cicadas. Shop for souvenirs in the little gift shop, and swap stories with the other folks around you. Buy a cowboy hat from the small hat shop, and even a sandwich from the snack bar. Whatever you do – relax. There is no more laid-back place to visit, and you’ll be doing yourself a disservice if you do any more than simply enjoy the sunshine, the cold drinks, and the camaraderie. “We like Luckenbach on a Saturday night for some great music from the past and present. Every time we ride into town I think of 1976 and Waylon, Willie, and good memories. In 2005 we bought this lot on LaCumbre and became a member at that time. We also purchased a villa so we could spend 6 months here in the winter months and 6 months in Hastings, Minnesota where we were from, to run our tree nursery business. After 30 years, we sold our business in November of 2007 and retired in Kerrville in May of 2008. We built our current home in the summer of 2009 and just moved in 4 months ago.”

THE SILENT FORCE

Lloyd Painter, Secret Service agent responsible for 7 presidential terms, recounts his 28 years of service where his mission was to never be the center of attention…while protecting the lives of the most powerful men in the world.

By Ben Schooley Photography By West Vita

34 LIFESTYLE JUNE/JULY 2010

Following Lloyd Painter’s several tours of duties with the Navy, he was happy to have returned to his native California in 1970. With his beautiful wife Ingrid in tow, the Painter’s were excited to begin a new life. “I had grown up in California, and hadn’t been anywhere except with the Navy. I still had no concept of a federal agency, so I figured I’d work with the state. I went into the Post Office in Fresno in 1970 and in there was a picture of Nixon and a uniformed officer. The sign told me that the officers were making 7000 dollars a year. So I filled out the questionnaire and sure enough, they called. They called and said, ‘do you know you are qualified to become an agent because of your degree’? I went in and spent 4 hours with him and they basically told me that if everything checked out ok, I would have the job.” “In those days there was no internet, so they had to do all the background checks the old fashioned way – it took 18 months. I was working as a probation officer and I was quite happy. I really enjoyed my job. All of a sudden I started getting information that they were finishing up my background check. They wanted me to go get a physical, but I was unsure if I wanted to do it. Eventually I did it, and sent it in. Then they wanted to talk to my supervisor. This made me very nervous and I told them that if they talked to my supervisor, they had to hire me. They wouldn’t guarantee me this, so we eventually settled on the name of a guy who was all of two weeks more senior than me to get

a reference,” Painter laughs. “I was still really unsure about making the move, but I finally figured that you could be a probation officer anytime, but it wasn’t everyday that you had the opportunity to be a Secret Service officer.” With that, Painter began his illustrious career. An unceremonious start to what would become almost 30 years in the Secret Service, Lloyd and his wife Ingrid would enjoy adventures that would take them around the globe. After meeting her in the officer’s club during one of his tours of duties, Lloyd knew that he had met his match. “Ingrid was working in the personnel office and came to the club as a guest of another officer, and as soon as I saw her, I knew she was for me.” Following their return to the States and Lloyd’s induction into the Secret Service, it was obvious they were destined for the adventure of their lives. Painter continues, “They hired me, and within 6 weeks, following Secret Service training, I was guarding Nixon. It was pretty surreal. Bobby Kennedy had been shot, and they decided that candidates needed protection, so there I was, standing next to Richard Nixon. No sooner than I had started, we were guarding Nixon at the National Guard Armory in North Carolina and one of Nixon’s aides told us to arrest the dozens of Vietnam War protestors. We did, and the lawsuits continued for something like 10 years. It was a real eye-opener.” Following his duty to Nixon, Painter was sent to protect then Presidential candidate George LIFESTYLE JUNE/JULY 2010 35

Wallace in 1972. Painter continues, “Governor Wallace was a Segregationist. You can imagine how politically explosive that assignment was. One night in Fort Wayne, Indiana, Governor Wallace was giving a speech at the National Guard Armory. Thousands of shouting folks were in attendance. All of a sudden the crowd decided to come up on stage. They surged over us and all I remember is going down, grabbing my weapon and my radio, and hearing the call over the radio to evacuate the “Protectee”. As we were leaving, bricks and stones were hurled at the Governor’s limousine. We made it out in one piece that night. Governor Wallace was either idolized or hated, nothing in between. One night in Maryland, one of those who hated him attempted to assassinate him. Governor Wallace was shot in the back while on stage. He never walked again.” In 1975, Painter was assigned to Gerald Ford. While he has many memories of Ford, Painter laughs about the most memorable part of protecting him. “I was assigned to President Gerald Ford, who was appointed after the Nixon Watergate Scandal. President Ford would tell the same jokes at breakfast, brunch, lunch, dinner, and late night affairs. He was fond of saying that ‘If I tell that joke one more time, the Secret Service Agents will ‘stroke’ out’. He was correct. To say that his jokes and their delivery were terrible is an understatement! We endured the torture every day for weeks on end.” In ’76, Painter was assigned to Ronald Reagan as he began his run 36 LIFESTYLE JUNE/JULY 2010

to the presidency. Looking back, Painter identifies Reagan as one of his favorite “protectees”. “I really enjoyed my time with Reagan. He was such a respectful, amicable guy; all of us really enjoyed just being around him. While Ronald Reagan campaigned around the nation, my assignment was to secure the perimeter of his primary residence; control access; and, x-ray all mail and packages sent to his Pacific Palisades, CA home. The USSS placed a mobile office in Reagan’s front drive. This assignment lasted almost nine months. When Ronald & Nancy Reagan would return to their home, they would always spend time in our “office trailer”. The future President would tell us stories of his previous life as a movie star. He had played a Secret Service Agent in the Code of the Secret Service (1939). Most people don’t know this, but Ronald Reagan always slept with a pistol under his pillow, just in case someone was able to penetrate our security. He would laugh and say that even if someone got through all of the security, they weren’t going to get past him. Needless to say, he was very popular with the Secret Service Agents.” There were times that Painter also had to worry about himself in the course of performing his duties. Sometimes he was forced to face his fears, and other times, he was able to luckily avoid the situations altogether. “In 1978, I was assigned to protect President Jimmie Carter during his highly publicized visit to the Three Mile Island Nuclear Power Plant disaster in Middletown, PA. Radiation

had leaked from the damaged unit, and I was concerned about my own personal safety. I dreaded visiting that site. Just before I arrived at the Nuclear Power Plant, some “crazy” in nearby Harrisburg threatened the President’s life and I had to divert into the city and interview him. It may well have been my longest interview of record. I made that interview so long that President Carter had come and gone from Three Mile Island by the time I had finished. I have always felt good about missing that assignment!” His ability to travel abroad had a profound effect on Painter. Both the travels internationally and domestically, left an indelible mark on him. “In 1982, I was assigned to President Ronald Reagan on his trip to Korea and Japan. We flew in a C-141 Cargo Plane and were refueled in mid- air. The C-141s were used to transport the motorcade, fuel truck, electrical generating equipment, telecommunications gear and Secret Service Personnel. The President takes everything with him when he travels abroad. Refueling in mid- air was a bumpy, heart stopping experience. Upon arrival in Korea, the Korean Government had positioned thousands of school children along the route from the airport to the hotel, all waving American and Korean Flags. All buildings along the route had been evacuated; folks had been removed with threat of imprisonment. I couldn’t help thinking how much easier our job would be in the USA if our routes could be cleared like this.” And as Painter returned to the

States, the world that they operated was a stark contrast to other parts of the country. “What I noticed overall is that I would be traveling with the President one week in the best hotels in the world. Then next week I’m working the slums on a counterfeit case. The disparity between the top and the bottom was so profound. These people live the lives of kings and queens and it’s hard for them to relate to us. I noticed that a lot. The rich and the poor; it was astounding.” As one might imagine, the travel and adventure were one part of the job; and the boredom was yet another. Countless hours standing around simply watching people or investigating threats that go nowhere are a side of the industry that, while necessary, can wear an agent down. Ingrid begins, “During the whole time that he traveled Lloyd and I couldn’t plan anything. We never knew when he would have to take off again. Later on when they got sophisticated, if it was a big enough threat, you went.” Lloyd adds, “At Christmastime, I remember going to the airport and watching all these families going on vacation and then I’d realize that I’m going to work. It got hard. We had Jana (the Painter’s only daughter) in ‘72. I would travel for 3 weeks and then be in the office for 3 weeks. It became very hard. Presidents would go on vacation for months and that would mean I was gone for months.” That time spent with the families also enabled a lot of interaction. Some good, and some bad interactions. While Painter couldn’t go into great detail about the identity

of some of the subjects of his stories, he could still tell us a few. “During the first 20 years, I was assigned, at various times, to protect the family members of all of our Protectees. Family member protection is a very delicate operation. If the family member has a problem with the Secret Service Agent, he or she will go directly to “daddy” and complain. Some of the family members were extremely hard to deal with. While protecting the young teenage daughter of a former President at

an exclusive summer tennis camp, the “First Teenager” was fond of sneaking out of the dorm and hiding from the agents. Not a good situation to be in. I certainly didn’t want to be the agent that lost the First Teenager! Other “First Children” would do things that their parents would not approve of, but the Secret Service Agents had to look the other way. The daughter of a former President was fond of using language only heard at truck stops, sometimes just to embarrass the Secret Service

Agents. Needless to say, it was fun a lot of the time, and other times, it was exhausting.” One of the more intriguing aspects of Painter’s responsibilities was that of “threat investigation.” Every threat, every day is investigated. Every single one. As one might imagine, that caseload is staggering for the Secret Service. “The investigations into the threats were the biggest part of our job. Every single threat must be investigated, and then they’re forever in a file. Even the ones that

were deemed harmless. If that person ever shows up at an event, they are declined entrance. In the 90’s I had a convicted murderer who got out on parole. He was strong as an ox and dumb as a tree. He threatened a president. He was in one of our categories where we watched him all the time. The president was coming to his town, so a few days before he arrived I showed up and made contact with the subject. I would take him to steakhouses, football games, LIFESTYLE JUNE/JULY 2010 37

anywhere. It was a nice way to keep them occupied. It was just part of the job. So much goes on the public never sees and is necessary for safety.” As Painter progressed in his career, he was given the opportunity to perform in some different capacities. “The Secret Service is a premier Federal Law Enforcement Agency. As such, its agents are issued handguns, automatic weapons, shotguns, and other weapons. Agents must be proficient in all issued weapons and so training is of paramount concern. I had the great opportunity of being trained as a Secret Service Firearms Instructor and for many years, I ran the Secret Service Weapons Re-Qualification program at the field office. From 1992 to 1997, I was assigned to the San Francisco Field Office. During that time frame, I was selected to be one of five Regional Recruiters that focused on Minority Recruiting for the entire USSS. My territory included the ten Western States. My assignment was to locate qualified minority applicants, interview them, and make them aware of career opportunities with the USSS. I would then begin the screening process. To accomplish this, I attended Minority Job Fairs throughout the Western US; I frequented College and University campuses; I guest lectured at College and University Criminal Justice Classes; I volunteered to speak at Rotary Clubs, Lions Clubs, etc. All in all, it was a very rewarding assignment and a great way to end my 28 year career in the USSS.” 38 LIFESTYLE JUNE/JULY 2010

The Painter’s daughter Tara had since moved to the San Antonio area and, while the Painters had always assumed they would retire in California, they were open to the idea of moving to the Hill Country to be closer to her. “We had been coming here since about 2000 visiting the area. We decided it would be nice to live closer. Tara found Comanche Trace on the internet and they were having a tour of homes. We came and looked around and really liked it. We actually bought this lot that weekend from Lesley Spencer.” Since transplanting here, the Painters couldn’t be happier. “We are so happy to be here. We love the views and the entire community. We planned to retire in California, but we were going back and forth. In ‘06 we began construction and moved to San Antonio as we got the house going. Kelley and Glinn White of White Construction built our home and they did the most amazing job. We are best friends with the Whites now. Kelly is a builder but a decorator, too, and that was just great to have. We trusted their opinion so much. We aren’t huge golfers, but we have made so many wonderful friends. Ingrid is on the board of the League of Women Voters and we have become involved in so many things in the community. Trevor (Hyde) is a magnificent administrator, and the entire community is going in the right direction. From my career to retiring here, I know we just couldn’t be happier.”

Manager

The September issue of Texas Monthly will showcase Boynton Financial as a 5-Star Wealth Manager, an honor given to less than 7 % of managers in Austin, San Antonio & Central Texas. After 27 years in the Financial Services industry and having a relatively small practice, it is an honor to be named to this list. My son and I have a strong core belief; “Retirement dollars should always go up in value.” We believe the first thing to be done with a new client is to control the downside. If you don’t you are just gambling, pure and simple. We look forward to you dropping by or giving us a call to set up a free initial appointment.

Elaine and Norm Smith Give Unique Antiques a New Perspective By Jeanna Goodrich

“I think it’s the best built house we’ve ever had,” Elaine and Norm Smith both said of their house on La Cumbre in Comanche Trace, “and of all of the houses we’ve built, this was certainly the easiest and most fun.” The Smiths, along with Arthur Schmidt and Drew Imel of Arthur Schmidt Construction, have created an on-golf Comanche Trace masterpiece, which they are proud to truly call home. “We saw an ad for Comanche Trace in Texas Monthly magazine, and decided to drive to Kerrville from our home in San Angelo to check it out,” Elaine began. “We had been looking at golf communities around the state with the idea of retiring ‘some day.’ We had several basic requirements: a beautiful and affordable golf course and club; the ability to own your own golf cart; and proximity to a good airport. When we saw Comanche Trace we knew right away that we would like it. “ After driving down “barely a dirt path” and

“wading through knee-high grass” with sales representative Lesley Spencer to look at lots on the just-budding Phase 4, Elaine and Norm were very satisfied with what they had found at Comanche Trace—and called the very next day to reserve their lot. “We knew there was a good chance we’d found our retirement place,” Elaine said. “For the next year, we drove to Kerrville about once a month, and each time we came we liked Comanche Trace even more.” Not only had the Smiths found a great place to live, they’d found a great place to play golf. “After we played the course, we were hooked,” Elaine said, “and we knew it was time to start designing the house that we wanted. Around that time, Arthur was building the Golf Villas, and we were very impressed with the carpentry, cabinets, and quality of construction. When we met with Arthur, we got the answers we were looking for.” Elaine had

heavy input on the design process, laying out the plans for exactly what the Smiths wanted, and giving the design to David Norado with Athens Design to create the constructionready specifications. At two hours and fifteen minutes—“on the nose”—from San Angelo to Kerrville, the Smiths came down to Comanche Trace about once a week to explore the city and to be a part of the building process. “We were a little nervous about building long-distance,” Elaine said, “but when we would come to check on the progress of the house, we were never disappointed. We could always count on the fact that Arthur would be available and that he was keeping a close eye on all aspects of the project.” In the meantime, Elaine and Norm had put their home in San Angelo on the market, and it sold in a mere seven months. “[The Smiths] had sold their home, and they had to be out LIFESTYLE JUNE/JULY 2010 45

in a certain amount of time,” Arthur said. “I told them that I’d have their home completed in time…” Elaine finished his thought, “But I didn’t believe him. I’d never had a house finished on time, and I was moving in, even if there was no kitchen. Well, Arthur proved me wrong, and sure enough, not only was the house finished on time, it was finished a week ahead of schedule.” Then Elaine added with a laugh, “I think the real reason Arthur got everything finished is because we told him we were going to move no matter what—even if it meant moving in to the guest room in his and Rolinda’s house down the street.” The Smiths commented that the building process 46 LIFESTYLE JUNE/JULY 2010

worked so smoothly because of the effort by Arthur Schmidt Construction to work with them and listen to their ideas. Elaine then commented that Arthur took care of several oversights the Smiths had missed, as well as added a lot of extras. “We made suggestions on different materials to use, and we worked real closely together on the different materials to use for the house,” Arthur said. “After building for a long time, you learn which materials to use and which not to use, so we bounced some ideas off of them and, together, our ideas worked out really well. Of course, Drew was a big help through the entire process,” he added. Arthur referred the Smiths to Jennifer Hyde of Hyde

& Company, who helped the Smiths with many of their interior design choices, including paint colors and color schemes. Elaine noted that much of the couple’s furniture is antique or one-of-a-kind, and they wanted to make sure it fit in the new home. One such element, an intricate stained glass window depicting a Hill Country golf course, the Smiths had removed from their home in San Angelo and placed in a custom-fit frame in their office and reading room. Throughout the rest of the house, softly painted walls accent plush leather and antique furniture sets, giving the open and spacious home a very warm and personal touch. Outside, the sandy stucco is emphasized by lush,

green landscaping by Maldonado Nursery and Landscaping in San Antonio and complimented by blooming plants in Elaine’s garden. In an enclosed space just off the kitchen, Elaine keeps an herb and vegetable garden blossoming with cooking essentials. Both Norm and Elaine boasted about the style and functionality of their home. “I love the patio outside because we love the view of the golf course,” Norm said, referring to the nearly 2,500 square feet of outdoor living area they use to enjoy the outdoors. “Overall, it’s just a really cozy house,” Norm continued. “We didn’t build an excessive house; we don’t have anything we don’t use. We built what we needed, and we use everything in

here. Having the casita outside, but kept closed off, is great for us when family visits.” While the Smiths have their favorite parts of the house, Arthur and Drew also noted that they enjoy the building process. “For me, the entire experience is the best part of building the house,” Arthur said. “I enjoy building a house; I enjoy working with customers. You become close friends, and that’s the way it should be— an enjoyable experience, not stressful, like you’re having all your teeth pulled. I build a home like I’m going to live in the home, and that’s the way I run my business.” The Smiths commented that they are impressed with the Schmidt’s commitment to the Comanche Trace com-

munity. “I think it’s important that our builder lives [in Comanche Trace],” Norm said, “because he’s going to be neighbors with all of his clients. It’s a huge investment to make, and it’s very personal.” Arthur chimed in, “The people out here are all really nice. The Smiths have had the whole neighborhood over for dinner some times; the house is great to entertain in.” “Everyone that lives here is here for the lifestyle of Comanche Trace,” Arthur continued. “I love it here.” Norm added, “Yes, the Hill Country is great. When we visit our friends in San Angelo and they ask us, ‘How’s Comanche Trace?’ I always say, ‘Well, it’s alright if you like paradise.” LIFESTYLE JUNE/JULY 2010 47

START WITH THE RIGHT LOT By Reggie Cox, Broker

As children, we all dream of what life will be like when we are grown up – Who will we marry, where will we live, will we be a doctor, lawyer or geologist? All dreams start somewhere and then they grow. What about dream homes and lifestyles? There can be no dream home without the perfect lot. Does the dream include a dramatic hillside view, a golf course view on the green or down a long fairway, a private courtyard designed to be your own little world, or maybe just great neighbors? What is the best way to shop for a lot? There is no better way to find your dream lot than putting yourself on the lot – walk over the entire lot – look in all directions for the view you will have once the home is built. Ask about prevailing breezes – how do you want your home oriented? Do you like the trees? Are the trees in a good location on the lot so they will not have to be removed in order to site your

home on the lot? What kind of building site will you have? Do you love sitting in the evening and toasting the sunset? Is a quiet morning watching the sun rise more your style, or perhaps the full moon rising is what you wait for every month. Do you have a strict budget for building your dream home? Is the lot easy to build on or does it offer challenges – with great rewards – but may cost more to build than on a level lot. There is so much to consider. Do you want the last lot in an established neighborhood so that you know what the house next door looks like and can easily find out what life is like on that street? Do the neighbors gather often for block parties or are they active golfers? Would you prefer to be the first house on the street so that you can help the neighborhood take shape? Is your dream to build a grand estate home or perhaps to downsize a little once the children have flown out on their own? Do

you want to be close to the active lifestyle like tennis, pool, fitness center, walking trails, Clubhouse, or would you prefer to be off the beaten path? The more things you consider about your lot, the easier and better your choice will be. Comanche Trace has a wide variety of lots to offer in several different neighborhoods. There are estate lots that are larger (many of them are more than an acre) and offer dramatic views, single family lots which are smaller (from ¼ to ¾ of an acre) and many have incredible views as well. There are fully designed neighborhoods where you first choose a plan suited to your dream and then pick a lot. Many plans offer courtyards which provide privacy and the opportunity to create your own world inside that courtyard. Within the various neighborhoods the lots are all unique and offer those elements that will meet your particular dream. The beauty of people is that no two have exactly the same dream

so it is important that you take time to think about just how you want to live in your dream house. The right lot makes the dream so much easier to fulfill. Comanche Trace has an excellent sales staff with years of experience watching our community grow. At Comanche Trace we only sell Comanche Trace lots and homes, so our sales executives are the experts. They have participated in the growth and know the lots that are available very well. Come to Comanche Trace and tell them your dream and they can help you find that dream here. Both sales executives have been through the process of building a home so they can help you weigh the pros and cons of lots that may fit your criteria for your lifestyle once the home is completed. If your dream is to build and you find the lot of your dreams, the staff will be happy to help you find the perfect architect and builder for you to achieve your dream. But it all starts with the lot!! LIFESTYLE JUNE/JULY 2010 51

ROTH: TO CONVERT OR NOT TO CONVERT New regulatory changes make it easier than ever to convert a Traditional IRA or employer-sponsored retirement plans to a Roth IRA—even if you didn’t qualify in the past because of your income level.

New regulatory changes make it easier than ever to convert a Traditional IRA or employer-sponsored retirement plans to a Roth IRA—even if you didn’t qualify in the past because of your income level. That can mean the retirement assets you are working hard to build now, will one day become retirement income, free of tax. You may have read that tax law changes went into effect in January that made everyone eligible for a Roth IRA conversion, regardless of income level or tax filing status. What’s so special about a Roth IRA? The assets you are working hard to build now will become tax-free income in retirement. Rather than paying taxes when you withdraw the funds in retirement, you pay taxes on the assets when you invest in a Roth IRA. If you have a Traditional IRA or an employer-sponsored retirement plan, you may be wondering if you should convert those savings to a Roth IRA. There is no one definitive answer to that question, but following are a number of reasons why, depending on your personal financial situation, converting an existing retirement plan to a Roth IRA could help you meet your financial goals.

You don’t expect to need all of the funds when you retire. With a Traditional IRA, you must stop contributing and start taking minimum distributions from your account at age 70½. Roth IRAs have no such age restrictions: there’s no contribution cutoff, provided income requirements are met, and no rule that you must begin tapping your account at age 70½. Your funds have the potential to grow tax-deferred as long as you want and you gain greater control over your income in retirement. You can tailor withdrawal amounts to your actual income needs—or eliminate them altogether in any given year So if you are past age 70½ and would like to quit taking those required minimum distributions, you may still have the option to convert some or all of

your IRA into a Roth, allowing those funds to have the potential to grow tax-free for your own needs later in life or for your heirs. Note that you will need to pay taxes on the taxable amount of the IRA at the time of the conversion, so you should review this option carefully with your tax advisor before electing to convert to a Roth IRA. Also, the funds may only be converted after any current year required minimum distributions have been withdrawn.

You want to leave a lasting financial legacy to your heirs. If you won’t need your IRA to fund your retirement income, a Roth IRA can be an effective wealth planning tool, since heirs can enjoy continued asset growth potential without paying taxes when they withdraw assets. By using a “stretch IRA” strategy, you can extend the tax-deferred growth potential and tax-free income benefits of your Roth IRA across multiple generations. This works by taking advantage of the fact that, while the beneficiaries of your Roth IRA (other than your spouse) will be required to take minimum distributions annually after your death, those distribution amounts will be calculated using a life-expectancy factor based on their own age, not your age. This allows more of the funds to remain in the account longer, continually reaping the benefits of tax-deferred growth potential, and if your beneficiary outlives the account, it can similarly be passed on to the next generation, and so on.

You’re concerned about taxes. You’re aware that diversifying your portfolio by investing in multiple asset classes, including stocks, bonds and cash, can be a way to mitigate risk. The same logic applies to tax diversification: by spreading your retirement assets across different types of accounts provides diversification. A tax-free Roth account combined with a taxable account, like a

brokerage account or mutual funds account, and a tax-deferred account, like a 401(k) or Traditional IRA, can give you the flexibility to potentially keep taxes low in retirement. This is especially important if you’re concerned about future tax increases or you think that your tax liabilities may be higher in retirement. Converting some of your Traditional IRA to a Roth IRA can be an effective strategy that allows you to take income from different sources to potentially keep taxes low in retirement.

You think that you might need some of the money before you retire. If you withdraw funds from a Traditional IRA before age 59½, not only will you be taxed on the value of the funds withdrawn, you will also be subject to a 10% early-withdrawal penalty unless an exception applies. With a Roth IRA, you can withdraw the original contribution at any time, without penalty. You can even withdraw earnings, but if you do not meet the requirements listed above regarding the length of time held, age and other considerations, you will be taxed on the earnings when you withdraw the funds.
