or over 67 years, the Texas Lions Camp, located on over 500 acres in Kerrville, Texas has provided camping experiences, without charge, to children with medical conditions or disabilities, which preclude participation in traditional camping programs. Since its inception in 1949, the Lions Camp has served over 68,000 children, and in summer 2015, provided 9 weeks of life-changing week long camping experiences for over 1,500 more. Children between the ages of 7-16 with qualifying physical disabilities, children

TEXAS LIONS CAMP between ages 8-15 with Type-1 Diabetes, and children between the ages of 12-16 with Down syndrome are able to attend Texas Lions Camp because of the generosity of donors. Children who would otherwise be unable to experience the joys of a childhood summer anywhere else are afforded the programs and facilities that enable them to ride horses even though they live their days in a wheelchair; to paint and do crafts though blind and unable to see their masterpiece; to climb a 2 story wall even with limited mobility; make friendships that last a lifetime;

6

and so much more. Texas Lions Camp made a difference in the life of one young girl who lives each day in a wheelchair. She spent her days wondering what it would be like to walk, or just stand outside of the assistance of her chair. Regardless of her limitations, her smile reveals the persistent joy inside which she can’t wait to share with everyone who crosses her path. Each day of camp she was excited about what adventure was coming. Whether participating in art, music, drama, fishing or horses, her enthusiasm spreads to everyone around her. As

her group approached the zip line and climbing walls, she wasn’t sure she could to do either of the activities. She would just cheer on everyone else and not get her hopes up. The counselors approached and asked what activity she would like to do, zip line or climbing wall. Her enthusiastic answer was “Zip line”, with a tinge of hesitation, wondering if it really could be possible. Her harness was placed and helmet strapped on. Her wheelchair was taken to the bottom of the zip line pole. The zip platform, which sat 2 stories above her head, seemed totally out of

reach. But with help from trained staff and skillful rigging, she slowly ascended to the high perch to begin the process of zipping. “Wow, it’s high up here,” she replied as the last of the safety checks were being completed. “Are you ready? Zip on,” announced the instructor. Without hesitation and pure enthusiastic glee, she leaned forward and cut the sky with a squeal of delight. The wind caught her hair and her eyes were wide open so she wouldn’t miss a moment of the experience. As the ride of a lifetime came slowly to a halt and she was

7

lowered back into her awaiting chariot, she smiled. “I don’t have to wonder what it would be like to walk; I know what it’s like to fly.” The Texas Lions Camp through generous donors has provided a place where young people who struggle in the world to be seen, heard and to contribute to those around them, can do what they’ve never done, in order to become who they are meant to be. More information on the Texas Lions Camp and how to donate can be found at www. lionscamp.com, or by calling 830-8968500.

Kerrville is very proud of its excellent schools – both public and private. KISD is an accredited 5A school district that is the home to four elementary schools, a dedicated sixth great campus, a middle school, and one high school. As a district KISD was one of the 24 Texas school systems out of more than 1,200 to earn a distinction designation for postsecondary readiness. Despite reduced state funding to public education since 2011, KISD continues to provide the highest quality of education without raising taxes. Notre Dame Catholic Elementary & Middle School is a Pre-K 3 year old through eighth grade school. Notre Dame develops its own curriculum considering the Texas TEKS, National Academic Standards, and Standards for Curriculum adopted by the Archdiocese of San Antonio. Foundations Academy also offer education for students from Pre K or Kindergarten to twelfth grade. There is a passion for learning that is contagious. Students are expected to excel and they do. From their beginning in kindergarten through graduation from high school, students are on a path to learning and participation that teaches them not only the basics, but how to work in groups toward common goals. School spirit is high at all levels here and parents are an active part of the activities. Kerrville schools produce winners!

DEVELOPMENT By Laura Maberry Photography by Joe Herring, Jr. Comanche Trace and West Vita

Comanche Trace has a storied history as one of the most recognizable properties in Kerr County as well as the City of Kerrville. Bobby Shelton, a descendent of Captain Richard King of the King Ranch in South Texas, named the property Comanche Trace when he purchased it from Carl Meek in 1978. Shelton and his family built the headquarters atop the highest point of their Kerrville Ranch. Mr. Shelton’s love for horses and his respect for the Comanche Indians as great horsemen led to the name that became Shelton’s horse ranch. At one time, the ranch had over 600 Quarter Horses, a Veterinary Clinic and Breeding Facility. Mr. Shelton was involved in many business ventures and owned property around the country, but our current 24,000 square foot clubhouse nestled on one of the highest points in Kerr County, served as his corporate headquarters. Mr. Shelton held elegant and extravagant parties and hosted guests from all over the world here at Comanche Trace.

17

The elegance and charm of Comanche Trace was recognized and brought back to life by the Kemmerer Family after the property was purchased in 1998. The Kemmerer family is a very well known, respected, and established family-Kemmerer, Wyoming is named after them. The family owns and operates other unique developments such as the CM Ranch, listed with National Register of Historic places, one of the two oldest working dude ranches in Wyoming, and the Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, just to name a few. The Kemmerer family has spared no expense in revitalizing Comanche Trace into a master-planned golf course community that emphasizes open space and the Hill Country life style. The Kemmerer family purposely decided to incorporate many of the unique attributes of the property into the design of the community, most notably transforming Mr. Shelton’s opulent corporate office into our current clubhouse facility. This attention to detail and visionary design continue to make this property an ongoing symbol of excellence across the State and country. More than 15 years later, Comanche Trace has developed into a highly recognized golf course community in the Hill Country area. We are proud to offer one of the most respected and wellconditioned golf course facilities in the State. Our community continues to grow and expand; when our development is complete, our community will have an estimated 1,000 homes. All of this, combined with the amenities that Comanche Trace has to offer, will insure the continued growth and excellence of our community for generations to come.

By: Ken Bruner Residents and property owners in the community of Comanche Trace have the benefit of a master-planned and architecturally guided development with a keen eye toward stable property values. All owners are members of the Comanche Trace Ranch Community Association which provides numerous desirable amenities including 4+ miles of maintained walking/hiking trails, a

community garden with individual plots and a private “catch & release” fishing lake. There is also a private, 8-acre riverside park on the beautiful Guadalupe River featuring a covered pavilion and picnic facilities A modest $635 annual fee per lot provides for the maintenance of all the landscape care of all common areas of the community. In addition there are

20

several “maintained” neighborhoods where fee-based landscaping and yard maintenance is provided ranging from $1300-$1800 per year to specific groups of homes. This allows residents to enjoy freedom from yard mowing and tree and plant maintenance in favor of the many other hobbies and pursuits offered in this premier golf destination community.

The Association is overseen by a Board of Directors who hold quarterly public meetings and an annual meeting to adopt such measures that will maintain solvency, meet needs for improvement and execute contracts on behalf of all residents. The Association is financially sound and has a reserve for maintenance and capital improvement in place within an annual budget showing assets in excess of $900K for this year. Part of the Association’s management includes administration of an Architectural Review Committee, composed of un-biased professional design and construction experts aided by resident and development members. The ARC meets regularly to review and approve all new construction proposals, landscape, pool and fence designs as well as any proposed additions to existing buildings. The goal is to maintain a consistent quality of product within Comanche Trace while allowing a range of design expression indicative of vibrant and quality styles in both structures and landscaping. In order to provide a quality and timely response to Association members the Board employs an on-site Manager whose purpose includes answering resident inquiries, ensuring maintenance contracts, improvements and security are accurately fulfilled. This helps keep with the high standards of an acclaimed master-planned community, and keep track of covenant and restriction compliance in a respectful, professional manner for the benefit of all members’ quality of life and property values.
