PRIORS PARK COMMUNITY GARDEN RECEIVES NEW FUNDING www.tewkesburydirect.co.uk

Nestled between Queens Road and The Nature Reserve in Priors Park, Tewkesbury, lies an area that was previously overgrown with brambles and used for fly-tipping and other antisocial behaviour. For the past two years, local volunteers and project officer Erin Baker of Vision 21 have transformed the area into Priors Park Community Edible Garden. Thanks to new funding from the People’s Health Trust, using money raised by Health Total via the Health Lottery, plans can be put in place to expand the site. The £37,725 grant will be used to double the size of the existing area and allow the project to continue for an additional two years. After this time the aim is to establish an allotment association to oversee the site, making it a permanent part of the community. Currently the garden occupies around 600 square metres of space. Members of the local community volunteer their time and, working together, attend weekly sessions to maintain the garden and grow fruit and vegetables. At the end of the session volunteers are invited take a share of the harvest if anything is ready to be picked. Volunteers who live close-by use the com-

munity facility as their own kitchen garden, and harvest what they need as and when. Organised sessions are held on Tuesdays from 3pm until 5pm and Thursdays from 10am to 12 noon. Taking on a new allotment can be quite intimidating, so the sessions are a great way to introduce people to growing their own food. Anyone interested in having their own plot or joining the sessions can contact Erin Baker on 07432 673069 or email ebaker@vision21.org.uk Vision 21 is an independent sustainability charity focused on Gloucestershire. It is as much a social organisation as it is an environmental one, helping people to improve their quality of life as well as their surroundings. People’s Health Trust is an independent charity addressing health inequalities across Great Britain.

Knitting the community together at The Roses A community knitting group based at Tewkesbury’s Roses Theatre is appealing for donations of wool to help its charitable work. K2Togs, which meets at the theatre on Wednesday mornings, aims to create a friendly group of knitters who support each other by coming together to combat loneliness, and at the same time help good causes. The ladies who knit have already created 16 blankets which have been sent to South Africa - each one comprising 35 squares. That’s a lot of knitting! This means a lot of wool is needed to keep up with the pace of knitting - so donations are gratefully received.

Wednesdays. For further information call Jane Griffiths on 07943 637773.

They can be taken to the Roses Theatre where Community Builder Jane Griffiths will be pleased to receive them. New members are welcome to join the group too: and there are additional ‘knitting stations’ elsewhere in the town for those who can;t make it to the theatre on

Growing and caring Another group supported by a grant from the Barnwood Trust in Tewkesbury is the gardening group which meets at the Day Care Centre. The group currently meets on Mondays from 2pm until 4pm, and extends an open invitation for anyone who would like to know more about gardening - or would like to build new friendships with those who share a common interest. The group actively supports people with dementia and their carers. A windowsill gardening project is also in full swing, which involves participants from the Drop In at Tewkesbury Library. Both of these projects are also going to be planting up some of the barrels at the top of Nelson Street as part of Tewkesbury in Bloom. Again, for more details call Jane Griffiths on 07943 637773.

GIRL POWER WINS AT WHITE TIGER TAE KWON-DO

www.swbbusinesssolutions.co.uk steve@swbbusinesssolutions.co.uk 28 Clifford Avenue Walton Cardiff Tewkesbury GL20 7RW

Four Female students from the White Tiger Academy of Tae Kwon-Do and Self Defence based at the Wheatpieces Community Centre in Tewkesbury have been promoted to first, second and third degree Black Belts. After a National Independent Tae KwonDo Association Black Belt grading in Tewkesbury, Alison Keen performed various disciplines that included advanced leg and hand techniques, set sparring combinations, free sparring and patterns (attack and defence combinations in various directions), basic knife defences plus a theory test. She achieved a first degree grading. Angela Appleby was promoted to second degree black belt and also had demonstrate her skills in various disciplines, as well as taking a theory test to ensure a good knowledge of Tae Kwon-Do. Alessia Leo and Jill Wanklyn were promoted to third degree black belts; their disciplines also included two on to one knife defences. Instructor Paul Wanklyn, a fifth degree

black belt said "I’m immensely proud of the ladies who have put a lot of hard work into this grading and they truly deserve all of the credit. It’s not easy to attain black belt and even harder to achieve a higher dan grade and it just goes to show that this is not just a male orientated sport or past time.” Paul also offers the opportunity for the disadvantaged youngsters of Tewkesbury to learn Tae Kwon-Do and Self Defence at his Friday night TACT (Tewkesbury Active Combat Training) sessions which are open to youngsters from 13 to 25 years of age. He also offers Tiger Cubs classes for children between 4 and 7, with a specially designed syllabus where children learn through play and fun. For more information visit www.white-tigertkd.com

SUMMER MUSIC IN BREDON

Once again, for the fifth consecutive year, the Cheltenham Symphony Orchestra returns to Bredon for a concert packed full of amazement and delight, writes Andrew Chapman.

Late night appointments are now available with Gemma and Tim on Thursdays and Fridays (subject to availability)

The Cutting Crew: Gemma, Tim & Emma with Alan

Those of a more mature generation will recognise in the Dag Wiren piece the signature tune of the long-running BBC arts programme, Monitor, that was headed up by the late Huw Wheldon. This is approachable music which will showcase the fabulous string section of the CSO. And then the wind have a chance to display their mettle with a Suite by Richard Strauss. The opus number displays that this is early Strauss but already his skill as an inventive composer is evident.

PLANTS,TREES & SHRUBS Hardy Perennials 4 for £10

Conversely Haydn's Symphony no 104 (The London) is the last symphony that he wrote. It has always been a favourite with performers and audience alike for its melodic invention and generally sunny disposition. Just the music for a summer's evening. The orchestra will be conducted by David Curtis. Tickets prices are £14 (students £7, children 15 and under free). Available by calling 01684 772272 or at the door. The concert takes place in Bredon Village Hall on Saturday 5th July at 7.30pm.

CELEBRATE 15 YEARS HELPING PEOPLE MOVE

IN TEWKESBURY

By Charlotte Wilkinson, Partner (I’m the one in red in the bottom photograph

)

A BIG thank you, first and foremost, to ALL of our clients, people and companies who have partnered with TAG as their Estate Agent or Letting Agent going way back to 1999. What a varied 15 years it has been too, on the sales side we have seen a stable market, an accelerating market, a decelerating market, a stagnant market and today’s market which feels as if the balance is about right. Plenty of activity when pricing is sensible resulting in sales which allow people to move on, physically and figuratively, with their lives. The lettings market has been a lot less volatile, demand and supply would appear to have been in balance pretty much since we started offering our lettings service in 2003. With few exceptions the quality of the rental portfolio in our area is excellent, as are the tenants who take them. We now have in excess of 140 properties under management and hundreds more where we have acted on a tenant find only basis. Of course, over 15 years we have evolved and grown as a team and the company has a strong and enduring proven process which will benefit anybody looking to buy, sell, let or rent. Here’s my quick list: The Ancient Grudge Our beautiful building from which we take our name, prime position on Tewkesbury High Street and open 7 days a week, The Ancient Grudge was built in 1471 and is the only Tudor building in Tewkesbury with the distinctive herringbone façade. A wonderful showroom! Walton Cardiff Office Ideally located in the hub of this thriving suburb and open until 9.00pm weekdays, the rear wall of our Walton Cardiff office features a fantastic 28ft x 18ft aerial view of the development which was installed in 2003, a full 2 years before Google brought us Earth and Maps and aerial views became commonplace!

s The Ancient Grudge

The Team Myself, Vicky and Paul as partners are complemented by our wonderful team, Christa, Josh, Chris, Gill, Bev, Andy and Laura, there is over 100 years experience in that line up! Hours of Business We make ourselves available for as long as we can to facilitate our clients own working patterns, The Ancient Grudge is open 7 days a week Mon-Fri 9.00am-6.00pm, Sat 9.00am-5.00pm, Sun 11.00am-3.00pm and our Walton Cardiff office is open Mon-Fri 9.00am-9.00pm. That’s 117 hours a week! Online Exposure

s Walton Cardiff Office

Tagestateagents.co.uk, Rightmove, Zoopla, Primelocation are the main portals but we are on many less well known sites as well, most search terms for property related enquiries in Tewkesbury on Google will return TAG, front page! History Our archive shows that we have completed on sales and helped people or families move on over 3000 properties in the last 15 years! Company Ethos It’s quite simple really, we want to help people move. Sometimes things are more complicated, sometimes things are straight forward, either way we use our experience on behalf of our clients to HELP THEM MOVE which is the whole point really, isn’t it?

Here’s to the next 15 years! Charlotte and the TAG team. 14 - TEWKESBURY DIRECT

COMMUNITY WEEDING DAY You don’t have to be green fingered to join volunteers for Tewkesbury's Big Community Weeding Day taking place this month, just be prepared to get stuck in, writes Shelby Powell. Volunteers of all ages are invited to meet members of Tewkesbury in Bloom at 10am at The Crescent (next to The Abbey) on Sunday 6th July, for a morning of weeding and tidying up. Tewkesbury in Bloom members hope to get the town looking at its best ready for Wednesday 9th July which is when Heart of England in Bloom judges come into town armed with clipboards and pencils to mark the town's efforts. Organisers suggest volunteers bring some gardening tools with them, although gloves and high visibility jackets will be provided. For further information please ring John Badham 07971875617

Doing good locally helps the Gloucestershire Arthritis Trust donate £35,000 for treatment Marking their 30th Anniversary gave the Gloucestershire Arthritis Trust (GAT) the perfect opportunity to remind supporters of the many ways they had benefitted local people. GAT’s target was to raise £30,000, to support up to 10 hospitals, but the charity ended up giving grants of over £35,000. This has taken their 30year fundraising total to £2.4 million. Announcing GAT’s financial results at their

AGM, volunteer treasurer Dylan Jenkins said “Increased donations have meant we could help even more people. This shows just how much both Gloucestershire and South Gloucestershire residents want to help a locally based charity that in turn helps the 70,000 local people who suffer with Arthritis.” Hospital physiotherapy departments right across the region will benefit from GAT’s newest grants, such as Tewkesbury. “We are proud to have provided medical equipment that now enables

over 2,000 people every year to have an operation that will help improve their mobility,” said Dylan Jenkins. “It is clear that if you’ve got Arthritis, GAT is your charity.” People of all ages can suffer from Arthritis, it is no longer just an ageing problem. GAT Trustees have also given Gloucestershire Royal Hospital a grant of over £10,000, making it possible for surgeons to treat around 80 younger people, every year, in the early stages of hip Arthritis. The University of Bristol has also been

able to complete a Spinal Orthopaedic research study, thanks to GAT, which was published in four national and international medical journals - improving the treatment of what is known as “dowagers hump.” Children too have benefitted from GAT funding over £3,000 of child-sized physiotherapy equipment at the Children’s Clinic. For more information about GAT contact: Steve Morton, secretary via email: steve@glosarthritistrust.org. Telephone 01242 221005 or mobile 07896 045715

ABBEY GATEHOUSE TO OPEN FREE DURING TEWKESBURY MEDIEVAL FESTIVAL From Saturday 12 to Sunday 13 July 2014, The Landmark Trust, one of Britain’s largest building conservation charities, will open 16th-century Abbey Gatehouse in Tewkesbury free to the public. Timed to coincide with Tewkesbury’s Medieval Festival, these open days are a rare chance for the public to explore this exceptional building known as the 'lodging over the great gate.' The gatehouse is usually only accessible as selfcatering holiday accommodation through The Landmark Trust, who restored the building in the 1980s. The little gatehouse survived the destruction

of the great Benedictine monastery in 1539 during the Dissolution of the Monasteries. Little is known of the gatehouse’s functions after the closure of the Abbey: such buildings were often used for parochial or manorial purposes, perhaps as a courtroom or a lock-up, but there is no written record of how the Gatehouse was used during this period. In disrepair, it was restored by John Martin

in the 19th century and then settled back into its previous ornamental but empty existence, serving as a rather grand lodge to Abbey House. During this time it was used as both an artist’s studio and a girl guide’s meeting room but the narrow, winding staircase made the building difficult to accommodate a permanent owner. The Landmark Trust took on the building in 1986 after the suggestion of a local neighbour. Staying at Abbey Gatehouse provides a grand base to explore

the town of Tewkesbury, the Cotswolds and Cheltenham. All are welcome at these free open days and there is no need to book. A free information leaflet will be available to explain the history and restoration. For further information or directions please contact the Landmark Trust Booking Enquiries on 01628 825925 or www.landmarktrust.org. uk. (Booking Enquiries opens Monday to Friday, 9am to 5.30pm and Saturday, 9am to 1pm).

STEAM GIANTS IN MINIATURE

The Annual Model Steam Road Vehicle Rally is taking place at the Tewkesbury Rugby Club ground on Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th July. This event is great for all the family where visitors can see some of the finest working small scale steam road engines. This year there will also be some special displays that include a birds of prey display by “Walks with Hawks”

and weather permitting it is hoped that the birds will be able to perform in the air. Another display will be from the acclaimed “American West Group” who will be performing in their teepee village. Travelling through Europe they have

appeared on stage, radio and tv. They will perform dance, wear authentic costumes and tell stories. For 2014 the MSVRS will be donating money donated from the road runs to the Sue Ryder Leckhampton Hospice Charity.

VETERAN MACHINES FROM WORLD WAR II To coincide with the 70th Anniversary of D-Day in July, two very special railway locomotives went on display at the former Royal Engineers Army camp at Long Marston. The American USATC S160 class locomotive

Franklin D Roosevelt is there for Storage.

Constructed in 1942/3 eight hundred of these locos were shipped to the UK to assist with increasing the capacity of the British Railway System to allow for shipping of military preinvasion equipment and troops. Also on display was the Barclay 0-4-0 diesel loco named appropriately Mulberry after the floating harbour that was constructed at Arromanches. Mulberry went with the invasion forces on D-Day plus eight and was sent to the transportation stores depot in Bayeux. After the war she returned to the UK. The former army camp at Long Marston is situated on the route of the northern end of what is now the areas favourite tourist attraction, The Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway. Organisers hope to have an open event, Railfest 2015, next year. Watch this mag for more details.

Church End and Puckrup

4

This month’s ‘eye in the sky’ photos from Jack Boskett show the part of Twyning known as Church End (above) and nearby Puckrup (left). Church End is the older part of Twyning, and lies just over half a mile south of the main village. It is a little way off the A38 reached by Pages’ Lane (1). At the centre of the village is the parish church of St Mary Magdalene (2) near to Abbot’s Court (3). To the west of the A38 is Puckrup Hall (4). This is now an upmarket hotel, part of the Hilton chain, which stands in 140 acres of private grounds that include a golf course. The hall itself is a Grade II listed building dating back to the late 18th century.

humour throughout. The late 1950s time period is well presented and for anyone who has marvelled at the interlinked domes of the Atomium, you will be able to imagine the skyline in which this comedy is grounded

£8.99 PB A comedy book laced with gentle espionage to savour on balmy summer evenings. In many respects the star of this novel based in 1958, is the Atomium which was built in Brussels for their International Exhibition of that year and which remains an icon of the Belgium capital and a structure that the city is rightly proud of. Thomas Foley, a quiet contented husband and father, is plucked from the obscurities of the Central Office of Information to oversee the opening of "The Britannia", a typical English pub, which forms part of the British Exhibition. His father was an ex-publican; his mother Belgian, thus qualifying him for this role. In Belgium, Thomas is entranced by Anneke, one of the local Expo hostesses and he is soon embroiled with other nationalities from either side of the iron curtain into a world of spying, to which he is comically unsuited. A duo of English agents make his life uncomfortable but are a

great double act of literary humour, performing a duet of comic verbiage. The story unfolds over the months of the Expo, intrigue tickling everyday events as Thomas conscientiously tries to fulfill his supervisory role of the pub's P.R. This despite the other staff and suspicious clientele. All the while he is seductively mesmerised by Anneke, who leaves his prim British emotions aroused. A great read with

As part of their successful fund-raising campaign the club published a calendar featuring some of it’s players and sold them locally. They have donated half of the profits to the Midlands Air Ambulance and recently visited the operational centre at Strensham to hand over a cheque for more than £700. Bredon Star has just finished a very successful playing season when the first fifteen gained promotion to the Gloucester One League and won the North Midlands Vase knockout

The club has a very active junior section with over 170 youngsters between the ages of 6 and 16 and as part of the RFU’s ‘Fit for Fifteen’ campaign are seeking to encourage more players of all ages to join. DIGGING FOR IDEAS Found recently by metal detectorist, Stuart Borley, this recently discovered tool looks like an axe head. As it has no hole but a spike (tine) instead for a handle it could be some sort of digging or ditching tool. Can anyone shed any light on its possible use?

SEVERN UNIT MVS ARE ALL AT SEA The Annual Offshore trip for the Tewkesbury based Severn Unit Maritime Volunteer Service was a great success when the Unit took two boats from Sharpness. As well as visiting Cardiff the training cruise was extended this year to take in Bristol with an over tide stop at Portbury where members experienced drying out at low tide. Head of Seamanship Tim Huckvale said "The trip was a great success with several members going offshore with the Unit for the first time and we were very pleased how well our recently donated training boat Minerva performed in the variable sea conditions."

CHILDREN’S EMOTIONAL CRUELTY LAW PROPOSALS LITTERED WITH PITFALLS WARNS LEGAL EXPERT Proposals to create legislation targeting emotional abuse of children may be unworkable warns a Tewkesbury family law expert. Wayne Phillips, a family law solicitor for DF Legal said many lawyers have similar misgivings about the socalled ‘Cinderella Law’ which would make emotional neglect and abuse a charge which could see parents and guardians facing court proceedings. “This may be unworkable and certainly littered with pitfalls,” said Mr Phillips. His comments come in the light of the NSPCC recent report that there has been a 47% increase of child emotional abuse cases referred to the police and children’s services. Presently the Children and Young Persons Act states that a person should only be punished for treating a child “in a manner likely to cause him unnecessary suffering injury to health.” However, the new proposals in last month’s (June) Queens Bill if passed would include behaviour seen to affect children’s emo-

tional development. “We could have situations where making a child start crying because you haven’t bought him an ice-cream could be deemed emotional abuse,” said Mr Phillips. “It could be a child feeling that their sibling is being favoured or being in a tantrum because they haven’t been allowed to play with their friends,” he said.

“Child cruelty is terrible and all should be done within the law to stamp it out, but covering emotional abuse is very tricky,” he added. “We hope it can be, but at the moment it is a proposal that clearly needs a lot more clarification.” The NSPCC’s figures showed 60,000 people contacted their helpline in 2013/14, of which 8,000 calls were about non-physical cruelty.

DID YOU KNOW THAT TEWKESBURY HAS ITS VERY OWN TARDIS? As Bookworm celebrates its 4th birthday, (shop) Manager Karen Brennan tells us more asks for new companions to join their journey. Karen and her trusty team of colleagues have worked behind the small door of Bookworm for the past 4 years to create a friendly, well-stocked and widely supported bookshop. Just like Dr Who’s Police Box, behind the innocuous door is a whole world of possibilities. Karen, along with her team (6 of whom have been volunteering in Tewkesbury for over 8 years); have developed an independent charity shop that raises money for Cancer Research UK and local charities.

Bookworm sells a huge range of donated books; they also have a cosy little tea room hidden at the back of the shop and a secret garden where home-made cakes and ice-cream are served. And..... they support the Pied Piper Appeal by selling stamps, and Tewkesbury Food Bank by helping with Admin space. Furthermore, they also run Bookworm Tewkesbury Transport

(better known as BTT). Karen says: “I was managing the Oxfam Bookshop but after 23 years in Tewkesbury High Street, Oxfam closed the branch. I, along with my team of volunteers, decided to carry on in an independent capacity and together we launched Bookworm.’ Karen, who is now in remission from Cancer, knows first hand how much the money raised for Cancer Research UK has improved treatment and continues to do so. “Once we were established one of the issues we found we could help with was transporting local people to healthcare appointments, so we set up Bookworm Tewkesbury Transport. The scheme provides a friendly adaptable service for the community with a small number of volunteer drivers. There is no lack of customers, but we do have a shortage of drivers. With the help of more volunteers, we could expand our services for the benefit of our community.” BTT has received some financial support

via The Lloyd’s Bank Community Fund, as a result of a local public vote. Karen added: “It is great to receive financial support but we also need ‘people-power’. We are desperately short of volunteers who can give a few hours a week to drive for us. We have a variety of other things that people could help us with, so there should be something for everyone of all ages; from making teas, selling book and online sales through to organising events or helping ad hoc at busy times. Whatever you can offer, we would love to hear from you.

There are a lot of people looking for work who could benefit from gaining experience and it is also an opportunity to improve your CV. “ Bookworm would also like to hear from anyone who is recently retired with either a business or IT background. Karen: “Often after retirement, people still like to have an active role in society. We would benefit from someone who could commit to helping us with online, business to business and marketing aspects of the shop. If you would like to apply, please contact me for an informal chat.” So come on

Tewkesbury! Have a think about what you would like to do and give Karen a call to enter the Tewkesbury Tardis.

Spring Gardens On a drizzling Saturday afternoon as the market packs away, Spring Gardens is an unremarkable, but financially valuable car park, writes John Dixon of Tewkesbury Historical Society. Historically, however, it was very important as the site of several industrial features; the railway, a cattle market, a factory making fairground equipment and housing. Spring Gardens? There are no gardens or springs today but there is the footpath which separates the Maltings from the homes of senior citizens. On the 1928 aerial photo, the footpath clearly acts as the boundary with the houses, later known as Spring Gardens, to the left. At that time, it presented two rows of houses separated by a long garden. The development was built after the railway came in 1840 and there were no windows on that side. However, the other aspect was quite fascinating as the 2-up-1-down homes possessed the garden for vegetable growing (which young Hazel Stiff - above right - was enjoying in the 1920s) and a hut at the end which was a stocking weaver’s workshop. At that time this was the main occupation for so many locals. This is verified by a sale notice of Weaver and Moore (below) from 1868. It also reveals that the need for housing had led to the conversion of the workshops into housing and, certainly, censuses reveal it provided rented accommodation for widows. In some properties, the workshops were converted into commodious outdoor toilets, I believe. The houses were popular with skilled working families in the 19th century but were allowed to deteriorate until they were demolished in the 1950s. The area is once again threatened with change but any developer will not just be digging up tarmac but a mine of domestic histories of many Tewkesbury families! Happily, children like Hazel, still live with us to perpetuate the memories.

The Commemoration of World War I is gathering pace—but it is certainly not a celebration but a recall of how Tewkesbury people were affected, writes John Dixon of Tewkesbury Historical Society. Those who lost their lives are rightly honoured on war memorials—but those who were wounded or unemployed or orphaned just had to get on with life. Life also changed for those who waited at home. It is very difficult to realise in days of 24 hour rolling news that there was no news of the great epic retreat of the Glosters* until it trickled through two months later. Tewkesbury Direct, in conjunction with Tewkesbury Historical Society, will try to share the experience vicariously by marking the main events month by month a century later. We shall feature these and some of the people involved. *If you wish to know more and “bust the jargon” then you can access www.ths.freeuk.com or visit the History Notice board at Tewkesbury Library. Look out for our special features starting in next month’s edition of Tewkesbury Direct.

WW1 commemoration evenings open their doors to the public The efforts of Tewkesbury Hospital during WW1 are to be celebrated in style this summer with four evenings of song, theatre and film around Tewkesbury borough. The FREE events, organised in partnership between The Roses Theatre in Tewkesbury and Tewkesbury Borough Council, invite residents to enjoy a half an hour performance by the talented Roses Youth Theatre, a short film and a reminiscence session; with the public welcomed to share family stories and memories about the war effort. The rural workshops follow The Roses Theatre’s successful theatre performances in April and will continue

its six-month project, together with 120 young people and community members, to celebrate the heroic work of Tewkesbury’s community hospital in WW1. The theatre has received a grant of £23,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund to help deliver the project. The events will take place throughout June and July in towns and villages across Tewkesbury borough from 6.30pm to 8.30pm, including Twyning, Toddington and

Gotherington – the first taking place at Maisemore Village Hall on Wednesday, 18 June. Entry will be free with some delicious refreshments provided. Tewkesbury Borough Council’s Lead Member for Health and Wellbeing Cllr Claire Wright said “I am delighted to announce these wonderful, historic evenings around the borough. It will be a real treat for all those who share an interest in WW1, and an opportunity for others to learn more about the

vital role Tewkesbury Hospital played." "Together with our local history groups and the Women’s Institute, we're extremely happy to be promoting the events and supporting The Roses Theatre in delivering its project." The Roses Theatre's Creative Producer, Developer and Fundraiser Sarah Blowers said: "Following the generous grant we received from the Heritage Lottery Fund and help in securing the venues from

Tewkesbury Borough Council, we have been able to put together these exciting and informative public events - and we just can't wait to showcase the talent of our Youth Theatre Group and continue to spread the word

about Tewkesbury Hospital's war efforts." For more information about the upcoming workshops, please contact Suzie Latham at The Roses Theatre on 01684 853072 or at Tpofficer@rosestheatre.o rg.

WORLD WAR ONE COMMEMORATION EVENT Councillors and Voluntary Groups are getting together to have a weekend of commemoration of the First World War on the 2nd & 3rd of August, pretty much along the lines of the 'Save Our Cross' day last year. Saturday will be a day in the Town Hall and in the garden, there will be last years re-enactment group with an 'Old time pub' in the Town Hall, there will be points of interest connected to WW1, a power-point display, Tombola, Raffles, market stalls, craft stalls and sellers, The Royal British Legion will be selling poppies and Remembrance Crosses, Teas by RAFA

and anything else that people have to offer that lets us know a little more about life in Tewkesbury and the surrounding area at that time. On the Sunday 3rd August, at 10.15 there will be a parade of dignitaries, uniformed groups and any others who wish to join in, with a small service of dedication around the Cross. After the end of the Parade they will open the Town Hall and garden again for similar activies to Saturday. On Monday 4th August there will be a small service around The Cross in recognition of the service of the men who served in WW1.

NEW TOWN CLERK Tewkesbury has a new Town Clerk, Tony Berne.

Tony, originally from Birmingham, brings with him a wealth of experience of work with local authorities, which include Birmingham City, City of London, and Borough of Croydon Councils. Tony tells us he respects our local councillors whom he says are all doing what they do in a belief that they can make their town better

and Tony thrives on facilitating those Council activities bringing them to fruition. Delighted to get the post, Tony said "Tewkesbury is a beautiful English town with a history to be envied. Its residents still show the fighting spirit forged on years of conflict and trade, and i am eager to get to work".

WE ARE NOW AN RAC APPROVED GARAGE Just over a year ago we were contacted by the RAC to ask whether we would consider being an Approved Garage for patrol breakdowns in and around South Gloucestershire. 䡵 Tony Hughes

It transpired that all their local patrol personnel had been asked to nominate a local garage that encapsulated their core values of value, customer service and quality. Their top nomination was us!

FREE COLLECTION AND DELIVERY TEWKESBURY AREA WITH COURTESY CAR IF REQUIRED

Since their endorsement we have received over 100 RAC member breakdowns in our area and we have been able to help many stranded motorists rescued from the M5. From our busines name it would appear that we only repair and service French cars. Not true, over 50% of breakdowns have been non French cars, only last month we had an Audi R10 towed in! If your car needs some special attention, regardless of make and model, why not give us a phone us and sample what has made our business a success. Tony Hughes, our MD, lives in Westmancote and will be happy to collect your car for repair or service. Please check our website and see what customers say about us. TEWKESBURY MEDIEVAL FESTIVAL Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th July 2014

CROWDS WILL FLOCK TO BRITAIN’S BIGGEST MEDIEVAL FESTIVAL It's the biggest and best medieval spectacular in Britain and is probably the closest you will get to experiencing real medieval life, writes Peggy Clatworthy. This year's Tewkesbury Medieval Festival which is expected to draw thousands of vistors to the town - takes place on Saturday 13th and Sunday 13th July, on part of the 1471 Battle of Tewkesbury’s site. As well as huge recreation of the Battle featuring around 2000 knights, archers, spearman, gunners and other characters, there are living history villages. There, families, including their children, live as 15th century armies on the march. You can also visit the sumptuous royal encampments of King Edward IV and Queen Margaret of Anjou. The busy and colourful medieval market has potters, armourers, costume makers and much more.

In and around the market you could come across jesters, dragons, minstrels, dancing girls and other colourful characters There is our falconer and his birds of prey, and if you are very brave, our barber surgeon with his gruesome – but not too serious – demonstrations of medical matters from the period. Adding to the delights is a magical story tellers garden, and the Bright Knight Tent with puppet shows and workshops and themed arts and crafts. You will find food stalls of all kinds and a massive beer tent with a range of real ales and that medieval favourite, mead. When the festival closes on Saturday you can make your way to

Tewkesbury's famous Abbey, for a re-creation of the storming of the Abbey, which followed the original battle, and very tongue in cheek trials and executions of the captured Lancastrians. To restore a gentle calm this is followed by Complin – the last service of the Monk's day. Entry to the festival is free, with a small charge for parking. The gates open at 11.00am and close at 6.00pm on Saturday and 5.00pm on Sunday. Details of accommodation including camping, just a short walk from the site, are available from the Tourist Information Centre 01684 855040 or email TewkesburyTIC@Tewkes bury.Gov.Uk. See www.tewkesburymedievalfestival.co. uk for more details.

POSITIVE THINKING with David Slater

DON’T WORRY: BE HAPPY The 92 year old, petite, smiling, proud lady is always dressed each morning by eight o'clock, writes local counsellor and therapist David Slater. Her hair is well brushed and her makeup perfectly applied. Quite wonderful really as this lady who I will call Mrs P is almost totally blind. She moved into a nursing home today as she was unable to live alone after her husband of 72 years passed away a short while ago. After hours of waiting patiently in the lobby of the nursing home she stood up and smiled when she heard someone say to her, “Mrs.P Your room is ready!” As she walked, arm in arm with the nurse, the nurse started to describe the room that was to be her home to her, careful not to miss any details. "Oh, I just love it !!!" said Mrs P, beaming broadly." I really love it !" “But, Mrs. P. You haven't seen it yet. Just wait.” “That has nothing to do with it, " said Mrs P.Happiness is something you can decide on ahead of time. Whether I like my room or not doesn't depend on how the furniture is arranged. What is important is how I arrange my mind. “I have already decided I love it. It's a decision I make every morning when i wake up. I have a choice. “I can spend the day in bed recounting the difficulty I have with parts of my body that don't work quite as they used to or eyes that don't see as they once did OR I can get out of bed and be thankful that some of me does work.

“Every single day is a gift and as long as i have breath I'll focus on the new day and all the happy memories I have stored away ready for this stage of my life.” She carried on, " Old age is like a bank account. You withdraw from what you have put in. So, my advice to you would be to deposit a lot of happiness in the bank account of memories. Thank you for your part in filling my Memory bank. Every day I have something to deposit.” She finished by adding, “Remember the five rules to be happy : • 1. Keep your heart free of hatred. • 2. Free your mind from worries. • 3. Live simply. •4. Give more. • 5. Expect less David Slater

POLICE NOTES with Sgt Henry Wright

Do you know where your children are in the evenings? I would like to start off with a word of warning as the school summer holidays are approaching. Virtually every evening officers are being called to the old mill at the Back of Avon where youths are entering the building and causing damage, writes Police Sergeant Henry Wright of Tewkesbury Police. Apparently this building has been described as the “In place to hang out” by youths attending a local youth club. Let me assure that this practise is extremely dangerous and it is only a matter of time before someone is seriously injured. I have just been

there myself and the whole site is strewn with broken glass, the floors are unsafe and stairs dangerous. The premises is difficult to secure by virtue of its size and location, the owners have secured the site but padlocks have been smashed from

the gates and boards ripped from the doors and windows. If you hear of any youths talking about this property I ask you to pass on this warning. I don’t want to be paying any parents a visit to inform them a child has been hurt.

URBAN WILDLIFE

Firstly I must thank everyone who attended our 30th Anniversary Open Day on 8th June and helped to make it a tremendous success, raising over £10,000 of much-needed funds, writes Caroline Gould of Vale Wildlife Rescue. It was a fabulous and for me, emotional day, the weather was great and a record number of people attended. We are very grateful to everyone who contributed and we hope to see you all again next year. Anybody living in a town or city will be used to seeing wildlife in and around their neighbourhood. Many people put out food for birds which encourages a wide variety of species to their gardens. As more and more of what was once prime, vital habitat for wild animals disappears under tarmac and concrete with the increasing amount of houses, schools and factories being built, so our wildlife is having to adapt to living their lives amongst us. At Vale Wildlife Hospital we are dealing with more and more

casualties of our modern day world, increasing numbers of birds caught by cats, hedgehogs picked up by the family dog and larger mammals such as foxes and badgers displaced by building work. One of our recent patients was ‘Ronnie’ the rook, a bird that caused quite a stir in the middle of Cheltenham. The unfortunate bird became entangled in netting that had been put above a shop to stop pigeons from roosting there. The RSPCA had been called to the bird, but

CANAGAN GRAIN FREE DOG FOOD NOW IN STOCK

because it was so high up they were unable to reach the bird without enlisting the help of the Fire and Rescue Service. They duly attended with a fire appliance and a long-reach ladder unit and, much to the annoyance of a few drivers and shoppers, the road was closed so that they could get their ladder up to the bird to rescue him. There was no alternative way of reaching the bird and it was just one of countless situations where human lives impact on wild animals, often with tragic results for the wildlife. On this occasion, although a few people were inconvenienced at the time, the outcome for

the bird was a success as the rook was released again after a few days of cage rest at Vale. Birds coming down chimneys, deer becoming disorientated in the middle of busy towns, gulls causing problems in cities, cats predating millions of animals, deer caught in metal railings. The list of situations involving human and wildlife ‘conflict’ is endless and will only get worse. We have to find a way of living in harmony with the wildlife that we share the world with. We have given the wildlife no choice but to adapt to living in our busy world so we have to adapt to having it here amongst us.

Local martial arts instructor Clive Harrison hosted a special training day in Tewkesbury, held in memory of one of his former taekwondo students. Hayley Nalepa, a third degree black belt and national champion, who was tragically killed in a road accident four years ago. The event at Tewkesbury Sports Centre offered the opportunity for martial arts students to try taster sessions and enjoy seminars in a wide range of martial arts disciplines with masters and instructors travelling from as far away as Devon and Cornwall. Special guest was Hayley’s father Steve Napela, who like Hayley is a third Degree Black belt and student of Clive’s. He was presented with a fundraising cheque for £250 which will go to one of Hayley's favourite Cancer Charities. Local clubs associated with Master Clive Harrison who took part were from Tewkesbury, Apperley, Longlevens, Brockworth, and Cheltenham.
