TOWN’S ‘BIG WEEKEND’ RETURNS It’s not just flowers that bloom in Spring

30 MINUTE WHILE -UWAIT SERVICE

Excitement is building in Tewkesbury as plans for this May’s ‘Big Weekend’ start to be revealed. Last year’s events included a walking parade, a river parade, bell boat racing, the Tewkesbury Bake Off, fairground entertainment and music and stalls around the streets. The organisers were able to raise a fantastic amount to donate to good causes, with cheques of £810 each going to Macmillan Cancer Research, The Town Mayor’s Charities and the Avon Navigation Trust. This year's event is being held on Saturday 2nd and Sunday 3rd May, and plans are afoot to make the weekend bigger than ever. Saturday will see a walking parade through the town centre with a theme of musicals, and fancy dress. Sunday features bell boat racing and a river parade themed on

Henley Regatta. New for this year is a dog show on the Vineyards. There are also events at the Watson Hall, and in the Town Hall gardens there will be activities for children. The river will be central to the festival, with duck racing, demonstrations by emergency services, boat trips and boats for hire. A riverside street market and entertainers around the town will add to the atmosphere too.

Last year’s event brought extra footfall into Tewkesbury, benefitting local business. Entries are now open for the bell boat races, and teams of eight are invited to take part. The organisers are also keen to hear from anyone who can offer support to make this year’s event a real success for Tewkesbury. MUD-NIFICENT EFFORT!

Fitness fanatics from Bredon’s Hardwick’s Gym & Tonic proved they are no stick-in-the-muds last month, when they completed the gruelling Devil Run. Adam, James, Chris and Tracey joined 4,000 others to tackle a daunting 8km obstacle course over rough terrain at Stanley Pontlarge. Over thirty barriers and challenges faced the team, including tyre walls, slip and slides, monkey bars, rope swings, mud and water pits - plus a giant wall to climb over at the end. Red kites back over Bredon Hill Red kites, once one of Britain’s rarest birds, may be breeding again in this area. Kites were at their most vulnerable in the 1900s, when only 12 birds survived in the Welsh mountains. Thanks to the Brecon Beacons National Park and the establishment of the Welsh Kite Trust, a conservation programme ensured the birds protection - and slowly they began to thrive again. These majestic birds of prey have since spread eastwards, and a substantial number of kites have made their home in the Chilterns. Red kites were first noted on the Gloucestershire/Worcestershire borders about five years ago, and for the past three summers one or two birds have been seen soaring above both Bredon and Dumbleton Hills. This year a pair have over-wintered and have been spotted regularly by keen observers. The large birds are identifiable by their unique forked tail and graceful flight with wings bowed slightly forward.

THE ESTAS determines the best estate & letting agents in the country through research carried out amongst customers who are asked a series of questions about the service they have received from their agent. This year’s competition saw 25,000 surveys completed by agents’ customers. Agents have been shortlisted in 22 regions around the UK. The regional and national winners will be announced by Phil Spencer, the TV Property expert at the 12th annual ESTAS ceremony at the Hilton Park Lane 17th April. Phil Spencer said “I think these awards help us all to focus on customer service for the

greater good of our own businesses as well as the wider industry. “We must all drive standards higher, raising the bar in terms of the quality of advice we offer and the level of customer care we deliver”. Simon Brown, who owns The ESTAS says “It’s client feedback which determines who is shortlisted and ultimately who wins that makes the ESTAS so valuable for agencies. “It takes a lot of commitment to enter the ESTAS and to make it to the shortlist is a great achievement in itself.” Alex Chesterman, Founder & CEO of headline sponsor Zoopla said “This is our sixth year of sponsoring the ESTAS and we are delighted to be once again supporting this key industry event. Chess Moves are based at 2 Barton Street, Tewkesbury. For latest property details see page 13 or visit www.chessmoves.co.uk

We continue our walk from the Black Bear on the west side of the High Street and we encounter Homeabbey House Retirement Complex, writes John Dixon.

CALL US ON

One is not sure of the value of the house on the frontage but the cherished part is spied through the archway, where lie the retirement apartments with their enviable views over the Ham - and some space for car parking. This space has been created from astute joining of the former ample gardens which once enriched their neighbour’s properties. The history of this somewhat bland development has been stimulated by photographs provided by Jean and David Green. Until 1958, it was a sedate residence of Surveyors, including the “portly figure” of W H Gray who absconded to South Africa in 1898 with £3k of public money – which leached down to his son Bertie, who had owned Northend

House (next door but two which had partly burned down in 1946). There is no sign of an alley in 1958, although one has been included in the 1985 development. It was soon after converted into a doublefronted shop; the invaluable wide entrance to the left has been maintained. The last tenant when it was demolished was “Jay’s” – according to the window scrawl; what was sold there? We can be sure that the present residents are as sedate – but much more honest! - as the surveyors who preceded them. " (Below) Homeabbey House in 1915 (J.Dixon)

PHARMACY MATTERS with Pam Thomas

Bras: getting the right support if you have breast cancer It is estimated that 1.6 million women around the world are diagnosed with breast cancer each year, writes Pam Thomas. Thanks to modern medicine, a high percentage of those diagnosed do beat the disease. But what of the implications to individuals following treatment, which could involve the complete or partial removal of one or both breasts? Mastectomy is a word every woman dreads hearing, but support groups such as Maggie’s do a tremendous jobs through providing advice to cancer patients. It is a good idea to buy a suitable bra for immediate use following surgery. One suggestion is a front fastening bra, such as those made by Royce. These are cotton with a little stretch on the back and popper fastenings; easy to put on. If you are concerned about possible infection, then there is a version with antibacterial silver threaded through. There are some good bras on the market for ladies who opt for recon-

structive surgery following mastectomy. Initially a firm, supportive bra is required. A good option is a nonwired sports bra which will hold the breast firmly while they heal. A predicted cup size would be required by the fitter, to help find the right bra for use following reconstruction. Later, when a prettier bra is wanted, those with stretch in the cups often fit better than those made with rigid material. There are some very pretty lacy bras in the shops, but do seek advice on their fit and suitability. As summer approaches, t-shirt bras are sought after. There are non-wired smooth cup bras on the market if the advice is not to wear underwired styles. More information will be supplied next month. Pam Thomas Joyce Brooks Lingerie

STUNNING PLANT IMAGES ON SHOW An exhibition of forty photogravures by Karl Blossfeldt are now on display at Nature in Art Gallery and Museum. Dating from 1932, the artworks - entitled ‘Wundergarten der Natur’ - were edited by the artist and published in the year of his death. The exhibition gives an opportunity to view a set of Blossfeldt’s signature close-up images of plants and flora. They are on display until Sunday 19th April. Nature in Art Gallery and Museum is just off the A38 between Tewkesbury and Gloucester.

WILDLIFE NUMBERS As we, and wildlife rescue centres up and down the country are preparing for this year’s busy season, I thought it might be an appropriate time to give a bit of information about the numbers of each species that we deal with annually at Vale Wildlife Hospital, writes Caroline Gould of Vale Wildlife Rescue. Many people, although they have heard our name, are unaware of the scale of the operation in Beckford and just don’t realise how many casualties actually come through our doors. To give everyone an insight into the numbers we deal with: total number of mammals/birds treated in 2014 – 4,041 (2013 – 3,875, 2012 – 4,421). The 2014 figure includes: 19 sparrowhawks, 68 blue tits, 6 hares, 790 hedgehogs, 32 pheasants, 104 foxes, 39 swans, 270 blackbirds, 54 badgers, 71 starlings, 96 collared doves, 39 roe deer and 44 buzzards. We also take in a few unusual, non-wildlife patients, usually on a short-term basis in emergency situations. In 2014, these included 1 cat, 2 dogs, a turkey, 3 red-foot tortoises, a rhea, 5 red-eared terrapins, a monitor lizard, a blue-tongued skink and 5 bearded dragons. We would prefer not to deal with animals such as these as they use our much-needed funds which we rely on for the care of wildlife, but often there is no alternative because there is nobody else available to help. The most unusual and certainly the casualty

" Minty the wild boar at Vale Wildlife Rescue Centre that has created the most publicity so far this year is Minty the wild boar piglet. Minty was brought in during March, picked up in the Forest of Dean, dehydrated, hypothermic and emaciated. She was very close to death when she was rescued. We don’t know why or how she came to be on her own, away from the sow and the other piglets in her litter, but there is a cull of boar going on in that area so the chances that her mum had been shot are quite high. The two things that I am always trying to impress on people as being THE most important life-savers for collapsed animals, are warmth and fluids. Minty was given warm fluids by subcutaneous injection within minutes of arriving at Vale and

following a check over to make sure she had no injuries, she was put in a heated brooder, wrapped in a warm blanket. Within a couple of hours she was up on her feet and wanting to get out of the brooder – an amazing difference. We think that Minty was about 10 days old when she was rescued and within a couple of

days she was drinking a pig milk replacer out of a bowl and running round her indoor enclosure, in between sleeping in a dog bed underneath an infra-red heat light. Unfortunately she will not be able to go back into the wild due to the legislation surrounding wild boar, but she will have a safe home for the rest of her life either with us or at another centre that already have wild boar, so that she has company to live with. WALKIES! Local lady Hannah Reynolds has just launched her new dog walking and pet care business.

Hannah has lived and grown up around animals her whole life, for the last five years she has worked in rescue kennels with a wide range of animals, as well as growing up on farms. She currently owns her own rescue Border Collie who she trains in obedience, bikejor and cani-x. Hannah says “This is my first business, I wanted to do it because since owning my rescue Collie it has been very hard to find someone who I can trust with his behavioural issues and current training. Having worked with many different breeds, temperments and behavioural issues I have experience to walk dogs that others in this field turn away from.” This is how Active Animals was born. Reliable, flexible, experienced and affordable

dog walking and pet care service for Tewkesbury and the surrounding areas. Services include pet sitting, dog walking, home visits, puppy visits and small animal care. Hannah hoped to provide an experienced bright fresh and young pet care service. Hannah comment “I have a lot of experience owning my own rescue dog, completing my bronze citizen dog training awards, as well as completing my level 3 extended diploma in animal management at Hartpury College in 2013.” Hannah also provides a home/pet sitting service where she will stay in your home whilst you are on holiday so your pet doesn’t have to go through the stress of going into kennels and can stay in their own home.

NEW LIFE FOR CLASSICS, BY THE EXPERTS Brothers Roy and Alistair Hitchman have opened new restoration service and repair workshops Abbey Classic Cars Ltd at Unit 2 Oakfield Close, Tewkesbury Business Park, GL20 8PF. With a combined fifty five years experience in the motor trade, Roy and Alistair can tackle any job from complete and partial restoration, engineering and sourcing hard to find parts. With reputable contacts built up over the years Abbey Classic Cars can source some of the best paint, upholstery, trim, welding and chroming experts around. Roy tells us that rare panels can even be made by time served craftsmen on an English Wheel*. A bespoke service is offered tailored to suit any budget to service, maintain and repair any vehicle from scruffy to concourse. As you can imagine classic car service and repair can be very different to modern day vehicle servicing with various unique factors to take into consideration such as: Age of vehicle, low annual mileage, long term storage, parts availability, and extensive history of previous work completed by both professionals and enthusiasts.

Roy says “Looking after a classic vehicle properly can be similar to looking after a patient where full consideration needs to be given to both historic and current circumstances. Also many

classic vehicles take part in various auto sport activities and this too requires special attention.” If you are looking for a classic car then Roy is happy to advise, seek

and buy on your behalf from private, trade or from some of the auction houses such as Bonhams, Brightwells and Coys. Furthermore if you have a vehicle that you want to sell or have something that has languished in a barn for years do give Roy a call on 01684 295272.

Remember if you want just a wing mirror or a complete restoration

Abbey Classic Cars are waiting to help.

All aboard the Easter Eggspress! Once again, the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway will be running its Easter Eggspress train service on Easter Monday, 6th April. There will be plenty of fun for all the children with activity books, Easter games, and Easter bonnet competition and lots more. To make the day even better, normal entry prices apply so that children under five are free and over fives can spend all day at the railway for £7.00. Later on this month at the award-winning GWR’s Toddington Railway Station HQ, a

'Wartime in the Cotswolds' event will deliver an authentic experience of railways in the 1940s. Visitors can step back in time, pack up their troubles in their old kit bags and smile, smile, smile. A full weekend of nostalgic 1940s-themed activities is planned and everyone is invited to take a trip down memory lane. Wartime in the Cots-

Spring Kittens Here at Folly Gardens Vets we are officially Cat Friendly. Our clinics are accredited by the International Society for Feline Medicine. This means we adhere to a charter to improve cat welfare and that we have taken extra effort to give our staff additional training and adapt our practices to reduce stress for cats, and their owners. We even have a ‘Cat Only’ clinic on a Thursday night over at our Barton Road Branch. The spring brings kittens! In order to effectively reduce the number of unwanted cats in the UK and protect your pet from accident and disease, we strongly recommend you have your cat neutered. Both males (castration) and females (spey) can be neutered from around 4 months of age. Un-neutered cats are more at risk of picking up dangerous and life threatening infections such as feline leukaemia and feline immuno-deficiency virus.

and all other special events visit the website www.gwsr.com or call 01242 621405.

Discounted Cat Neutering in April and May THROUGHOUT APRIL AND MAY we are discounting our cat neutering. Females are £40 to be spayed, and males £30 to be castrated. A massive discount! Please call to book your FREE pre-neutering consultation with our vets, so that we can health check your cat or kitten, and book them in for their operation. Females only £40 Males only £30 Please phone to book in your cat today!

They are also very good at getting into scraps with other cats, fighting over mates – which can result in some nasty injuries. Sadly, every year we also deal with a great many fatalities, where un-neutered cats have roamed and have been hit by cars. So neutering really makes sense.

RAMBLING AROUND with Jack B. Walker

IT’S BLUEBELL TIME!

Without doubt one of the most popular walks I have written about in Tewkesbury Direct over the past six years is the trek to see the wonderful show of bluebells in Beckford Coppice, writes Jack B. Walker. Depending upon the arrival of Spring, the best time to view the spectacle is mid-April to mid-May.

! The path through Beckford Coppice, known locally as ‘The Bluebell Woods’ - pictured in late April 2014.

! Distance: approx. 3 miles; moderate ascents. ! Car Parking: with care in Conderton village. ! Public transport: 540 bus from Tewkesbury to Conderton (no service Sunday/Bank Holidays) ! Refreshments: The Yew Tree pub, Conderton. ! Map not to scale: OS Sheet 190 recommended.

Park in the lane at the side of the Yew Tree Inn at Conderton. Walk up the lane, and as it bears left, carry on straight ahead up a rough track (1). When you reach a gate and barn ahead of you, keep on the stony track as it bears right and sharply upwards, (2), and continue ahead until you reach the cross tracks (3). Turn right and walk down the hill along a broad sandy track known locally as the ‘Yellow Brick Road.’ At the next cross tracks (4), take the path on your left which leads into the woods. Follow the path down to the stream and cross the footbridge. This section of Beckford Coppice is famous for its bluebells: please keep to the trail to protect them. Follow the path up the bank and through the woods and cross over a stile. (5). Turn right and walk along the edge of the

wood, to reach a small gate. Go through and carry on ahead with the fence to your left, then bear right as the wellwalked path descends through the field. At the bottom of the field skirt a thicket (6) and bear right up a lane between some hedges. The route now rejoins the Yellow Brick Road (7), so bear right and walk up the hill to return to point (4). This time, take the path on your left and walk along the edge of a field. At the bottom of the field, after a descent, bear right to a small gate at the other side of the stream (8). Go through and up the slope, keeping the fence to your left, reaching a row of trees. Keep straight ahead over a stile into a meadow, with Conderton Manor’s gardens on your left. Cross over the next stile and walk ahead to reach the lane; turn left and walk down the lane into the village.

LEGO MAN Local Tewkesbury ebayer, Rob King, has sent Lego all over the world, so when an enquiry closer to home was made, it was no surprise, but the reason was.

Having already previously sold two Lego Taj Mahal’s, the largest Lego set made with five thousand nine hundred and ninety two parts, the enquiry for the third one was more unusual. This third one has now been sold, not to be played with, but to

appear on stage in the West End of London as a prop in a new production call The Three Lions. The reason is one of the characters in the play is David Beckham who famously said if he was not a footballer, would love to have worked for Lego and own his own Taj Mahal. The play is a comedy based on a hotel meeting between David Beckham and HRH Prince William and David Cameron before the 2018 World

Cup Proposal. Anyone interested in looking for Lego sets and rarities should visit Robs Railway Shop at Toddington Station on open days.

STUART LEADS THE WAY IN HIS FIELD One of the most common type of metal detecting finds is the coin. Coins were designed to endure usage and made of metals and alloys to stand the test of time.

This month detectorist Stuart Borley beings some fine examples he has found recently that span many centuries. The first dates from the range of King Steven

Stuart has uncovered this iron wood splitting wedge, approximately 100 to 200 years old it was used for splitting logs with a sledge hammer. In the two photos, we see the find before de rusting and afterwards. Cleaning was done by placing it in a hot fire reaching red heat causing the rust to loosen, when cool, it can be wire brushed and rustproofed. It is likely that the wedge would work as well as it did many years ago.

REDUNDANCY TO RACES, HATS THE WAY TO DO IT

This time last year Bella Bow Bella Hat & Headdress designer Rebecca Jeal was working as a marketing assistant when she was faced with redundancy. It provided her with the push to explore the world of millinery and set out to launch her hand made hat and headdress company. So to see her hats at The Cheltenham Festival glimpsed on Channel Four earlier this month was a real excitement. She was also thrilled to design for model Katie Sinclair of Nine Management Models who was at ladies day

CLEAN BURNING Local heating engineer, Ben Bowers, is pioneering some of the latest green heating technology.

Woodburning biomass boilers are attracting government financial support as wood burning is virtually carbon neutral. The scheme is called The Renewable Heat Incentive and contributions will be paid to both domestic and commercial users that have the system installed. Paid quarterly over seven years the subsidy should cover most of the installation costs. A “Green Deal” pre assessment is made on the property to decide on what heat output is needed, taking insulation and cavity wall insulation into account. The boilers are automatically or hand fed with wood pellets and there are log burning options too. The efficiency of the stoves is incredible leaving virtually no residue (see our photo) and can be in clean line modern designs with viewing windows for effect. Pellets are cheap and widely available and a ton should cost around £250 meaning they are excellent value for money. Ben is qualified to design, install and maintain these systems and has full OFTEC, HETAS, Gas Safe and MCS credentials to ensure it is all done to the highest standards. For those who may wish to have an installation, Ben tells us that there are financing companies available who specifically finance projects like these.

TEWKESBURY PROPERTY MUCH SOUGHT AFTER SAYS LEADING LOCAL CONVEYANCER A residential conveyancer who oversees many house moves each year at Tewkesbury based DF Legal, says the local property market looks set to remain buoyant.

Lyn Gardiner of DF Legal said: “In recent years Gloucestershire and the surrounding regions have gained in popularity as a great place to live and this looks set to continue.” “Programmes like Location Location Location have shown many a family trying to get away from the rat race for a slice of country life, which has seen many people with no geographical links to the region move in,” she added. Her comments come at a time of the year when the housing market traditionally hots up. She said many of the influx into the region were people who find they aren’t getting much for their money in the south and are lured by the comparative affordability of the region. “To put this in perspective the most recent survey from the Halifax showed house price averages across the

country being in the region of £193,000, and whilst it is hard to find exact figures for this region, from data we can gather, we are above that figure, but not by a great deal,” she said. She added that indications from various surveys showed 2015 would remain a year where house prices stay in line with inflation. “This means many moves during the year to be based more on lifestyle needs rather than anything else,” added Ms Gardiner. She warned that a

property purchase is a highly stressful matter and those involved need to make sure they do not cut corners. “Buying property is generally the most expensive acquisition a person will ever make, so risking cheap conveyancing, which is dealt with in a call centre environment, many miles away could prove costly if it goes wrong,” she said. “Quality conveyancing is relatively cheap in the overall picture of buying property and can give you assurances that

everything has been done correctly. It gives that peace of mind that is needed at a very stressful time.”

POSITIVE THINKING with David Slater For as long as I can remember I have loved stained glass windows. I first sang in a Church choir when I was 8 years of age in Upton on Severn. Later I was a member of the Cathedral Choir of Wells in Somerset and later still Choirmaster of the Parish Church choir of Wedmore, also in Somerset. Now I frequently pop into our glorious Abbey here in Tewkesbury. In all four places I can

enjoy the beautiful stained glass, wonderful to look at when the sun hits them and their brilliance shone through. I used to visit a friend in the south of Gloucestershire who was a spiritual healer. In his consulting room he had two panels of stained glass set into one of his windows. One panel was of a dove with an olive sprig in its beak and the other which always delighted me was a rainbow.

The rainbow always took my breath away when the sun shone through and the stained glass was able to give its best impact-making show. The sun shone through and the image was cast onto the wall of the room. I don't have a stained glass window but in my lounge and study I have cut crystal pendants hanging in the windows and when the sun shines I have mini rainbows being cast on the ceilings and the walls of my rooms. I can remember my friend saying " I love the rainbow as it reminds me always that to make rainbows you need sun and rain". For me the rainbow is a great motivator. It gives me motivation when life presents challenges. It reminds me that we need to have

some bad times to be able to truly appreciate the good times. To really appreciate the light we need to have spent some time in the dark. On days when life is good the beauty of the rainbow never fails to make me think " Well, things don't get much better than this !" In life we sometimes need small reminders to stay focused on what is really important in life ; to remember the things that we can, if we are not very careful, so often take for granted. On the difficult day when the sun does not shine through, the crystals do not break up the light into rainbow patterns on the wall BUT there is the knowledge that, behind the clouds, the sun still shines and it is only a matter of time before it breaks through

and the rainbow can once gain be seen in all its glory. Even at the most difficult times of our lives the rainbow is there and will come out to shine. If its raining in your life or heart at the moment don't give up hope. The sun WILL shine. The good days WILL come. Just remember - To make rainbows you need sun AND rain. It is then that we get the full experience and benefit of this wonder of nature. “Rainbows introduce us to reflections of different beautiful possibilities so we never forget that pain and grief are not the final options in life.” “There are still blue skies and rainbows and days bathed in sunlight. There are colourful

shade trees filled with sweet bird songs. And there are wishing stars in the heavens as well as angels in God's service. So lift up your eyes. Refuse to be unhappy.” Enjoy YOUR rainbow. Keep it in your mind and let it lift your spirits as it has mine over the years David Slater, Clynical Hypnotherapist and Counsellor

THE ROSES THEATRE DEVELOPMENTS Now that the final plans have been submitted for The Roses’ much awaited refurbishment, due to take place this summer, staff at the Sun Street venue are familiarising themselves with how the building is going to look, both inside and out, when the work is complete. Having remained virtually unchanged since it was built in 1975, The Roses has been a constant and familiar landmark in the town centre for 40 years. Often described as the jewel in Tewkesbury’s crown, there is no denying that over the years the sparkle has dulled ever so slightly as the passing years have left their mark. Happily though, since the launch of a fundraising campaign last year, The Roses has now secured nearly half a million pounds worth

of funding, and shortly before Christmas was able to appoint architects Poole Philips of Pershore to plan and execute the redevelopment. Trustee of The Roses Cllr Adele Carter, pictured right with Director of Marketing & Development Beckie Smith, is optimistic about the plans: “It’s tremendously encouraging to see such progress in such a short space of time. It’s very exciting to see the plans in black and white, and be able to visualise the

improvements to the building - in just a few short months we are going to see such a difference.” The plans are on display in the foyer of The Roses, and staff are on hand to talk to any customer who would like to know more about the forthcoming changes. Significant changes will include the installation of a lift, the refurbishment of the toilet facilities and the replacement of the roof. The Roses also plans to expand its catering facilities to be

able to serve locally sourced light bites before performances, and install a small coffee bar downstairs. It’s not too late to get involved; The Roses still needs help if it is to raise the £800,000 it needs to finish the project. Anyone wishing to contribute to The Roses’ 40th Birthday Campaign can either call into the theatre, or call Director

of Marketing & Development Beckie

Smith on 01684 853070.

WELL DONE TWYNING The Village of Twyning were proud to present cheques to three well deserving charities on Friday night (13th) in the Village Inn.

At the beginning of the year, the Twyning Village Community Charity Committee consisting of a band of local villagers continued the tradition started some years ago created with the aim of raising a fund via several annual village events which has helped enhance community spirit whilst having fun in the process. They held several race nights, a games/quiz night and an all-day cricket event during the year raising over £3,000 which chiefly they donated to their carefully considered appointed charities for the year, British Heart Foundation, Cloud9 and Cobalt. We were pleased to present these cheques to their relevant representatives who took a moment to inform us of what it meant to their relative causes and how the funds were likely to be used.”

WI CENTENARY BATON CONTINUES ITS JOURNEY WITH A HORSE THEME

THE ECLIPSE

Local Photographer Jack Boskett captures the recent Solar eclipse in the skies over Tewkesbury. An eerie chill was noticed by many as well as a profound reduction in birdsong. The event certainly made the writer feel insignificant in the broad scheme of things.

The WI Centenary baton continued its journey through the Gloucestershire Federation today. Starting at Beckford, it made its way on horseback to Kemerton, where it was transferred to a horse and cart. The cart is a vintage product of Cotteswold Dairies, and clip-clopped on its journey to Bredon. There, it joined several hobby horses in a horse box to be transported to Mitton in Tewkesbury. At Mitton Manor PreSchool tots welcomed the baton and galloped around on hobby horses whilst WI members treated them to homemade cakes and a rendition of horsey, horsey. Emma Wild, President of Mitton WI said “It’s such an honour to have the baton making a stop with us. As a very new WI this is a real treat and we're so pleased we could involve the children in the community.” The baton then made its way on foot to The Roses Theatre, and then via wheelbarrow with a pretend horse to Tewkesbury Abbey and finished off on the Tewkesbury Groups leg, being transported via vintage Cotteswold Dairy float at the Stonehills

Roundabout for a photocall with Tewkesbury Mayor, Cllr Christine Danter. Everyone passing was then treated to treated to a rendition of Jerusalem on the roundabout sung by roughly 70 WI members and supporters.

Viv Ebbage, Bredon WI said “We wanted to include the wonderful horse roundabout and keep to the horse theme during the batons journey through our patch. It's been an exciting day and so wonderful to celebrate 100 years of the

Women’s Institute.” The baton then crossed the River on a SARA (Severn Area Rescue Association) rescue boat and continued its journey through Gloucestershire. Photographs by Jack Boskett Photography.

POLICE NOTES with Acting Police Inspector Henry Wright

INTERNET SAFETY TIPS

Mobile phones, laptops, tablets - all connected to the internet. Facebook, Twitter, Skype and email….in some form or another, almost all of us are linked to the World Wide Web and it’s hard to escape it, writes Police Sgt Claire Wright. It’s opened up communication channels, allowed us to shop online and so much more. There is, however, a more sinister side to using the internet – and the question is are you doing enough to protect yourself? Action Fraud are the lead on fraud investigations and by following a few simple steps you can minimise the risk and protect yourself. Never give any personal information (name, address, bank details, email or phone number) to organisations or people before verifying their credentials. Many frauds start with a phishing email. Remember that banks and financial institutions will not send you an email asking you to click on a link and confirm your bank details. Do not trust such emails, even if they look genuine. You can always call your bank using the phone number on a genuine piece of correspondence, website (typed directly into the address bar) or the phone book

to check if you’re not sure. Destroy and preferably shred receipts with your card details on and post with your name and address on. Identity fraudsters don’t need much information in order to be able to clone your identity.

Make sure your computer has up-to-date anti-virus software and a firewall installed. Ensure your browser is set to the highest level of security notification and monitoring to prevent malware issues and computer crimes. If you are given the option when shopping online, sign-up to Verified by Visa or MasterCard Secure Code. This involves you registering a password with your card company and adds an additional layer of security to online transactions with signed-up retailers. If you receive bills, invoices or receipts for things you haven’t bought, or financial institutions you don’t normally deal with contact you about outstanding debts, take action. Your identity may have been stolen. Be extremely wary of post, phone calls or emails offering you business deals out of the blue.

If an offer seems too good to be true, it probably is. Always question it and don’t be afraid to challenge it. If they are genuine they won’t mind! If you have been a victim of fraud, be aware of fraud recovery fraud. This is when fraudsters pretend to be a lawyer or a law enforcement officer and tell you they can help you recover the money you’ve

already lost. There’s no need to be scared of the internet but a common sense approach and the above should assist in protecting you. And remember, if you have been a victim of crime you should always report it. If we don’t know about it, we can’t investigate it! Sgt Claire Morgan, Tewkesbury Police

VERMIN HUNTERS OF The prescription charge debate THE 16th CENTURY PHARMACY MATTERS with Peter Badham

As readers will be aware, some patients have to pay for their prescription items, writes local pharmacist Peter Badham. This system was introduced in 1952, when patients them had to pay one shilling per prescription form. In 1965 the scheme was abolished , but then reinstated in 1968 at two shillings and six pence per item. I remember in 1971, the charge rose to 20p, and the level of bad feeling from patients as a result. What those people would think of todays charge at £8.05, I can only imagine! There no prescription charge in Wales, Scotland and Northern Is land and it does not

seem very fair to me that there are charges in England. We are supposed to be part of a United Kingdom! So what is my view ? I think the whole system needs a major review. Why should patients have to pay? If the NHS cannot afford this cost, then reinstate the charges elsewhere. If it is accepted that some patients have to pay, then at the very least the rules need a major overhaul to be fair. I think all patients on long term conditions, whatever the condition is, should have

30W LED PANEL 50%

ENERGY SAVING

the prescription free. Is if fair to expect a patient suffering from cancer, blood pressure, heart condition, or asthma to have to pay, when other patients with diabetes (for example) get all of their medication free? I would put in threshold of six months, so if a patient was on the treatment for this time, it would become free thereafter. In the past there was the concern that free prescriptions would driv e more patients to their GPs, but now we have the Minor Ailment Scheme in Tewkesbury.

! Peter Badham Local patients can have a range of medication supplied free of charge, subject to criteria. Please contact me on 07837 513492 or come into our pharmacy for more information. Peter Badham

Long and freezing winters, bad harvests, rising food prices and a growing population were behind the anti-vermin laws brought in by Elizabeth I in 1566. The Vermin Law said that rewards should be paid at fixed rates on a whole range of animals, and that the money was to be raised from landowners and farmers. Many kinds of wild creature now had a price on their head. You can meet a Tudor rat catcher and discover the harsh realities of problem pests in 16th century Britain at Tewkesbury’s John Moore Museum on Saturday 4th April in Church Street. There are two sessions, 10am to 1pm and 2pm to 5pm. Tickets are available at the museum: for more information call 01684 297174. Visitors can also explore the 15th century Merchant’s House and meet a Tudor housewife whose home is plagued with pests!

A grand procession through the streets of Tewkesbury is being planned for Sunday 12th July, as part of the town’s Medieval Festival. Lots of community groups and entertainers are expected to take part in the parade, which will set off in the centre of town at 11.00am.
