Just Between Us

H

ow do you create a treasure? The more you learn about people’s lives, their special commemorations, their joys and sorrows, their connections to community, the Rabbi Leigh Lerner interlacing of their family ties, the greater the treasure you have created. What Bette Shulman knows about the members of Temple Emanu-El-Beth Sholom, that is, indeed, a treasure. For 36 years she has helped members to remember yahrtseits, to celebrate simchas, to bring their wedding party down the aisle. She has answered the phone and said, “Mazal tov!” when she heard good news. And sometimes she has had to say, “Oh, no! I’m so sorry,” when bad news came across the wire. Bette knows our members names and faces, and always greets people with a smile. She has ever tried to accommodate the needs of the congregants of Temple, always with understanding, sympathy, and an attitude that says, “We put you first.” Bette’s mind not only contains a treasure of knowledge about the congregation, but she herself is one of the treasures of Temple Emanu-ElBeth Sholom. After 36 years with Temple, 36 years in which she played a pivotal role in our office, anchoring the desk that saw to the needs of so many, Bette is retiring. Like you, I have relied on her for so much information, for so much help, for so much background history in how we do things at Temple that I know her presence will be missed. With you, I wish Bette well. With you, I celebrate her many contributions to our Temple life. When the Board wanted to honour Bette, she modestly declined any special celebrations. In its wisdom, the Board offered to establish an endowment fund in Bette Shulman’s honour. The Rabbi does

not vote at Board meetings, but when this measure was proposed, I could not help but enthusiastically raise my hand in favour of it. The very next day, Loren and I contributed to this new fund. What a privilege to say thank you in this way! If you would like to honour Bette Shulman for her 36 years of service to Temple, simply call the office, and you can charge your contribution to the “Bette Shulman Family Fund”. I have no fear that Bette will be short of important things to do. She has modeled adult learning, receiving her bachelor’s degree from Concordia not so many years ago. She continues to go to classes and to learn, to enjoy fiction, and to spend lots of quality time with her lovely family. I also suspect we’ll see Bette at Temple from time to time, not only for the “set days” of our calendar, but back in the office occasionally, as we try to sort out how to respond in such and such a situation, and Bette will arrive with the records of our past fully in mind, a treasure to share, and with a positive suggestion as to what must be done. To Bette’s family, I say thank you for releasing her to our congregation every weekday for 36 years. May you now have more time to treasure your mother, grandmother, and aunt. To Bette Shulman, I offer my thanks, respect, and very good wishes. Her accomplishment is great. Her work is stored up in the eternal treasury of Jewish life, for she has furthered Jewish living at Temple and in Montreal through the gift of her warm and caring spirit. Rabbi Leigh Lerner

or institutions like our Temple, it is common knowledge that sources of fundraising are a perpetual problem and a cause of much concern to those involved BUT there is another equally important cause of concern that seems to be similarly difficult to satisfy and that is an abundant pool of people ready to step into lay leadership roles. At the moment we are urgently looking for Temple members to head up “Social Action”, “Membership” and “Communications”. These are all Brian Grant areas of vital concern to the continued relevance and running of our Temple. If one of these areas of action resonates with YOU, please contact ME or SHELLIE ETTINGER A.S.A.P. We are blessed to have a new TORAH SCHOOL COMMITTEE headed by Craig Bromberg. With this amazing group of Temple members with young families whose energy, innovation and involvement leaves one breathless, the future for OUR Torah School looks very bright indeed!!!!

This brings me to Ilana Kuska, our Torah School Principal who is leaving us at the end of this school year to go back to her first love, teaching at university level and to pursue her PH.D. We are so indebted to Ilana, she took over our Torah School when it was in a sorry state and nurtured it to its present health. We wish Ilana every success and look forward to seeing her around Temple. We are taking a hard look at Temple’s present role in the community, its, goals, objectives and our future role. We’re listening to our membership by setting up focus groups to be held over the next couple of months. These focus groups will allow members to reflect on their thoughts and feelings about the congregation, what it offers and what members might envision for our Temple’s future. We have many new program and outreach initiatives being planned for the fall, so keep an eye open for news of them. WATCH OUT FOR OUR NEW WEBSITE……….. COMING VERY SOON!!!!!!!! NOTICE TO VOICE READERS! In an effort to be more “green”, Temple is now distributing the Voice in bi-monthly issues, six times a year. Next Voice: August/September 2010 Issue Deadline for all submissions, Friday, July 2, 2010 at NOON Please note that tickets may be issued by the City of Westmount for parking in the restricted areas of Elm and Wood on any Friday night service.

Wishing you all a sunny and warm spring! Brian Grant.

ell, spring has definitely (or shall I say finally!) arrived. The sun is shining, flowers are beginning to bud, and the grass is getting greener day by day. I would like to welcome back our snowbirds and hope that each enjoyed their winter months in “warmer” climates. As Executive Director I have learned so much over these last two years. I have learned that Temple is more than just a house of worship. It is also a social meeting place for so many, a place where members feel comfortable to drop in for conversation, take part in the various programs or just simply to see what’s going on at the time. Temple is your congregational home. As a member of this congregation we ask you to confirm your commitment by getting involved in various aspects of Temple life – become a volunteer S h e ll i e E t t i n g e r on a committee, take part in events, attend religious services, plan your next family celebration at Temple, Executive Director the list goes on. There are so many options available and I would be more than happy to discuss them with you! Maintaining this congregational home requires financial support as well. In the next short while you will be asked to renew your annual contribution, which I ask you to please pay as early as possible. This will help us save mailing costs and reduce the time required to collect the late contributions. If you are experiencing difficulty or require some flexibility with your payments, please contact me. Together we will find a solution to help you through the situation. I would like to take this opportunity to wish Ilana Kuska, our Torah School principal, much success as she embarks on a new adventure. Ilana, who will be leaving us in May, has made a significant impact on the growth of our Torah School. As many of you are aware, Bette Shulman will be retiring at the end of June. I have only had the pleasure of working with Bette for two years and in that short time she has taught me so much about the Temple family. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Bette for sharing her knowledge with me, guiding me as I continue to learn my job, and for always being ready to answer “just one more question”. I hope your busy retirement schedule will allow you time to visit often. I extend my very best wishes for a relaxing and restful summer. Shellie

I figured I would stay put this winter and pretend to be on holidays by putting on my yoga clothes after work when it was already dark, and zipping into the steamy confines of my hot yoga class…it was almost as great as being on a steamy beach and sweating in the tropics without fear of sunburn! Hence, this winter passed like a dream, (between bouts of ‘Mad Men” and many movies!), quickly and relatively snowless, filled with Temple work, program planning, Voice and Web work, meeting, greeting and eating! With spring in our hearts, we are all gearing up once again to host a new slate of events and programs for all members which you will find within these pages. Included is the grand Centennial Gala commemorating Temple’s century in Westmount, a work of deep commitment by all the Gala committee members who undertook each step of the planning with depth and rigor, and will feature an honoring of the Presidents, Joseph Kaiser’s magnificent voice, a delicious cocktail and dinner, silent wine auction and more, all to benefit Temple in the grand fundraising tradition. It is sure to be an extraordinary event!

Two of our beloved Temple staff will be leaving us very soon to pursue the next adventure in their lives; Bette Shulman, (who shares the same birthday as me!), will be retiring after 36 years of work, friendship and devotion to Temple. A page of tributes and photos in her honor has been dedicated to her in this issue…we will miss her gentleness, patience, sweet voice and companionship at lunch… love and blessings to you dear Bette, and Thank you for all you have brought to Temple over the years! Ilana Kuska has only been with us for 3 years at the helm of Temple’s Torah School, but her path of study will take her in another direction. We shall miss her sunny disposition and spirit of collaboration which never failed to bring resolution, refinement and reward to those of us who worked closely with her…Good Luck dear Ilana, we shall miss you! I have the happy luck and pleasure of visiting my big family in Israel from mid-May to mid-June this year, after many years! In the meantime I look forward to meeting with Temple family at our various events and programs! A very happy and joyous spring to all the gardeners, travelers and adventurers among you! From the Torah School Principal Here are some observations I’ve made over the past three years about Temple Torah School. They’re in the form of questions, much like the ones used in the Passover Haggadah. They’re not in any particular order but they’re all true. What makes this Torah School unique and unlike other schools? Torah School is fueled by people who care about their students. Teachers who want to share their knowledge Ilana Kuska and personal experiences through Jewish stories and song. Students who listen and ask questions about what they learn. Friendships that last past school hours; children laughing in the halls. How do we celebrate at Torah School? We celebrate often. Every Saturday is special at Torah School. We learn, sing, snack on cookies, learn some more and pray. Some of us join the other congregants for High Kiddush where we eat a meal together and discuss Jewish life; one experience at a time. Holidays are special at Torah School and are every ones favourite celebration. What are the future plans for Torah School? Torah School has spun itself into a modern learning facility using savvy new age technology: the Internet, MP3s, DVDs and email. Through it all, the teachers and tutors have developed and maintained a personal relationship with their students. Hebrew songs can be heard in the classrooms and artworks decorate the school’s hallways with colour and meaning. Some things are best left alone. Something new will ignite a spark of possibilities. As my term as principal of Torah School comes to an end this month, I would like to pay tribute to the devoted staff that has been the heart and soul of this special school: Bracha Boxer, Andrea Fieldman, Aviva Fuchs, Shoshana Sebag, Yaacov Sassi, Kelly Shackman, Luisa Sinacore and Masha Volpo. A heart felt thank you to Jennifer Douek and T.A.s Gaby Samek and Sean Winikoff for their contribution and support. Lastly, my gratitude and respect to our spiritual leader Rabbi Lerner and the Temple administration, staff and education committee for their genuine support. As the school year comes to an end, the teachers and staff of Temple Torah School wish our students a summer filled with fun and adventure. Shalom. A Call to Parents at Temple: Add Some Jewish Learning and Stir! As I write this, the first green shoots are showing and we are all celebrating Passover and the beginning of spring. Soon, the school year will be winding down and, with it, the whirlwind of activities, projects, committees, and “grands spectacles” that characterize the lives of our children. And then, before we know it, it will be time to be planning for fall 2010 and creating a new – and equally busy – weekly schedule! It may feel like it’s a long way off, but we all know that September will be around the corner soon. This year, as you contemplate that schedule, ask yourselves whether you’ve made room for Torah school and the family Shabbat services that come along with it. Why Torah school? In some ways it’s easy to find a reason not to include it in what’s already an overloaded schedule. Maybe Friday night dinner feels like enough Shabbat time for your family. Maybe you plan on getting around to finding out about Torah school when your kids are nearing Bar or Bat Mitzvah age. Maybe you went to a traditional Jewish day school, while your spouse didn’t grow up Jewish, and neither of you is sure that Torah School at Temple is right for your kids. Maybe your kids get some Jewish education at their public or private school during the week; or maybe they’re growing up thinking that Temple is somewhere you go for High Holidays. If some of these reasons resonate with you – or if you have other reasons not to have signed your kids up for Torah School yet – it’s time to think again! Every Saturday morning, Reform Jewish children from all over Montreal turn up at Temple to learn, sing, create, reflect, and celebrate together. They come from all kinds of families, with all kinds of backgrounds. Some are quick to recognize Hebrew letters and enjoy adding a new language to their repertoire; for others, singing enthusiastically with Yaacov is the highlight; for still others, the fun is in learning to combine celebration with critical questioning of Torah stories and holidays in the Jewish calendar. From kindergarten through to Confirmation, these are kids for whom Judaism is a regular part of the week. And they’re kids whose parents join in for Shabbat services from 11:30-12:00, making Temple one of the regular stops for the family car. Temple’s Torah School is the only supplementary school in Montreal open to all who wish to make Reform Jewish education part of their family lives. As they grow at Temple, and participate in a school based on the pillars of worship, study and tsedaka, our children develop their sense of identity and responsibility as Reform Jews. Please plan to join the Torah School this coming September. We’re keen to welcome new kids and their parents, and to continue to sustain a dynamic and inspiring community at Temple. Our girls and boys are tomorrow’s Reform Jewish women and men – and we all have lots to learn together, every single week! KIDS KORNER As I sat through the last 2 night of Seders many questions went through my mind… but the one that stands out the most was ‘How did my mom do this??’. What I remember the most about Seders growing up was my grandfather mumbling through what seemed like hours upon hours of a completely Hebrew iteration of the service and a knot in the pit of my stomach from hunger. But isn’t that how it is supposed to be? If we were lucky, The Ten Commandments were on TV after dinner and all the cousins could stay up late to watch. What I don’t remember was my mother running around (never sitting in her seat) and catering to my every whim. However I do remember her constantly telling me and my sister to ‘shhhhh’. As my 2 children, 6 and 2, ran amok, required constant attention (coloring books only keep them occupied for so long) and were hungry, I wondered ‘How is this night different from any other night?’. Not entirely different at all, except that there were 20 other people at the table! While screaming ‘Zaida, Zaida, Zaida’ by a 2 year old is normally adorable, this time it was not so cute as my father tries to run the Seder. In the end everything melted away as my 6 year old son was able to recite the first of the 4 questions in Hebrew, happily sang the chorus of Dayenu and watched in awe as the cup of Elijah was sipped out of as he was let in the front door. I hope that everyone had a great holiday and please look out for a Kids First Shabbat event sometime this summer. Marla Greenspoon, Co-Chair Kids First Committee and Mom

MoFTY News Hamantashen for Haiti: Sweet Success! When the idea which was eventually to become Hamantashen for Haiti came my way, I was excited. I was excited because I jump at any opportunity to either bake or socialize, and this project promised plenty of both. I was also excited because organizing is my lifeblood, and this was a neat opportunity to try something new. Then, of course, there was the double-whammy good deed; providing urgently needed humanitarian aid overseas while simultaneously providing a service to the community. I was also excited because the project was brought to me by Maya Smith, who is not only a fascinating and motivating person, but she’s also a MoFTY alumni (so, obviously, she’s really really cool). The opportunity to work with some really great MoFTYites was a great gift as well – thank you Tasu and Gabykins! The process of getting everything ready was quite an experience. The big baking day was just that – absolutely insane. Gabriella, Gabrielle and I spent a solid nine or ten hours in Temple’s kitchen, aided by a come-and-go crowd of about twenty or so volunteers throughout the day. While one team mixed dough, another flattened and cut circles while another still stuffed and filled the Hamantashen. We had a group sitting outside, rockin’ out to music and hand-decorating the bags for packing. Another group cut and prepared chilled cookie dough. As for me, I manned the ovens. Some responsibilities are just too great. We used 96 sticks of butter, about 25 kilos of flour and four industrial ovens to get everything done, never mind the sweat, tears and love. We were all pretty frantic, unless I’m just projecting. Still, when testing-time or selling-day came, it was all well worth it. 600 Hamantashen and 2’000 butter cookies later, we raised over three thousand dollars! Plus, I mean, those pastries were delicious. Please do not skip over this paragraph. There are some people I would like to thank because they truly deserve it, and I would like for their names to be read. If you can, say them aloud, or to the person next to you. Sing them, shout them, make them known. These are modern-day heroes, and I salute them. A warm thank you to my co-organizers; Maya Smith, Gabriella Morningstar-Mizrahi and Gabrielle Samek. Many thanks to all those at Temple who supported this project; Maria, Peter and Ricky, the office staff, the everlovely Anita Bensabat and, of course, Rabbi Lerner. All praise be to those who experienced life in that kitchen (MoFTY and Friends!); Gabriella Morningstar-Mizrahi, Gabrielle Jacobs, Rosie Behar, Sara Behar, Sabrina Dabby, Tanya Greenberg, Ricky Friedberg, Karel Asha, Kristen Drummond, Jonathan Mitton, Josiah Henderson, Samuel Felix Harris, Jérémie Hans Nicolas Bédard-Wien, Melissa Teitelbaum, Brianna Lydon, Vanessa Bassal, Leonid Fichman, François Pagé, Ariel Shapiro, and Nick Pang. From the bottom of my heart, many thanks. I love you all. I would be remiss not to equally thank those who supported us through their advance Hamantashen orders. A very special thank you to Ronnie Black for his very generous contribution! Morty Lober, Ella Feig, David Abramson & family, Judith Peters-Levine & Barry Levine, Natalie Hollinger, Natalie Michaud & Joseph Ribkoff, Reg Weiser, Rabbi Leigh Lerner, Shannon Coates, Nancy Sherer, Brain & Vivian Grant, Alexandra Giorgi, Rachelle Shubert, Jérémie Bédard-Wien, Nancy Maklan and Freda Woolley also get a MoFTY-sized thumbs up. Our honourees offered us a view into how nursing has changed over time and the life’s work that nursing represents in our community. In our 5th annual Janine Fisher endowed program, we had the opportunity to view the film created to celebrate 60 years of nursing and also nursing education at the Jewish General Hospital and Beatrice Victor, Marlene Levine, Ellen Tissenbaum and Marsha Ptack provided insight into both the historical development and current issues and challenges. This yearly event started in 1997, when Vivianne Schinasi Silver, who was the head of women’s studies at John Abbot College formed a committee at Temple to share a presentation on the Women of Valor from the Jewish Women’s Archive celebrating women in our history. The Jewish Women’s Archive is based in the United States and information is available at http://jwa.org/exhibits/wov/ Over the years, the committee has nominated local honorees who express our shared community values. In addition, the committee has had a role in planning and participating in the services during the special Shabbaton. Several women have had the opportunity to read Torah during these services which have been an opportunity for shared moments of joy and reflection and exceptional music. The events are open to all who celebrate Jewish Women’s History Week. The committee works throughout the year in planning for the next year’s events beginning in the summer and going through the fall and winter leading to the event usually held in March. We have generally followed a shabbaton format that includes a Friday evening service and oneg, a morning service, a luncheon and a lecture.

B’nai Mitzvot, May/June/July 2010

We congratulate our B’nai Mitzvot and their families on this signal occasion in their lives. We look forward to them becoming members of the Confirmation Class and serving the Jewish, religious and community cause with devotion and commitment. A l e x a Z i mm e rm a n - F e ldm a n

Daughter of Shoshana Zimmerman and Andrew Feldman - Date of Bat Mitzvah: June 26, 2010 at 10:30 am I attend Beechwood Elementary School in Pierrefonds, QC I most liked being part of all of the planning for my Bat Mitzvah, and having all the attention focussed on me. Before I started my Bat Mitzvah training, I did not know any Hebrew, and the task seemed impossible. So what I learned is that if you set your mind to something, you can accomplish it, even if it is difficult. Kindness to animals, many people abuse, and are cruel to them. It hurts me when I see an animal being maltreated; I find this extremely cruel and unfair for the poor animals, which cannot defend themselves. I am the first girl in the Zimmerman family to have a Bat Mitzvah, and I hope that this becomes a tradition since up till now in the family only boys use to have Bar Mitzvahs. My interests are music, dance, drama, volleyball, football, dress designs and shot putt. Here’s something I want the congregation to know about me that the questionnaire doesn’t ask: I am a peer mediator and I’m going to leadership camp; when I get older I want to start a rescue center for animals. I would like to give Tsedaka to: the S.P.C.A. Since the S.P.C.A isn’t putting their animals down, and therefore they need more cages, I would like to help them purchase cages and food for animals in need.

Son of: Teena and Bill Pye - Date of Bar Mitzvah: May 29th, 2010 at 10:30 am I attend grade 7 at Fisher Park Middle School in Ottawa. What I liked most about preparing for my Bar Mitzvah was working with my former Hebrew school teacher Howie Osterer who now lives in Israel (via Skype™). One important lesson I learned is Bar Mitzvah homework is harder than it looks, but it’s worth it. The one mitzvah that I would emphasize in my Jewish life is Not to stand by idly when a human life is in danger. Having a Bar Mitzvah is important to me because it is continuing an ancient pact with G-d that helps define the Jewish religion. My favorite school subjects are wood working, gym, science, history and geography. My favorite hobbies are building robots and other mechanical objects. My favorite sports are ice hockey, box lacrosse and field lacrosse, my favorite pastimes are hanging out with friends and watching Habs games. The things I want the congregation to know about me are that I play goalie in hockey for Nepean. In lacrosse I play point and defense for the Nepean Knights. I would like to give Tsedakah to the Easter Seals because they help handicapped children. B r a n d o n R u d o lp h

Son of Maria and Bruce Rudolph - Date of Bar Mitzvah: June 5, 2010 at 10:30 am I attend Selwyn House School. What I liked most preparing for my Bar Mitzvah is knowing that I have learned how to read in Hebrew and also my torah portion with all the history .One important lesson I learned from by Bar Mitzvah studies is that if you try hard it pays off. If there is one mitzvah, commandment, that I would emphasize in my Jewish life, it is to honor my family and help and look out for them. Having a Bar Mitzvah is important to me because, I have learned a lot about my religion, and I also want to continue the traditions. My favorite school subjects are French and Gym. I also like basketball, soccer and being part of the school teams. I would like the congregation to know that I like to go to summer camp where I get to see my other friends and play lots of sports. I would like to give Tsedakah to The Children's Hospital to help those who are in need. D e v y n J a c o b K o lta i

Son of Steven Koltai - Date of Bar Mitzvah: May 1, 2010 at 5:00 pm I attend Centennial Academy in NDG and I’m in the 7th grade. May favourite pastimes are to go snowboarding, watching new movies and other really awesome things. I really love to snowboard because I’m amazing at it. My favourite subject in school is music. I enjoy playing the drums. This is my first year as a drummer and I am pretty good. What I like the most about studying for my Bar Mitzvah was learning how to chant my torah portion. It means a lot to have a Bar Mitzvah and is important o me because I get to read from the actual torah. Noa all the kids get to do this, but I do. The mitzvah I would emphasize in my life is to honour my parents. My parents are always there for me, and I will always be there for them. Something I love is to take vacations alone with my dad. We always have a BLAST on vacations. Without my dad I would have never been here. A very important lesson I learned is to never ever, ever, give up. In anything you do, just never give up! I hope that one day when I have my own family I can share the same Jewish values and continue the tradition. 10 | May / June / July 2010

Son of Joe Klopot - Date of Bar Mitzvah: May 1, 2010 at 5:00 pm I attend Westmount high School in Westmount. The thing I like most about my Bar Mitzvah was that I had the chance to learn a new language. One important lesson I learned from my Bar Mitzvah studies is perseverance. One mitzvah, commandment, which I would emphasize in my Jewish Life, is charity because it helps the poor and the hungry. Having a Bar Mitzvah is important to me because my father and grandfather wanted me to do this. My favorite subject is gym and math because they are both fun and easy. Here’s something I want the congregation to know about me is that at first I didn’t want to do my Bar Mitzvah but after a while it started to grow on me. I would like to give Tsedakah to Mada because I have given there before.

Daughter of: Kathy and Mark Kaufmann - Date of Bat Mitzvah: May 29, 2010 at 5:00 pm I attend F.A.C.E In Montréal. What I like the most about preparing for my Bat Mitzvah was the Singing. One important lesson I learned from my Bat Mitzvah studies was that sometimes in order to achieve something great, it takes lots of hard work. There is one mitzvah, commandment I would emphasize in my Jewish Life, honor your mother and father. Having a Bat Mitzvah is important to me because I get to be more like a part of the Jewish Community. My favorite activities include swimming, soccer, singing and drawing. I would like to give Tsedakah to the Southern Poverty Law Center; a non profit civil rights organization dedicated to fighting hate and bigotry, and to seeking justice for the most vulnerable members of society.

Mark Sorin

Son of Mikhail Sorin & Inna Rubina - Date of Bar Mitzvah: May 1st, 2010 at 10:30 am I attend College Jean-de-Breboeuf in Montreal. I love playing different kinds of sports, my favorites are: soccer, tennis, volleyball, ping-ping and swimming. What I liked most about preparing for my Bar Mitzvah studies was to successfully learn how to chant my haphtarah even though it was very difficult at times as well as learning about my Jewish heritage. One important lesson I learned from my Bar Mitzvah studies is that you have to study a little bit everyday instead of studying a lot the day before you have your lesson. If there is one mitzvah, commandment that I would emphasize in my Jewish life, it is to honor my parents. Having a Bar Mitzvah is important to my family and Russian heritage. When my parents lived in the Soviet Union, it was disallowed to have a Bar Mitzvah, to celebrate Jewish holidays and even go to synagogue. Therefore, on the day of my Bar Mitzvah, I will follow the tradition started by my sister and proudly stand on the Bimah before my parents. Something I want the congregation to know about me is that I am very grateful to the congregation, Rabbi Lerner, my teacher Braha as well as my family who have supported me through this journey and I am happy to celebrate this important milestone with them. I would also like to give Tsedakah to the CJA Federation

Max Chemtov

Son of Robin Chemtov and Gail Issenman - Date of Bar Mitzvah: June 12, 2010 at 10:30 am I’m a seventh grader at Royal West Academy, where my favorite subjects are music and math. My favorite part about preparing for my Bar Mitzvah was learning how to read in a language that uses a different alphabet. An important lesson that I have learned from my Bar Mitzvah studies is that if something is worth doing, you have to work for it. If there is one mitzvah that I would emphasize in my Jewish life, it is Tikkun olam, to heal the world. Having my Bar Mitzvah is important to me because it’s the step to being able to participate in a service. I chose two organizations to give Tsedakah to: Spread the Net, which gets mosquito nets to help against malaria; and Generations, which feeds children in Montreal.

Samantha Burko

Daughter of: Joy and Brian Burko - Date of Bat Mitzvah: July 29, 2010 I attend Laurenhill Academy. I enjoyed learning about Jewish laws and traditions while preparing for my Bat Mitzvah. One lesson I learned from my Bat Mitzvah studies is that no matter how bad you think things have gotten in comparison to what the first Israelites had to go through, nothing’s as bad as it seems. One commandment that I would emphasize in my Jewish life is to love your neighbour, so don’t do to others what you wouldn’t want done to yourself. Having a Bat Mitzvah, at least for me, means to finally begin my life in the Jewish community. My favourite school subject is English and I love to read. Finally, I would like to give Tsedakah to Mada; a Jewish organisation formed to collect money to give to Jews in need. 11 | May / June / July 2010

(BaR and BaT MitzvOTs cont.) S h ay n a B r o o k s

Daughter of: Tanya Smith - Date of Bat Mitzvah: Saturday, May 22 at 10 AM I go to J.P.P.S. What I like most about preparing for my bat mitzvah was Torah School, because I get to learn new things about the Jewish history and I get to see my friends. One of the most important i learned from studying for my bat mitzvah was responsibility! If there was one mitzvah or commandment that I would emphasize in my Jewish life it would be to honour my parents. My mother worked very hard organizing my bat mitzvah and for that she deserves my respect! Having a bat mitzvah is important to me because I am recognized as a young lady in the Jewish religion. I’m a Jamaican Jew! Not all black Jews have to come from Ethiopia! I’m Jewish because my maternal grandmother is Russian Romanian and my paternal grandparents are Jamaican .My family decided to keep the religion in the family to keep the faith! My favourite subject in school is French because I have amazing teachers named Mme.Nelly and Mme.Elana. They make it easier for me to understand. I would like to give half of my bat mitzvah money to CJA its one of my favourite organization because every year they come to my school and give us little box to collect money to help Israel. Having a bat mitzvah means everything to my papa so I would like to thank him for keeping faith in me “thank you papa”

Son of: Joy Berkson and Michael Korenberg - Date of Bar Mitzvah: May 8, 2010 I attend Selwyn House School. What I like most about preparing for my Bar Mitzvah was re-learning how to read Hebrew with a kind and caring teacher, Masha Volpo One important lesson I learned from my Bar Mitzvah studies is there is no life without freedom. And ....Study more..... It could never be too much! If there is one mitzvah commandment that I would emphasize in my Jewish life, it is: Respect my parents. Having a Bar Mitzvah is important to me because: Reading the Torah makes me a man. A proper Jewish man. The tradition of having a bar mitzvah is really important to my family and me. I feel privileged to be able to have a bar mitzvah. Many Jews throughout history were not able to. My favorite school subjects, hobbies, sports or pastimes are: English, Science, Math and Music, taking apart computers and putting them back together; wake boarding, snowboarding, skiing, biking, swimming, exploring the country, surfing the internet, hanging out with my friends. I want the congregation to know that I could listen to music 24 hours a day. I could beat anyone in speed texting! I would give Tsedakah to the NAT foundation at the Jewish General Hospital, to CJA, and to planting trees in Israel. The NAT foundation raises money to help fight cancer. It was created by my mother and father and a couple of other people in honor of a really close family friend named Natalie Toussaint who passed away in 2004. CJA does a great job to help many underprivileged people. I collected money throughout the years and will continue to.

Son of: Ariella Lang and Tassos Dionisopoulos - Date of Bar Mitzvah: May 22, 2010, 5:00PM I go to Lower Canada College, on Royal Avenue in N.D.G. I found the Judaica classes on Wednesdays to be very interesting and informative, as we could discuss religious and non religious alike. One important lesson I learned from my Bar/Bat Mitzvah studies is that everyone is entitled to an opinion and even if it not something you agree with, it is something you must respect. This should be acknowledged inside and outside the classroom. If there is one mitzvah commandment that I would emphasize in my Jewish life it is to seek peace because this has been a challenge for Jewish people in the past and something we should strive for in the future. Having a Bar/Bat Mitzvah is important to me because it starts to form my Jewish identity in the world. My favorite school subjects, hobbies, sports and pastimes are basketball, badminton, running, reading, science, history, math and drama. I would like to give Tsedakah to the Shield of Athena. This is a non-profit women and children shelter for the abused. They offer services in several languages including English, French, Spanish, Arabic, Greek, Romanian and Armenian. They have their own shelter, as well as a helpline in several languages.

“In recognition of Bette’s longstanding dedication and commitment to Temple Emanu-El-Beth Sholom, the “Bette Shulman Family Endowment Fund” has been established. Bette would like this fund to be earmarked for Bar/ Bat Mitzvah education. Members wishing to contribute to this fund in honour of Bette may do so by contacting the Temple office.”

Bette Shulman’s was the first face we saw when we arrived 27 years ago. We still remember the tour that she gave us of the building; carried out with warmth that assured us we had come to the right place to establish our Jewish home for prayer and community. When we got married in 1985, Bette signed our wedding contract as a witness. She’s been a part of our lives ever since, through every life cycle event, sharing all of our moments. Bette, we love you and wish you many wonderful moments of your own in retirement. Heather and Bob Bowden 14 | May / June / July 2010

“Mansfield Park” by

Lawrence Hill

Jane Austen

Hill’s historical novel about slavery traces the shocking, yet inspiring life-long experiences of a woman kidnapped into lavery early in her life. This gripping, dramatic tale explores an indomitable will, and depth of personal and collective struggles for freedom.

The character filled, “Cinderella” style tale of Fanny Price, a poor and timid young woman living at her Uncle Thomas Bertram’s home, Mansfield Park. Among her rich cousins, only Edmund whom Fanny secretly loves appreciates her intelligence and judgment. When the charmingly dangerous Crawford siblings move to the neighborhood, Fanny faces a series of challenges, eventually triumphing through her clear observation, honest selfreflection, and moral courage.

Cemetery News Spring Report

J a n e A d a ms R o t h s t e i n

As my husband and other golfers worry about the condition of the golf courses this spring, my concern turns to the condition and maintenance of our cemetery properties.

Mount Royal The filming of the cemetery scene in Mordechai Richler’s “Barney’s Version”, starring Dustin Hoffman and Paul Giamatti, unfolded in our section last summer. The film’s Location Department requested and financed the clearance and removal of all the brush between the upper and lower sections, which to our great benefit made the upper section visible from below, and the lower section visible from above. This created a magnificent

view from both directions, creating the overall illusion of a much larger space. It may interest you to know that our very own Rabbi Lerner was asked to take the Rabbi’s role in the movie, but declined due to time restraints. All of the older sections were cleared and seeded last year, in order to extend the grassy areas. Eternal Gardens I am happy to announce that the flowers this year will be purchased and planted by Magnolia Inc., the landscaping firm that looks after Mount Royal. We are confident that this will solve the many of the problems we experienced with the flowers over the past few years and that it will make a significant difference in both the Temple Emanu-El and Beth Sholom sections.

Jews and their non-Jewish spouses may be buried together. There, we are in the midst of a complete re-landscaping project. The back section has been cleared and reshaped. Mature trees and shrubs have been planted in order to define the entrance and walkway. The planting work will continue this year in order to bring this area up to the standard that we strive for in all of our properties. SPECIAL CEMETERY NEWS~ THE FAMILY COUNCIL, IS IT FOR YOU? If your answers to eight or more of these questions are “no” or “I don’t know”, you may want to consider a Family Council:

• Do you find time to take care of family relationships? How? • Do you know the consequences of neglecting the emotions in the family? • Do you know your family values? Can you name them? • Are you willing to designate an annual meeting for family relationships? • What are your family strengths? • What is each family member’s greatest strength? • Can you handle the different needs of younger vs. older family members? • Do you have a family mission statement? • Have your individual family members taken charge of their lives? • Are your individual family members happy? • Are your family strengths evident? • Is your human, intellectual and social capital increasing? • Is your family capital stronger than your family liabilities? • Do you encourage, support and expect competence from the next generation? • What have your children learned from you by your example? • Do you know how to get started providing family wealth education? • Should you do it alone? • What is your legacy? For what will you be remembered?” 1 20 | May / June / July 2010

SPECIAL CEMETERY NEWS~ THE FAMILY COUNCIL, IS IT FOR YOU? (cont.)

The Eiser family meets semi-annually as a family council, a meeting of all family members in a facilitator monitored environment with a published agenda and of course minutes. While the concept of a family council is not a new one, it is rather interesting. The following is an account by Leslie Eiser of their Family Council. Victor and Leslie Eiser are long time Temple members, who have three children and two grandchildren. I was asked by our cemetery chairman how cemetery plots got on the agenda of the Eiser family council. My uncle died, and because the family plot purchased by my grandfather had been filled, he was buried in the same cemetery, but at a considerable distance from the family group. This got me thinking about a family plot for future generations of Eisers - so I requested, through our facilitator, that this topic be added to the next family council agenda. During the discussion, I was pleased to discover that my children, and their significant others, were absolutely in favor of a establishing an Eiser family plot in Quebec, despite the fact that some of my children are currently living at a significant distance. I also learned that they wanted to be sure that non-Jewish spouses would be allowed, and that several of them were considering cremation as an option. Most surprisingly, as a family we decided to get a larger family plot, rather than a smaller one. See what you can learn when you just ask the questions? As a result of that family council meeting, I was assigned the task of determining what options were available in Montreal. I did the research, and brought that information back to the next family council meeting so that the family could decide how to proceed. It took 12 months to gather the information, present it to the family council, and get a group decision, but in the end the Eiser family has purchased 12 grave sites at Lakeview and all because of our family council structure.

“FEATURES OF A SUCCESSFUL FAMILY COUNCIL”

2

Successful families find ways of turning informal systems of reaching consensus and compromise into a Family Council that in one form or another incorporates: • A regular meeting schedule. • A co-coordinator. • Minutes (especially important for keeping track of decisions). • A means of communicating between meetings. • A role in the structure for every member of the family. • Projects that engage individual commitment, and make a real contribution to family and business goals. • The family’s collective values, traditions, sense of history and humor. This absolutely defines our family council!

Generally we plan our meeting away from traditional holiday times. Travel is too difficult, and the holiday itself is distracting. The idea of a family council meeting is to build bonds between family members, and to allow for discussion of family concerns in a non-threatening environment. My experience with holidays is that they generally don’t foster that kind of free-wheeling, positive experience. That said - this year our family council is meeting just in time for the first seder, and my husband’s 60th birthday. The best plans of mice and men.... References: 1.
