Welsh Medical Technology Wales has a long and distinguished history of industrial innovation and achievement. We have around 330 companies operating in the Welsh bioscience sector, including health technologies, whose combined turnover is approximately ÂŁ1.3bn per year, with the sector employing around 15,000 people. Wales has a strong business base, globally respected academic institutions, and world-renown sporting and cultural venues. MediWales is the industry-owned forum, established to service the life science organisations in Wales. Over the last seven years, MediWales has become the sector representative and central point of contact, influencing Welsh and UK sector development strategies and providing active routes for member companies to access clinical and academic expertise. Part of MediWales's role is to act as a signposting and business support service for its members. It is similarly happy to assist international contacts in sourcing commercial and collaborative research and development partners in Wales.

BioWales: thriving in adversity BioWales 2010 comes armed with renewed vitality: despite the recession, current statistics show that the Bioscience sector in Wales is thriving. Contributing over ÂŁ1.3bn to the Welsh economy, with over 330 businesses involved, the industry employs more than 15,000 people. This sector has a lot to shout about and BioWales is the perfect flagship to showcase its successes. The first BioWales conference held in 2002 - a small, but ambitious affair - has grown into what is now one of the largest bioscience conference and biopartnering event in the UK. Spanning two days, BioWales plays host to a range of activity: there are presentations from world-renowned speakers, a

brokerage session with one-to-one meetings, workshops on dedicated topics, with a trade-show exhibition running throughout. This multi-faceted conference strives to be 'fit for purpose' and is reformatted year on year to reflect and adapt to the needs of industry.

This year's major change is the introduction of workshops to the programme. Delegate feedback indicated that companies want a stronger interactive element to the conference, allowing them to discuss topics that potentially underpin their success in the market.

Companies also stated that gaining access to finance has become increasingly difficult in current economic times. In response to these concerns, the Welsh Assembly has created three workshops dedicated to funding and finance. The first workshop - run by the Assembly's Research and Development Advisor, Lisa Wheatley - is titled 'Funding opportunities from the EU Framework Funding Programme'. This session will advise businesses on what FP7 funding is available, how to access it and how to write successful proposals. The second session, titled 'Finance' will be co-run by Brenig Preest from Excalibur Group and Meurig Watts from the Welsh Assembly Government. This session will discuss funding opportunities in

Wales such as Flexible Support for Business (FS4B) and the Academic for Business (A4B) programmes. Funding is also available through Finance Wales and Excalibur. The final workshop - 'Inward Investment Opportunities' - will give an overview of the sector, highlighting the skills and sector support available to companies. The organisers also responded to delegate feedback by restructuring the brokerage sessions. These have been reconfigured to enable more one-to-one sessions between organisations, and also to ensure that the right people talk to each other. The Brokerage activity is central to the BioWales mix, running throughout the two days. It is also a part of the conference that has

exponentially grown year on year: 2009's brokerage had over 350 meetings, up from 225 the previous year. Coordinating this impressive set up is Dr Sharon Thomas, the Welsh Assembly Government's Healthcare and Life Science Specialist at the Department of Economy and Transport. She described the new 'accept and decline' system for the brokerage event and why it is being implemented 'It all starts with an initial call for interested parties to take part via online registration.' Those seeking brokerage meetings are linked to Bio-partnering registration through the EU Enterprise Europe Network (EEN). The EEN facilitates technology transfer throughout the UK and

Europe, bringing together those seeking or offering technology opportunities, as well as supporting access to Europeanwide research funding frameworks. Sharon continued 'Each organisation submits a technology profile, which can consist of an offer or request for technology, know-how or expertise. All profiles then get entered into the online catalogue. Approximately two weeks before the conference all registrants are asked to view the catalogue and select other organisations that they'd like to meet with. In the past, once a request had been made for a meeting that would be automatically entered into the meeting schedule, however feedback from last year indicated that at times there was a missmatch between companies something that we are keen to

avoid. This new 'accept or decline' system allows the requested company to either accept or decline the meeting depending on their requirements. This makes sure that every company only has a schedule that is 100% worthwhile to them.' Sharon's dedication to perfecting BioWales's brokerage process has been catalysed due to the deals and collaborations that have occurred since the last conference. 'In just the first six months alone, as a result of the brokerage, licensing deals have increased by 100%' Sharon continues, 'There has also been a significant rise is R&D applications under collaborative grants. The brokerage event is very successful and these results show a genuine need and purpose for it to grow and continue.'

BioWales is fully supported by the Welsh Assembly Government, who contracted MediWales to deliver the 2010 speaker programme. Working with Sharon and her team, MediWales has devised an high profile line up including sessions on the following topics: translational research; stem cells industrialisation for drug development and therapy; point of care diagnostics; cancer genetics; and “futurewatch” - an introduction to what's hot and new in bioscience today. The headline session - stem cell research and regenrative medicine - is currently very high profile across the UK, but especially in Wales. The session also headlines Stephen Minger, head of research and development for cell technologies at GE Healthcare and recently featured on the BBC Horizon programme: ‘Fix Me’ (November 09).

Dr Sharon Thomas on BioWales 2010 Tell us a little about the history of BioWales? BioWales started as a small conference in 2002, centred on bioscience research in Wales, to allow academia and industry professionals to network. This initial conference had 170 delegates and was a great success. The next event in 2004 attracted even more delegates, and BioWales has grown year on year. What’s planned for BioWales 2010? BioWales 2010 will be our biggest conference to date. After listening to feedback from last year, we have introduced new workshop sessions over the two days. We have booked full sized stands in a larger exhibition area, as we are anticipating a high number of delegates. We are also offering a technology brokerage service on an accept/decline

basis. Last year the brokerage service proved very popular and generated over 350 meetings. Who is speaking at BioWales 2010? This year’s programme features a mixture of UK and International speakers, including Sir Martin Evans, who specialises in knock-out genes and has inaugurated a new spin out company. He has done stem cell work with key industry figures, including Steve Dennet, Charlie Archer and the dental school at Cardiff University. What does BioWales offer the Welsh Lifescience industry? BioWales is the biggest bioscience conference in Wales. The conference profiles internationally and locally renowned speakers, attracting a wide range of delegates from Wales, the wider healthcare and lifescience communities from the UK and beyond.

This makes it an excellent opportunity for high quality networking and profiles exciting new developments in lifesciences. What can Biowales 2010 offer companies? It gives Welsh bioscientists the chance to promote themselves and their organisations on an international stage. International companies in turn will have exposure to the Welsh organisations, and develop an understanding of what Wales has to offer. It will allow people from outside of Wales the chance to gain access to Welsh academia and NHS professionals, as well as information such as licensing, collaboration opportunities and FP7 funding. IBW are supporting the programme, giving Welsh companies the opportunity to access assistance and advice on international trade.

13 The NHS Partnership with Industry/Academia Award went to Dr Jane Lewis ( Podiatry department of the Cardiff and Vale University Healthboard). The Podiatry Department - at Cardiff and Vale University Health Board collaborated with Huntleigh Healthcare in Cardiff in the production of the Dopplex Ability, a device for identifying peripheral arterial disease (PAD) – a prevalent but often missdiagnosed disease. This device addresses three needs: to improve the identification of PAD, the quality of referrals, and improve cardiovascular morbidity and mortality.

shorter appointment times and increases patient through put. It also allows for earlier diagnosis and intervention for lifestyle changes, which can lead to treatment of risk factors resulting in fewer inappropriate referrals for costly vascular consultations and duplex scanning. Another knock-on effect is the reduction in the number of hospital admissions and amputations with a derived reduction in the pressure on surgery and intensive care capacities at vascular surgery departments; fewer premature deaths would be expected.

The device works via the simultaneous inflation of blood pressure cuffs, which obviates the need for the patient to be rested and considerably reduces the assessment time. Consultations regarding clinical need, patient need and equipment design between the Podiatry department and Huntleigh Healthcare have been ongoing throughout the development and testing of the product. Key design inputs have been fed into the project to determine ease of use, acceptability and reproducibility in a clinical environment.

He set up the prize winning Initial Police Learning & Development Programme (IPLDP) to address the local police’s lack of understanding of mental health issues and services. Through the scheme, student police officers within Dyfed Powys Police attended a six day placement with the mental health services, learning about Mental Health First Aid and engaging with staff, patients, patient user groups and professionals in the unit. Learning firsthand the patients’ own experiences, the police have been applauded for a more positive attitude towards them. Student officers have a pre-arranged time table of 2 days learning about Mental Health First Aid along with a 4 day placement in the mental health unit covered by their Base Command Unit. This enables the officers to engage with staff, patients, patient user groups and professionals in mental health care. It involves them in all aspects of mental health provision and allows them first hand access to patients’ experiences and services provided by the Trust.

DTR Medical DTR Medical – the rapidly growing specialist in sterile single-use surgical instruments – is seeing a significant rise in enquiries from many parts of Europe, the Middle East, and beyond, underlying the growing need for high quality disposable equipment. DTR Medical believes there are several factors influencing the increase in sales for sterile single use equipment. Firstly, single-use disposables reduce the risk of crosscontamination. Complications like surgical site infections and extended hospital stays are minimised, which lowers costs and reduces potential litigation. Secondly, disposables rule out reprocessing – the need to clean reusable instruments. Reprocessing is a difficult and timely process, often leading to delayed patient throughput and raised costs from high manual handling rates. Another positive with single-use disposables is that they don’t need constant validation and repair, which is expensive, and can disrupt theatre procedures if reworking is delayed. Lastly, there is the issue of replacement capital with reusable units, as multiple sets are required to cope with high patient numbers. This is even more expensive when reprocessing is done away from the clinical location, which increases the cost over the funding estimates. These cumulative cost-saving and patient benefits are being noticed far and wide. During a recent international ENT symposium in London – the 27th Politzer Society – leading surgeons

from across Europe expressed interest in using DTR Medical’s single-use instruments in their own clinical practise. Some delegates were so

fenestrations, and is used across most surgical specialities. This modification to the manufacturing process has enabled the potential for more lines of products. A similar approach has been used to produce a range of sterile single-use Tibbs Arterial Cannula, which are used in many vascular procedures.

Single-use surgical instruments are not designed to replace all re-usable items, as they are most effective when used selectively to resolve a combination of the above factors. Managers of sterilisation services welcome the disposable items as they help them to combat the issues faced by utilising re-usable instruments. For instance, validating the sterility of long lengths of tubing is often problematic: DTR Medical eradicates this problem by supplying its range of pre-cut lengths of sterile silicone tubing, which are now being sold as far afield as New Zealand. To help hospital efficiency, single-use disposable instruments must be of a consistently high quality, and be readily available at all times. DTR Medical takes particular care to ensure that every instrument meets specification. To keep up with the demands of their clients, the company is continually improving and re-evaluating its systems. They recently changed their method of manufacturing a series of medical

Growing international demand means DTR Medical is looking forward to the future, and is creating new partnerships with Welsh Universities to deliver major new lines, including developments in gynaecological surgery.

Boots Centre for Innovation Maintain your Equilibrium: a calming solution for ‘stressed’ consumers Boots Equilibrium® is a food supplement which aims to help people manage the pressures of modern life. It contains a unique patented ingredient, Lactium®, which can provide calming support to help with the stresses and strains of everyday life. Lactium is a bio-protein isolated from milk which has been studied extensively for over ten years and has relaxing properties that reduce and regulate stress-related troubles naturally.

appropriate for new health and wellness products. The BCI investigated the claims and science behind all the opportunities and quickly established a technical interest in Lactium and its calming properties. It was a food-grade, patented product that represented a breakthrough in the field of nutrition.

Meeting a consumer need

The BCI had identified sleep, stress and energy as a sector with a key unmet healthcare need and was looking for solutions to address this market in response to customer demand. The organisation spoke to experts on the mechanics of sleep and the links to everyday stresses caused by modern lives, and also commissioned research to identify the products consumers are happy to use. This revealed a reluctance to use traditional sleeping pills and a preference for supplements and drinks.

Lactium is now available in the UK for the first time in Boots Equilibrium. It is offered in two different formats: a convenient once-a-day capsule in 7 or 14 day packs and a comforting hot chocolate drink.

Initial developments

Lactium was first developed by research scientists in the 1990s. It has shown proven efficacy on humans in six clinical studies using validated biological indicators and randomised, double-blind and placebo controlled procedures. The Boots Centre for Innovation (BCI) team was introduced to Lactium by a Cheshire company, Fayrefield FoodTec, which specialises in providing innovative food ingredients. Fayrefield FoodTec presented the BCI with a number of novel ingredient opportunities that it believed could be

Consumers want tailored solutions for their individual needs which will help them relax and unwind before bed and have an uninterrupted night’s sleep. This includes both quick fixes for temporary problems, such as to help them sleep when they have a cold, and solutions which deal with the root causes for long term sufferers. Lactium appeared to have considerable potential in this market, provided that suitable product formulations could be developed.

BCI’s role in the development

BCI began by establishing Lactium’s scientific credibility. They then worked with colleagues in the Boots healthcare team to assess the commercial opportunity for Boots. Having concluded that a potential market existed, BCI introduced Fayrefield FoodTec to the Alliance Boots product development team and the businesses worked together to

develop product formulations using Lactium. Twenty months later, the two product formats were launched to consumers. Gail Eastaugh, the BCI’s business development manager, comments: “This is a great example of how the BCI can take external innovation which is supported by thorough clinical evidence and, using Boots’ expertise in formulation, marketing and packaging, develop a winning product for our customers.” Steve Timms, sales and business development director from Fayrefield FoodTec, said: “Developing the Equilibrium product and bringing it to market has been much easier than I had expected, with the team at BCI supporting me every step of the way. They have a great deal of expertise, and without their support and the open approach from BCI the whole process would have been a lot tougher.” The products were launched in September 2009, and are selling well. Boots was so confident about Equilibrium with Lactium that the initial launch was supported with a ‘feel the difference or your money back’ guarantee on seven-day packs of Equilibrium, allowing customers to experience the benefits for themselves. Boots healthcare expert Gavin Stainton concludes: “Boots Equilibrium with Lactium offers anyone who feels under everyday pressure an aid to deal with it. The expertise behind this product makes it one of the most exciting launches this decade.” Boots Centre for Innovation Institute of Life Science University of Swansea Swansea SA2 8PP Wales UK Tel: +44 (0)1792 513 722 Email: info@bootsinnovation.co.uk Web: www.bootsinnovation.com
