Expanding Networks MediWales Manager Gwyn Tudor describes how the forum’s growth is shaping our future presence in the sector at home and abroad. Throughout the last year, the steady and sustained growth of core MediWales activities has enabled us to build on the strengths of our position in the wider medical technology sector. As a business, our turnover is set to double in the four years up to the end of 2008; our commercial income is set to increase sixfold in the same time frame. In servicing this expansion through the provision of first-rate events, a distinctive quarterly magazine, and a comprehensive, actively managed database, MediWales has been able bring into eversharper focus its work in the sector at large, identifying and concentrating on those areas that consistently yield substantial benefits for our membership. We are now the recognised hub for the sector in Wales. Our communications networks are key: MediWales is a vehicle for the constant interchange of ideas and information, whether in relation to suppliers, collaborators, networking opportunities, support services, or funding. The database works not only for the benefit of members but as a strategic tool in developing our close working relationships with important groups in the Welsh sector. Work with and for organisations such as the Welsh Assembly Government, International Business Wales, the Welsh Wound Network and Clinical Research Collaboration Cymru is becoming an established part of the MediWales role.

4

This development has in its turn enabled MediWales to consolidate its function as sector representative. We are working more consistently with a more defined group of strategically influential organisations, not only in Wales but across the UK. From ABHI to the Department for Business, Enterprise & Regulatory Reform, from UK Trade & Investment to the Health Technologies Knowledge Transfer Network, our connections reflect MediWales’s capabilities as a maturing organisation with a sustained growth in profile and activity, nationally and internationally. A concomitant part of that maturing status is our organisation’s ability to generate increasing amounts of its own revenue. MediWales now earns more than half its own income, being grant-aided to no more than 42% of its turnover. This position both sharpens our commercial awareness and strengthens our

ability to make strategically independent choices, so that we can shape our future development. We have for example identified overseas trade as a priority for our members, and are working with IBW to advise them on priority markets and missions. In that capacity MediWales is now supporting the active promotion of trade with China, the US, the Gulf States and the Far East at events like Medica in Dusseldorf and Arab Health in Dubai, and through customised events such as the International Market Focus on US and Gulf trading opportunities, delivered in both North and South Wales. These activities are delivered on 100% commercial basis, and driven not by generic public sector priorities but by the stated needs of groups and companies working in the medical technology sector. The same is true of our newest publication, the biannual Medilink UK Review. Produced on behalf of

Medilink UK, of which MediWales was a founder member, the magazine looks at the development of health technologies throughout the UK. Again, this sector-wide focus fits with our efforts to shape the landscape we work in. In the year to come, we’ll be working to build up these existing roles: our future development depends not on novelty, but on impact, and our priorities will reflect this. We’ll be looking to maintain the quality of our services at a greater scale and scope, to a steadily increasing membership. While we work with every kind of group in the sector, our membership profile shows a clear preponderance of health technology companies. These are the entities at the end of the supply chain and the ones who equip us with our mandate, and this profile will influence the character of our activities in the coming year.

As well as providing larger events and a higher profile for our magazine, we’ll be seeking highvalue representation of our members’ interests. Value of this kind does not only lie in national bodies such as BERR: it can equally be found in the work we do with groups such as the Wrexham Giebel Round, which not only has a substantial regional impact, but offers potential as a generic model for development. We’ll also be increasing our advisory capacity, working in more depth with our members to resolve queries about suppliers, collaborators, and funding sources. An important part of next year’s activities will be the amended programme to provide improved metrics for the sector in Wales. Begun last year, this initiative got off to a faltering start: like many others currently involved in comparable projects throughout the UK, we discovered just how difficult and complex a process it

can be. That experience has however equipped us to re-design and complete the exercise this year. There’s now a nationwide consensus that metrics of this kind are essential to the future of the health technology industries. Equally, it’s recognised that sourcing them is a major undertaking – but nevertheless one that can be realised if given the necessary priority. This has now been accorded at national level: MediWales will be working with BERR through 2008-9 as part of a spin-out group from the Health Industries Task Force, to collate UK-wide metrics about health technology industries in terms of both their present position and future potential.

Events Preview MediWales events for the coming year are already being discussed and developed with our directors in the light of our member feedback.

MediWales Innovation Awards Dinner 2008 Now a landmark event in the Welsh sector, the third annual Awards ceremony will be held this autumn on 4th November. The venue will again be Cardiff’s Hilton Hotel, where last year’s Awards were attended – and volubly enjoyed – by 110 guests. Application forms for the 2008 Awards will go out at the end of August, with judging being made in early October. As always, winners will then automatically be entered for the Medilink UK National Health Technology Awards – where in 2007, MediWales member Sleepworks Ltd won the award for Business Start-up.

MediWales Joint Events Increasingly, MediWales will be working to develop shared events with regular collaborating organisations such as IBW, the Wrexham Giebel Round, and the Welsh Wound Healing Network. In addition we will be involved in the organisation, promotion and presentation of BioWales 2009, a lynchpin conference and biopartnering event for the Welsh sector.

Mediwales Annual Lecture This year we’ll be inaugurating an annual lecture on a topic of major sector-wide significance. Given by a top academic or industry chief, the lecture will give its audience access to a more in-depth analysis of the wider ethical, social and economic implications of important issues.

MediWales Core Seminars Each of our forthcoming MediWales seminars addresses a topic of fundamental concern to the medical technology sector. Feedback from our own members and from the regional and national networks that we work with have shaped both the content and character of these seminars, which will incorporate the latest findings and developments around the issues our delegates will be exploring.

Future Trends In a time of rapid change and economic uncertainty, this event targets some of the most important changes under way in healthcare. Exploring the influence of technology, regulation, the economy, and the changing landscape of healthcare provision, the presentations will help delegates to identify business opportunities and threats in their own business sector, research or clinical practice. Serving the Sector One of the strengths of the Welsh sector is the scope and effectiveness of the key services that support medical technology companies and help Wales to pack a punch internationally. Professionals such as lawyers, design consultants, accountants and patent agents play a vital role in facilitating successfully realised health technologies. This event explains the importance of these contributions, how they work, and what health technology organisations need to understand about them. Invention and Innovation: working together with universities The need for greater industry-academia collaboration is a perennial call in the medtech sector, being the source of much key work in research and development. This seminar will focus on the reality of building collaborative relationships across these different cultures: what are the qualities that favour positive working partnerships in the beginning, and foster sustainable, productive collaborations in the long term?

SME Competitiveness and Metrics What makes companies succeed in our sector? Our assumptions may well differ from what the facts that we can collate actually tell us. Ground-breaking research currently being undertaken by BERR will give uniquely detailed, threedimensional data on companies that have become leaders in their field and have a story to tell. They should be heard by everyone working in or with a UK health technology SME.

The Haemair mission is to produce respiratory aids that range from devices that support respiration for patients with deficient lungs via an easily reversible fully external device to a prosthetic device that may replace human lungs. The basis of the device is a blood/air mass exchanger. This exchanger takes carbon dioxide from the blood and transfers oxygen into the blood. It is compact, portable and suitable for conscious, active patients. The devices are aimed at both acute and chronic lung conditions. In Europe and North America alone, our device offers hope to over a million people per year who currently die of lung disease or damage. Unlike most conventional treatments for lung deficiency, the devices do NOT use the lungs; thus they allow deficient lungs to rest and recover, rather than forcing damaged lungs to work harder through mechanically supported breathing. Ultimately our patients should be allowed home.

Lack of movement over time is a major risk factor for pressure sores in patients. The ‘Synidor’ system detects lack of movement and warns nursing staff if this occurs over too long a period. The system has two parts – • A mattress cover: The unique way the Syniohm sensor works allows considerable flexibility in its use. In the case of our ‘intelligent’ mattress cover, monitoring measurements can be made without having sensors either on or under the patient. The Synidor mattress cover, a disposable item, will not be affected by the normal day-to-day cleaning regime. The patient will generally be altogether unaware of the monitoring process; • An alarm unit: This is a battery driven remote unit with an operating voltage of 3.2volts. When insufficient movement is detected, visible and audible alarms are triggered. The audible alarm can be switched off for night time use.
