PODKOWA, SCHULTE LEAD DEPAUL PAST ST. JOHN’S 4

A big bounce-back victory was just what DePaul had in mind Sunday at McGrathPhillips Arena.

compete after our loss to a very good Seton Hall team on Friday night,” said DePaul coach Doug Bruno. “We knew St. John’s had a run in them and that happened in the And that’s precisely what the Blue Demons second half. Our team really responded and accomplished with an 82-55 BIG EAST began to execute offensively by getting the Conference victory over St. John’s. ball to the right people.” DePaul improved to 20-7---the 23rd time it has won 20 or more games in a season--and 12-3 in the BIG EAST. St. John’s dropped to 17-8, 8-6.

The Blue Demons took a 17-point lead early in the second half when St. John’s went on a 6-2 spurt to make it 45-32. A Jenkins three upped the margin to 48-32.

Megan Podkowa led the way with 16 points and 10 rebounds while Chanise Jenkins had 15 points and four assists. Brooke Schulte finished with 14 points and a career-high 12 rebounds for her first career double-double and Mart’e Grays had 13 points. Danaejah Grant topped St. John’s with 22 points and 11 rebounds.

A four-point burst by St. John’s narrowed the gap to 48-36 midway through the second half. It remained a 12-point game until Schulte buried a three.

on three-pointers and Podkowa scored in the lane for a 61-42 lead. Podkowa and Jenkins followed up with baskets in a 12-0 run. That evolved into a 21-3 Blue Demon surge for a 74-45 lead with less than three minutes to go. A key factor in Sunday’s win was DePaul outrebounding St. John’s 38-29. “We knew this was going to be a huge rebounding game,” Podkowa said. “Everyone on the team went strong to the glass in order to win.” Schulte had nine of her 12 rebounds in the first 20 minutes. “We can’t make our players any bigger, and rebounding is all about your head, heart and guts,” Bruno said. “I thought Brooke did a great job rebounding---especially in the first half.” Schulte had one of her better games of the season. “I focused on the little things and tried to bring aggression to my rebounding,” Schulte said. “I was reading the screens well on offense and our guards did a good job getting me the ball when I was open.” A compelling watch going into this game was the head-to-head showdown between the top two scorers in the BIG EAST, Handford (20.3 points per game) and Hrynko (20.1). Hrynko finished with seven points and seven assists while Handford was held to nine points.

ROGOWSKI NAMED A FINALIST FOR SENIOR CLASS AWARD

Despite a torn ACL and missing most of her senior season, DePaul guard Megan Rogowski has been named one of 10 finalists for the 2014-15 Senior CLASS Award ®. An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Senior CLASS Award ® focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities. A three-point sharp shooter, Rogowski has tallied 243 career triples which is the third most all-time at DePaul. Her 621 3-point field goal attempts rank fourth, while her .391 (243-for-621) percentage from behind the arc is also fourth all time. This season, Rogowski’s .424 3-point field goal percentage ranked as high as 41st in Division I while her 2.8 3-pointers per game ranked as high as 30th. DePaul went into the second media timeout of the game on a 12-1 run as Jenkins had five points in that span. That led to an early 21-9 lead. Baskets by Grays and Schulte along with a pair of Jenkins foul shots extended that run to 18-1. The Blue Demons led 31-11 when the Red Storm scored eight unanswered points to draw within 31-19. Grays ended the St. John’s run and McGee followed with a pair of free throws. After Grant hit a foul shot, Grays ended the first half with a three-pointer off a nice feed from Hrynko. DePaul is back in action Friday with a 7 p.m. BIG EAST game at Creighton.

GREENE INDUCTED WILLIAMS’ JERSEY RETIRED TO HALL OF FAME FLINT -- The more than 100 plaques honoring Flint athletes in Flint Public Library will grow in just about a month, as the Greater Flint Afro-American Sports Hall of Fame announced their Class of 2015 on Tuesday.

LIMA -- Tammy Williams, who led Lima Senior to its only appearance in the girls state basketball tournament in 1989, will have her jersey retired at halftime of the Spartans boys basketball game on Tuesday night against Toledo Whitmer.

Headlined by former NBA sharpshooter and champion Glen Rice, the class features seven athletes and the 1991 Michigan Parks and Recreation Association softball championship team.

The 5-foot, 7-inch guard is the No. 2 career scorer in Lima Senior girls basketball with 1,453 points. She held the top spot until Indiya Benjamin passed her last season.

Joining Rice is elementary school friend Terence Greene, who went to Flint Central High School in 1985, starring in basketball and football. He later went to DePaul University to play basketball, and is now in the DePaul Athletic Hall of Fame. “Being able to come in and go in with these guys and follow up the guys that are already in is a special feeling,” Greene says. The Spartans were a state semifinalist that year and were No. 6 in the Associated Press state rankings. She played in college at DePaul University, where she was named Great Midwest Conference Player of the Year in 1993. The win marked DePaul’s seventh in a row. Chicago State, meanwhile, fell to 1-6. “I was really proud of the girls’ effort today,” said head coach Mark Ardizzone. “The Xavier kids compete so well and you have to earn every point against them. We are fighting through some injuries but we have to keep battling.”
