Moving Sections By Skye Rourke, Grade 4

This is my third year at TASIS. Every year, I’ve been in the American section. But this year, it changed. My parents moved me to the Italian section so I would learn Italian better. I did it because it would help two people: Caterina and me. Caterina wouldn’t be the only girl in class and I would get better at Italian. On the first day, we drew a picture of what we had done on Summer Vacation. We did work and it was hard for me. But each day now, my Italian is improving. I am very happy I made the decision to go there. Every day I have lots of fun, and learn a lot. Now I love being there, even though I miss my friends. Here are some notes about moving sections: • • • •

Always bring a dictionary from Italian to English. If you do not know something, always ask for help. Sit next to someone who speaks Italian and English. Try to speak as much as you can, even if you are worried you’ll make mistakes.

I See By Emilie Hansen

In a place cold and rainy, I look out the window, I see my garden full of leaves, I hear the sounds of yelling. I see a tree full of apples, I see a bush full of berries, I see my neighbor waving, I wave back.

The one and only restaurant, Caddy’s has the beach style, with a stage and live singers too, The original beach food and drinks are great! The waiter and waitress would recommend The hot wings with blue cheese and steak fries, But if you don’t like spicy things, Try the fried shrimp and curly fries!

I see my neighbor’s dog. I see it running around, I see a person on the street, I see, I see, I see.

Summer House At My Grandma’s By Jennifer-Lin Kramer

At my grandma’s house Where the sweet apples were I went running down the hill And saw my mom taking the bill I didn’t know what to do So I played with glue It all got in my hair I had no spare time Or my mom would see my hair I went sleeping And saw my dad sweeping in my dream I woke up And sighed with pride I went back to sleep My Home By Estella Acampora

My home is a cozy place, but some people don’t know, Why I think it is so. You all think it isn’t, But you’ll never know, Because it is a secret, And my homely home we will never tell how it’s made.

At my cousin’s farm, At mid-day I leave the barn, I feed the chickens and roosters, But don’t forget the goosters. At my cousin’s farm, In the evening I go back to the barn, I go clean the horses, So they’ll get ready for the courses. My Village By Avishag Shaul

Everyone celebrates together day and night. They celebrate all The holidays together Sing songs and make parties. So if you ever go to Israel you should go To my village yourself. And then you see all The happiness that Is going on in my Village. But in the end I realize that I like it also here.

Lake And Forest By Kolby Kish

Lake goes under water under water goes to fish, fish swims to turtle and in the middle am I. Turtle swims to land, land goes to forest, forest goes to tree, tree goes to bird and bird flies to me.

TASIS Headmaster: Michael Ulku-Steiner By Filippo Cipolini, Grade 5

A father, a husband , a learner. This is how Mr. Ulku-Steiner describes himself. He grew up in Albuquerque, New Mexico and then went to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (Michael Jordan studied at the same university) and earned degrees in English Literature, Spanish, and Art History. He then studied Liberal Arts at Duke University and earned an M.A. at Columbia University Teachers College in Educational Administration. He decided to dedicate his life to education to give back all the good experiences he had with his wonderful teachers and to keep on learning. Mr. Ulku-Steiner would not change anything in his life. He likes so much about his job: the interaction with the students, the continuous challenges he faces every day, working in teams. Picking up litter from the campus is the thing he likes the least. He enjoys working with the teachers, recruiting new teachers with certain strengths, and improving the quality of teaching. He does not like the importance that it is given at the School to clothes, jewelry, shoes, etc. In ten years from now he sees himself still learning and enjoying his family. He is very happy to be in a place where people are willing to work and learn.

I interviewed Ms. Ilse’s ten Pre-K students from eight different countries. I asked them the following questions by email: 1. What is your favorite farm animal and why? 2. If you would have a farm, what animals would you keep? 3. What would be your favorite job on the farm? Why? All the students have a favorite animal, but not always the same. Learning English Through Writing

Yosemite National Park Written and photographed by Gaia de Sanctis, Grade 3

Last summer I went with my family to Yosemite National Park, which is in East Central California. We spent a few days there, and one day we went on a long walk with a Park Ranger to see the Giant Sequoias. Giant Sequoias are enormous trees that are very old; some have lived for more than one thousand years. To discover the age of a tree you need to look at the central point of the trunk slice, where there are concentric rings. Each of these represents one year’s growth. Can you imagine how many rings a Giant Sequoia has? A very famous sequoia is called Grizzly. It is gigantic! Another day we went for a bike ride to Yosemite Valley. While we were biking we saw a family of two deer and two fawns. They were so cute! The following day, always on Yosemite Valley, we even saw a grown up brown bear! I couldn’t believe my eyes. Two Park rangers were following the bear from afar with an anesthetic gun. We also went to see Mirror Lake. It is so special because the lake really works as a mirror. In fact there is a mountain behind and you can see the mountain reflection on the lake. I also liked Half Dome a lot, which looks like a dome (or a sand cake!) sliced in half. Because I had been good at looking and learning what the Park Rangers told me I got a Junior park Ranger Badge! I really enjoyed this special trip with my family!

Benjamin’s Day By Cristian Riis, Grade 4

The lesson of the “the Miraculous Pitcher” teaches us to be considerate of one another. An example of being considerate is to help someone when they get hurt, as in the following story: Once upon a time, there was a boy called Benjamin. He was very strong. One day, there was a girl down at the river. She was stuck and a lot of people were around the river staring at her. Everybody was talking about it in the village. Benjamin heard it and ran down to the river. When he got there, the crowd was huge. Everyone was screaming and yelling. He saw the girl. She was really scared. Benjamin ran across the rocks and was now over where the girl was. The girl was about eleven years old. Benjamin said, “I will save you.” The girl said, “Thank you.” But how would he? By carrying her across the stones? So, he lifted her carefully across the stones. Everybody was yelling and shouting because they thought that they were going to fall. But it wasn’t true that they were going to fall because Benjamin was a very strong boy of course. So, everybody had their eyes wide open. They couldn’t believe that he had done it. The girl said, “Thank you. You’re my prince!” Everybody laughed and smiled at each other. Benjamin was the rescuer of the day. After that, everybody had a big party. That was Benjamin’s day. Pooh Goes Skiing By Michaela Holmes, Grade 1

Pooh and Piglet went skiing in Airolo. It was their first time. When Pooh was going down the slope he fell over twice. The second time Pooh fell over he hit a tree. He smelt honey and he loved honey! He climbed the tree. The tree was full of honey so he started to eat it. He ate until he saw some bees. He quickly climbed down and skied off very fast. He remembered that he was racing Piglet. He wanted to win the race. He soon overtook Piglet and won the race. Piglet caught up with Pooh and they both went for some hot chocolate except for Pooh. He was full of honey.

Tom and the Mystery of the Cloudmen, Part 1 By Giordana Fiorentino, Grade 5

Once upon a time, there was a mysterious village with unusual people and cold, stone houses. The mysterious thing about it was that each night, the sea was invaded by a dark fog so black that nobody could see through it. Each night, some of the people disappeared and more stars appeared. Only a poor, scruffy boy knew the terrible secret: every late evening, strange pirates made out of black cloud arrived on a ship called The Mist to the seashore and with their power kidnapped some of the villagers and brought them to their ship. The cloudmen worked for the Lord of Clouds: if the perished people had been good, they would bring them to heaven and would be transformed into stars. On the other hand, if they had been bad they would go to the underworld. The boy who had discovered all that was named Tom. He had no parents and lived alone in the streets. He Source: TopTenz.net had nothing to do, so that night he decided to go to the seashore and explore more. He wished terribly to see the cloudmen (his grandpa had told him the legend before dying), but he wasn’t even sure they existed! Tom finally arrived and there was the black mist, as dark as ever. He reached out his hand towards it and, surprisingly, it passed right through the fog! Suddenly, he felt Source: Synestesia.com someone pulling hard at him: a cloud-pirate! The last thing Tom could sense was a loud BANG as he was thrown onboard of The Mist, pain and fright rising inside him with the salty sea smell. Then everything went black, absolutely black. The Dreamer, Part 1 By Gregoria Fiorentino, Grade 5

I was a ten-year old boy named Sid who dreamed of going to magical and mysterious lands far away. And this very day I finally got the answer. I found the entrance to a magical land, and without even thinking I went inside the gateway and was teleported there, to Monsterland. There I found all the monsters of the land dancing and having fun at a party. I thought I was dreaming! Suddenly everybody stopped and a purple mist hung over everybody’s head. I realized that the King had arrived: everyone bowed, but nobody dared speaking. From the books that I had read, the King came only for serious reasons. A fat monster started whispering to the King, eyeing me wearingly. Then the king announced something in monster language. All of the monsters stared at me. They looked dreary. They had a cold stare, wicked smile, sharp teeth, and evil eyes. Suddenly I understood why they were staring. I was an intruder, and they had called “His Majesty” so that he could put me into prison and then cook me (you have to know that monsters are great cannibals). I started to run, but it was too late: they had grabbed me. TO BE CONTINUED... Source: OpenClipArt.org

Dear Friends,

When you eat something, please don’t throw trash on the ground! Keep your beautiful playground clean so that other children can play in the green grass and that people’s feet don’t stumble on your garbage. THANKS FOR YOUR HELP!
