Rememering We visited the American cemetery of WW1 in France. There was a single grave with an artificial rose in front of the cross. I wondered who had put it there.

This is my son “This is my son.” She pointed at the little boy. I didn’t know whether it was true, or if she was just playing with me. The 17-year-old girl I met near the lake was just following her daily routine. While I struggled to carry a little bucket of water balanced on top of my head, she did the same and still held her baby and a fish she had just bought for her family. That’s what they were having for dinner, a single fish, for a family of 16 people.

Popcorn Emma and I went to a school called Winjo in Muhuru Bay to teach the kids there. While waiting for the class to start, we saw little kids walking and playing around the ‘campus’. We decided to leave the room where we were waiting and went out to play with them. As soon as they saw us, they were paralyzed. We tried to say hello and get to know them, but all they did was stare at us, speechless. Then I pulled a plastic bag filled with popcorn out of my pocket. Their eyes popped towards toe food, as if they had never seen popcorn before. The kids had transformed from statues to wild children craving food. We couldn’t control them, and more kept coming in our direction, raising their hands in a desperate attempt to get a little taste of the popcorn.

Hercules

We were visiting a museum and in front of us was the captivating statue of Hercules. While I was looking through the lens of my camera, I noticed Zach in the background, looking very bored. Within three seconds his eyes slowly started to close, then he fell asleep.

Caterpillar Trail While walking through ancient ruins in Greee, we heard screaming, coming from the girls who discovered caterpillars everywhere. We tried to explain that the caterpillars couldn’t hurt you if you left them alone, but the girls carried on with their shrieks. When I took a closer look I realized the caterpillars were moving in a line, as if they were playing followthe-leader.

Olympic Dreams Ready, set, go. Run as fast as you can, but remember if the first person who crosses the finish line falls, you will fall as well!

The Ropes Course As we looked at this ropes course for the first time, it looked pretty easy. We soon realized we should not judge a book by its cover. In my opinion, it was the hardest activity my group and I did during the Outward Bound trip. Alex Wolf and I were very excited to go up on the wooden twisty beams, but once we started there was a part of me that questioned why I had been excited to get up here. During everyone’s turn the whole group laughed, but encouraged each other. I noticed that everyone stayed interested in the activity whether or not it was their turn. It was fun to watch everyone give the obstacle a try. It was not easy, but I am glad I did it. Now that the challenge is done, it has become a memory I will keep from the trip.

French Soldiers Our group was entering the battlefield of Verdun, one of the most important ones of World War I, when we came upon these French army soldiers leaving the battlefield after training. I was uncertain if I could take pictures of them. Just to make sure, I asked our tour guide if I could take a picture of them, and this happened!

Amazing Architecture This is a picture of a Roman arena is a small town in Southern France. Straight lines represent the advancement of Roman technologies. The sunshine underlines the straightness of lines and makes this picture a bit brighter and more joyful.

Always a Cat Cats and dogs were everywhere we went. If we were in a museum, they were outside and if we were at a historical site, they were walking on the ruins. They were all strays, but mostly were healthy as tourists fed them as they came by and shopkeepers left food out for them.

Emptiness These train tracks show the former depot at Auschwitz, one of the many concentration camps where the Nazis imprisoned families and killed people during World War II.

What a contrast After a week of trekking through the Belgian wilderness, a day in Belgian’s capital, Brussels, was a nice contrast. After the morning’s tour of a local chocolate factory, the entire group of TASIS 10th Graders made their way through the streets of Brussels, and using only our mediocre French skills and blind intuition to find the Hard Rock Café. Eventually, we came across this structure. The only thing I could do to express my amazement was to raise my camera and capture this photograph.

Please On the busy streets of Edinburgh, there are many different people. However, in all the crowd, I noticed this particular homeless man. His face was not emotionless, but his eyes said everything.

Lots of Tours This was our last day in Olympia. We were so tired, and we still had had a five-hour bus ride ahead. The tour guide seemed to just talk and talk and talk. I think we were too full of information. She went into great detail on absolutely EVERYTHING. To be honest, it was difficult.

A Scottish Tradition In Edinburgh, there are many different amazing people to meet. This Scottish bagpiper could be heard from many streets away. His music drew me to him, and so I went looking for him. Despite his beautiful play, very few people stopped to listen to him. I stopped and listened for a while to him playing and shot a photo. It was also interesting to note that the cold whether of Scotland did not prevent him from wearing the traditional Scottish kilt.

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines, sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” – Mark Twain
