PARKING PROBLEMS THE issue of parking shortages in Tarporley continues to rear its head. Traders are worried that the lack of parking is seriously hindering footfall, so the parish council is attempting to do its bit by making more spaces available. Tarporley remembers Tarporley has been commemorating the 61 fallen soldiers of World War 1 who never returned home to the village. Local amateur actors in uniforms played the parts of some of them, moving quietly about the village, including reading out actual letters from the war front. The Living Memories performances were performed by the Tarporley Dramatic Society around the village over one weekend. Our pictures show some of the playlets at St Helen’s Church and its Lych Gate with actors playing soldiers and nurses.

More car parking spaces in the offing In March the Parish Council (TPC) held informal talks with Liberty Properties (LP) concerning their proposal to construct a care home and small public car park on a field between the Manor House and the offices of Hall Livesey Brown with access on to the High Street opposite Bird Lane. This is the site previously considered by Aldi. Following a second meeting in May, LP agreed to increase the capacity of the public car park to 88 car spaces and six motorcycle spaces. These parking spaces are in addition to those for staff and visitors. The proposal will also involve the creation of approximately 65 new jobs. Two public meetings took place to consider the proposals because this is a significant development for Tarporley and is in a designated green space and conservation area. Policies in the neighbourhood plan prohibit development in such a location except in very special circumstances, one of which is the construction of new car parking facilities but even this is subject to strict constraints. Having considered the pros and cons of the development, including the significant need for additional car parking capacity in the village, the loss of green space that will result and the comments of villagers at the public meetings, TPC decided, on balance, at the meeting on 9 July, not to object to the development proceeding to the next stage. The decision is subject to various conditions being met, which will be detailed in the minutes of the meeting posted on the TPC website and on the TPC noticeboard. Other car parking opportunities currently under investigation include the following: • Extending the surgery car park using S106 money (provided by house builders to improve village amenities following a successful planning application). This should ease the pressure for car parking spaces elsewhere in the village. • Asking Chester West and Cheshire Council (CWaC) to quote for replacing part of the wide pavement

between The Avenue and the Community Centre (TCC) with approximately 6 chevron car parking spaces. • Asking landowners in the village if TPC can lease land for a new car park. • Moving the playground behind ommunity centre to the field below and extending the car park. l Marking out for parking restrictions on various roads in Tarporley commenced on the evening of 9th July. The restrictions include time limited waiting bays along parts of the High Street with sections of no waiting at any time along the High Street, Eaton Road and Bowmere Road. There is also a short section of no waiting Monday to Saturday on Eaton Road close to the high school entrance. l Unfortunately, the car park on the old RBL site will not be open until late summer or early autumn. The delay results from the developer being unaware that United Utilities will not allow “run off” rainwater to flow directly into drains on the High Street and instead require a surge tank to be located under the car park. A Clerk of Works has been appointed by the Parish Council to ensure the car park is constructed to the required standard. This is necessary because TPC will be responsible for future maintenance of the car park after it is handed over. l Several meetings have been held between TPC and CWaC to investigate opportunities for new car parks in Tarporley and how they can be funded. In future this working group will be expanded to include representatives from the business community.

Second Monday of the month (except August) in either the Committee Room or the Craven Room (the downstairs room accessed from the rear car park) of the Community Centre. Each meeting starts at 7pm with an Open Forum, during which members of the public can address the whole Council on matters of concern to them. At 6.30pm, prior to this meeting, the Parish Council holds a surgery where members of the public can talk one to one with individual councillors on an informal basis. Daffodil Field Development of the Daffodil Field has started. Four car parking spaces have been permanently lost on the High Street to accommodate the access and a further 2 spaces on the opposite side of the High Street have been lost temporarily. The four spaces lost permanently will be more than compensated for by the addition of extra spaces in the public car park behind the Rising Sun.
Christmas It’s all change for the Christmas event this year. It will take place on Saturday the 1st of December and will move away from Chestnut Pavillion to an area outside St Helens Church and will extend across to the other side of the High Street. To accommodate the change, the High Street will be closed for an hour or so between the 2 junctions with Park Road, which will act as a by-pass. The format will be similar to previous years but there will be changes to improve the experience for parents and children alike.
Vehicular Damage There have recently been some incidents involving vehicles damaging the new benches on the High Street and the grassed area around Burton Square. If anyone sees similar or other damage being caused, please give details to one of the clerks or a councillor. New Councillors Required Following recent resignations there are two vacancies for Parish Councillors. Anyone interested should contact one of the clerks. Tattenhall Guides raise nearly £2,000 Tattenhall Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and Senior Section all came together to join the local Race for Life. A staggering amount was raised with the total being £1955, with every penny going to Cancer Research UK. A total 80 Girls from the age of five up to 18 all laced up their trainers and set out to do the course at Tattenhall Recreation Club, with Rainbows asked to complete 1 mile while the older girls all aimed to achieve 5k (just over 3 miles!). To make it even more exciting/challenging, many set their own personal challenge to complete the course such as kicking a football as they did it or dancing through the laps! Some of the youngest Rainbows were even determined not to be outdone by the older girls and did over double what 1st Tattenhall Rainbows (aged 5 – 7): they were expected to do Rhiannon Marshall and completed the 5k. New restaurant opens its doors in Tarporley A new restaurant opens on 26th July at the former HSBC bank building in Tarporley. After a sixmonth conversion, 32 is ready to open its doors with a restaurant, bar and five-bedroom hotel. It is the latest project from the people behind the popular Hollies Farm Shop and restaurant. The new business venture combines the family’s experience of running eateries and the success of The Hollies’ Highland hotel; Muckrach Country House Hotel. With the award-winning Hollies Farm Shop at their fingertips, the menus at 32 will be a fantastic way to showcase the finest fresh produce from their farm shop and butchery. Brothers Phil and Ed Cowap are putting the interior design ideas together, influenced by their favourite restaurants, bars and boutique hotels around the world and of course, Tarporley itself. After the dry spell.....
A
fter the dry period in early summer that caused some plant to die, many late summer perennials will be flowering less.
Plants that enjoy the dry weather in late summer include Echinops ritro or Globe Thistle. They will grow to 1.5m tall and have soft thistle shaped leaves with tall stems bearing golf ball sized blue flowers. The need support but do well at the back of borders in full sun and well drained soils. Another blue plant is the Eryngiums or Sea Holly. These are shorter plants, to 75cm tall with teazle like blue spiky flowers. They also love full sun and well drained soils. Veronicas are perennials with small and tall varieties in pink, white and blue which are good for sunny positions but need more moisture. Another good plant for sun is Verbena bonariensis which has tall stiff stems topped with heads of small purple flowers. Again, it takes up little space in the ground and lasts for weeks. Not hardy in severe winters but it will self seed. Those of you that have permanently damp soil, late summer is great for flowers. In August the purple loosestrife, Lythrum salicaria has tall spikes of magenta pink flowers. A quirky plant for those with damp soil and space for it to wander,try Lysimachia clethroides (up to 60cm) with its white foxtail flowers. They remind me of meerkats on the lookout! If you have an established hellebore plant in the garden, look under the large leaves and you may find small seedlings already growing. Pot them up or move them out into more space so they can grow on. Keep beans, courgettes, pumpkins and squashes well watered in summer. Once the squashes and pumpkins have grown to size the foliage should die off gradually. Keep them outside to ripen the skin and keep any foliage off the ripening pumpkins. If you would like to visit gardens look out for gardens open under the National Gardens Scheme where all proceeds go to charities including Marie Cure Cancer Care and Macmillan Cancer Support. Laskey Farm, Thelwell is open on 11th and 12th August with many interesting features including a series of pools and water features with superb poolside planting, herbaceous borders and a maze of grasses and prairie style planting. Abbeywood near Delamere is open on 12th August. This garden has a stunning exotic garden full of colour, formal gardens leading out into huge borders filled with sweeping planting of grasses and perennials.

Celebrating 50 years of Caring For the past 50 years the Bunbury Agency has been providing Domiciliary Care Services for the Elderly, Children and Households nationwide and especially in Cheshire. As many may know, Leila Potter established the agency when she could not find that ‘Special Person’ to look after her own three children. Party Time... On 5th July, we celebrated our Anniversary by providing a fabulous luncheon in the Orangery at Willington Hall. Nearly 70 of the clients and carers attended and Alexis Redmond, High Sheriff of Cheshire was our Guest of Honour. It was such a happy and special day and a great success. It felt like we were one big family. Some of our clients had not been to an occasion like this for many years. A super day in the sun in There was some fantastic weather for the Bunbury Village Day in late June, which helped draw some big crowds to the Jubilee Playing Fields. The superhero theme was embraced by many of the visitors, notably the Scouts and Guides. hen the Queen turned 90 on 21 April, she served as a very public reminder of how much longer, as a society, we are living. In her own family, four generations are now all alive at the same time, from the Queen herself down to her latest great grandchild, Princess Charlotte. An increasing number of families now find themselves in the same position, which has implications for financial planning. As a nonagenarian, Her Majesty is far from alone. The number of people over 90 years old rose by a third between 2002 and 2012, according to a report published by the Office for National Statistics in 20151. It also says that the number of over-85s in the UK is likely to more than double by 2039, to 3.4 million; longevity and the multi-generational family are here to stay2. Another key phenomenon that is changing is how we manage our wealth against the backdrop of a growing generational wealth gap. The economy was kind to those born in the years immediately after the Second World
War, and in the 1950s, but less so to those born in the 1980s and 1990s – the so-called ‘millennial generation’ – who are finding it harder to get jobs and to get onto the property ladder. It means many parents are having to support their children financially well into their adult lives. While our children are struggling with their finances, our parents are living longer. This has led to an increase in the need for long-term care, which is likely to be financed from accumulated savings, selling the family home or with support from younger generations. This changing dynamic has raised the prospect of a renewed social contrast between the generations – the idea that we collectively support each other through the stages of our lives, and do so fairly. Thus, the prospect of transferring assets from one generation to the other, often within our own lifetimes, is becoming much more common. Plant Hunters Fairs have four great gardening events in the area to visit during August and September each with a brilliant line-up of top nurseries. It’s just the right time to pick up some late flowering plants to give your garden a boost and the nurseries will have just the right plant to set your summer garden ablaze with colour and add a sparkle to a shady spot. It is also the perfect time to plant, ready for next year’s bloom. On Sunday 26th and Monday 27th August there is one of the best loved garden events in the area at the Dorothy Clive Gardens with a winning line up of the best nurseries around, a most charming and beautiful garden and a truly relaxing and inviting atmosphere. The garden offers a great special event price on these days of just £4.00 for garden & plant fair entry (normally standard garden entry is £8.50). The gardens are on the A51 four miles south of Bridgemere. Plant Hunters’ Fairs will then be at Ness Botanic Gardens on Sunday 2nd September. The fair is held in the herb garden and costs just £1.00 to enter. This is redeemable if you then decide to visit the garden. On Sunday 16th September the venue to visit is Henbury Hall Gardens, near Macclesfield. The event offers the chance to explore these wonderful rarely open gardens for only £2.50. What’s on in your village AUGUST The Mid Cheshire Amateur Radio Society The Society meets at 7.30pm every Wednesday evening just north of Tarporley, Cheshire at Cotebrook Village Hall Stable Lane, Cotebrook, Tarporley CW6 0JJ. Come along and see what it’s all about and learn something new. More on the website http://midcars.org/ Kelsall WI The Workings of Parliament is the talk at our July meeting while a visit to the Tiffany Glass Collection, Haworth Museum and People’s Museum, Manchester is arranged for August after we have had our Members Meeting. A special committee take over, organise the meeting and surprise the members. Visitors are always welcome. We meet in the Methodist Church school room on the first Wednesday of the month at 7.30pm. Get to know new people and have a cup of tea and home-made cake. Peckforton and Beeston WI Some of our members took part in the WI Healthy Living week in June by walking around parts of Bunbury, followed by refreshments at Tilly’s Coffee Shop. Our Summer Outing took the form of a tour of The Gladstone Library and St Deniol’s Church at Hawarden, which proved to be extremely interesting. Gladstone, who was Prime Minister four times, donated all his books to the Library and it, together with another adjacent library, is now a source of research for students from all over the world. The church contained some beautiful examples of stained glass windows. The visit included an excellent lunch and the venue was well worth a visit. Our next hall meeting is on 1st August when we will hear about the History of Hairdressing and we would welcome any visitors at 7.30 in Peckforton Village Hall. Margaret Ellis, 01829 261898
