The centenary of the end of World War One will be commemorated around the country in November. Here in Chester, there is a memorial at St Mary’s Church, Handbridge, with names of those who died during the conflict. Now, the church is seeking to trace relatives of the soldiers as part of the commemoration. In this edition we have pictures from the dragon boat race, golf croquet at Westminster Park, rowing success, local clubs and lots more, as well as gardening and health & beauty.

Search for relatives of Handbridge WWI heroes Is someone in your family named on the World War One war memorial at St Mary’s Church, in Handbridge? The war memorial in church has 94 names on it (93 men and 1 woman). Each of the men is only recorded by surname and initials. Given that this year is the centenary of the end of the war, the church wants to honour them. Linda Shuttleworth said: “Looking towards the centenary of the end of fighting this November, I would like to be able to honour them by identifying each of them more personally, and if possible to tell the stories of at least some of them. Death of Handbridge historian Len Morgan Sad news has reached us of the death of the much-loved historian and Chester guide Len Morgan. Len was a hugely popular figure in the city, writing countless history books, giving talks and showing visitors around. Len was a true Cestrian, having been born within the Walls at White Friars back in 1933. After leaving school at 14 he started work as a stonemason, then working for Post Office telephones and in 1955 he married his wife Joan at St Mark’s Church, Saltney. The couple, who lived in Handbridge, had three children, eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren. In 2015 Len was given the honour of an honorary freeman of the borough for his work in promoting Chester. Len spent the last few months of his life at a care home in Ellesmere Port and sadly died at the Countess of Chester Hospital, following a short illness last month. Len’s son Dave told the Chester Chronicle: “His love for the city shone through and had a positive effect on all who came in contact with him. “Even in his eighties Dad remained forever active and enthusiastic in promoting Chester as a beautiful and historic city; he was the perfect ambassador for the city.”

lants are in bloom earlier this year due to the dry weather which brings on flowering before the “normal” season.
Colour this autumn comes from Rudbekia fulgida Goldsturm, a jolly yellow daisy like flower with a black centre which flowers for weeks if kept watered. They do best in a heavier soil that retains moisture and need to be split and replanted every few years to maintain their flowering. Another flowering perennial that is doing really well this year is the Penstemons. These produce foxglove shaped flowers for a long period from summer to autumn, especially if you dead head them. They have bright green leaves and the flowers come in red, white, all shades of pink and mauve/blue. This year they have performed well in the heat when other plants have wilted. The smaller leaved variety Garnet with dark red flowers is very good for hot weather. If you are looking for colour from shrubs, then the Hydrangeas of all varieties are performing well if kept watered! They like a damper soil but if the leaves wilt, throw a couple of buckets of water on the roots and they should perk up. Although I love the Lacecap varieties, the mophead types are giving bold colour this year as you can see from the photo. Another late flowering shrub is Abelia Grandiflora. This needs a bit of shelter so a windswept site is not ideal. It has small neat glossy green foliage and in autumn has masses of small white scented flowers. Can get to 2m tall if left unpruned but cut it back after flowering or in spring and it will form a neat shrub about 1m tall. Work to do in the garden. Let your pumpkins and squashes harden off in the sun before bringing them in to a cool garage to store. Protect your brassicas with robust netting to avoid pigeons eating them over winter. If the soil is damp enough, perennials can be dug up and split and replanted. Crocosmias need this as after time they become congested and cease to flower well. Replant a few in soil enriched with well rotted manure for a good show next year. If you would like to visit gardens look out for gardens open under the National Gardens Scheme where all proceeds go to charities including Marie Cure Cancer Care and Macmillan Cancer Support. Mount Pleasant Gardens, Kelsall open on 1st and 2nd September, has 10 acres of gardens to discover including a sculpture trail.

Chester Family History Group The meeting on Thursday 27th September features a talk entitled ‘The Progress of Women in Britain 1800 – 1945’, by Michael Murphy. His talk covers the progress of women from their lowly status with no property rights, through their roles in the WWI to gaining the right to vote and more opportunities such as in the job market. Inspirational Morgan earns school sporting award Congratulations to Year 12 student, Morgan Linfield, who received the much-coveted Michael Ord Award this year at Queen’s Park High School for his outstanding contribution to initiating and managing the sporting aspect of the house competition during this academic year. Morgan’s endeavours have provided students of all ages and ability with the chance to represent their house and earn points towards the prestigious trophy at the end of the year Morgan was presented with the memorial trophy by Stuart Ord who set it up in honour and memory of his son Michael. Michael, a former Queen’s Park High School student and keen sportsman, died of meningitis in 1993, aged 14. Head of Grosvenor House, Mr Taylor, said: “We are very proud to present Morgan with this award. He is a student who has continually developed his leadership skills and now he is using his skills to inspire younger students to follow in his footsteps.” The Michael Ord Award is a particularly important and meaningful memorial trophy presented to one nominated student each year for their outstanding contribution to Sport. Morgan’s name will be engraved onto the honours plaque which lists previous years’ winners dating back every year to 1994.

Honours even in dragon In what has become an annual sporting event, the time was nigh and temperatures were at an alltime high for the Queen’s Park High School staff to face their nemeses on the water for the 2018 PTA Parents versus Staff Dragon Boat race grudge match! Last year, the staff’s winning streak abruptly ended after the parents stormed to victory, beating them in two out of three races. This year, the staff were unshakable and determined not to be intimidated by the goading chants of the warrior dressed ‘River Rats’ (aka the parents). The team spirit evident in both sides was formidable and the scene was set for a fierce and competitive match. In the first heat, it was clear that the staff needed to unify as a team as the River Rats’ synchronised rowing glided them through the water at speed and they surged to the finish line, in front of the on-looking aghast staff! Faced with the challenge of winning the next two races to regain their dignity and trophy, the staff needed to improve their technique to “paddle not

splash!” Showing pure grit, mettle and resilience, they found their rhythm thanks to their student drummer and Mr Nixon’s numeracy skills to win the second match. The contest was back on and it was dragon nose to dragon nose (neck to neck!) all the way in the third and final race, as both boats stormed to the finish line. Both teams were celebrating as they each believed they would be crowned the champions. After a photo finish it was declared a dead heat! The teams retired to the QPHS Boat House for a well-earned BBQ courtesy of the PTA and, although the staff felt they had been ‘robbed’, they graciously accepted the draw and shared the trophy and title with their rivals the River Rats! Headteacher Lyndsey Watterson said: “The event is a testament to sportsmanship and comradery, and it epitomises the community spirit amongst the QPHS staff, students, and parents alike. We look forward to winning next year’s race!”

Medals for Queen’s Park rowers at British Junior championships It was an exciting time for Queen’s Park High School pupils who took part in the British Rowing Junior Championships held in Nottingham. Facing some of the best competition in the country, the year 9 rowers proved their skills, technique, as well as speed in the J14 omnium event, with gold medals being awarded to the boys double of Iestyn Burke and Dylan Howard after competing against 44 other doubles and a Bronze medal for James Cox in the single event overcoming a tough field of 72 competitors. Other significant placing’s were Josh Williamson and Tyler Gordon who came an impressive 6th place in their double, Joe Bamber in 11th and Josh Halewood in 16th place in their singles. The boys’ quad of Iestyn Burke, James Cox, Tyler Gordon, Dylan Howard and cox Kiera Burke later raced for a place in the B final, coming 11th place overall. The WJ14 girls raced in doubles in the omnium event and Kiara Parleviet and Erin Kendall-Smith came a respectable 12th, Gracie Twigg and Beth Henderson Palmer came 20th out of a field of 62 competitors. Later the girls teamed up with cox Kiera Burke to race in the WJ14 quads where they were delighted to win their minor final. The Year 10 quad of Dan Williams, Ben Baker, Charlie Doyle, James Cox and Iestyn Burke came 18th overall after some tough racing against some of the best J15 quads in the country. The following day saw the year 11 girls double Kiera Burke and Zara Gautier-Price compete for a place in the WJ16 double AB final. After a successful time trial they then had to race to finish in the first 3 to get into the coveted A final. In one of the most exciting races of the day they overtook their main competition and qualified for the A final, finishing in an impressive fifth place overall. QPHS Chairman Richard Cox said: “These are the best results that Queens park high school rowing club has achieved at a National rowing competition for many years. The dedication of all our volunteer coaches who coach our students week in week out, along with the overwhelming commitment and drive from the athletes and the unwavering support from their parents has made this such a fantastic end to the season.” 32 To advertise call 350398
