Safety barriers at Edgar’s Field Park New safety barriers have been installed at the entrance to Edgar’s Field Park to protect children wandering off onto the busy road. Local councillors Razia Daniels and Neil Sullivan consulted with Friends of Edgar’s Field who helped design the new barrier. Cllr Sullivan said: “Over the years I have had several residents raise concerns about the safety of young children playing in the park who may run off onto the busy road. We considered various options and worked out a design which we think would work well to accommodate everyone as it is very important to get the design right and the right barriers installed in this very sensitive location.”

Parking problems Hello everyone – Over the last couple of weeks members of the public have again raised concerns regarding parking. More specifically parking on Cottage Close and Devonshire Place. I will focus some attention on these areas over coming weeks and deal accordingly. l The Speed gun has also been deployed on Lache Lane over the last few weeks. I am pleased to report that no vehicles were noted to be over the speed limit. l Anti-social behaviour of large groups of youths has been noted on the Meadows and its surrounding areas. I have seized empty drug containers at the location. This has been highlighted to my colleagues to offer some high visibility patrols in the area too. l Finally, these will be my final few weeks as PCSO in Handbridge, having been offered a new role within Cheshire Constabulary focusing on youth engagement

Rejuvapen HOW DOES IT WORK? The concept is based on the skin’s ability to repair itself whenever it encounters physical damage. Splash of spring colour
Spring is well and truly underway and there is so much to choose from if you want to add new additions to your garden. Starting with the small perennials I suggest a bright yellow Allysum saxatilis and pink or mauve Aubretia to cascade over walls in sunny spots. Both perennials like a well drained soil. If you have a shadier place with a moist light soil then why not see if the delicate Dicentra Formosa likes your garden. It has lovely light blue grey filigree leaves with little white pink or deep pink flowers. The variety Bacchanal has deep red flowers. Lovely against darker foliage. If you want a spreading shrub or small tree then you should consider an Amelanchier lamarckii or one of the many named varieties of Amelanchier x grandiflora. These pretty shrubs have delicate white flowers in spring and bronzy young leaves. In autumn the foliage turns orange and red looking great against a green hedge or with a background of Rhododendrons. They will cope with any moist but well drained soil in any aspect and light shade. A spring flowering climber is easy as there are so many clematis to choose from. Try Clematis alpina Constance with the deep pink hanging bell like flowers. Easy to grow and likes sun or light shade by a fence. If it gets too big, take the shears to it after flowering but generally it does not need pruning. Work to do in your garden can include sowing seeds of annuals such as Calendula (Marigold) and planting out summer bulbs and corms such as Gladioli. Plant seeds of tomatoes, marrows and courgettes in pots on a windowsill inside or wait till May when temperatures are higher to plant out in the soil. If you have planted broad beans in pots, harden them off gradually and plant out in late April. Vegetables such as carrots, beetroot, radishes and lettuce can be sown directly into the soil. Look out for gardens open under the National Gardens Scheme where all proceeds go to charities including Marie Cure Cancer Care and Macmillan Cancer Support. Community centre is taking shape Local councillors Razia Daniels and Neil Sullivan dropped in to see the fantastic progress being made on the new Handbridge Community Centre. Provision within the centre includes a hall and two community rooms to meet the needs of a range of organisations, groups and clubs. All the rooms will be linked to wi-fi and in the main rooms audio and visual presentation equipment will be provided. A commercial standard kitchen will provide very good facilities for catering. A servery area within the main area of the centre, where light refreshments can be prepared, will provide a pleasant place for relaxation and socialising.

Uniting children through the power of song Queen’s Park High School hosted the ‘All Voices’ concert with their partner primary schools. It featured songs from around the world, performed by children from Belgrave, Chester Blue Coat, Dodleston C, Eccleston CE, Hoole, CE, Overleigh St Mary’s and The Arches Community Primary Schools and supported by the Year 7 choir at Queen’s Park High School. Since September, each of the schools have been working with Miss Stanners, Teacher of Music at Queen’s Park High School, whose aim was to unite children through the power of song and give them the opportunity to perform in front of a live audience in a professional setting.

Oarsome achievement for rowing chief Richard Cox, chairman of Queen’s Park High School Rowing Club was named as the winner of the Regional Volunteer of the Year Award for the North West by British Rowing in recognition of his significant contribution to the sport. Richard said: “I was totally and pleasantly surprised to receive the award. It’s not just me who runs the Rowing Club, it’s one big team effort from the coaches, committee, parent helpers, parents, school and of course the students. Without everyone’s input the club wouldn’t survive, so it’s great recognition for everyone at the club and school that does something to help us to be so successful.”
The writing’s on the wall for students Year 7 students took part in a workshop with poet Sara Hirsch organised by Storyhouse in Chester. Sara helped students create poems based on identity, libraries, history and stories. These poems would then be printed in their own handwriting and displayed on the walls all around the theatre building. The students completed two poems: displayed outside the baby changing room and in the teenage fiction section of the library.

Crafty scheme to tackle loneliness A project to tackle loneliness among older women has been launched in Saltney. Women Makers Fab Club is a Brightlife funded project which is being run in partnership with ‘Woodwork to Wellness’ craft centre in Saltney. It will run till April 2019 and aims to reach out and engage older women who are isolated or experience feelings of loneliness. They may have experienced some form of significant “transition” in life; e.g. bereavement, surgery, sudden ill health, loss

of job or accident and/ or are struggling with daily tasks. The project focuses on supporting women in building their confidence and resilience whilst contributing to their overall health and wellbeing, helping them have new purpose or friendships and circles of support in community. An open day for any woman aged over 50 will take place on Monday 9th April 10am-3pm followed by regular free sessions planned to start on Mondays from 16th April, operating weekly from then on, between 10am and 12.30pm.
