Q Should I be concerned about how much water is used in spray-function toilets? MBE for Neston charity man Alan Johnson, the secretary and founding member of the Northern Lights Children’s Charity, has received MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List. Alan was recognised for his services to children with life limiting illnesses in the North West and North Wales. Alan set up the charity in 1987 in memory of his son Christopher, who lost his battle for life at the age of 5 after suffering with a brain tumour. Every December, the charity takes a group of 20 children with life limiting illnesses, aged between 6 and 11, on a short holiday to the Arctic Circle in Lapland to meet Father Christmas. He has tirelessly fundraised for Northern Lights for over 30 years and has often been named the voice of Northern Lights as he is the first to be found with a microphone in his hand communicating with supporters at any fundraising event. As coordinator, he is sensitive to the concerns of parents and the needs of vulnerable children and as a priority speaks to the parents to assure them of their children’s safety and build confidence in the charity. After 30 years of organising trips Alan manages the processes with precision ensuring insurance, communication and medical requirements are all in place to meet the needs. He is the operational coordinator when in Lapland which gives the volunteers and medical staff the time to be entirely focused on the children making them feel as special as possible. Karen Jones, MBE, chairwoman of Northern Lights said, “We are all so proud of what has been achieved in Christopher’s memory, a little 5-year-old boy who lost his battle against a brain tumour, a life that was cut so short but one that so many other children have now benefited from, none of which would have been possible without the dedication from Alan, we are all very honoured to work with him.” When notified of his nomination for an MBE Alan said “I cannot believe that someone like me could receive such an award. I am extremely honoured to receive this award but also very thankful to friends and family who have supported us over the last 31 years. Divers keep their heads above water A team of divers from Wirral Sub-Aqua Club completed the Great North Swim 1 Mile Event in Lake Windermere to raise money for Marie Curie Cancer Care. Following last year’s success in the Swimathon 2017 which raised over £1100 for Marie Curie, a group of five WSAC members decided to go one step further and enter their first ever open water swimming event, the Great North Swim. Again their nominated charity was Marie Curie. Training began in the swimming pool and, when the water warmed up, continued in Hatchmere, a shallow lake near Delamere, a favourite spot for picnickers and swimmers alike. The Great North Swim hosted about 10,000 open water swimmers over three days, who were taking part in swimming events of different distances from 250m to 10k with both casual and elite participants. Team Wirral Sub-Aqua arrived prepared for cold water and choppy conditions but the day was perfect and they all enjoyed the experience of such a huge event tremendously finishing within minutes of each other. The total raised this year is over £1500 and still growing. Team Wirral Sub-Aqua would like to thank all their sponsors for their incredible generosity which has enabled them to raise such a substantial sum for Marie Curie. Wirral Sub-Aqua Club meets at Neston Recreation Centre each week, and is holding Try-Dive event on Thursday, 28th June. Willaston World War One weekend

Willaston Residents’ and Countryside Society is working with local groups to plan a commemoration weekend to mark 100 years since the end of the First World War. They have set up a community sub-committee with representatives from the British Legion, Christ Church, Scouting, Guiding, Friends of Hadlow Road Station and the Festival Society. Over the weekend of 10th and 11th November, a variety of events will be held to remember those who did not come back but also to celebrate those who returned to Willaston at the end of WWI. These events will link in with the traditional village commemorative parade and church service on Remembrance Day. The detailed programme is still being developed but is likely to include: - A trail to learn more about the WWI people identified on our war memorial. - An exhibition about Willaston villagers’ involvement in WWI. - A commemorative event held on the afternoon of 11th November 2018 at Hadlow Road Station. The society would like to hear from anyone who had relatives that came from the village and served in WWI. The Festival Society has done significant research about those who served and did not return but we know very little about those who came back to Willaston at the end of the war and what happened to them. FRIENDS OF HADLOW ROAD STATION

Station sign is just fine! The Hadlow Road Station sign has now also been fully refurbished and fitted. This has involved replacing the rotten timber with a large sheet of special wood suitable for outdoors. The station sign has been fully repainted and drainage holes have been put in so that hopefully the new timber will not rot again for many years! The refurbished sack trolley has now been fitted to the platform and the second trolley is almost fully refurbished. Among other improvements, the recently planted Pyracantha have now been re-staked and tied. The fledglings in the signal have now flown, so work can now be planned for renovating and painting the signal. Thanks to the River-sign choir for attending on May Bank Holiday as everybody really enjoyed their performance on a beautiful sunny day. We have purchased a few more tables and chairs for the platform on pop-up-cafe days as our customer numbers continue to increase. Thank you for continuing to support us and look forward to seeing you when we open on 15th July, 29th July, 12th August and 26th Aug from 10.30.am to 1.30pm.

How decisions are made on your behalf if you lack capacity depends on whether or not you’ve made an Advance Decision (Living Will) or a Lasting Power of Attorney for Health and Welfare (LPA). Bishop Wilsonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s winning swimmers The swimming team at Bishop Wilson Primary School, in Burton, were declared the winners at a gala in Ellesmere Port. The children from years 4, 5 and six were pitted against their local rivals from 15 other schools at EPSV. When the competition closed and the points were totalled, the Bishop Wilson team were declared the overall winners and were presented with a magnificent shield.

Woodfall do wheely well

The whole of Year 5 at Woodfall Primary and Nursery School have taken part in this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Bikeability cycle training programme.

Pupils visit Tranmere Rovers Children from Woodfall Primary School had a wonderful morning at Tranmere Rovers Football Club to support their English topic of the World Cup. Tranmereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Tony Coomes took the group on a tour of the stadium, sitting in the changing rooms, walking down the tunnel and then onto the pitch.

The expert instructors from Cycle Experience spent four days at the beginning of May with the children, providing training for Bikeability Levels 1 and 2, taking them from the basics of balance and control on the school playground, to venturing out on to the roads near to school to prepare for on-road cycling. Each and every one of the 62 children in Year 5 rose to the occasion and completed what was a successful week.

CRIMEFILE Crimes reported to the police recently: Tannery Lane – Having returned home, a resident dropped the shopping bags left in hallway but left the front door open. In the meantime, a thief sneaked in and stole the bags and money from a purse. Shakespeare Road – The main entrance door to a block of flats was smashed. The Priory – Three hanging baskets were taken from a garden. Puddington Lane – A tow bar was removed from a Range Rover. Crookes Close – The word ‘poo’ was scratched onto the driveway, damage was caused to a fence and stones were thrown around the front of the house. Neston town centre – An unlocked Carrera mountain bike was stolen from near to a bus stop.

Bid to restore Burton well

Cheshire West and Chester Council’s application to Calor Rural Community Fund for Hampstons Well in Burton is through to the voting stage. The Well dates from the Iron Age and for many centuries was one of the main water sources for Burton villagers. The records of the Manor Court of Burton show that by-laws were laid down for the upkeep of the well. The men of Burton, along with the constable, had to clean the well on a regular basis and if these duties were neglected a fine of 6d was enforced on those individuals. (Information from the Wirral Journal vol. 3, no.2, 1986) Cllr Louise Gittins said: “This tranquil location is in need of some tender loving care to bring it back to its former beauty and this is our opportunity to do just that.”

Sunday 1st July The Liverpool - Chester Bike Ride passes through Neston during the day. There will be a chance for the cyclists to stop off at NCYC on Burton Road, to stock up on water, high-energy chocolate and fruit to freshly brewed coffee. Saturday 7th July The Happy Healthy Neston Fresher’s Fair takes place from 10am-12.30pm at Neston Town Hall, High Street, Neston. The event is open to the general public, and the organisers would like to invite groups to promote their activities and attract new members with the idea being to encourage people to be ‘happy and healthy’ Sunday 8th July The Parkgate Carnival takes place at Neston Cricket Club, Station Road, Parkgate, throughout the day, with profits going to the Northern Lights charity. Tuesday 10th July The next senior matinee, organised by Neston Flicks, is the 2017 film Victoria and Abdul, starring Judi Dench. It takes place at Neston Community and Youth Centre (NCYC), on Burton Road, Neston, at 2pm. There is table seating, it’s fully accessible and there are friendly volunteers. Friday 13th and Saturday 14th July Music from the Movies is the title of the new show from the Hadlow Green Singers, which is being performed at Willaston Memorial Hall at 8pm.
