improvements at High Road junction Improvements will be made at a troublesome junction on Chester High Road within the next 12 months. For many years now, the junction between Raby Park Road and the A540 has been devilishly difficult to navigate. Buses turning into the road also struggle to make the turn if there are cars queuing to get out. Cheshire West and Chester Council has responded to a petition and campaigns organised by MP Justin Madders, Neston Town Council and Pauline Fielding, whose son Andrew died at the junction in 1994. The improvements will be kerb realignments and a review of speed limits but plans to introduce traffic lights will depend on funding from external sources. Neston Town Councillor Ceri Lloyd said: “Mrs Fielding’s long campaign has had widespread support in our town, from our MP, from local members and from Neston Town Council. The response from CWaC is a most helpful step in the right direction and will add some important short-term safety features to one of the junctions. I am particularly pleased at the commitment from CWaC to look for external funding for a more comprehensive scheme that is essential to make the junctions much safer and improve traffic flow. We shall continue to campaign until this is delivered.”

High speed broadband on its way to Puddington Chester MP Chris Matheson was among the first few people to dig the new trenches in Puddington for the area’s first community broadband initiative. Broadband for the Rural North Ltd or ‘B4RN’ was launched in December 2011 by a local volunteer group led by industry expert Barry Forde. It is a community benefit company that allows local people in rural areas to invest in, build and then use their own highspeed broadband network. Get ready for Neston Music Festival There’s music in the air in Neston during April and May. Aiming to supplement the rich diet of home-grown musical talent already in the town, Neston Music Festival, from 14th April to 24th May, will be featuring a thrilling range of professional, semi-professional and outstanding amateur groups of musicians. Fordante Classical Crossover group, principal singers from Opera Viva, Rhos Male Voice Choir, Port Sunlight Orchestra and Rotary Young Musicians District Winners are just some of the attractions appearing. One of the organisers, Ina Bushell, said: “Why not bring it all here for a change? We’ve got everything you need. Pick and

choose or try something different. And it’s live and all here – no travelling for miles – relaxed, enjoyable.” The revived and extended Festival is being mounted by local volunteers and organisations who have come together to bring their normal attractions under a combined Neston Music Festival banner with marketing and publicity from the Town Council. The festival opens with the in-demand jazz group Brownfield-Byrne Hot Six playing at the Civic Hall on 14th April and closes with the popular Billy Thompson Gypsy Style at St Thomas’s, Parkgate on 24th May. Preparing for when the worst happens The benefits of making a Will, by John Cartlidge A Guarantee: There are many things in life we put off or don’t get around to. In some cases it may be no more than a matter of ‘low priority’. In others, it might be something considered unnecessary. Some people for example don’t have insurance because they may not value their possessions, or it might be they take the view ‘it won’t happen to them’. True, a flood, fire or theft may not happen and this is a matter of a person’s attitude to risk. One issue which is not a matter of risk, chance, or luck is our mortality. We are here now. At some point we will not be. (This is guaranteed). Problem is we don’t know when that will be. At some point, the arrangements we have made, or perhaps more to the point, the arrangements we have not made will then have a bearing.

In truth of course, this is not your problem. If you do not leave a Will then your family, the law or the courts will decide what to do with your savings, possessions, property and so on. This is of course presumes details of your savings and other assets are known, and perhaps some guesswork as to what you may have wished. It is ironic that the best person to deal with your affairs is you, but if you’re no longer here, well, then it can be difficult. A solution is to give thought to these matters and make the necessary arrangements, the foremost of course being to make a Will. In a Will you can: l Make funeral instructions. l Make specific gifts. l Donate to charity. l Gift sentimental items. l Appoint guardians for children. l Exclude beneficiaries. l Mitigate inheritance tax. l Avoid intestacy. A will does far more than most people think and perhaps the greatest value is the removal of the burden of decisions to be made upon those we leave behind. This is because so many of the difficult decisions have been made by the best person qualified to do so - you. Award winning illustrator inspires pupils The children’s book illustrator Lucy Letherland visited Neston Primary School recently. The visit was part of the school’s prize for winning the (UKLA) United Kingdom Literacy Association’s ‘Our Class Loves this Book’ award. Lucy inspired the pupils during the workshops she delivered. She talked about how she creates her vibrant, colourful and creative illustrations. The children were taught how to draw their own animals and had the opportunity to ask Lucy about her work, how she became an illustrator and her favourite types of illustrations.

Teenage tearaways are kept apart Two teenagers who have brought fear and misery to residents and businesses in Neston through persistent anti-social behaviour have been handed criminal behaviour orders. Dylan Marshall, aged 15, and Samuel Westhead, aged 14, both from Neston committed a string of offences including violence, physical assault, criminal damage, theft and drug use throughout the town centre. The order, which was granted at Chester Magistrates Court, prevents the teenagers from associating and communicating with each other and another boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, in any public place within Cheshire. They must not enter a defined area covering much of Neston Town Centre and Stanney Fields Park, except when passing through on public transport or in a private vehicle. Chief Inspector Alex McMillan said: “Our priority is to make our communities safer and in order to achieve this we will use any legitimate

method to proactively target those who are causing the most harm. “Dylan and Samuel repeatedly came to our attention for a variety of reasons and on each occasion the local community was caused considerable harassment, alarm or distress. “Despite their young age, the pair demonstrated a total lack of regard for the residents of Neston and their behaviour was wholly unacceptable. “Their actions drew a disproportionate demand on local officers which was simply unsustainable and a criminal behaviour order was only our last real option to tackle their offending. “I hope the community will feel reassured that with appropriate prohibitions now in place they can now enjoy a safe and peaceful environment. We would encourage any member of the community who see this pair together, or otherwise in breach of this order to report it to us by calling 101.”

Choir’s gift to children’s charity Neston’s NE Singers presented the Northern Lights Children’s Charity with a cheque for £537, which was the result of a Christmas carol concert given by the choir in the Parish Church in December and carol singing in Neston Market Square. More visitors enjoy station’s pop-up cafe The Pop-up-cafe has been a massive success despite the very cold early spring weather. The catering team have increased the number of volunteer helpers on the day, and they are looking for more volunteers and reviewing how they can improve on the kitchen. The next cafe openings will be Sundays 15th and 29th April from 10.30am to 1.30pm The dilapidated and rotten railway track has been taken up and the old sleepers totally removed and taken off site. This work was carried out on two consecutive weekends in freezing conditions by Tim and his very hard working loyal volunteers with the help of the Community Payback Team. The original wall plaque has now been restored and fixed back outside on the Waiting Room wall – thanks to Steve for this refurbishment. Chester Zoo will be taking down several trees when the weather improves and the south platform will be reinstated with a brick face and flagged top at a cost of £4k supported by grant funding. Three benches have now been fitted on the south platform one of which has a plaque dedicated to James Richard White who was a former train driver on this line. The Audio Visual (AV) display unit with PC in the waiting room is now ready for showing films which are currently being prepared for display.

Literary figures help to inspire creative minds Birkenhead School recently welcomed acclaimed children’s author, Robin Stevens to talk to Prep and Senior pupils from the School and local primary schools, and was organised in conjunction with Linghams Booksellers in Heswall. Robin visited as part of her ‘Spoonful of Murder’ book tour, to talk about the new instalment of her thrilling ‘Murder Most Unladylike’ book series. Robin is the UK’s sixteenth most popular children’s author and talked to the children about her passion for reading and writing when she was growing up and how she’d always wanted to “give stories to other people”. Wanting to read books with detectives her own age in them, meant Robin knew from an early age exactly which genre she wanted to write and her hugely popular murder mysteries are read by many children today. Following a reading from this latest release, it was then the pupils’ turn to detect and plan their own murder mystery. Robin started by highlighting the sections of the plan needed, the setting, the victim, the clues, the suspects and the resolution and together they started to set the scene for their story. This showed Robin’s enthralled audience just how easy it can be to

create the first plan of a mystery story and the creative process clearly inspired the audience members, with many of them starting to plan their own stories before even leaving the event. Robin Stevens’ visit is part of Birkenhead School’s wider English Enrichment programme and follows a talk from Mark Powers, the author of the children’s trilogy book series, ‘Spy Toys’, who visited in February. With the day of his visit being the day that Mark’s third book, ‘Spy Toys – Undercover’, was published, the children were particularly lucky to have him speak with them about his books, his love of writing and about how, they too, can become authors. Robin and Mark are the latest in a number of high-profile speakers who have visited the School in the past year, these have included TV presenter and broadcaster, Clare Balding, former England Cricket Captain, David Gower, OBE and TV presenter and actor, Sir Tony Robinson.
