SCHOOL CLOSURE

There is now one less school in Hoole following the closure of Abbey Gate Prep School, on Clare Avenue. The head teacher of the private school blamed increasing competition and smaller class sizes. The question now is what will happen to the site?

38

In this month’s edition we have news of World War One centenary plans for Hoole, a crime report, clubs news, Hoole History, gardening, thought for the month with Andy Glover, financial column, community listings and much more.

A Taste of Italy... While Alexander Armstrong has been showing us the hidden secrets of Italian architecture, Jamie Oliver has reappeared on our screens to guide us around Italian cooking, so we don’t need to imagine what draws us to visit Italy, whether it is a city break or an activity holiday. What these shows don’t do is let us experience Italy for ourselves, the historical buildings of Rome, the ruins of Pompeii, the godola ride in Venice, the romance of Verona or the beauty of the lakes and mountains in the North. The Eternal City of Rome, in whose name the Caesars sought to claim the world, opens for the visitor like a living museum, liberally dotted with fascinating ruins, surviving relics and archaeological sites. The centuries peel back with each new vista in this great city of gladiators, lunatic drivers and sumptuous pasta dishes. Vespas, nippy little Fiats and red sports cars speed past trendy sidewalk bistros and nightclubs, revealing the Rome of Fellini's La Dolce Vita; while the chillingly stark facades of the Stadio Olimpico complex remind visitors of Mussolini's attempts to reinvent the architecture of the Caesars. For a taste of the Baroque, visitors need only climb the famous Spanish Steps, walk through the Piazza Navona or toss a coin into the beautiful Trevi Fountain. Renaissance splendour is

perhaps best revealed in the Pope's residence, the Vatican Palace, or in Michelangelo's efforts on the roof of the Sistine Chapel. From early Christian Basilicas to the Roman Forum, the Colosseum and the Pantheon, the sequence of history trails back to the height of the Roman Empire. Global Travel Worldwide, Hoole invite you to experience first-hand the tastes of the city, and cook REAL Italian food. Buy your own fresh ingredients at one of the most famous food markets in the city, then a qualified and personal chef will unveil the secrets of Italian cusine to you. Fly from Liverpool to Rome on 7th October 2018 for a 3 nights stay, on a bed & breakfast basis from just £535pp*

Sadness as Hoole private school closes down As the new autumn term begins in September there will be one less school in Hoole. Abbey Gate Prep School, an independent school for children aged three-11, closed down over the summer. The school has been operating for over 100 years, initially in Walpole Street, then Victoria Road before moving to Clare Avenue in 2006. In a letter to parents, the head teacher Sally Anne Rhodes- Leader said that increasing competition from the likes of the St Martin’s Academy Free School, on Hoole Road, had made life difficult for fee-paying schools. She said: “The increasing number of independent and free schools in the area and our small class sizes means that the school is no longer viable.” She added: “Finally, as hard and as sad it is for me to inform you that our school will close, I believe that we can be proud of the history and accomplishments of Abbey Gate Prep School. “I am sure you realise that this has been an extremely difficult decision for the governors. On their behalf, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for the support you have given both to your child and to our school.” Abbey Gate College, at Saighton, will continue to operate as normal.

GARDENING BY JANET WEEDS

Early Autumn – September P

lants are in bloom earlier this year due to the dry weather which brings on flowering before the “normal” season.

Colour this autumn comes from Rudbekia fulgida Goldsturm, a jolly yellow daisy like flower with a black centre which flowers for weeks if kept watered. They do best in a heavier soil that retains moisture and need to be split and replanted every few years to maintain their flowering. Another flowering perennial that is doing really well this year is the Penstemons. These produce foxglove shaped flowers for a long period from summer to autumn, especially if you dead head them. They have bright green leaves and the flowers come in red, white, all shades of pink and mauve/blue. This year they have performed well in the heat when other plants have wilted. The smaller leaved variety Garnet with dark red flowers is very good for hot weather. If you are looking for colour from shrubs, then the Hydrangeas of all varieties are performing well if kept watered! They like a damper soil but if the leaves wilt, throw a couple of buckets of water on the roots and they should perk up. Although I love the Lacecap varieties, the mophead types are giving bold colour this year as you can see from the photo. Another late flowering shrub is Abelia Grandiflora. This needs a bit of shelter so a windswept site is not ideal. It has small neat glossy green foliage and in autumn has masses of small white scented flowers. Can get to 2m tall if left unpruned but cut it back after flowering or in spring and it will form a neat shrub about 1m tall. Work to do in the garden. Let your pumpkins and squashes harden off in the sun before bringing them in to a cool garage to store. Protect your brassicas with robust netting to avoid pigeons eating them over winter. If the soil is damp enough, perennials can be dug up and split and replanted. Crocosmias need this as after time they become congested and cease to flower well. Replant a few in soil enriched with well rotted manure for a good show next year. If you would like to visit gardens look out for gardens open under the National Gardens Scheme where all proceeds go to charities including Marie Cure Cancer Care and Macmillan Cancer Support. Mount Pleasant Gardens, Kelsall open on 1st and 2nd September, has 10 acres of gardens to discover including a sculpture trail.

CHESTER NATIONAL TRUST VOLUNTEERS Chester National Trust Volunteers (CNTV) is always pleased to welcome new members. The group carries out land management tasks on National Trust sites within a radius of 30 miles of Chester. We always have very varied work days and so far this year we have been repairing a dry stone wall at Bickerton, laying new footpaths at Alderley Edge and Thurstaston, building tree guards at Chirk Castle, managing bracken growth on the hill fort at Helsby and hedgelaying at Lewis Carroll’s birthplace at Daresbury. CNTV was formed over 25 years ago, a group of around 50 friendly people of varying ages, (18 - 70+), who enjoy friendship, working together and good fresh air. We work across Cheshire, the Marches (Chirk and Erddig) and the Wirral. What constitutes a work day? You can choose to work on a Tuesday or Thursday (or both). Arrive at the site at 10am (it may be possible to share transport but your own car is an advantage) and work until 4pm (with regular breaks – mid morning, lunch and mid afternoon). Do what you feel capable of, enjoy the company of likeminded people and breathe good fresh air! There is always a task for everyone. No prior knowledge or experience is required, only a willingness to get involved and work hard. Be ready for any weather and any job. After completing 50 hours of volunteering, there is the added bonus of receiving a National Trust volunteers card which entitles you to free entry at all National Trust properties, and discounts in many of their shops and cafes. If you are looking for an opportunity to spend time outside, give something back to the countryside and have fun – whatever your age or abilities – you can get in touch by contacting Dick Pole at dickpole@zcl-uk.net The work schedule and additional information can be found on https://chesterntv.wordpress.com/ programme/

Jail for man who punched Hoole jogger

A 29-year-old Chester man who punched an innocent jogger in the eye in an unprovoked attack has been jailed. Ricky Jones, of Earls Port in Chester, was sentenced to 12 months after pleading guilty to assault causing grievous bodily harm without intent at Chester Crown Court. The court heard how in January this year a 24-year-old man was out jogging along Philip Street, in Hoole, when he saw an unknown man running towards him. As Jones ran towards the jogger he shouted aggressively at him. The victim told Jones he didn’t know what he was talking about but he ignored him and instead sprinted towards him shouting ‘don’t lie to me’. In fear, the jogger then turned to run away from Jones but as he did he fell to the ground smashing his knee on the pavement. As the victim lay on the floor in agony, Jones stood over him and punched him in the eye before walking away. Jones was arrested by officers on 2nd February and charged on the same day. The judge called the attack on the victim ‘nasty, unnecessary and unpleasant’. Detective Constable Leanne Abbott, of Chester CID, said: “This was an incredibly intimidating and alarming assault on an innocent man who was simply out jogging. “Jones put the victim through a terrifying ordeal by displaying threatening behaviour in what was an unprovoked attack. The victim can have peace of mind that the sentence and the five-year restraining order handed to Jones means he won’t be a threat to him.”

Project work brings neighbours together For seven years, Geraldine and I lived just three streets away from each other in Hoole. Although we shared a neighbourhood, we had little to connect us. We have different professional backgrounds (science v arts), hobbies (running v camping) and personal circumstances (young family v dog owner). Like many people in Hoole, I travel out of Chester for work and therefore found it difficult to establish friendship links locally. With long working hours, a daily commute and a friendship/family network across the country to keep up with, there felt little time to get to know my neighbours. However, a few years ago when turning 40, I decided to make an effort to change this and invest more time in my community. It was this decision that led to me joining Soroptimist International’s Chester club in 2016 and in turn, where Geraldine and I first met. Soroptimist International is a voluntary

women’s organisation whose mission is to transform the lives and status of women and girls through education, empowerment and enabling opportunities. We focus on local, national and international projects, with current work including support for Chester Women’s Aid, education programmes in Nepal and Kenya and advocacy work linked to raising awareness of Modern-Day Slavery in the UK. Geraldine and I are now no longer anonymous neighbours. With members from the Club we plan, manage and deliver fundraising events together, organise and campaign on shared projects and learn lots from working with one another. When society focuses so much on what divides us, it is great to find connection with our neighbours, even when on the surface it may appear there is little in common. Calling out to the local community Whilst traveling in the Himalayas of India I rescued Indie a little puppy, I found injured starving yelping, severely dehydrated, with a broken back leg, open wounds on his ears, infested with fleas and mange, in a really terrible condition half dead on the side of the road. Less than two months old, he was so weak the first days I thought he would die. Slowly this little survivor came back to life. Indie and I bonded deeply. I fell in love with this soulful little being. I made a commitment to rescue him and some how, bring him home to England, a huge challenge and commitment. Together we travelled hundreds of miles hidden on night buses, taxis and scooters, from the Himalayan mountains to Delhi. Searching for a vet, a relocation services and boarding home for Indie. Delaying my flight, until eventually I was guided to the right people, who have been caring for Indie over the past two months. Until I can raise £2,500 to pay for the relocation to England and leg operation, Indie will remain disabled boarded in India. Indie has inspired me to create a ‘Rescue Center’ combining holistic therapies and therapy animals to help all people, especially those with mental health and disability issues. If you would like to be a part of making this happen donations can be made online at CrowdFunder Saving Indie

CRIME UPDATE with Police Community Support Officer Keith Bartlett

Nowhere to hide for vandals at disused building The area around a ramshackle building in Coronation Fields (the football fields off Hoole Road) has been tidied up so that police can keep an eye on who is using it. The old hut has been used lately by youths and homeless people – but the problem has been that the area around it was so overgrown, police couldn’t see who was in there. So the council has cut down the shrubs and trees which has made the hut more visible. PCSO Bartlett said: “We’ve worked with the council and partner agencies and they’ve had all the bushes cut back. “There have been some youths camping in there and not being seen, others have been climbing onto the building but hopefully we can now keep tabs on it.” Bowl patrol: Patrols have been stepped up near the bowling green at Hoole’s Alexandra Park after young cyclists rode all over it. The bowling green, which is used extensively over the summer, has been churned up. It has been made worse by the wet weather during August which softened the ground. PCSO Bartlett said: “The bikes have churned up parts of the bowling green, which makes it difficult for the bowlers so we’re doing more high visibility patrols.”

Hoole History Corner Linda Webb examines how the First World War affected us here in Hoole. On 11th November 1918 the guns of the Western Front fell silent after more than four years of warfare in the “war to end all wars”. 11th November 2018 takes on special significance as it marks the centenary of the Armistice which brought the First World War to an end. Hoole and Newton War Memorial The War Memorial on Hoole Road, dedicated on 1st April 1923, is familiar to us all. During 2014-2018, Hoole History and Heritage Society has been learning more of the memorial’s history, and how it came to be erected in its position on Hoole Road. The creation of a memorial was first discussed in July 1916, the year when, due to the course of the war, conscription had to be introduced by the Government. Hoole Urban District Council (HUDC) considered a Roll of Honour which would list all those who served in the Armed Forces. Further discussion was then deferred. The proposal was considered again, at a special meeting of HUDC on Saturday 11th November 1918, Armistice Day, and shortly after this, Newton Parish Council was invited to combine to form a Joint War Memorial Committee. Much debate about the form and the location of the memorial ensued. One consideration was the cost. The building of a Memorial Hall was suggested. A large stone memorial, listing all who served, and sited by the bowling greens in Alexandra Park, was also proposed. A public meeting was held in February 1919, where “much expression of opinion ensued”. In the end the public meeting voted for a memorial. The Minute Books of HUDC describe the Joint War Memorial Committee as reporting to both councils. On the 14th March 1921, a meeting of the full Council of Hoole Urban District received the recommendation of the Joint Committee, to pass a resolution approving the building of a Hoole and Newton War Memorial. The Memorial Hall idea was formally abandoned.

The location was chosen at this meeting, opposite ‘The Elms’ Council Offices on Hoole Road. The location is just within the boundary of the land locally governed by the Flookersbrook Trust under the Flookersbrook Improvement Act 1876. At the Ermine Hotel, on Thursday 10th November 1921, Maurice Thomas was appointed ‘a Trustee under the Flookersbrook Improvement Act 1876’ by the meeting called for this purpose by the Parish for the Township of Newton by Chester. Following the parish elections in 1922, he went on to succeed C.P. Smith as the Chairman of Newton by Chester Parish Council. William Williams, Chairman of Hoole Urban District Council, was also Chairman of the Flookersbrook Trust. ‘Mr William Williams explained that the Hoole Urban District Council and Newton Parish Council were desirous of erecting a monument in memory of the soldiers killed in the Great War and who had resided in the area under the jurisdiction of the two councils, on part of the land belonging to the Trust ‘ [Minute Book of the Trust, August 1921, courtesy of Flookersbrook Trust] The trustees ‘had no objection’ to this happening on Trust land in the location where the war memorial stands today. Three designs for the memorial were submitted, from which the one we know, designed by Mr F Davies MSA, was chosen. A roll listing soldiers from Hoole and Newton who had given their lives in the First World War was to be inscribed. Clegg & Sons, Stonemasons, whose showroom is listed in Kelly’s Directory 1914 at 11 Brook Street, executed the design. On Easter Sunday 1st April 1923, it was unveiled by Lieutenant General Sir Beauvoir De Lisle. The photograph of the Order of Service reveals wording linked to the inscription on the War Memorial, shown in the photograph of the base of the memorial. The service was conducted by the Bishop of Chester, who was assisted

by Reverend Pavitt from All Saints’ Church. Chester General Railway Station band played. Representatives from the Councils, the Hoole Fire Brigade, the British Red Cross, the Guides and the Scouts were in attendance. A large crowd filled all of Hoole Road. Although the erection of the War Memorial had been an initiative of the two Councils, and the Flookersbrook Trust had ceded the use of the land to this purpose, after the memorial was unveiled, the question of its maintenance and future care remained to be addressed.

The Order of Service 1st April 1923, depicting the memorial and echoing the inscription It was recorded in the HUDC minutes of the meeting of 10th September 1923, that HUDC, jointly with Newton Parish Council, resolved to take over the maintenance and all future care of the Hoole and Newton War Memorial. A panel dedicated to those who gave their lives in the Second World War was installed behind the War Memorial in 1949. This article is available on the Hoole History website hoolehistorysoc.btck.co.uk.

The next event of HH&HS is on Wednesday 19th September, the topic is ‘Religion in Hoole Part 2’ and the speaker is Ralph Earlam. This follows on from his talk to the Society in April of this year and will address the changes at All Saints Church in the twentieth century, the arrival of non-conformism and provision made for Welsh worshippers. Additionally, the response to the building of large housing estates in Newton after the Second World War will be covered, as will the story of three chapels on Hoole Lane and in Pipers Ash.

World War One centenary commemorated in Hoole A Chester-wide ceremony will take place at Chester Cathedral, as is customary, at 11am on 11th November. From 2.45pm on Sunday 11th November 2018 all are welcome to gather at the War Memorial, when Hoole and Newton propose to gather for a local Service of Remembrance and to mark the centenary of the Armistice. The Lord Mayor of Chester, Councillor Alex Black, wishes to be able to attend. Then, at 3pm there will be a short Service of Remembrance, followed by a joint service at All Saints’ Church. Detailed planning is underway, and arrangements and an Order of Service will be available in September. It is hoped that it will be possible, given the likelihood of larger numbers in attendance, to process from the War Memorial to All Saints’ Church. It is also hoped that the schools will take part in the joint service. Refreshments will be served at the end of the service. The occasion is being supported by local councillors for Hoole and Newton and by the Flookersbrook Trust.

JEWISH NEW YEAR BY THE REV ANDY GLOVER I would like to wish all our Jewish readers in Hoole “L’Shanah Tovah”, have a Happy New Year 5779. Rosh Hashanah occurs on the first and second days of the Hebrew month Tishri. In 2017 this will begin at sundown on Sunday 9th September and ends at sundown on Tuesday 11th September. The Jewish New Year celebration begins with the blowing of the shofar (the ram’s horn) in the synagogue. This marks the start of the ten High Holy Days of the Jewish calendar. In Hebrew, Rosh Hashanah literally means, “head of the year” or “first of the year.” Rosh Hashanah is commonly known as the Jewish New Year. The Jewish New Year is no different from that of other religions and cultures in that there are many traditions and symbolic foods associated with it. But unlike the UK culture, there isn’t lots of wild partying. Rather, the holiday is a period of prayer and reflection shared with one’s family and friends. There is, however, one important similarity between the Jewish New Year and the UK one: Many of us use the New Year as a time to plan a better life, making “resolutions.” Likewise, the Jewish New Year is a time to begin introspection, looking back at the mistakes of the past year and planning the changes to make in the New Year. Let’s explore a little the concept of new beginning; this can be in the arena of fitness and health, or maybe in the arena of relationships, throughout life we need from time to time to think about making a new start. But is it possible to start again or to begin to follow new course or direction in your life. Christianity has at its heart the concept of new beginnings, a second chance, and the opportunity to change. Forgiveness is a key to the embracing of new beginnings especially in relationships – is there someone you need to contact or reconnect with - a friend or family member, maybe even

your spouse or partner where a new beginning is needed. To build a relationship we will need to give and receive forgiveness, this is true in our relationship with God – many times in my Christian faith I have needed to know that I am forgiven. Maybe this month of September could be the time for you to experience a new beginning to experience the change you desire to see in your life. I hope that this “New Year” will be a year of new opportunities and experiences. Why not, as the hash tag on twitter says, #TryChurch Visiting a church for the very first time can be a tough experience. Where should I go? What should I wear? What time should I show up? What’s here for my kids? What can I expect? These and many more questions can surface. So I’d like to put you at ease. Your first visit to HBC Chester will be refreshing, friendly, and enjoyable for your whole family. We want you to experience inspiring music, helpful teaching from the Bible, friendly people, and a place where you feel welcomed and “at home”. This is a place where you can experience new beginnings! In September we shall be looking out for and ready to welcome any first time guests. On the 1st and 3rd Sunday of each month we gather together at Chester Catholic High School. We start at 10.30am and finishes by 12.15pm although we always serve good coffee at the end. On our website we have a page dedicated to helping out first time visitors to our Sunday Morning Celebrations http:// hbc.org.uk/visiting-hbc/new-tochurch During the morning there is usually singing, teaching that helps us to understand the Bible, prayer, listening and responding to God and an opportunity to meet with others. Children and young people are in the main church for the first 15 minutes of the celebration, after they go out

into their groups. There is also a crèche for under 3’s. My hope is that with any first visit to HBC Chester or any of the Hoole churches would be a friendly and enjoyable experience for the whole family. Here in Hoole at the “Hoole Lighthouse Centre” (HLC) - on the 2nd and 4th Sunday of each month we also have gatherings, if you have u=young children in particular you may like to pop into Messy Church, (9th September) we begin with refreshments at 10.30am. I would personally like to invite you along. This is what one person said who came along last year; “I was surprised when I got to the church that morning. It was different to what I’d imagined, and the people were very friendly. I didn’t feel like they were trying to shove religion down my throat, they let me make up my own mind. It was a very relaxed and welcoming atmosphere, just like one big family. I would recommend it to others: you never know where it could lead you. My whole life has changed completely in the last year.” I end with the Jewish New Year Prayer: “May you be inscribed in the Book of Life for a year of health, happiness and prosperity. Let this be a time for renewing faith and hope for peace.”
