THE closure of the Nat West branch in Heswall means that people have to travel a fair distance now to get to their bank. Meanwhile, the building has lain empty for months. Now, plans have been put forward to convert the key site into a restaurant, shop or bar.

Former bank building could become a restaurant The former Nat West bank in Heswall could soon become a restaurant or shop, if plans are approved by the council.

The building, on the corner of Telegraph Road and Pensby Road has been acquired and the new owner Steve Woods is hoping it will be occupied soon.

He has applied to Wirral Council for planning permission to change the use of the premises, with the potential for a restaurant, shop or bar.

Mr Woods told the Wirral Globe that he is hoping to bring in a national chain.

He said: “We are hoping it will happen pretty quickly. We don’t want to be hanging around.”

The frontage and the interior will be given a facelift to improve the look of the former bank which closed in September last year.

Bowled over by Probus Club

Heswall Probus celebrates its 50th anniversary this year.

The club is proud of its success over half a century, not least with the bowls section.

Throughout these years the club has played mainly at the Council Green on Poll Hill on Tuesday and Thursday at 2pm for 2-3 hours. They have regular matches against other local clubs and an annual tournament. Probus hope to stage two open days this year, depending on the weather, with a view to attracting some new players.

Help when someone dies The probate team can give advice following the death of a loved one The death of a loved one is always a difficult time. If you also have to deal with issues such as probate and administering an estate where there is no legal Will, it can be even more stressful.

Whenever a person dies, somebody has to put their affairs in order, deal with any inheritance tax and ensure that the beneficiaries get what they are due from the estate. If there is a Will, this person is known as the executor. If the person has died without making a Will (or if the Will is not deemed legal) then the person is said to have died intestate then intestacy rules apply in this situation and the person dealing with the estate is known as the administrator.

Faced with these responsibilities it can be a daunting task and Jacqueline Campion and John Cartledge at Campion Solicitors understands that at such a difficult time obtaining expert advice from the start is essential. Finally, they are responsible for making sure the remaining estate is divided amongst the beneficiaries according to the Will’s instructions or according to the intestacy rules.

Quartet stick together in tough marathon test The sweltering conditions didn’t stop four Heswall women from completing the London Marathon.

Farida Brooker, Bev Faulkner, Louise Russell and Ali Thompson completed the 26.2 miles in a time of 5hrs 34mins – but more importantly raised £9,386 in aid of the charity Wellchild.

Faridah said: “We did finish but it was slower than we were hoping for, however in the heat we couldn’t have done any better, and when you looked around and saw the amount of runners, and spectators needing medical help, we were lucky to finish as we did. We stayed together the whole way round and finished together. It was amazing running as a team and we really needed each other’s support! We also had friends cheering us along the way at various points which helped a lot too.”

Despite the heat, the quartet have not been deterred from doing it again and have entered the ballot for next year.

Great line-up for July carnival Planning for Parkgate Carnival on Sunday 8th July has been progressing brilliantly and the event programme has now been finalised.

Visitors will be able to enjoy a huge range of musical talent, creative performers, children’s amusements and a showcase of delicious artisan foods and fine Pictures from last year’s carnival wares from some of the most talented artists and crafters in the area. In addition to returning favourites, the Carnival has new features including a sports village, prosecco bar, a lifestyle hub, a coffee bar and an art and craft competition offering an array of food, drink, fun and opportunities.

All this has been possible due to the amazing support of local business sponsors and other businesses who have helped out.

The intention with the 2018 Carnival is to raise funds to take more children with life limiting illnesses on a holiday of a lifetime making an identifiable difference to their wellbeing.

Northern Lights chair Karen Jones MBE said: “Our team of committee volunteers has worked hard to put on an event that aims to top the 2017 Carnival. With exciting new features, stallholders old and new and a community that is so supportive we cannot wait for the drums to roll once again.”

Entry to the event is £2 an adult, with accompanied children under the age of 12 going free.

GARDENING BY JANET WEEDS

Blooms for June T

here are many beautiful perennials flowering in June and it is difficult to choose which ones to have in the garden.

I would love to have delphiniums but the slugs get them in my heavy soil. However, if you can keep the slugs off, they can pop up each year with tall spires of rich blue, pink or white flowers. In autumn many will flower again if you cut the dead flowering spikes off in summer. Another reliable perennial for damper soils are the magnificent Rodgersias with their large Horse Chestnut shaped leaves and tall robust stems with white or red flowers. I saw them at Dunham Massey garden last year growing with huge Alliums.

Alliums will flower each year and are often teamed with roses. Will thrive in heavier well drained soils and are especially good in drier borders.

Shrubs can form the backbone of a border so why not indulge in a Deutzia. A small on Deutzia Gracilis has little white flowers or Rosealind a taller shrub to 1m with rich pink clusters of flowers. They will grow in sun or lights shade and any soil provided it is not dry. For a larger shrub or small tree one of my favourites are the Sambucus or Elderflower with the purple or golden foliage. Sambucus Black Beauty likes a damp heavy soil and has pink flowerheads in early summer. Make Elderflower cordial with the flowers and it will be pink! Roses are centre stage in June so make sure you feed them well with a proprietary rose feed, spray with soapy water to remove an excess of whitefly and keep dead heading them.

Work to be done in the garden includes trimming Privet and Box hedging. Prune any shrubs that have finished flowering.

Keep climbing roses and clematis tied in and under control. Keep removing any side shoots from tomatoes. Thin apples, apricots and plums where there are many fruitlets on stems to one or two. Continue planting radishes, small carrots and lettuces for succession.

If you would like to visit gardens look out for gardens open under the National Gardens Scheme where all proceeds go to charities including Marie Cure Cancer Care and Macmillan Cancer Support.

Award for students who helped with mental health issues Eight students have received an award after offering mental health advice at Neston High School.

Since completing the training to become Mental Health First Aiders Kate, Will, Jacob, Jack, Paisley, Erin, Adele and Morgan have offered drop in sessions to students at Neston in the lunch breaks and have led assemblies and parent information evenings to raise awareness of the need to look after pupils’ Mental Health.

After being nominated for the West Cheshire Youth and Community Awards 2018, the students along with Mrs Lacey, Miss Crilly, Mr Dool, Mrs Hudson and their parents were invited to attend the award ceremony at the Forest Hills Hotel.

It was a humbling evening with children and adults from across the county who has taken part in outstanding projects and service to their communities and we were delighted that our students were the winners of the Mental Health and Wellbeing Project.

The Mental Health First Aid students won the award because the council ‘wanted to hear from a project that has listened to the needs of young people, working innovatively and creatively to support emotional health and wellbeing.’

New manager at Heswall care home A Heswall care home has welcomed a new manager whose fascinating career started out at 16, training in the same hospital as a famous hip-surgeon.

The Hazelwell, a residential, nursing, palliative and respite care home in Heswall, has appointed the extremely well-qualified Kathryn McGuinness into their top leadership role as care home manager, and is looking forward to benefitting from her rich career and life-experience.

Kathryn, who has had a varied and successful career in the world of nursing and caring, realised it was the career for her when at 16 she worked as a cadet nurse at Wrightington Hospital where the pioneering hip surgeon Professor John Charnley, MBE, was based.

After going on to train at Ormskirk hospital in Lancashire, Kathryn’s career has seen her move to hospitals around the country in different prestigious roles, including orthopaedic trauma, A&E, a senior sister for NHS Direct, and an assessor for a drug and

alcohol charity.

In Kathryn’s new role she will be heading up the staff team at The Hazelwell, a luxury care home situated on the former site of the Cleaver Hospital.

The 55-bed care home opened in July, 2016 and has been rated as ‘good’ by the CQC, the independent regulator of health and social services in England.

Kathryn said: “I saw The Hazelwell and all it had to offer and I fell in love with the place. I was over the moon to get the post.

“I’m really excited to be a part of the excellent team at The Hazelwell and to share what I have learned throughout my career to continue to make The Hazelwell the best care home it can possibly be.

“I had no idea when I started out as a cadet nurse at 16 where my career would take me, but I’m so happy when I think of the journey I’ve been on and how it has led me here.”

GUY STAGG – THE CROSSWAY Guy Stagg suffered with mental illness for many years decided to undertake the journey from Canterbury to Jerusalem, a walk that is a staggering 5.500km long in the hope that it would help heal him. He walked alone encountering harsh weather, terrorism attacks and relying on shelter provided by churches and monasteries. This was an utterly compelling account of a man travelling and coping with his inner demons and what it takes to hold on to faith in our turbulent modern world.
