angel fire treasure with a plethora of pets, including a miniature poodle she dressed up in doll's clothes, a parakeet, and “every small mammal you can imagine — gerbil, hamster, mouse, rat, guinea pig, rabbits … .” Gaffney was, unfortunately, allergic to cats, a condition she later remedied through allergy shots, her profession and owning cats. The daughter of a medical doctor, Gaffney says she never wanted to follow her father into that profession. “It’s stressful enough to tell people that their dogs are dying!”
Susan F. GaffneyDVM beloved by all A love of critters and mountains led vet Susan Gaffney to Angel Fire. When Susan Gaffney tells her story, one is tempted to imagine it is the same for everyone who enters her chosen profession. A Doctor of Veterinary Medicine and the owner of Angel Fire Small Animal Hospital, Gaffney says, “When I was in second grade, I started telling everyone I wanted to be a vet.” Like so many animal lovers, her parents indulged her passion

She and husband Tim met at the vet school (“he was a vet tech for surgery and equine anesthesia”) and, Susan says, “he taught me how to cross-country ski.” She adds with a smile the “worst grade I ever got” was the result of an ill-timed trip to Colorado when, she and a small group of fellow students decided one horse was not enough to keep them home for their equine rotation duties. “We drove all night in his Triumph sports car, camped in the snow, and cross-country skied Saturday and Sunday.” Their teacher was so furious he gave them all Fs for the rotation, which landed Susan a C for the course. “My mother said, ‘Why did you get a C and who is this boy you’re dating?!’”
Gaffney is soft-spoken, friendly and gentle — qualities that make her perfect for her chosen profession — with a strong dose of dogged determination. A 1986 graduate of Oklahoma State University, she worked 10 years for a busy Tulsa practice before the mountains beckoned. Thinking they’d relocate to Colorado, Susan got a second license there, but a strong familiarity with the mountains here (Tim had worked as a Philmont Scout Ranch guide/instructor) also led them to investigate Northern New Mexico. “We decided we liked the people better in New Mexico. Every place was really expensive to live so we started looking at this area. I really wanted to love working where I lived, so I decided to open my own practice.” They made the leap in 1996 when their two children Lewis and Erin were 2 1/2 years and 10 months old respectively. Susan earned a living by making house calls in the Angel Fire area, then driving over 2 hours to work a 15-hour shift followed by a 24-hour shift at an emergency vet clinic in Santa Fe — a grueling schedule she kept for over 3 years! Tim also worked for about a year, before coming to the realization that it made more sense for him to oversee the construc-
tion of their new home and care for the kids. “What really killed us was childcare. He started building the house himself with help from other contractors.” Tim had also worked as a molecular biologist in a genetics lab so, with their parents’ guidance it should come as no surprise that Lewis and Erin both excelled at science—son Lewis is a biomedical engineer and daughter Erin has a PhD in Chemistry and is a patent agent. Both excelled at Alpine ski racing and Lewis was a collegiate national champion for cyclocross in 2014. Angel Fire Small Animal Hospital’s website notes, “The whole family loves to ski, bicycle, hike, camp and fish, the main reasons they moved to this beautiful area.” But Susan recalls the early days in Angel Fire were not so idyllic. “It used to make me so mad when people would come in and say, ‘Oh the snow is so nice! Have you been out yet?’ It was torture to be so close and not be able to do it!” With help from a Small Business Administration loan and family members, she opened her Angel Fire Small Animal Hospital in 1997 and today oversees a busy practice that includes two certified vet techs, two full-time and one part-time assistant and one part-time veterinarian, Rachel Valentine, a large animal vet who owns and operates Blue Grama Veterinary Services in Black Lake. “It definitely helped having Dr. Valentine join me because I was stuck in a rut,” Susan says.
Formal continuing education is a priority, too, but Susan says she also enjoys visiting vet school friends at their clinics. “I hang out for a day to see how they’re doing stuff.” Asked what innovations have most impressed her, Susan ticks off new drugs improving outcomes for sick pets and digital radiography. “You take the xray and, boom! It’s on the computer!” A strong believer in preventative care, Susan says, “I’ve always been big on dentistry. The best thing you can do to make your dog live longer is to clean their teeth.” Susan stays active at her business and, along with beloved house pets, has been known to treat bald eagles, fawns, hummingbirds, owls and other wild things before sending them to the Española Wildlife Center for rehabilitation. Naturally the internet gives potential clients ready access to reviews, but Susan’s are overwhelmingly positive. “I wish they were in Tyler, Texas," one out-of-town visitor gushed, "I would switch vets in a minute.." Another, a local who has since moved to Taos, said, “Susan Gaffney helped bring my beloved Golden Retriever into this world and cared for her all her life. She truly loves animals and takes care of all of my pets with the same care and compassion.”

Angel Fire’s Vietnam Memorial Westphalls' peace and brotherhood legacy In May 1968, when U.S. Marine Corps officers made their way out to Dr. Victor Westphall on his Val Verde Ranch he was busy digging a water line he hoped would make a lush,

green golf course on the 800-acre ranch – a ranch he envisioned as a resort that would also include homes and a small ski area. After they delivered the news that his
eldest son, 1st Lt. Victor David Westphall III, had been killed along with 16 other men in an ambush in Con Thien, Vietnam, Westphall’s vision for his ranch died... and a
new dream took hold. In a 1998 interview, Westphall (“Doc” to everyone who knew him) said he and his wife, David’s mother Jeanne, were
discussing what to do with David’s insurance money when she came up with a “Vietnam Veterans Peace and Brotherhood Chapel.” They hired Albuquerque architect Ted Luna to come up with a design. “My only charge was that anyone who entered the chapel would not leave with the same ideas about peace and war,” Doc Westphall said, pointing

phall Veterans Foundation until it became a New Mexico State Park in 2005. Then, in 2017, the Department of Veterans Services stepped in to manage the facility. Over the years, the site has seen numerous changes. Its visitor center and museum offer a library of over 1,000 books and 2,000 photographs, memorabilia exhibits, touchable displays, artwork, and sculptures, amphitheater, memorial walkway with bricks commemorating over 5,000 veterans (more are added every year), memorial gardens, a Huey Helicopter on display on Memorial grounds, and the gravesites of Doc and Jeanne. The Memorial also overlooks the Angel Fire State Veterans Cemetery, which opened in July 2020.
to the chapel’s “soft, gentle curves which are the epitome of peace.” During construction of the chapel, Dr. Westphall lived in a “homemade pickup camper” on site, doing much of the work himself. Although he was not inexperienced, the design presented some challenges. “As you walk in the chapel, look at the walls — it’s as if you took a shoe-
box and twisted it. It was intricate interior work.” He was at the point of despair, when “A young carpenter came in the door. I put him to work within five minutes.” On May 22, 1971, the 3rd anniversary of David’s death, the chapel was dedicated — 11 years prior to “The Wall,” the national Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washing-
ton, D.C. The chapel was ultimately used to propel the creation of “The Wall,” but in 1968, a memorial to Vietnam veterans was an unpopular notion. For years, the Westphall family relied on their own funds and donations to keep it going. Senator Pete Domenici (R-NM) twice tried to have it designated as a national memorial and others tried to
have it designated as a national monument before the DAV (Disabled Americans Veterans) took over management in 1982 and built a visitors’ center at the site. Dr. Westphall subsequently battled with the DAV over his role at the memorial and in 1998, the DAV relinquished the memorial back to Westphall. It was operated by the nonprofit David West-
In July 2023, The Santa Fe New Mexican reported advocates had raised enough funding to build a replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial wall, which will be half the size of the 500-foot-long Washington, D.C. version. Army veteran Chuck Howe, founder of the National Veterans Wellness and Healing Center of Angel Fire and a board member of the David Westphall Veterans Foundation, hopes to build an adjacent ‘War on Terror Memorial’ “because the people fighting this conflict are the sons and daughters and grandsons and granddaughters of Vietnam Veterans.”
Though it is, primarily, an Angel Fire Vietnam Veterans Memorial, from the beginning, the Westphall family envisioned their chapel as a memorial to “soldiers of all nations … of all wars, giving particular attention to Vietnam Veterans,” Dr. Westphall said. In 1998, 30 years after David’s death, Dr. Victor Westphall was sitting in his office at the Memorial when a visitor peeked inside to say, “I just wanted to say thank you for creating such a beautiful place.” They visited for a bit, before Westphall turned back to the conversation at hand, noting about many of his visitors, “[The Vietnam War] is ancient history to them. They forget the horror … almost as if it were a game that people play from time to time. Bullets are real. People die.” At the chapel, there are two inscriptions from writings by David Westphall, one of which reads, “At the sight of the heavenly throne Ezekiel fell on his face, but the voice of God commanded, ‘Son of man stand on your feet and I will speak with you.’ If we are to stand on our feet in the presence of God, what then is one man that he should debase the dignity of another?” David Westphall once said, “Every day, at least once a day, I recite the two inscriptions … At times of greatest stress, I voice them to myself. It has sustained me … .”

‘Best of the best’ duo
Making sure your children do their best! > EVERY FALL, SKI NEW MEXICO — THE STATE-WIDE TRADE
organization tasked with promoting New Mexico skiing, recognizes higher achievers in the ski industry with its “Best of the Best” awards for individuals who shine in customer service, ski patrol, rental shop and ski instruction. This year, Angel Fire Resort instructors Elke May and Sebastian Cuadra Rivera jointly shared that honor for the 2022-2023 winter season. Along with Elke’s dad Robin May, director of the resort’s 14,000-square-foot Angel Fire Ski & Snowboard Center, the duo help manage the busy facility, which welcomes children ages 3 to 12 all winter long. Small class sizes — three students per instructor for ages 3-5, five students to one instructor for ages 6-9 and six students to one instructor for ages 10-12— are a huge reason children get the best experience. According to the resort’s website, during holidays its children’s programs “can sell out weeks in advance.” “We cut off sales,” Elke says, to keep small student-to-teacher

ratios that assure success. “I’d rather they be disappointed they didn’t get a reservation in time than keep it open and have classes that are too large for effective teaching, and having the guest have a disappointing experience. We don’t babysit and we don’t warehouse kids for the day. We have reasonably high expectations that we will get them skiing and riding and loving the sport.” Most children, depending on their ages, average four to five hours on snow. “Three-year-olds are going to have longer breaks,” Elke notes, to which Sebastian adds, “And if there's someone who feels a bit more tired and may need a nap, they can get one.” According to Elke, children start the day with “indoor static exercises so when we go on the snow, it’s effective time.” The resort also uses innovative technology to assure each child’s safety and success. Angel Fire Resort is the first ski area in New Mexico to use “Flaik,” a GPS system. In addition to real-time tracking — and no lost children — Flaik allows Robin, Elke, Sebastian and other instructors to move children into different classes based upon their needs. Children who are advancing quickly may move into a more advanced class, while children who need more time may move into a class that better matches their ability. (Skiing, like everything in a child’s life, has more to do with the child’s development, not just age.) “Our supervisors can ‘drag and drop’ [using the child’s Flaik ID] a child from one class to another,” Elke notes, “and all
their information [food allergies, medications, special notes] goes with them.” To which, Sebastian adds, “If we see something that needs to be adjusted, we’ll move a kid to a class where they feel comfortable. Every single kid is in the most suitable lesson possible.” Every child leaves the day’s lesson with a progress card that outlines their skills, accomplishments, and general mastery (accomplishments that are rewarded with stickers and other incentives). “We want to make sure they’re learning and also challenged,” Robin concludes. The system has made a hectic job just a little less stressful. On a busy holiday weekend, Robin says 200-250 children ages 3 to 12 will pass through the facility for one of several day-long programs that include a lesson — starting with check-in at 8 a.m. and ending with pick-up at 3:30 p.m. The self-contained facility provides rentals, helmet, lunch, (nut-free) snacks, lift ticket and a progress card, along with the Flaik GPS system. “After the lesson is done, parents get a link to a satellite map of their child’s day,” Elke says. Lunch and many snacks are chef-prepared — a benefit that not only enhances the child’s enjoyment, but also can be a powerful motivating tool. “Our kitchen manages to provide amazing home-made meals every single day,” Sebastian says, “and that, at times, helps us motivate kids to power through the day or give them the fuel they need.” — ellen miller-goins

Flexible Flyer tube, just hands steering all the way – what a ride! There’s also sitting on a platter sled, spinning and careening down the slope – more fun to be had by all who dare. But sledding can be après ski or it can be a daytime activity, sure to get kids wowed and finally weary, ready to hit the hay and up for another day! Check out the hill behind Village Ski Shop or along one of Angel Fire’s Greenbelt Trails. CAUTION — sledding on or onto village streets is a NO GO – too dangerous for all concerned. Best check out the Angel Fire Tubing Hill, a four-lane thrill ride for those who are at least 42 inches tall; or check out the Angel Fire Resort Sledding Hill by the Country Club. The sled hill is at the driving range, according to staff who run the Sled Hill & Nordic Center in the winter (it’s the resort’s Golf Pro Shop in summer). At 150 to 200 feet long, staff say the hill provides a perfect winter fitness option – lots of parents want to go with the kids, but they’re coming from low altitudes, like Houston and such. So it’s a huge workout.

Better that folks get a drink at the Country Club and take it down to the sled hill, which is right close by. Parents have to be on the hill, but benches are right out there for them to chill while kiddos do the hill. Perhaps even better, the Par & Grill is open then and they serve sandwiches, burgers, soups, hot chocolate, hot toddies and more. Parking is right at the sled hill, so just drive up and park, although there is a shuttle service

(condensed milk or half-and-half), sugar and vanilla. Mix, eat. For variety, add a shot of espresso, chocolate syrup, cinnamon, etc. Or try mixing maple syrup, cream and snow. Enjoy!
Snow cones Make snowballs from fresh snow — avoid the yellow kind! — and
place on sugar cones. Top with condensed fruit juice, Italian syrup or soda pop.

Bore a thin hole straight down in the snow, pour in maple syrup and let it freeze. Dig out snow around syrup, rinse as needed and eat!

Sightseeing Vietnam Veterans Memorial. Built outside the Village of Angel Fire on US 64, by Dr. Victor Westphall and his family to honor his son David and other Vietnam casualties, the memorial includes a visitor center and museum, with a library of over 1,000 books and 2,000 photographs, memorabilia exhibits, touchable displays, artwork and sculptures. The Memorial also includes an amphitheater, a memorial walkway, memorial gardens, a Huey helicopter display, and overlooks the Angel Fire State Veterans Cemetery, which opened in July 2020. away from the hustle and bustle of a ski resort. Here’s a few extras you must do, whether you also ski or board. They’re too good to pass up. Snowmobiling. Angel Fire is the starting off place for trails going all the way to the Garcia Park area, El Nogal Campground in Taos Canyon, Pot Creek and Tres Ritos. Trail heads are located off Brazos Road in Angel Fire, County Road B38/Forest Road 76 south of Angel Fire; and the Elliot Barker trail head on US 64. The best way to access the Carson Forest trail network is along the Plains Electric right-of-way under the “high-line” climbing from Angel Fire to Apache Pass. Best to get a trail map. Imagine snuggling down under a mountain of blankets and being pulled through the woods by big, beautiful draft horses. Roadrunner Tours owner/operator Nancy Burch offers old-fashioned sleigh rides for groups. Hiking. For spectacular and warmer winter weather hiking, visit the Wild Rivers Recreation Area on the Rio Grande, just north of Questa off State Road 522. Wear layers and pack an extra jacket in your backpack. Inquire locally to make sure the hiking trails are free of snow. By mid-February this is often the case. Amateur tracking. See breathtaking landscapes of fog, clouds, snow and ice-crystals. Identifying wildlife tracks in the snow can be a fun activity for the whole family in winter. Two of the most familiar types of tracks are canids (dogs) and felids (cats). But a wide variety of other tracks exist, including elk, deer, rabbits, turkeys and other birds.
Taos Pueblo. Continually inhabited for over 1,000 years, a visit to the tribal land is must-do. The Pueblo charges an entrance fee and additional fees for taking photos, sketching or painting. Taos Pueblo is open ThursdayMonday with optional guided tours, weather permitting. Late winter to early spring the Pueblo closes for about 10 weeks, so call ahead, 575-758-1028. Shopping. Shopaholics celebrate! Angel Fire is filled with more shops than you may have time for. Find hand-carved furnishings, imported gift items, books, jewelry, fabrics, pottery, rocks, clothing — upscale, ethnic, Western-chic, casual and second hand — ski wear and gear, souvenirs, antiques, moccasins, drums and more. take back to the office (though you can still do that), and more than just a place to call your order in and pick it up. But be aware, the posted menu behind the counter can occupy a lot of time if you haven’t memorized it. There is first the sandwich, breakfast or lunch, and then the original dressings to dip it in. Everyone seems to have their favorite of Hannah’s creations. And there’s so much more to drink than coffee and espresso. There’s a wide range of Boba (bubble teas) they bottle themselves. You MUST try the green chile lemonade with glitter! Taty At The Bump has lots of indoor and outdoor seating. Inside there’s art everywhere on the walls, a mirror wall, and plants — hanging from the ceiling and in pots on the floor. Hannah raises all the plants herself. The art is by locals and all for sale – except the 100-year-old Christmas cactus. As I write this in the Fall, I’m really looking forward to their holiday themes in the décor. The owners, after years of being employees themselves, are dedicated to keeping their staff by providing a great place to work. Taty At The Bump has a Facebook page where it honors its employees, updates regulars on specials and new items on the menu. Definitely a must-do in Angel Fire! — Jacqui Binford-Bell
