It’s hard to beat the sparkling Wintery landscapes followed by cosy log fires in rugged wooden cabins.

coast to coast

I’ve always had a love of travelling since being bitten by the bug at a young age when visiting family living in Majorca. I started off my working life scuba diving which led me to travel extensively all over the world from Madagascar to Honduras. I then worked as a tour leader for Explore, leading adventure tours – my favourite places were Croatia and India. After having my son I worked in the UK for a Lapland specialist and then I started as an independent Travel Counsellor 4 years ago and haven’t looked back. I love running my own business making my client’s dream holidays a reality and it’s made even better living here in beautiful Penarth. From Penarth’s coast I spend my days planning trips abroad to a variety of other coastlines for my customers. With winter on its way it’s time to start thinking of destinations for the colder months and whether to go in search of sun or snow. One of the most common questions I get asked is when and where to go to see the elusive Aurora Borealis or ‘Northern Lights’ which is on so many bucket lists. I have even been asked when they get switched on, which would be nice if it were true but there is an element of luck involved as they can make an appearance at any time in the far north, generally between September and April.

Coast to Coast

The Hygge concept originated from Norway and Denmark, and Scandinavia is a great place to start if you’re hunting The Lights this Winter. It’s hard to beat the sparkling Wintery landscapes followed by cosy log fires in rugged wooden cabins. In Lapland you can even book to see Father Christmas himself whilst you’re there plus there’s a host of other activities to try such as snowmobiling, ice fishing, skiing, husky and reindeer sledding. Iceland is also a real cultural hot spot and it’s easy to see why the country has seen its visitor numbers double in the past 5 years. With a striking coastline as well as cities that boast funky cafes and boutique shops it also offers the chance for whale watching, geysers, glaciers and hot thermal lagoons and as a bonus it’s a great place to see The Lights. This January you can fly direct from Cardiff to Akureyri for a three night break in northern Iceland’s jaw dropping scenery of lava fields, volcanoes, snow-capped mountains and fjords. This includes a ‘Search for the Northern Lights’ excursion and a ‘Lake Myvatn – Land of Fire and Ice’ trip which will greatly appeal to GOT fans. I love the option to stay in a studio with a private hot tub on the balcony for the ultimate hygge moment of cosy contentment. In terms of where to stay there’s so many choices from traditional wooden cabins, quirky

treehouses, glass igloos and even the Ice Hotel which is built purely from ice blocks every yearand yes the beds are also made of ice! A cruise is also a great way to get away from artificial light and maximize your chances of spotting Aurora Borealis. Hurtigruten offer cruises along the length of the coast in Norway, and they’re so confident you’ll see The Lights that if you don’t you’ll get another chance on a free voyage.

The Lights are a very special natural phenomenon and whilst photos of them look stunning they are ten times better in real life as they ‘dance’ and swirl across the sky. Top Tips: Ask your hotel to wake you up if the Northern Lights put on a show - they often appear in the very dead of night and you won’t want to miss them! You can also download an ‘aurora’ app to your phone which monitors realtime auroral activity and notifies you when they are likely to be seen.

Hoo Ga!

For those that don’t know what ‘Hygge’ is or how you say it, well look no further... In both Denmark and Norway, Hygge pronounced Hoo Ga refers to a form of everyday togetherness a pleasant and highly valued everyday experience of safety, equality, personal wholeness and a spontaneous social flow. Here is you’re quick fix guide on how to embrace it… 1. Candles – Light your candles and if you don’t have any then it’s time you treated yourself to one or three. The choice of candle brands is endless and my favourite of all time are produced by Sloane Home based in Cowbridge, Vale Of Glamorgan. What is so delightful about this brand is there are so many Hygge related products... www.sloanehome.co.uk

2. PJS – Wear your best comfy pyjamas or loungewear and wear them all day long! Yes 8

Penarth View

Hygge Retreats

you heard correctly this is all about investing time in you and to do that, you need to feel comfortable.

3. Food & Drink – Stock the fridge up with plenty of your favourite delicious foods. Plan a picnic at home. Include a good quality coffee and rich hot chocolate brand. Make sure the fizz is on chill or a cheeky G&T with your friends.

4. Book Worm – collect a bundle of your favourite magazines and a page turner of a novel. This is the time where you get the opportunity and the peace to go from cover to cover in one sitting. Our local book shop Griffin books has sourced a lovely selection including a book about Lagom which is said to describe the basis of the Swedish national psyche, one of consensus and equality. 5. Friends – invite your besties over and invite them to stay over if you have the space. Nothing more fun than sharing all the yummy hyggeness chocolates, movies and chit chat than with your mates. Plus the following morning a good coastal walk for quality fresh air and a grande latte should be on the cards!

7. Tunes – music of all genres is the best tonic to blow away the cobwebs and help you destress. Even if you don’t have a playlist ready why not tune into the radio. With DAB available everywhere these days we are spoilt for choice so blast those classics and dance like no one is watching.

8. Bath & Bubbles – indulge in a long hot soak with your favourite scented bath salts or oils. Why not take the glass of fizz and your favourite book in with you. This is your time of indulgence so you have the right to do what the hell you like!

9. Good Conversation – where did it go 6. Nap Time – enough said just do it!

all of a sudden? We humans are social creatures and hiding away from good conversation isn’t

good for our souls. Be inquisitive and start new conversations, dare to ask your friends how they are, no how they really are. Even start a new topic of conversation about a subject you don’t know too much about. Live and let learn!

10. Unplug – Just try it, switch the phone off for a least 12 little hours. I managed it one Sunday and it felt so liberating. I bet you will surprise yourself on how much you actually enjoy the freedom. More than anything you need to unplug to let Hygge into your space. So I dare you to try it and I also dare you to daydream whilst you are unplugged. If you find you don’t get the time or the opportunity to ever indulge in such simple pleasures then maybe you need to book onto a Hygge Retreat?... Penarth View

hygge retreats Hygge Retreats gives you an opportunity to enjoy some pure escapism. What you can expect… Arrive Friday evening to a welcome drink, dinner with wine and time to chill by the fire with a movie and more drinks. Of course afternoon tea will be available mid to late afternoon especially for after your leisurely coastal walks. Saturday evening will include a cocktail, followed by a 2 course meal with wine. Hygge Retreats

“My first Hygge Retreat was in Jan at Langland Cove Guest House and it was amazing! The location was fabulous, minutes walk to the beach and Tanya was a great host, we relaxed, ate delicious food and shared in lovely company. I would recommend for sure! Coastal calm and a chance to escape the hustle and bustle of real life.” Sarah Thompson “I went on a Hygge Retreat in January with Tanya. I didn’t know what to expect but went with an open mind... As soon as I arrived I ‘felt’ what Hygge was. It was a cosy togetherness, which was interesting as I didn’t know most of the group. There was an instant bonding with others while taking time for ourselves and being so well looked after by Tanya in a safe and comforting space. It was about ‘being’ and not about ‘doing’! I would thoroughly recommend this experience to anyone and I look forward to my next one.” Lesley Jones

It’s the best time of year to start getting your Hygge on- there’s nothing better than cosying up with the bad weather outside. So what’s the first thing you think of when you see the word Hygge? A hug right?! Us Welsh would describe it as ‘cwtchy’ in fact we should make it the Welsh version! When asked how to spell a certain emotion... ‘You don’t spell it-you feel it’. Hygge is all about the atmosphere. It’s about well-being and feeling comfortable. Think open fires, snuggly socks and

candles, being in places you love with people you love - no dramas or tension.

Happy Hygge

Summer is over and autumn is here again already.

So how do I Hygge at home? The first thing I think of is our comfy sofa with lots of cushions and a basket full of blankets for friends and family to use when it gets chilly - a very Hyggelig thing to have!! The right lighting is important-mood lighting and plenty of it!! I like to light candles and dim down the lights in the evening and you’ll find me relaxing in my favourite jumper and woolly socks with messy hair! I love to decorate my home with organic materials such as natural stone, reclaimed wood and brick. I like to use leather, metal and of course plenty of plants.

Happy Hygge xxx

My perfect Hygge evening is having friends over, sat outside on the sofas, around the fire, having a BBQ and catching up on life. So embrace the Autumn. For an instant bit of Hygge have a soak with your favourite book, meet a good friend for coffee and cake, buy some cushions and a lush blanket, get candles - LOTS OF CANDLES and just do what makes you happy. The language of tailoring has always been something that ignites me, I have proudly acquainted myself with the journey, the process and the art of the skill. There is a human tendency, maybe it is a survival tendency, to want to blend in with one another yet having the need to be seen. If you are seeing the view you are not in it and if you are in it you are not seeing.

When It comes to fashion, inspiration is everywhere, how can you not be influenced by words or images, when interacting with the other side of the world is just one click away? Although technology has its advantages it can have drawbacks. Being saturated by technology can leave you less inspired with all the online noise. I like to read, 19th century, or a touch later for instance Flaubert, Dickenson and Time. They focus on details, I particularly like it when they describe the colours and the materials, it is incredible. It would be fascinating if I could flash back to the past to experience their style first hand as opposed to through todays mediums. I think there is going to be a resurgence of

Style printed pages again, technology doesn’t take you on the same journey as holding a book and reading it. Instagram and the other social media platforms are paramount to the modern human and I benefit greatly from them by having a way to present my creations, however I understand it can be hypnotic. I am a visual person and I see suiting as a communication tool. A well tailored suit speaks, converses and resinates. I have started the day over 12,775 times, each day learning the skill of suit making. A lot of patience is required which has taught me to make the collaboration of sense of self, an empathy that makes me unique in the world of suit fashion. I am relatable to a degree and am willing to bare all as I forever will

be a student to this craft. As I said, I have started the day so many times because each day is a new opportunity to progress in all expressions of my entity. As a child the dexterity of a suit maker wasn’t apparent to me. My godfather was a master tailor, it is a blessing to reminisce of what now I see as the beginning of my story, to complete prior unpretentious tasks which are now primary endeavours is humbling. Today, despite my free will of design, I still harbour the excitement of instinct, when it comes to making suits for my clients. I make to what is in front of me, style is an art and so is suit making. It continues to be a great year, our Penarth

Revolutionising Storage in the Vale The Mason’s Self Storage story started back in the 1950’s when Eric Mason, rented out corrugated garages; by 1991, Masons had expanded onto the Priority

Just

Enterprise Park trading estate as Gordon Mason, Managing Director, stumbled across the concept of self-storage, popular in America, but virtually unknown in the UK. With his fellow directors, Brett & Richard Mason, they seized the opportunity and added the self-storage concept to the already well known Masons Removals business. They named the new business: The Welsh Self Storage Centre. As times changed Masons listened to it’s customers and the general public in the Vale of Glamorgan, and knew it was time to develop something that answered todays changing customers needs. In 2016, after considerable investment, the new state-of-the-art facility that utilizes high end technology enabling 24/7 access was unveiled and re-branded Masons Self Storage. 22

lowri morgan Ultra Runner, TV Presenter, Sports JournalisT, Adventurer & MOTIVATIONAL SPEAKER

Lowri Morgan a real Wonder Woman, please tell us about your career so far... I’ve been lucky enough to have travelled the world with my work as an adventurer, a TV presenter and also by entering and racing in the World’s toughest endurance races. Many have asked how I ended up going on these amazing adventures I believe my determination started at a very young age. I was spotted for my singing talent at the age of 8 years old, and after a few hard months of practice, I won the National Urdd Eisteddfod. That determination epitomised my attitude towards life. Three years later my running talent was spotted and with the same perseverance I went on to win National school honours in cross country. I was also a member of the National Youth Choir of Wales and the National Youth Orchestra of Wales. When I was growing up, I always wanted to be a classical singer. Singing is what I had trained to do. However, adventure and sport was always a

The Power by Naomi Alderman - Alderman presents the reader with a world where men are the weaker sex. Suddenly, teenage girls start developing extraordinary powers, and through various narratives we see how this changes everything. A modern dystopia, framed as a thriller, with feminism at its roots. Really, what more could you ask for? Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? by Phillip K. Dick - This is the book that inspired the film Blade Runner. Set in a post-apocalyptic San Francisco, the plot follows a bounty-hunter, hired to destroy escaped androids, whose only difference to the remaining humans is that they can’t feel empathy. Alias Grace by Margaret Atwood - Historical fiction about Grace Marks, said to have committed infamous murders in Canada in the 19th century, from the author of The Handmaid’s Tale. The plot follows the accused after her trial, telling the story from the contrasting perspectives of a fictional doctor and the mildmannered Grace. Penarth author Jon Lawrence wrote the book in part as a way of dealing with his own personal losses. Lawrence was moved to write the novel — which features a memorable twist in the tale — after struggling with losses in his own life, including the death of a close friend in the 9/11 terrorist attack; his wife’s miscarriage and the passing of his mother. He says that grief and love are “two sides of the same emotion and cannot be divided”, but while grief, like love, never really fades, it can be dealt with through building new connections. His thoughtful examination of the grieving process has touched readers across the UK, with one widow who had kept hold of her husband’s belongings for a decade after his death feeling comforted enough to donate them to a charity shop in order to move on with her life. The Jack Newton Radio, by Jon Lawrence,

is available now priced £6.99 in paperback and £2.50 in Kindle Edition. Visit www.jonlawrence.org
