Hello...

Wow is 2016 really nearly over? I can’t believe where the year

Penarth View www.penarthview.co.uk tanya@penarthview.co.uk 07817628442

has gone never mind the fact that this is our 25th issue. It

@PenarthView

has been a wonderful few months looking back over the past

issues and in particularly going through the first ever issue that Nigel Dudley published over five years ago. I have enjoyed editing Penarth View since issue 16 and it’s certainly a passion of mine. I dearly hope there are another 25 issues ahead of me and I continue to produce an interesting lifestyle magazine for the residents and businesses of Penarth.

Editor: Tanya Lynch Design: nicjonesdesign Photography: Tanya Lynch, Tunde Katona Photography Contributors: Sarah Thompson, Charlotte Morgan, Dyffri Owen, Claire Rees, Carolyn Spiller, Ollie Hides Our next issue will be out in March 2017 Whilst every effort is made to achieve accuracy, Penarth View is not responsible for any errors or omissions.

In this issue the Penarth View team have been busy meeting up with local residents and businesses across town. Regular columnist Charlotte Morgan keeps us up to date with events throughout Winter in our What’s On Guide on page22. Our local sports reporter Dyfri Owen thoroughly enjoyed interviewing Olympic Gold Medalist Hannah Mills on page 40. Plus Sarah Thompson tells us about the latest trend called Hygge pronounced Hoo-Ga and whether Penarth is Hygge friendly on page 24. I hope you enjoy our Winter issue and wish you a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. As always a huge thanks to our local businesses and of course you our readers for supporting Penarth View. Be sure to contact us if you have any news or events you would like us to promote in our Spring issue due out end of February.

Dare I say it... 2016 is almost over and for some of us it only feels like yesterday that we were making plans for the year ahead. I certainly feel this way and even more so now that I am editing the 25th issue of Penarth View. I can’t quite believe that the Winter/Christmas issue will be the 25th issue.

Time flies when you’re having fun 4

Penarth View

As a creative it has been an honour to work with the Penarth View team and develop the publication into what it is today. I feel Penarth View has become a truly forward-thinking publication and one that has heritage. It’s still standing strong in the fast paced digital era we live in. I have invited both local residents and businesses to express their thoughts about the publication and say thanks to the lovely Nigel Dudley who launched and edited Penarth View from issue 1-15. The 25th Penarth View has to be my ultimate happy issue and I hope you enjoy reading the following wonderful comments... < Team from Tony’s taste of italy

25th Issue Keri hutchings - Penarth Town Council

“We’ve supported Penarth View and have appeared in almost every issue since it launched in 2011, which coincided with me starting in the business. It gives us a great opportunity to put our properties and thoughts on the market in front of Penarth residents, and we love the work and dedication that Tanya and the team put in time after time.” Richard Baker - David Baker & Co “We have been in every issue from the start, in our 25th year of trading our local Penarth View magazine is an integral part of our local advertising.“ Sarah Cuffin - Smile Studio

Nigel dudley - former editor

“I look forward to the new edition of Penarth View! It’s compact style and presentation is really eye catching, makes for an easy read and the contents are amazing. It’s informative and enjoyable and I have discovered more about the area in which I live than ever before! The way it’s presented is vibrant and somehow makes me feel more buoyant. Long may Penarth View be part of our lives!” Mrs Morgan - Penarth Marina Resident “Penarth View is a brilliant publication which brings together and promotes the talented local and independent businesses in Penarth. It brings a modern approach with interesting features and is a real asset to our local community.” John Bruno Total Training

Chris cronin - Penarth Tyres

“It is always a pleasure to read my Penarth View, especially when I get an hour to myself to take time out. I particularly love the features especially Penarth People Uncovered and I like to check the What’s On Guide for local events. Just a lovely publication and Tanya is so committed to promoting Penarth in all its glory.” Louise Jones - Penarth Resident “Puravida has been featured in the Penarth View since it first began, and it’s been great to see the quality and content of the free publication grow! It’s amazing how many people enjoy looking through the local features and news, not to mention how many people have found our shop thanks to reading about it here in print!” Jim & the Puravida Team Penarth View

Keeping it local this Winter Celebrating all that’s local in Penarth is at the heart of a recent independent Shop Local campaign – and there’s plenty to celebrate. All through the year, our community is busy producing great food and drink, making the most of our coastline and local parks. We get involved in events such as Picnic Penarth and our annual carnival, as well as visiting our markets and hosting music and literature events that everyone can enjoy. None of this would be possible without local shops, businesses and the town council, community groups and residents putting the ‘local’ into their lives and making ‘local’ an even better place. So, this Christmas, let’s make sure we get the Shop Local habit. 8

A better shopping experience. A unique experience. Staff give you time. A friendly and familiar environment. Specialist goodies such as sugar free, gluten free, vegan or vegetarian.

Mel owner at Umpa Lumpa Sweet Shop said: “Customers come into our shop and feast their eyes on a world of candy that brings back memories of their childhood. Our young customers begin to create memories for themselves as they grow up. We are a focal part of the community helping customers by phoning for a taxi, delivering goods, recommending a good florist etc or just lending an ear. Collaboration is important to our business and we have worked with Griffin Books, Windsor Fruit store and Dotty Pots to name but a few.”

Penarth resident, Laura Francis said: “The local shopping in Penarth is definitely one of the top three reasons why I love living here so much. There is such a feeling of community here and I am a big advocate of shopping locally and supporting independent traders. Whether you are after a steak for dinner, a gift for someone special or a bargain from the charity shop, Penarth has it all and much more.”

Sarah from Smile Studio Another local business who has just celebrated their 25th year in business shared with us.... Why did you start the business in Penarth 13 years ago? I was looking to settle down with my young family having moved to Cardiff in 2000 to work at Boots Dental care in Queens street. I was smitten by the character of the town and its close & very welcoming community. Refresh has now been open 5 years. What does it have to offer the community? No need to travel to Harley street, we’ve brought 10 years younger to Penarth! Laser treatments including skin rejuvenation, acne & rosacea. Botox, fillers and the latest PDO thread lifting all help the locals look naturally refreshed and readily push back those years.

Shop Local

Some quotes from our local residents as to why they shop here in Penarth...

What is new for 2017? Welcoming Amy Woolley to our dental team, a Penarth girl who joined us originally on work experience from Stanwell School 12 years ago! Thread lifting (mini facelift) the latest addition to our portfolio of treatments in Refresh and a facelift of a different kind for our reception. Where are your favourite gems in Penarth? I love being able to sneak down via the dolly steps just along from SmileStudio for a breath of sea air along the pier and seafront! It’s like a secret passage to a most beautiful sea view. Also enjoying the delicious local baked GI bread with a homemade soup at one of our lovely array cafes including Waterloo Tea Rooms. What do you love most about Christmas in our local town? Hamptons, I used to love taking our children there when they were younger for a magical breakfast with Santa Claus. They decorate the store beautifully and I am delighted that they’ve been involved with the town this year. Loving the new lights and trio of Christmas trees adorning the clock roundabout this year!

With Christmas around the corner, it

may be too late to embark on an open plan kitchen renovation for this years’ festive season. But kitchens aren’t just for Christmas and now is a great time to start your renovation planning process for 2017. A stunning open plan kitchen space should be versatile enough for you to enjoy intimate family occasions as well as sizeable celebrations like Christmas, New Year and your next birthday bash. When I work on a kitchen for my clients I like to consider every eventuality. If the idea is to go open plan, I need to examine the different zones of the room and how best to design the way they flow and function, as well as the way they look and feel. There’s no point having an open plan kitchen that doesn’t fit your lifestyle.

Once upon a time the kitchen was simply the room where you cook food. You went in, cooked a meal and left. That’s not how it’s done anymore. Cooking a family meal has become a household experience. It brings people together to enjoy the moment, the smells and the taste. It’s at times like these that the family kitchen needs to feel cosy whilst offering enough functional space to prepare dinner

without feeling cramped. Believe it or not, I’ve seen open plan kitchen renovations that reduced the functional space. This is not the ideal outcome and your kitchen designer and architect should work together to ensure you get the very best result.

room wall or extend outward, it’s worth asking a qualified and experienced designer to visualise the space and demonstrate all of the possibilities you have at your disposal. The options could leave you feeling overwhelmed, that’s why you need to work with experts who have a proven track record in great kitchen renovations to guide the process. Choose carefully, make sure anyone you have working on your house comes highly recommended and offers the right qualifications. Once you have the right team in place you can expect a home transformation that’s perfect for every special occasion all year round.

If large social gatherings are your thing, you’re going to need the space that only an open plan design will bring. There are ways to get more out of a small kitchen by maximising storage and using integrated combination appliances. But you’ll never disguise the fact that you have a small room that will fill up faster than a bin bag on Christmas Day. The large dining table, kitchen island and a selection of useful appliances all need plenty of space and if that’s your dream, an open plan kitchen is a must. If the time has come to take down that dining

HRH The Earl of Wessex visits Cardiff Bay & jumps aboard Challenge Wales As part of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE) Diamond Anniversary celebrations, HRH Prince Edward The Earl of Wessex, visited Cardiff Bay and Challenge Wales welcomed the Royal visitor onboard for a short voyage. Challenge Wales undertakes residential voyages as part of a Gold DofE programme, as part of the Royal visit, The Earl donned life jacket and deck shoes and jumped aboard. Before setting sail, The Earl was personally introduced to some of the Challenge Wales volunteers and team before he was escorted by 8 young DofE participants, aged 17 – 23, who would be helping to crew the boat, many of whom had sailed on Challenge Wales at some point during the summer.

Andy Hall, Skipper said: “It was great to showcase Challenge Wales’ youth work and what we do as part of the DofE programme by having The Earl onboard. For the young people who helped crew Challenge Wales across the Bay it was certainly a day with a difference and none of them had ever imagined when they sailed with us for their DofE Gold Residential that their next voyage with Challenge Wales would be with a member of the Royal family!” The Earl chatted to the young people about their Challenge Wales sail training adventures during the voyage from Mermaid Quay, before disembarking at Cardiff International White Water centre. Challenge Wales is a 72-foot round-the-world yacht that sailed twice around the world and is now based in Penarth, as Wales’ largest sail training vessel and Wales’ Tall Ship. Sail training activities onboard Challenge Wales help young people aged 12 - 25 years develop social and personal skills, to improve their employment prospects, in a challenging and positive environment. Those onboard get involved in all aspects of sailing the boat, from helming and navigating, hoisting the sails to preparing meals and no sailing experience is required to take part. cHallenge wales 02920 704657 www.challengewales.org reservations@challengewales.org @ChallengeWales

lets get

hyg g e with it By Sarah Thompson

Hygge pronounced ‘Hoo-gah’ is a Danish concept and way of life encompassing the good things in life. It’s about cosiness, an atmosphere and an experience rather than about things, it’s about togetherness, being with those we love and sharing with them. It can also be about being on your own tucked up under a blanket with a good book and a steaming cup of hot chocolate in your favourite mug.

• • •

• The origin of Hygge The original word in Norwegian means ‘wellbeing’. However ‘hygge’ might originate from the word ‘hug’. ‘Hug’ comes from the 1560s word hugge, which means ‘to embrace’. Other suggestions of origin are from Old Norse hygga – ‘to comfort’ and hugr ‘’mood’. Why is it on trend? We all lead such hectic lives these days cramming in work, family, social plans, exercise and everything in between. Hygge is a chance to escape, step away from the technology, relax and get back to the simple things in life. Hygge is also about connecting with nature and the outside world, walking and enjoying your local park, coast or countryside are all things that are great for your health and mental

wellbeing and we are spilt for choice with the beautiful locations that surround Penarth and the Vale.

Holm House for a real fire and cosy sofas Ocho for comfort food with friends Penarth Pavilion for staying warm and watching the stormy weather outside the windows The Common @Waterloo Tea are offering a new event on Friday and Saturday evenings to chill, catch up, wind down with friends Enjoy a walk in Alexandra Gardens, kicking autumn leaves about with your friends and family

Where can you shop Hygge? How to get your Hygge? Hygge is easily found, it could be a night with friends, sharing home cooked food and playing board games or chatting. Hygge doesn’t have to stop at home, it can also be adopted at work, consider your office lighting, can you add a lamp to your desk to create hygge? The working ethos of the Danes is something to envy, its frowned upon to arrange a meeting after 4pm as this is considered as personal time, you won’t find many workers behind their desks, they are with their families, socializing or exercising. Weekend work is rare - no wonder Denmark is considered to be one of the happiest places to live.

Sugar & spice and all things nice?! By Tanya Lynch

I’m addicted to sugar! I’m not sure for how long but it has been the case for far too many years and now I am ready to give it up. Maybe you feel the same and have tried on numerous occasions to reduce your intake of sugar. It’s the most affordable and easily available bad substance on the market and sugar is hidden in the majority of foods we buy on a daily basis.

Carolyn Spiller

As a mother of two I am not sure how I am supposed to feel about sugar. If I believe the anti-sugar lobby, it’s “the new tobacco”.

Sugar rather than fat, the argument goes, is responsible for ever-rising levels of obesity. The more sugar you eat or drink, the more the body stores it as fat. Hence the links to obesity. But what is emerging is just how much of what we eat is stuffed with “hidden” sugar, not just in fizzy drinks and doughnuts, but sauces, cereals, fruit juices, even fruit itself. To try and understand the nutritional facts, learn about how much sugar is included in our diet and the effects it has on us and our children, I

have considered going cold turkey! If I cut out sugar, would I feel better? How much hidden sugar is really in my children’s diet? And how much of life without sugar can I tolerate? The cold turkey idea failed big time so I appraoched my good friend Carolyn Spiller who is an expert Hypnotherapist. Really? Could hypnotherapy help control my sugar addiction? After 6 sessions with Carolyn I have learnt why I reach for sugar and what the triggers are. I am now able to make logical decisions about whether I should or shouldn’t have a slice of cake with my morning coffee. I have clearly understood that I actually don’t wish to remove all sugars from my diet but I am more focused on removing refined sugars out of my menu and not let the sweet tooth control me at my weakest or tired moments. After all a good life is

As a Clinical Hypnotherapist, I work with individuals who want to have more control over their eating habits and enjoy a healthier, happier life. Through Solution Focused Hypnotherapy I help clients to address the underlying reasons for their eating habits and to transform their relationship with food. Factors such as stress, anxiety, low mood or poor sleep patterns, for instance, are highly influential to our dietary choices, increasing the desire for foods which are high in sugar and fat. These “hyper-palatable foods are known to trigger our reward systems by boosting dopamine levels much as addictive drugs do”, (New Scientist, 1 February 2014). There is growing evidence linking the consumption of a diet high in sugar with increased risk of obesity, type 2 diabetes and heart disease. Experts predict that more than half of all UK boys and 70 per cent of girls will be overweight or obese within a generation, (Independent, 7 April 2016). Penarth View

Did they like it? Richard did because he is quite sporty but Nick isn’t really and he capsized his boat and after that he hated it! So did you go back there the year after? Absolutely and I was introduced to sailing when I was 8 years old and I absolutely loved it. I liked it so much that when we came back to South Wales I joined the sailing Club on Llanishen reservoir. They were all so welcoming and there were loads of beginners courses. You didn’t even need your own boat as you could use the clubs boats. So I continued to go there every Tuesday night and I made loads of friends just messing around on the water really.

My Grandparents have lived in Dinas Powys for ages. We used to live in St Fagan’s but we moved to Dinas Powys when I was 10. Where did you go to school? I went to Howells. I was a really sporty kid and because I was good at most sports like tennis, hockey, lacrosse and netball Howells gave me a scholarship.

40

Penarth View

How did you get into sailing? Did you come from a sailing family? No not at all and I think it is really nice that none of my family sail at all and that I haven’t kind of been born into it. When I was little, we used to go on our summer holidays to St Agnes in Cornwall every year. When I was 7, my 2 older brothers Nick and Richard who would have been 9 and 12 went on a sailing course down there. I was really annoyed that I couldn’t do it with them but you had to be at least 8 years old.

When did you start actually racing? That was probably after only about 8 months and it turned out that I was quite good at it and seemed to have some natural talent. I was still only 9 and under 16’s sail a single handed boat in the Optimist Class. We are really lucky in Wales because there are a certain amount of boats that can be lent to people and I got one of those boats so that I could train and race. I am really, really competitive and so I loved the racing and soon afterwards went along to the Welsh sailing squad trials. Were you still able to do the other sports you were good at? Not so much really. I liked tennis and I was a member of Cardiff LTC but I was getting sore knees so I was doing less and less of that and more and more sailing. It’s a good

Lifestyle

job really because I am only little so I don’t think I would have made it as a tennis player. And so you started making waves in the world of sailing if you pardon the pun!! Yes I was doing very well. When I was 14, I finished with the best result ever in the World Championship from a young British sailor in the Optimist class. It was also really unusual for a girl to finish higher than her male peers. This result was made up from your finishing position in 10 races. Did the fact that you were doing so well with sailing affect your academic studies? No not at all. I was really competitive with everything so I wanted to do really well at school too. So I know that you made it into GB squad for the London 2012 Olympics and you got Sliver didn’t you. Were you happy with that? No. I was absolutely devastated. Going in to the last race we were level on points with the Kiwi boat in joint top and we were guaranteed at least a sliver. We obviously really wanted the Gold though and therefore we just needed to finish ahead of them to get the Gold. Things were going well too and we were ahead at the start. However, we didn’t have the experience then and we made a mistake and the wind changed and we finished 2nd. As I said we were devastated and I don’t think I will ever truly get over it.

That must have spurred you on to get Gold in Rio though didn’t it? Not initially. I was quite low for a while and I did contemplate finishing. It took a whole year us to decide to go for it in Rio. One week I would be definitely up for it but Saskia wouldn’t be and the next week she would want to and I wouldn’t! It was such a huge decision and a massive commitment. You have to put everything on the line and after all the effort you might still not get that Gold. We decided to commit to it and we had 3 whole years of preparation for Rio. We had only had about 18 months together before London and it proved to be a real whirlwind. We were more experienced and we trained to address our weaknesses in 2012 and we felt that the Rio sailing course and conditions would suit us better than London. We are quite a small pairing. In London the sailing took place in

a notoriously windy location which favoured the heavier sailors. Conversely Rio would be less windy and it would therefore favour our all round sailing ability. We qualified for the Rio Olympics in September 2015. I know you won Gold in Rio because you have got the medal with you and I’ve held it and it’s really heavy but talk me through that competition. It hadn’t all gone perfectly. In one of our races we capsized our boat whilst in the lead but our experience and ability to work as a team and mutual trust and respect allowed us to rectify the situation without falling out with each other and we finished 6th. Going in to the final race we were ahead and in fact we had all but won the Gold medal already. Once again the Kiwi boat was our nearest competition but this time we only had to finish the race and avoid disqualification in order to win Gold. Penarth View

41

Did you go for it in the last race? Absolutely not! We used all our experience and took it easy cruising around at the back, staying out of trouble! This wasn’t only to ensure we got the Gold though. We also didn’t want to get caught up in a really tight silver / bronze battle in that final race and we didn’t want to influence the outcome of that in any way. What was your overriding emotion when you won that gold medal? It was definitely relief! What is it that makes you so much better than your opposition? There are lots of different elements that make up a good sailor. You have to be able to make the boat go fast. To do this you have to have a good feel for the wind, you need mental resilience and you have to understand the concept of risk and reward.

42

Penarth View

What do you mean by that? You might split away from the rest of the boats to find better wind. It’s like a game of chess. If it comes off it can give you a big lead but if it doesn’t you can struggle. If things are going pretty well we would tend to take fewer risks. You really need mental resilience because the medal will be decided over 5 or 6 days and you have 2-3 races a day. If things don’t go well in a race you have to be able to recover quickly without dwelling on the previous race. So are you going for Gold again in Tokyo? Yes. The thing which is inspiring me this time is that if I win Gold again I will be the most successful British female sailor in Olympic history. Saskia has retired though. Who chooses another partner for you then? I do. It is the athletes decision not the coaches. I’m also thinking about changing class though. Why would you do that? Surely you would have a better chance of winning Gold again by sticking with the 470 class. You’re right I would. However, there is a question over whether the 470 class will be part of the Olympics in Tokyo. I’m therefore thinking about moving up to the 49FX which is bigger and faster and it would be a new challenge. What will you do after you have finished sailing? I’m actually going to try a little bit of work experience soon to see what I like doing. I’m going to do a month’s work experience

with a sailing, shooting, equestrian and lifestyle clothing company called Musto and then I’m going to do a month with an accountancy firm in Poole. Two years of the degree taught me that engineering wasn’t for me. It’s a good time now for me to experience some of what life has to offer outside of sailing. I know you live in Weymouth at the moment because that is where British sailing is based but what do you most like about this area? I love Penarth Marina and I really like Pier64 and I love to take Molly my black Labrador for walks on Sully Island. Obviously, John Bruno is here with us having a chat. How do you know John? John used to train my mum and my mum mentioned to John that I could do with some help. I was only about 11 and I was really light and I needed to improve my upper body strength and my core stability and so we started to do some training together. (John): That’s right. I can remember coming round to your house when you were that age and I asked you what your goal was and you answered without hesitation and with a glint in your eye that you wanted to sail at the Olympics. You also asked me how many press ups I could do in a minute and you said that you would be able to do more than me! Thank you ever so much for having this chat with me for Penarth View and I wish you all the very best in your quest for Gold in Tokyo.

Business Life Recently the owners from Glass By Design invited me over for a glass art workshop. I wondered if this was something I could master and indeed an interesting request for me, a person who can never sit still! Cathy & Angelina who own and run Glass By Design produce fabulous glass art alongside exhibiting a delightful range of likeminded artists from all over the UK as well as hosting unique and fun workshops in their local studio on Station Approach. With a flair for contemporary style and design, honed over many years they create one-off bespoke pieces that will then be developed into amazing glass art. Working in their shared studio/shop in a shared way has always been a

principle feature of how they interact with their customers. They both value using local materials and working with fellow crafts people to create cherishable pieces that pay homage to the past, galvanise the best of the present and pave a sustainable way to the future. It was a real pleasure to spend a few hours learning specialised glass making skills. I was in my element working on my glass coaster and Christmas glass decoration and both Angelina and Cath have a great sense of humour making the session real fun. The whole ethos behind these workshops was indeed to take your time, be present in the moment and let your creative flair blossom. I loved it!

I would highly recommend booking a glass workshop and at this time of year your glass art work would make an equisite Christmas gift for your family and friends. In a fast paced world where we don’t seem to have the time to engage with each other or get to know our neighbours or our local businesses one day we could lose our local identity. This is why Lynchpin Media Wales and Jim Rich Films have collaborated to produce one minute films about the local town, the independent businesses and community events.

Hi I am Jin - Last year I was diagnosed with a rare autoimmune disease called vasculitis G.P. which almost cost me my life. I have fought my way back to health with the help of the amazing therapists and fitness classes down The Now. We hope these little one minute films will help you showcase your business, your event or your charity through a vey upbeat and thoughtfully produced mini film. For further information please contact Tanya at info@lynchpinmediawales.co.uk.

Ross and Stewart at SR Motors would like to thank their loyal and growing customer base in Penarth for another successful year. From the outset we have put emphasis on offering quality vehicles and preparing them to a high standard, offering a relaxed no pressure environment in which to discuss customers wants and needs in their next vehicle, and then after purchasing from us, offering our ongoing support and advice through the period of ownership. We feel that following this mantra is crucial in building a happy and loyal customer network. 58

We are always delighted to receive complimentary words from our customers. Here are just two examples from our Facebook page and website. Ryan Pratt who bought his second Volvo from us in August this year: ‘This is my second car I have bought from Ross and Stewart, they are very knowledgeable, took the time to listen to what I was looking for in a car and found me exactly what I was after, the car was everything I expected it to be and not only that I bought it at a very fair price. Great people to do business with and right on the doorstep in Penarth.’

Ian Schroeter who bought a converted VW Transporter from us in October: ‘I have recently purchased a VW Transporter from SR Motors. I received an interested, friendly and personal service, far superior to that of a main dealer! I would not hesitate to recommend to family and friends. First class!!’

We would like to wish everyone a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy and Healthy 2017!!

Pe nar t h Peo p l e Un c ove r e d Favourite past time: The one I give most of my time to is walking. I have a 6 year old working cocker spaniel called Emmy who needs a lot of walking – or outings as we call them. You can’t say walk in our house without her rushing to the front door. I spend hours each day walking around Penarth, usually along the clifftops, often to Lavernock point and then back through Cosmeston. We are so lucky to live where we do.

Oliver Hides Age: 46 Occupation: Broadcaster First claim to fame: I expect I caused quite a stir when I fell into a fairground ride in New Quay when I was very small. I have vague memories of the machinery being dismantled to get me out of it and I haven’t been near a fairground ride since. After that I managed to pass through life with little excitement until a fleeting appearance as an extra in Goodbye Mr Chips with Roy Marsden when I was in my teens. 66

Penarth View

What can’t you live without? Emmy, of course and my walking boots. I get through about 2 pairs a year and I can’t walk anywhere without them. When you’ve got a spaniel you can never be sure quite what you’ll be walking through but it’s often water or mud. You can’t do that in your best brogues. Biggest temptation: A quiet pint - usually in the Albion. It’s a rare event in the week as I have to be up so early but there’s nothing better than a quick beer and a chat at the bar to find out what’s going on in the town.

Best life moment? I’ve had so many fantastic opportunities through my job. The London Olympics stands out – that was amazing but I will never forget being on Downing Street on the evening in May 2010 that Gordon Brown left Number 10 and David Cameron arrived. I had been in London since the previous Thursday initially reporting on the result of the General Election and then the negotiations to form a government. I was in the BBC offices opposite the Houses of Parliament on the Tuesday afternoon when news came through that a deal had been done between the Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats and so we scrambled up Whitehall to Number 10 just in time to get on air and I saw it all unfold in front of me.

Social Life

What would a typical day in your life involve? I’m up very early in the morning. The alarm goes off at 4.15 and I’m usually on my way to work by 5. After a team meeting and a look through the interviews that I’ll have to do I’m then on air from 6.30 until 9. I love my job. It’s a real privilege to be the first voice that some people hear each day and to try to set the tone for what’s to come.

The morning can throw anything at me – it could be the Prime Minister or the First Minister, it could be a celebrity or a sports star or my favourites – ordinary people with an extraordinary tale to tell. Come 9 o clock I’m usually pretty shattered but also strangely energised so it’s home and out with Emmy before returning to the news in the papers, the radio and television and thinking about the next day. I can honestly say that an hour doesn’t pass without me looking at the latest news in some form. I love to cook so I’ll spend a couple of hours in the kitchen preparing dinner and then after a bit of TV it’s off to bed with a book between 8.30 and 9 and I’ll be fast asleep by 10.

What do you love most about the Penarth? The sea and the parks make the shortlist but it’s definitely the people. I’ve lived here for 10 years and I found people to be so warm and friendly. I’ve made some of the best friends I’ve ever had just by chatting in the pub. It’s lovely how people don’t care who someone is, what they do or what car they drive, they just take them at face value. That’s very different to some of the other places I’ve lived but it seems that once you cross the lights at Baron’s Court everyone is equal and you can be yourself. How has Penarth changed over the years? It’s changed of course even in the 10 years that I’ve been living here. The arrival of Bar 44 seemed

to set the tone for an upgrading of the food offer and places like Mint and Mustard and The Pilot that have followed have really made a difference. What I really love about Penarth though are the bits that haven’t changed – it still has the original charm and atmosphere that drew me here. Favourite gems of Penarth? The new arrivals in Penarth get a lot of attention and many of them are fantastic but I still love the older businesses. Wason’s, Spencer’s, Lush the butchers, Windsor Fruit Stores. We’re so lucky to have such a thriving high street and these are the same businesses that drew me to Penarth in the first place. I’ve always said you can buy just about anything in Penarth unless you’re looking for a kipper. Penarth View
