[Tips for December]

Five study tips for you to share with students to successfully prepare them for final exams: 1. Create an environment conducive to studying. Students sometimes think a corner cafe or their bed is a great place to study. It needs to be somewhere free of distractions, well lit and ample space to spread out books and notes. 2. Procrastination won’t help. Students often think cramming for a final is the best way to study, but cramming is useless as a stand-alone strategy. Students need to prepare 7 to 10 days before the exam, especially when preparing for multiple exams. 3. Everyone has a different learning style. Auditory learners must utilize audio review tapes and group discussions. Visual learners must prepare charts, diagrams and outlines of the material. Tactile learners must seek out models, museums or laboratory environments to reinforce the materials. 4. Form a study group. Students should not pick their social buddies for this group; rather, choose a few conscientious students that rarely missed their class. Compare notes, quiz each other and keep one another on task. 5. Freshen up notes for the final. The notes students take in class are full of extraneous information which can distract them from the essence of the material. Now that they have the benefit of hindsight, they are able to process the course material as one cohesive unit. It would be helpful for the student to make an outline of each day's notes to achieve this understanding.
