[Tips for November]

This section contains hints and resources that will help you while mentoring students.

The semester is almost over and students may come to you worried and concerned about...you guessed it....grades. Here are some helpful ways to guide them in the right direction. 1. Change: There is still time to make a change! Advise them to set up an appointment with their professor to go over different ways they can improve their grade. 2. Stay on top of classwork: It is important for students to do their homework and read their chapters as soon as they get back from class when it is still fresh in their minds. Remind them that good note-taking is always a must for in class focus and studying for exams. 3. Procrastination is NOT an option: Encourage the student that procrastination only leads to poor work. Turn things in on time and start on an assignment when it is given. This will allow time for proof reading and good study habits. 4. Find an appropriate study location: Students needs to study somewhere they will not be distracted and can remain focused on the task at hand. Suggestions include an open classroom, study lounges, and the library. It is importatnt to minimize distractions from a computer or cell phone. Remember: Students that put in the effort to make better grades will only produce positive results!
