A Message from the Festival Chair

Kelly Dozier Festival Chair

Charles Tunnicliff Festival Co-Chair

The 2014 Chain of Parks Art Festival is dedicated to two exceptional women who we lost this year. Nella Schomburger, a friend to the Festival, as well as Goodwood Plantation, serving up her delicious food to our VIP’s each year with her gracious smile and southern hospitality, and Clifton Lewis, community activist and one of the four founders of LeMoyne Art Foundation. They shared their talents and energy with our community for many years and they will be sorely missed. Great appreciation goes out to our hard working, dedicated committee members and our festival volunteers who volunteer their time to make this festival successful each year; Lagran Saunders and Ben and David and Elizabeth Gwynn of Cypress Restaurant for catering our VIP lunches; the City of Tallahassee, Leon County and Downtown Improvement Authority for their support of the festival and our generous sponsors including Presenting Sponsor - Mad Dog Construction, Media Presenting Sponsor - Tallahassee Democrat; Artist Hospitality Host - Greater Tallahassee Chamber of Commerce; Beverage Tent Host – Aloft Hotel; Entertainment Stage Host – WCTV; Children’s Festival Host – Stearns Weaver and Banner Host Capital City Bank. Enjoy the Festival! Kelly S. Dozier, Festival Chair

Leslie Peebles was born in Hackensack, New Jersey in 1959, lived in the suburbs of New York City until 1971 when she and her family moved to Suwannee County, Florida where her father became a Broiler Chicken Producer for Gold Kist. Living on the 80 acre farm near the Suwannee River fostered a deep love, respect and fascination for nature. Leslie attended The University of the South in Sewanee Tennessee and received her B.A. in Studio Art from Newcomb College in New Orleans in 1981. Leslie moved to Gainesville in 1985 and received an M.A. in Art Education from U.F. in 1994. She taught Art for 17 years in Florida. Leslie has won numerous awards including First place from Coconut Grove, Tallahassee, Mount Dora, and the Morse Museum Award from Winter Park. She is currently represented by McIntyre Studios in Gainesville, High Tides Gallery in St. Augustine, Kate McFarland’s Gallery in Appalachicola, Clay and Paper Gallery in Dunedin, and Clyde Butcher’s Big Cypress Gallery. “I want others to see the ethereal and Eden-like beauty of the world around us as I see it. People read all visual form and project their feelings and experiences onto what they see. I deliberately infuse my images with connections and relationships. Gnarled forms reveal a triumphant history of struggle against the elements. Communities of individuals coexist in harmony and support each other’s survival. I want to inspire people to identify with and cherish life through meaningful imagery. I experience the landscape and all the life forms it nourishes and translate those experiences into drawings. The drawings are transferred to blocks of linoleum or wood. The slow, meditative process of carving distills and clarifies the images. I print their surfaces onto hand-made paper using a century old Charles Brand Etching Press and then watercolor directly into the prints.”

The Souvenir and Information Tent is located in Lewis Park, at the corner of Park Avenue and Calhoun Street near the food court.

The Festival Committee has increased the number of judges to a total of four, with two from outside the local area and two from our local universities. We are teaming an out of town judge with a local judge and each team will judge only specific artist mediums – about half for each team. All four judges will confer at the end of their selections to collectively determine the top two overall awards; Judges Choice and Best of Show. We want to thank all of our judges for taking the time to judge the artists in the LeMoyne Chain of Parks Art Festival.

Aja Roache Aja Roache, a native of Tallahassee, Florida, received her B.A. in Fine Arts from Florida A&M University, her M.A. from New York University in Interdisciplinary Studies, Humanities and Social Thought, and currently is working on her doctorate at the Florida State University’s Art Education Program, with a focus in Art Administration. Currently, Roache is an Assistant Professor at Florida A&M University in the Art Department teaching classes in Nonprofit Art Organizations and Curatorial Studies.

Her professional experience includes teaching, facilitating art exhibitions, and programs at the Florida A&M University FosterTanner Fine Arts Gallery. She has also worked with various nonprofit organizations including the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council in New York City, The Florida A&M University Black Archives, The 621 Gallery and currently serves as the Gallery Director at Florida A&M University’s Foster-Tanner Fine Arts Gallery. Aja’s primary interests include community enrichment initiatives in art spaces and art museum education.

Holly Keris Holly Keris is the Chief Curator at the Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens. She received undergraduate degrees in History and Humanities from Stetson University in DeLand, Florida, and a graduate degree in the History of Art from the University of Virginia. Prior to joining the staff at the Cummer in 2003, Holly worked at The Morse Museum of American Art in Winter Park, Florida, the Mennello Museum of American Art in Orlando, and for the City of Orlando’s Public Art Program.

She spent three years as Curator of Collections at the Museum of Arts and Sciences in Daytona Beach. Holly is an active community volunteer who serves on the City’s Art in Public Places Committee, is a trustee of the Memorial Park Association, and is a member of Leadership Jacksonville’s class of 2014.

Carolyn Henne Currently the Chair of the Department of Art at Florida State University as well as the Associate Dean for the College of Visual Arts, Theatre and Dance, Carolyn Henne is also a practicing artist in sculpture. Henne’s sculpture is largely informed by anatomical studies and ranges from large, complex interactive installations and performances to more straightforward, discrete objects. She is also the Director of the new Public Art and Architectural Art program, the Sculpture Head and the Interim Director for FSU’s Facility for Arts Research.

Henne was a faculty facilitator in VCU’s da Vinci center where a collaborative team worked with VCU surgeons to develop a prototype for a life-like surgical trainer, which is now being replicated and employed to train surgical students and shared at workshops internationally. She has a Courtesy Faculty Appointment with the Department of Medical Humanities in FSU’s College of Medicine.

Emma Thurgood Raised in the New England area, Emma Thurgood eventually found her way to Florida when she attended the Ringling College of Art and Design, where she received her BFA in painting. She then travelled to Memphis, TN to attend Memphis College of Art for her Master’s in studio art. Her knowledge extends to a variety of art making processes including painting/mixed media, photography, sculpture, craft, and fiber arts.

13

It was in Memphis that Emma worked her way into the behindthe-scenes life of the gallery and since then has devoted herself to a mission of presenting the young, the emerging and the under-represented artists and art forms to the community through her work as the Exhibitions Coordinator at Art Center Sarasota. She also works independently as an artist’s agent through her start-up business, Grey Aces Fine Art Agency, where she currently resides in Sarasota, FL.

2014 LeMoyne Chain of Parks Art Festival

Page here 2014 head Festival Emerging Artists The Festival Committee introduced a new approach to the emerging artist program for this year’s festival. The goal of these changes is to engage top talents emerging from local schools and provide them the real-life learning opportunity of presenting their art for sale in a fast paced, large audience arena. By limiting the number of emerging artists and including these artists in a section within the main professional artist booth areas, they will experience phenomenal exposure to festival visitors and gain valuable insight on how to sell their art. In the fall of 2013 a Festival liaison contacted representatives associated with art FAMU: Christina Darville, programs at each of the three local universities (FAMU, FSU and TCC) and requested Drawing & Graphics, Booth #4 their participation in the emerging artist program to garner at least 3 eligible art students who wished to participate in the Festival. As part of the real-life learning experience, the Selection Committee reviewed each schools’ online applications, selecting a single artist from each (TCC did not participate this year). The selected Emerging Artists are required to follow the same guidelines as the professional artists. As financial support to provide this opportunity to students, the Festival not only offers the exhibit space at no charge to each student but also provides each of the selected emerging artists with some basic equipment needed to exhibit at a festival. Creating and exhibiting enough art for a successful show is a lot of work for a FSU: Danny Doya, young artist and we hope you will stop by their booths to applaud their efforts.
