Dan Houston lives in Leicester Villas. Last year he created a new global sailing magazine ...

WEST HOVE

LOCAL PERSON - DAN HOUSTON Tell us more about your magazine... Classic Sailor is a new magazine dedicated to seamanship in seaworthy boats. Sailing, like every other aspect of life, has been inundated with technology in recent decades. Most of this is great: it has given us faster boats, stronger materials, pinpoint accuracy for navigation and some fantastic safety equipment – like a lifejacket which lets the mothership know where you are if you’ve been unlucky enough to fall overboard. However some of this can lead to a false sense of safety, because things can always go wrong at sea, and so we are all about the tried and tested ways of doing things, like using paper charts, being able to repair and look after your own boat and 5 improving knowledge generally. Naturally we have some of the geeky stuff too – we’re not living in a bubble in history. But it means we do cover older boats and boat design – wooden and GRP (glass-reinforced plastic), and these are a great way to get afloat. The secondhand market is quite saturated and so there are some great bargains to be had. I should say we’re trying to do it in an entertaining, as well as informative way, and we have some great writers who can really bring stories alive. How did your interest in sailing begin? I was taken sailing in my infancy, but I got a lot more interested through the Sea Cadets. Being on the water is being in a different world, where you are the stranger. And how you get on depends on your boat and your skill level. It sharpens your awareness of things. You often put your safety in the hands of your crewmates and perhaps you are less likely to take life for granted. That can be a good thing. Unlike other weight loss options, you’re

Just look at me now! never on your own with Cambridge Weight Plan. You'll have your own Cambridge Consultant who will support you through every step of your weight loss journey and explain the very real benefits of our flexible programmes.

What newspapers or magazines have you worked on in the past? I started on local newspapers in London and got into magazines in the late 1980s, starting on a hi-fi magazine. I was freelance for a few years and then joined Classic Boat magazine in 1998. I edited that for 15 years before leaving and starting the Classic Sailor.

What do you like about living in West Hove? When we first moved to West Hove I thought it was Devon; it felt a bit like that walking home from the pub. But now at last we have the Railway Inn! I like being close to the harbour and you can walk up to the Downs by Sainsbury’s and be on the South Downs Way in less than an hour. Is there anything about the area you would like to change? Right now I feel so lucky that we are not affected by flooding as has been happening elsewhere. I think we should count our blessings!

Agnie after You should always speak to your doctor before starting any weight loss programme.

News from local group KAWHRA...

DEVELOPERS PLAN SKY HIGH BLOCKS ON HOVE SEAFRONT Allowing the ‘Sackville Tower’ would be a defining moment for the future of West Hove, a precedent to be strongly resisted. KAWHRA welcomes the recently formed Hove Seafront Residents Association, a new strong voice for local residents. We attended their first meeting at a packed church hall in Portland Road which gave local people a chance to listen and have their say about the Sackville Tower. There was overwhelming opposition. Perhaps the i360 West Pier tower at 162 metres has 9 gone to developers’ heads. Hyde Housing are promoting Sackville Tower, without any ‘affordable housing’, 17 storeys high, a looming presence overshadowing all around it. The council may also be endorsing a new proposal of a similar size to the Gehry scheme at the King Alfred site. There is misleading loose talk in local media of a ‘Tall Building Corridor’ from the King Alfred to Boundary Road, using the problem of housing shortage to plea for inappropriately high developments. Building high is not essential to achieve high density housing. Europe

achieves it without massive towers. They would block sun, light and our pleasant maritime outlook, destroying the local streetscape’s open vista of well laid out roads and houses. We should resist suggestions that there is any justification for excessively high buildings all along the seafront, including the south side. Will we next see tower blocks promoted on Hove Lawns and Aldrington Basin? Last year, after years of consultation, the council approved detailed tests in the City Plan for any buildings proposed on Kingsway, east of Wish Road, higher than six storeys, to safeguard the seafront townscape and the amenities of neighbours. In 2013, again after extensive public consultation, the council approved the Aldrington Basin Development Brief. It stated that buildings on the south side of Kingsway alongside Shoreham Harbour should be no higher than the four-storey Vega flats opposite. The Sackville Tower will fail the policy tests that the council has approved after extensive public involvement. I am sure the planners won’t listen to developers’ hype and abandon their policies. That it was on the edge of the South Downs where I used to play for hours with my friends. There was a working arable farm there until the 1970s. Also, the famous windmill at West Blatchington, painted by John Constable, that is still there. There was a farm at Hangleton, that had a large bull in the yard, and a dew pond below the church that is now grassed over. We could also walk to the Devil’s Dyke along the disused Dyke Railway. that families often have and what can be the result when they are eventually discovered. Also, why it can sometimes be hard to tell the truth to someone. It is a coming of age story about Jenny the main character, who is adopted and knows the name of every capital city, but she doesn’t have all the answers to life’s problems. It highlights the change in society that occurred during that period especially with regards to adoption, unmarried mothers, marriage and divorce. It is also a love story, with a bitter twist at the end. Jenny is reunited by chance with her first love Martin, after the death of her parents. They begin a passionate affair and her life begins to unravel. Where are you living now? 11 Patcham in Brighton; but still bordering the Downs.

Have you got any more books planned? Yes, I hope to set the main part of my next novel in a nearby Sussex village. “Unwanted Truths” by Tricia Haddon is published by Troubadour priced £8.99. If you know of someone you think we should feature please let us know info@westhovedirectory.co.uk

Here is our monthly gardening feature written by Nareesa Sulaiman, a local garden designer...

WEST HOVE

IN THE GARDEN... JANUARY 2016 Over the years of working as a garden designer, I have often been asked what’s the difference between what I do and what a landscaper does. There are numerous outdoor specialists around Brighton and Hove so, to help you make an informed choice, here is a brief outline of the different roles that each of us takes responsibility for: Landscape architect oversees the planning, design and management of commercial landscape projects, such as the renovation of New Road in Brighton. They will have an in-depth understanding of planning laws and regulations as well as environmental legal requirements and 13 implications. Garden designer consults, designs and presents plans for domestic gardens. They have an in-depth understanding of design principles, the aesthetics of different landscaping materials and plant characteristics. They are able to create detailed 2D and 3D designs, perspective and construction drawings as well as suggest appropriate materials and plants to complete the design. Once the design has been agreed, the designer will create a specification detailing all aspects of the garden build. Some

garden designers will also project-manage construction of the garden. Landscape surveyor will carry out the survey of an outdoor space which is then used by the landscape architect or garden designer. If the site is reasonably straightforward, a garden designer or Design and Build company may carry out their own survey. Landscaper/landscape contractor will carry out the work to build the garden. It is not necessary to use a designer for the garden if you already know what you want, where you want it and what you would like it built from. Many landscapers will be happy to advise you on landscaping materials and some will make suggestions on other ways to improve the garden. When working with a designer, the landscaper will use the design plans and specifications for building the garden. Design and Build companies offer the complete package from designing through to building of the garden. They are often a cost effective solution as they may offer lower design costs than if you employ an independent garden designer. An occasional disadvantage is that some firms offer a limited number of designs or they recommend materials that they are happy working with rather than those which work best for the design. Feature plant for January Galanthus nivalis The arrival of the first snowdrops heralds for many of us the first sign of spring. Happy New Year! Nareesa

EXOTIC CREATURES EXHIBITION AT THE ROYAL PAVILION This exhibition is on in the Prince Regent Gallery of the Royal Pavilion until 28th February. It explores animals in royal collections, menageries and early zoos, and political beasts in the period 1750 to 1850. You can discover the fascinating story of the first living giraffe in the UK, given to George IV as a diplomatic gift in 1827 by Mohammed Ali, the viceroy of Egypt. King George IV was fascinated by anything exotic and expensive. According to Exotic Creatures curator Alexandra Loske, “The giraffe suffered badly from the injuries sustained on the long journey from deepest Africa to Wind15 sor, was perhaps given an inappropriate diet, and died in the autumn of 1829. Many satirical prints tell the story of her demise, clearly associating her with the much ridiculed king.” Many other items depicting giraffes or giraffe-like patterns were produced around this time, including candlesticks, fabrics, ceramics and wallpaper. The exhibition will cover the opening of London Zoo in 1828 as a collection for scientific study, plus the history of travelling menageries performing in London and Brighton. It will feature some of the animals who have lived in royal residences, including the Tower of London, s w ce No Pla ble a il va

The View From The ‘Saving St Leonard’s’ Group

WHAT IS HAPPENING WITH ST LEONARD’S CHURCH?

19

Thousands of local people will remember signing a petition in the summer of 2014, asking the Diocese of Chichester to keep St Leonard’s Church open. Now, at last, the diocese has decided to move the case on and ask the Church Commissioners whether they think St Leonard’s should stay open. The Church Commissioners are the people who make such decisions for the Anglican Church and they will probably decide the case sometime early in 2016. ‘Saving St Leonard’s’ welcomes the fact that finally, ten years after this closure was first discussed, the matter will at last be resolved, one way or another. A report, looking into various aspects of St Leonard’s, was prepared by the Church Buildings Council in December for the Church Commissioners. This report covers all sorts of details about the church, including whether

it is feasible for it to stay open, so we know that the considerations of the Church Commissioners will be thorough and fair, which is all we ask for. The Church Commissioners will then invite people to make comments on the plans for closure. They will probably put a notice in the Argus and will place notices outside the church. On these notices, people will find the address of the Church Commissioners - so if you want to write letters, or emails, giving your opinions, you will be able to do so. Naturally, ‘Saving St Leonard’s’ will also be making comments and we shall attend the Church Commissioners whenever they decide to discuss the closure to give our viewpoint. Should you want to know more about our views - as if they aren’t obvious - please visit Facebook at Saving St Leonard’s or email savingstleonards1@gmail.com.

News from The West Hove Forum...

NEWS FROM THE WEST HOVE FORUM St Leonard’s Church - At our last meeting, Rev Stephen Terry updated the West Hove Forum on the possible closure of St Leonard’s Church as a place of worship. He said that papers would shortly be presented to the church commissioners and a further consultation would follow. In the meantime the church council are committed to a “space project”. St Leonard’s and St Philip’s are underused. People will be invited to consider using the space for other activities and there won’t necessarily be a charge - it’s about getting the buildings used by the local community. A diabetic consultant is already setting up in conjunction with the Secret Garden Group who tend the 21 to garden behind the church; young people will be able learn about gardening, have lunch and then see medical people and get lessons on healthy eating for diabetes. Hove Station Neighbourhood Forum Mike Gibson of the Hove Station Neighbourhood Forum said that 140 people had attended a recent Have Your Say Day in the Clarendon Centre. There was an exhibition by Matsim Properties, who want to build 180 apartments in the Hove Station area. Mountpark Properties were also there, acting on behalf of the coal

The meeting discussed the 17-storey tower block proposed for the Sackville Hotel site on Kingsway. Cllr Robert Nemeth said that without a neighbourhood forum you are defenceless against these sorts of proposals. KAWHRA Chair Peter Reeves said that the big issue for most people is the height of the building. The council is currently deciding on the preferred bidder to develop the King Alfred site. A precedent has been set by the previous scheme, for towers of up to 20 storeys. The next West Hove Forum meeting will be at 2pm on Wednesday 27th January 2016, at Hove Methodist Church Hall, Portland Road. We are delighted that the Sussex Police & Crime Commissioner, Katy Bourne, will be coming to speak to us. If you would like to attend on behalf of a residents’ association, business or other organisation, please email us at: westhoveforum@gmail.com or phone the Chair, Ron Gurney, on 01273 385361.

WEST HOVE

Here is a great monthly item to add to your diary...

ROOTS NIGHT AT THE RAILWAY INN In 2016, Hove Folk Club will be heading westwards and turning into a monthly Roots Night concert at the wonderful Railway Inn, opposite Portslade train station. You may well wonder – a Roots Night, what’s that then? Presumably it’s got something to do with folk music, but that’s also pretty hard to define. Short answer is – it’s music that’s interested in being part of a process more than being part of a business, music that knows its history and knows where it’s coming from, as Bob Marley might have said if asked the same question. In the first half of the year we’ve booked artists from the punk, Americana and English chanson traditions, and musicians influenced by the traditional music of Spain and 25 local France, Ireland and England. Plus we’ll be featuring performers from the local area too. Hove Folk Club has been running very successful monthly acoustic gigs upstairs at the Poets’ Corner for seven years now. This has provided a good space for many people to develop their performance skills by doing floor spots in a supportive atmosphere. However, the chance to move to the recently renovated Railway’s really lovely function room/concert space, with its stage, lights and house PA, seemed too good an opportunity to miss. Roots Nights will continue to include floor spots but, as

well as booked guests, there’s also a featured support artist each evening too. We think the fact that the station is just over the road will mean the concerts will be able to attract audiences from further afield too (so we’ll have to make sure we finish on time so people can catch the train home). Roots Night is the first Thursday of every month, more or less. Full details will appear on our website, coming soon in 2016, but the first three concerts are punk legend TV Smith, supported by Jon Mason and Ian Roland, on January 7th, Naomi Bedford, a highly respected vocalist with a fine line in Americana, supported by young songwriter Ed Goodale, on February 4th, and on March 3rd, the songwriting colossus that is Leon Rosselson. Admission is £7, the money goes to the booked guest, and the raffle (usually including a tin of emergency houmous) raises money for the featured support. Further details from info@irregularrecords.co.uk – hope to see you on a Thursday Roots Night down the Railway some time in the coming year. Robb Johnson, disorganiser

I recently asked participants (with weight and portion control issues) at a Detox Yoga Retreat to try a simple exercise in mindfulness over breakfast. I made them slow down and really appreciate what they were eating. It was a revelation! It seems that a lot of diets are about how much and what we’re meant to eat but not how we eat. Mindful eating – slowing down and really concentrating on what’s in your mouth, chewing thoroughly and intending for the food to nourish your body and mind – is to me almost as important as WHAT you eat. Why? • First, eating slowly and chewing thoroughly will improve your digestion – reducing bloat, feeling too full and improving nutrient absorption in your gut. • Secondly, it takes about 15-20 minutes for your brain to register that you’re full, so slow down and give your food time to ‘go down’ and check your hunger levels after 15 minutes into your meal. • Thirdly, food tastes much better when you slow down – or not! Mindful eating will really make you aware of whether the IDEA of eating that particular food was far more exciting than what’s in your mouth. You might find that one chocolate – eaten slowly – tastes far better than a large bar you wolf down in 30 seconds. Happy, healthy 2016! WEST HOVE

Here is a great scheme being run by the council...

FREE CYCLE MAINTENANCE AND TRAINING I remember my first proper bicycle. It was a blue BMX and I cycled regularly around my neighbourhood. I remember cycling to friends’ houses and to parks and enjoying endless childhood summers relishing my newfound freedom my bike gave me. I still get that feeling today, even when I’m cycling to work. The feeling and sensation of cycling is infectious. However, there is nothing worse than getting a puncture or your chain snapping and the fun stopping. There is, however, nothing more satisfying than fixing a puncture, or repairing a chain to get going again. If you don’t know how to do these things it can be really frustrating, and it can be all too easy to forget how much fun riding a bike can be. 31 If you want to cycle again and regain your confidence on a bike, then sign up to Brighton & Hove City Council’s free cycle maintenance and cycle training courses. You can learn to repair your bike and, if you’re a bit wobbly on two wheels, you can brush up on your cycling skills too. All you have to do is visit www.brighton-hove.gov.uk/cycletraining or call 01273 296753 to book on. Daniel, Transport Planner, Brighton & Hove City Council

Do you know someone with a story to tell about Brighton & Hove in the 1940s-60s?

WEST HOVE

ORAL HISTORY PROJECT Giddy, an oral history project, is looking for people who were teenagers during the 1940s-60s to come and share their stories at a series of open workshops – the next one being 20th January 2016, 10am to 2pm, at the Mass Observation Archive at The Keep. The stories will be used to create a two-part digital project, including a smartphone app and an online archive; and an exhibition – all of which will launch to the public in May 2016. The app will take users on a tour of Brighton & Hove, with the personal stories acting as the guide to places of interest, offering a history of Brighton direct from the mouths of the people who lived it. Giddy was conceived by Brighton arts collective The 33 Nimbus Group who have received funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund to help young people from Longhill High School in Rottingdean to learn new skills in archive research, curating, conservation and oral history interviewing. Working with the Mass Observation Archive and the Oral History Society, the young people involved will help recruit and interview participants via the open workshops who will share their stories, and then create the app and online archive. Image courtesy of The Argus Archive

Jamie Wyld, co-Director of The Nimbus Group, says they’re looking for people to recount unusual and personal stories: ‘We’ve heard tales of rationing and mods & rockers before, but usually from the perspective of historians and the media. What we’re keen to hear about are stories that young people today can relate to: a first kiss in a dance hall, love in the face of possible German invasion, being gay in the 1950s, and what it was really like to be part of the mod scene here. ‘Each and every generation of young people thinks it’s the only one to have experienced the giddy highs and lows of adolescence – we want to show that this is a universal theme, instilling a greater sense of understanding between young and old whilst preserving some amazing stories which otherwise may well be lost forever.’ Giddy’s organisers hope those who do decide to come along to share their stories will also take along a photo or other piece of memorabilia associated with that period of their lives. These will be used alongside archive images of Brighton & Hove through the war and postwar decades to create a fascinating online archive for future generations to enjoy. To find out more about how you can get involved, like Giddy on Facebook at www.facebook.com/giddy-brighton and follow on Twitter @NimbusGrp #GiddyBrighton WHD January 2016
