West Hove news…

New season at Hove & Kingsway Bowls Club The season has started again at the Hove and Kingsway bowls club on the seafront. The club had a very successful season in 2021, producing another county singles champion, and had great success in many team competitions. The club has also been working closely with the council and the West Hove Seafront Action Group as the plans are being developed to improve the green spaces and sports facilities on the seafront. Bowls is becoming more and more popular again and the club welcomed lots of new members last year, as well as people coming down to pay and play. The club also welcomed many organisations for team days out and groups of friends who wanted an open-air and easy-to-play activity to get together over and it was lovely to see the greens being so well used.

From 30th April there will be open sessions on Saturday mornings for anyone to try the game, with bowls to borrow and people on hand to give advice on how to play. Just come along from 10am to 11am. If you want to give bowls a try at other times, there are bowls to hire and you can book online to pay and play or become a member. For more information on membership, pay and play and social events visit www.hovebowls.co.uk or email secretary@hovebowls.co.uk

Deepdene PREMIER WINDOWS School closes

Deepdene School and Nursery on New Church Road closed permanently on 1st April for financial reasons. The private school opened in 1948 as a school for girls aged 3-18 and boys aged up to 7. In the 1990s it changed into a school for girls and boys, from 12 months to 7 years, and it later expanded to take children up to 11. In recent years it became part of the Roedean Group of Schools.

West Hove news…

Consultation on closure of St Philip’s Church The Anglican Diocese of Chichester is conducting a consultation on draft proposals to unite the parish of Hove, St Barnabas and St Agnes with the parish of Hove, St Philip and to close St Philip’s Church in New Church Road. Under the draft proposals, Rev John Eldridge would be the first incumbent of the new parish. He would live in the vicarage at St Barnabas Church in Sackville Road. The new parish would be called “The Parish of Hove, Saint Barnabas, Saint Agnes and Saint Philip”. The garden of remembrance, located at the rear of St Philip’s Church, would remain in the care of the new united parish and would be omitted from any proposals regarding the future use of the church. The construction of St Philip’s Church began in 1894 on land donated by the Duke of Portland, at a time when the population of West Hove was rapidly increasing. The first part of the church

opened in 1895 and it was completed by 1910. St Philip’s was paired with St Leonard’s Church in the Parish of Aldrington until 2019 when it joined with Hove Parish, sharing a link with St Barnabas Church. Views on the proposed closure should be sent in writing to: Michael Squire Pastoral Reorganisation Officer Church House 211 New Church Road Hove BN3 4ED Or email: michael.squire@chichester.anglican.org The consultation closes on Tuesday 3rd May.

Local news…

Friends of Hove Lagoon It has been a busy couple of months for FoHL! Storm Eunice was followed by a burst pipe, with water filling up the recently drained Lagoon pools and covering the planting beds with thick chalky clay. The Outdoor Gym was deemed unfit for human use and the council have removed it. We were most unhappy about there being no replacement and our councillors are on the case. There has also been some random vandalism and graffiti on the pavilion walls. On a much more positive note, Spring is finally here, we have a new water fountain behind the Big Beach Café, the painting of the Friendship Bench between the café and the pedalo pool is almost complete and thanks to LagoonFest profits, we are buying three new picnic benches and planning to buy a notice board or two. The planting beds are starting to spring to life and seem no worse for wear after the “flood”. Chris and Tom have reinstated regular gardening sessions at weekends on the second and fourth weekend of the month. Anyone wanting to connect with nature and have some green fingered therapy is welcome to join. Just let us know. We are planning another Summer Raffle with wonderful prizes and are talking to the council about running an event next year, giving us plenty of time to prepare. Please let me know if you would like to volunteer for either/both. More info to come. We have decided not to hold an event on 16th July after all. We are members of West Hove Forum and West Hove Seafront Action Group and have developed links with a number of other local groups including Surfers Against Sewage, the Brighton & Hove Open Spaces Network, Brighton & Hove Wildlife Forum and the “Friends of” Groups for Stoneham Park, Secret Garden, Regency Square and St Ann’s Wells Gardens. We continue to be heavily involved with the council’s Levelling Up Fund Kingsway to the Sea project, with a particular focus on developments at Hove Lagoon and the so-called “Butterfly Bank” by the Gather Inn between Kingsway and Wharf Road.

News from Brighton & Hove City Council…

Kingsway to the Sea drop-in events Residents are invited to find out how plans for West Hove’s Kingsway to the Sea scheme are progressing. The £10m project to rejuvenate rundown and underused spaces on the seafront between King Alfred Leisure Centre and Hove Lagoon includes proposals for new sports facilities, sand sports area, green spaces and a skatepark.

Although these information sessions are not part of any formal planning engagement, there will be an opportunity for residents to give their feedback. Information and drawings will also be posted on the council’s website.

Following a public consultation last year, the council has been working with community groups to develop ideas based on the feedback given.

Work on the ‘Kingsway to the Sea’ project began back in 2018 when the West Hove Forum approached the council to work on plans to develop the area.

News of a collaboration by two local groups…

FoHL/HDSA 2024 calendar Friends of Hove Lagoon (FoHL) and the Hove Deep Sea Anglers Association (HDSA) are collaborating on the production of a 2024 calendar and we need your photos! The idea of a calendar was inspired by the glorious sunsets observed by the staff and members at the HDSA Clubhouse, which has developed into a joint wish to celebrate the delights of the Hove Lagoon (HL) and HDSA area. The calendar will be on sale from September 2023 and any profits will go to our committees’ chosen local charities. If you would like your photo/s to be included in the calendar, we need you to consider the following: •

We welcome photos from amateurs and professionals alike.

There will be no payment for the photo/s, but we will publish the photographers’ names alongside the photo/s, unless requested otherwise.

The printing specification for the photos is for high resolution images saved as TIFF or JPG format in a landscape orientation from a phone or a camera.

The subject/s must relate to the HL and HDSA area.

We are looking for photos that cover all the seasons and a variety of subjects (including sunsets, of course!!)

The successful photos will be chosen by an independent FoHL/HDSA panel and the photographers will be informed before publication.

All photos must be accompanied by written permission for us to print, circulate and sell the calendars containing the photos.

The closing date for submission of all photos is May 31st 2023.

All photos that include adults and children who could be identified must be accompanied by written permission for their images to be printed and circulated in the calendar.

Please send your photos, with all relevant permissions to: https://www.dropbox.com/request/ iKN9YKfqJjyWH0O8RKaY So, get snapping!

Friends of Davis Park For those who haven’t yet discovered it, Davis Park is a wonderful, small park which can be entered via St Heliers Avenue, just off Portland Road. The park was laid out on a two-acre site that was once a brick pit and which was donated to the then Hove Council by the administrators of the NE Davis estate in 1961. Naphtali Ernest Davis owned shops in North Street, Brighton, and was also a property developer responsible for the original West Hove Garden Estate. Davis Park was opened on 27 July 1962 by Councillor William Smith, Mayor of Hove, and Mr Davis’s widow Ethel was present. The park was laid out as a rose garden with lawns and rose beds. There were also tennis courts and a pavilion that had been there before the park opened. The park eventually ran into disrepair and there were moves to demolish it. This caused some conflict with local residents who objected. Eventually, the park was re-landscaped and the new look park was opened on 4th May 1990 by Margaret Adams, Mayor of Hove. More recently, the park became overgrown, and, inspired by our friends at Wish and Stoneham Parks, The Friends of Davis Park was formed and now helps to tidy up the park. First of all we had to uncover the shrubs and bushes that had been overrun by bindweed

News from a local group…

and ivy. Some of the original bushes and trees had become massively overgrown and some had just died and were left to rot. We started to uncover the most wonderful collection of roses from the original park. With a bit of help they should now be free to blossom for the first time in ages. Gradually, some new plants have been introduced to help give the park added colour. In March we were delighted to be able to take delivery of 11 wonderful trees as part of The West Hove Trees Project; thanks go to Richard Hearnden from The Friends of Stoneham Park. Cityparks Projects Officer Mark Syrett was on hand to deliver, teach and supervise the planting of these, the first new trees to be planted in Davis Park for many years. And guess what, after only a few weeks all of our wonderful new trees are in leaf and bud. We are always looking for new volunteers to help us in our ongoing efforts. We can be found in the park most Sunday mornings from 10-12. Just stroll in - there is nothing quite like working in a park to lift your spirits and to give you fresh air and exercise! @friendsofdavispark Instagram / Facebook Tony Tydeman

Meet a local resident…

West Hove person…Jen Kennedy Jen Kennedy lives in West Hove. She is organising a jumble trail flea market on Sunday 15th May in the St Leonard’s area of West Hove. What is your background? I grew up in Sussex, moved to Exeter for university, and had been longing to move back “home” since. I moved through some amazing happenings in 2019. My background is as an adult education tutor and psychotherapist/ counsellor. I describe myself as a “mental health activist”. How did you come to start organising jumble trails? I first saw the idea in Exeter. I was so looking forward to my new, vibrant life here, then, six months later, LOCKDOWN! I loved lockdown. I usually feel crippling loneliness as a single mother but as my big daughter was back from university the loneliness went. I managed to get my sewing machine out (first time in 20 years). I started making facemasks, then some lovely bunting with vintage fabric. I knew there were other lonely people out there needing some JOY, so I thought a jumble trail would be a brilliant way to meet my new community, bring people together, give people something to do, a chance to get creative, get rid of pre-loved stuff, and raise our mental wellness.

and, with prices rising, a great way to make your money stretch further. What are your other interests? I write. I’m currently writing book number three, a trilogy about believing in life and recovery from health issues. I am looking for a publisher, if anyone out there is able to help! I plan to start a podcast this year. I love going to church, and I paint. The jumble trail is on Sunday 15th May, 1pm4pm, in St Leonard’s Road, Avenue and Gardens, Erroll Road and Seaford Road. For more information, phone Jen on 07793 960977.

Has anything changed since you first started? Only one thing really… We have a stunning flyer designed by neighbour Nancy Chateaux. We no longer put flyers up on trees/lamp-posts. If you do a jumble trail a word of warning: DO NOT PUT THEM UP ON COUNCIL PROPERTY. I did this. It resulted in a fine. I was so upset. So this has definitely changed! We hear the idea has spread… YES! I was shocked no one had heard of a Jumble Trail here. A wonderful one was done in Hallyburton Road. My little girl got this amazing M&S yellow biker jacket for £3 and a dollar sign necklace for 50p. A couple of super trails happened around Gardener Street, Portslade. It was just so good to see people out on the street smiling in the sun. Communities raise money for charity. It is an ethical way to buy Have a local editorial item? 20 News from Chris Henry and Carmen Appich, Labour councillors for Westbourne ward…

Westbourne Councillor News There are lots of things happening in wonderful Westbourne that sometimes need more awareness and kudos. The volunteers at the Food & Friendship Club who cook meals at Hove Methodist Church for older people and adults with learning difficulties every Tuesday and Thursday, are one such thing. Carmen and I have been supporting them since 2019 and they’ve grown to the point of feeding around 60 people each week and offering a much-needed get-together for some of the most lonely people in our community. They’re currently looking for a volunteer fundraiser, so if you know someone with those skills please contact them at foodandfriendship.org.uk More examples of work happening behind the scenes that you may be unaware of, are our efforts to try and make our area more ‘dementia-friendly’ and to try and force Cityclean to monitor missed bin collections. Missed collections continue to be an issue and we’ve had enough of it remaining unresolved. There is no effective monitoring system in place and we believe if complaints were monitored, Cityclean could see where the hot-spots were and get it sorted. If you suffer from missed collections report it here: www. brighton-hove.gov.uk

We also meet regularly with your local policing team and in April we held a drop-in session in Hove Library. These are now planned monthly and if you have any need to chat to Aidan and team please come along. The next dates are: Tuesday 10th May 2022 – 10:00am-12:00 midday and Tuesday 14th June 2022 – 10:00am12:00 midday. We are still seeing incidents of anti-social behaviour and attempts at burglary, but overall Westbourne is a great place to live – but then again, we already knew that!

The Kingsway-to-the Sea £10M regeneration plans continue at pace and our local forums continue to meet and scrutinise the designs and quiz the council officers. Carmen and I continue to attend and ensure residents’ voices are heard and that we fulfil our election promise of making the area more ‘family friendly’. If you have questions or want to be more involved you Chris and Carmen can contact the Seafront Office via email: Christopher.Henry@brighton-hove.gov.uk SeafrontOffice@brighton-hove.gov.uk Carmen.Appich@brighton-hove.gov.uk IMPORTANT... 23 Poets Corner news…

Beautiful weather over Easter brought out the best in our parks in Hove, and now that spring is here we are looking to get stuck in with sprucing up Stoneham Park. Our trees are now being regularly watered by a small team of volunteers on a rota. I am extremely grateful to them for their hard work. If we can get more people on the rota, then the task will be less arduous for those already on it. If you would like to help us keep the new trees growing strong, then please get in touch by email.

their friends groups. Wish Park (which has also been part of the West Hove Trees Project) is looking gorgeous, thanks to an avenue of trees planted alongside the play park there. The most improved park in the area is surely Davis Park, tucked away off St Heliers Avenue. The Friends of Davis Park have been busy for months clearing away all the overgrowth and planting bulbs. The result is beautiful and very impressive, with a riot of colours provided by daffodils, cyclamen and tulips. It just goes to show what these friends groups are capable of.

29 News from the council…

Toads Hole Valley update At a special meeting of the Planning Committee on 21 March, councillors voted to indicate that they would have refused planning permission for the proposed Toads Hole Valley development.

A public inquiry will now be held in early June to determine the application. The decision taken by the Planning Committee will form the basis of the council’s submission to that inquiry. Committee members were asked to decide on the application as if it had been put before them in a normal situation. After hearing from council officers, representatives of the developer and local community groups, councillors voted to refuse the application as the final transport modelling audit and the road safety assessment were still not available.

HOVE PARK

The developers have appealed to the Planning Inspectorate as Brighton & Hove City Council had been unable to give a decision on the application. This was due to both National Highways and the council, as the highway authority, not having sufficient information to assess the impact on the A27 and other local roads. This has made it impossible for the council to decide to grant or refuse the application.

be given the opportunity to decide on whether to approve or refuse at a local level, taking into account the fully assessed traffic and safety impact on the local road network.

The committee also voted to inform the inspector of two issues that they would like to see in the proposals. These were that at least two of the five-bedroom houses in the development should form part of the affordable housing allocation, and that bridges or tunnels are considered for some of the links to neighbouring areas, rather than all being light-controlled road crossings. The public Inquiry This will take place on Thursday 9 and Friday 10 June, and Tuesday 14 to Friday 17 June inclusive. All days will be at the Jubilee Library, except the last day which will take place at Brighton Town Hall Duplicate planning application Toads Hole Valley Limited has also submitted a duplicate planning application. This is identical to the latest version of the original application submitted at the end of 2018. This duplicate application means that city councillors would still Have a local editorial item? 31 The view on Toads Hole Valley from the Goldstone Valley Residents’ Association…

Toads Hole Valley… Goldstone Valley Residents’ Association At the end of March Councillors on the Planning Committee met to decide the Toads Hole Valley application.

HOVE PARK

The Council said: “After hearing from council officers, representatives of the developer and local community groups, councillors voted to refuse the application as the final transport modelling audit and the road safety assessment were still not available.” Councillors agreed unanimously and the application was refused and will now be decided by the Planning Inspector at a Public Inquiry. The Council recently requested a postponement to June’s Public Inquiry in order to analyse new information received regarding the highway plans. The Planning Inspector has rejected the postponement “as no exceptional reasons were identified to necessitate it”. It would appear that the Council and National Highways have just received the Stage 1 Road Safety Audit, which flagged up a number of road safety issues necessitating junction redesigns. Since 47 road safety issues were flagged in a previous report on this proposal, this was not a surprise. This means the applicant has to respond to the report, presumably redesign the junctions again and hence led to the Council’s request to postpone the Public Inquiry. We can only speculate what the main issues are, but suspect they are referring to the two A27 Strategic Road Network roundabout junctions and possibly elsewhere too. It’s great to see that concerns raised regarding traffic are being taken seriously and we hope that this will result in much better proposals that will make roads in the area safer, accessible for all and without huge amounts of traffic congestion from all the new developments being built in Hove. 32 News from Conservative councillors for Hove Park Samer Bagaeen and Vanessa Brown…

Hove Park Councillor News CLIMATE & YOUNG PEOPLE

NEVILL AVENUE

Samer accepted an invitation from BHASVIC to contribute last month to a sustainability masterclass and he has taken part for the second year running in a Schools Climate Q&A with the city’s three MPs and children from schools across the city.

We have been asked by residents to look at the junction of Nevill/Holmes Avenues. Officers have visited the junction noting that existing double yellow lines at this junction, approximately 15 metres in length, are adequate for visibility and safety at the junction. We have agreed with officers to explore double yellow lines at the junction of Tudor Close with Holmes Avenue on the northern side to further improve safety for crossing.

HOVE PARK SHARED PATH We have been asked again by residents to remind Hove Park users that the pathway cutting through the middle of the park from the Droveway is a shared path. We have pressed this point on the administration of the council to signpost it clearly as such. As this update goes to press, we are still waiting for the administration’s delayed written response. DEFIBRILLATOR IN HOVE PARK We reported on this last month and the great news this month is that the Hove Park Tennis Alliance have decided to fund and purchase one. The Alliance will attempt to keep it as vandal-proof as possible by locating it within the tennis courts. THE DECIMATION OF THE THREE CORNERED COPSE Healthy trees and those affected by ash dieback were felled by the council over the past few weeks. To carry out tree removal on this scale, the council must apply to the government’s Forestry Commission for a special Felling Licence, which must also include plans for the restocking, regeneration or improvements to each site before the commission will agree. We are working with officers to ensure that this replanting and improvements are in place as soon as possible and in consultation with residents.

MODA/SACKVILLE A Hove resident and a highly experienced public art specialist has been engaged by MODA to work on the development’s public art strategy. He has met with us and with residents as part of the initial phase of this strategy. The artistic components and their associated strategies are delegated to officer level for council sign-off. TONGDEAN CONSERVATION AREA The council is considering a review but there is consensus that all the features which were regarded as important when the CA was first designated in 1989 are still evident. We are against any potential de-designation. Artists Open Houses in the Hove Park area May comes alive with glorious art all over the city. This year Artists Open Houses are celebrating 40 years and one venue, the Church of the Good Shepherd (272 Dyke Road), is celebrating its centennial. From 7th May and the next four weekends, a colourful array of art lit by the stained glass is on show for your delight. Thirteen local artists’ work is on sale, raising funds for numerous charities including Ukraine - from garden jardinières to small sculptures and dishes, from photographs on canvas to original wood reliefs, from abstract art to local landscapes and seascapes. During each weekend, at the church there will be demonstrations on sketch book techniques, creating textures and wood relief printing. The exhibition features a group of five artists and makers who all share their inspiration from the untamed qualities in nature in their creativity. Paintings, sculpture, jewellery and a collaboration with a soundscape artist are all exhibited. This year, short film collaborations with cellist and soundscape artist Eve Whittingham will be shown in Kate’s studio, which is an exciting new addition. The garden is open with sculpture – and also refreshments and cake! The artists featured are: Kate Scott - contemporary paintings; Christian Funnel - metal sculpture; Emma Stanton - handmade jewellery; Jayne Armstrong - artist in wood; and Eve Whittingham musician / soundscape artist. The house is a short walk from Hove Station and parking is free at weekends. The inside exhibition space is all on one level. Opening dates: 20, 21 & 22 May May, 11am-6pm. 36 Meet a vet who can visit your cat at home…

Coastal Cat Vet…Nikki Gaut Dr Nikki Gaut is a vet who specialises in feline medicine. With the help of two veterinary nurses, she runs The Coastal Cat Vet, Brighton & Hove’s first feline-only home visiting veterinary service. How did you come to set up The Coastal Cat Vet? The Coastal Cat Vet is the culmination of over 20 years of studying and working with cats. It is a dream come true to finally create what I believe is the best way to care for these fascinating creatures. Over the years I have seen many cats come into my consultation room petrified after a stressful journey in a car and carrier and then a busy waiting room. As a cat lover and owner, I knew there must be a better way. By bringing my veterinary skills into the home, cats (and their owners) are more relaxed in a familiar environment and as a result diagnosis is easier and recovery is often quicker. Brighton and Hove is full of cat-lovers who I think want a more personal and caring approach to their cat’s health, so we turn up to your door and take the time to get to know you and your cat without the time pressures or fear of a veterinary clinic. What services do you offer? Anything that can be done in a consultation room can be done in your living room – we arrive in our electric MINI and offer consultations, vaccinations, blood and urine testing, blood pressure measurement, acupuncture and ultrasonography. For anything surgical we have a state-of-

the-art surgical van. The Catmobile, as it’s affectionately known, can pull up outside your door and offer dental surgery (including digital dental radiography), surgery such as neutering and minor procedures and even visiting specialists for endoscopy and dermatology. It’s so wonderful to see these cats happily returned into their owners’ arms just hours after we arrived, having never left their own doorstep. What are the most frequent issues you see with cats? We see a lot of dental and arthritic issues with cats. They are masters of disguise when it comes to chronic pain and often their owners mistakenly put any behavioural changes down to age. It is really rewarding to treat these patients and suddenly, to their owner’s surprise they are behaving like a kitten again! 39 Local history from Rachel Bridgeman…

The Old Aldringtonians Aldrington hails back to this dark age when Ealdhere established his “ton” – an enclosed farmstead or settlement – on this fertile coastal plain. Over the centuries, and countless tongue turns, the name morphed to the Old English Eldretune and on to Aldrington. After the Norman invasion of 1066, Domesday recorded this busy agricultural area as populated by 73 households, putting it in the largest 20% of settlements in the newly conquered lands. It rivalled its easterly neighbour, Bristelmestune, in importance with almost double the taxable value (although lacking the Bristelmestune slave). Divided east to west between two Manors, west Aldrington was held by the Manor of Portslade (and was renamed Copperas Gap in the 17th century and Portslade-by-Sea in the 1860s) whilst the east was annexed to the Manor of Hangleton with a hide of land granted to Lewes Priory. With the Dissolution of the Priory in 1537, the monks’ land passed to the King, who bestowed it on Thomas Cromwell. When Queen Elizabeth I ascended the throne in 1571, that portion of Aldrington fell to her hands. Meanwhile coastal erosion engulfed 40 acres of land, submerging the ancient village under the waves, and by 1801 the parish only had 2 residents left. Later, Aldrington would rise phoenix-like from the ash and cinders of her brickfields (firing bricks to sate the demands of the

burgeoning towns of Brighton and Hove). And as her neighbours of Hove and Portslade spilt over her borders, housing spread across the parish. In 1893, Aldrington amalgamated with Hove. The Aldrington parish boundary is Boundary Road to the west, in the north it stretches to include the cemeteries and Knoll Park, and in the east it is marked by the bed of the ancient Westbourne river (just to the east of Westbourne Street), which once entered the sea at Aldrington. Remains of the flint boundary wall with the parish of Hove can still be viewed at Westbourne Place. 43 Advertorial: Local business goes nationwide...

Hove fishmonger launches fresh fish home deliveries nationwide A STALWART of our local fishing industry has launched a home delivery service nationwide after it proved such a hit locally during lockdown. Brighton & Newhaven Fish Sales, known locally as Fish, has long been providing Sussex Coast seafood both through its shop in Hove Lagoon, and via local delivery to restaurants and hotels.

GENERAL

During Covid-19 lockdown, as hospitality sales ground to a halt, Fish says it had to pivot to maintain sales and protect the livelihoods not only of its staff but the Sussex fishermen and women who had come to rely on their distribution network since its inception 50 years ago. Doorstep deliveries spiked at 500 boxes in a single week in 2020 and post lockdown its customers asked for a continuation of the home delivery fishmonger. So now, with its Fish at Home brand, the company says it is delivering ‘freshness-guaranteed’ fish to people’s homes not just in Brighton and Hove, but nationwide.

Box, will give seafood fans a selection of fish caught in local waters, such as Dab, Flounder and Huss, that are usually exported because of a lack of interest in UK markets.

Fish company director Kier Foster said: “Fish is something people want to eat completely fresh and we know, from research and from what customers tell us, that they want to know that the fish they’re eating hasn’t been sat in storage for two weeks.

“Home delivery was the clear solution for us, but we want to encourage people to be more adventurous with their seafood diet also,” said Kier.

“The pandemic has clearly changed consumer habits in all sorts of ways and I think that includes how we want to buy and consume seafood. We have simply had to respond to what the customer now wants.” And Kier and his team will do so with an offer that will also tap into greater demand for sustainable catches. One of Fish at Home’s products, Sussex Catch Export

“We want to ensure the survival of our own business and the fishing fleets, but also make sure that people can still have local and seasonal fish as part of their diet. The response and subsequent demand for the service so far has been incredible. “By allowing us to choose your fish for you, you’re immediately becoming a more responsible consumer of seafood. We can also provide some tasty recipes for you.” For more information, visit https://fishathome.co.uk

45 Jesse Sheriff tells us about his family’s campsite in the beautiful New Forest…

Harry’s Meadow Harry’s Meadow is a family-friendly campsite in the New Forest, which offers spectacular views across the Avon Valley. Jesse Sheriff tells us more… Jesse (left) with his dad

How did your family come to set up a campsite? My grandad’s house overlooks our original campsite, Harry’s Field, so the name ‘Harry’s’ is a homage to him (he’s 90, rides a motorbike and goes swimming in the sea throughout the winter, so a bit of a legend!). Camping has always been a meaningful pastime in our family, so when the opportunity came up to buy some land next to Grandad’s house eight years ago, and turn it into a campsite, it was a no-brainer. Since then we have opened a further two sites, Harry’s Meadow and Harry’s Old Airfield. What facilities does Harry’s Meadow offer? Harry’s Meadow is situated within the beautiful Hale Park Estate and spans 50 acres of New Forest parkland. We don’t have pre-allocated spaces, so our campers can pitch up wherever they want. We wanted to create a feeling of uninhabited freedom, but it was important to balance the ‘wild camping’ experience with some extensive facilities. We therefore provide 10 hot showers, 20 loos, sinks with hot water and multiple fresh water drinking points. We offer fire pits for hire, so our guests can sit around a campfire at night (a key part of any camping experience!). We also have a range of food and beverages served onsite, such as a pizza oven, a full bar and fresh coffee in the morning.

Additionally we have a communal stretch tent with benches and hay bales to sit on, where our campers congregate in the evenings. You also offer luxury bell tents. Tell us about those… Yes, we have the pre-erected bell tents which are always popular. They come with beds and other soft furnishings. They can take a bit of the stress out of camping. What are the main attractions of the area? The River Avon is a four-minute walk and one of the best wild swimming spots in The New Forest. There are also miles of walks and forest trails to explore, or for a day trip there is the cathedral city of Salisbury, or Peppa Pig World which is 20 minutes away. Where is your own favourite place to camp? We love heading down to North Devon in our 1960s VW camper. We have a spot near the sea that we head to in September once our season has finished, and we can finally relax and take our turn at being the campers. Harry’s Meadow is in the village of Hale near Fordingbridge, Hampshire. Visit newforestcampsite.com, email harrysmeadow@gmail.com or phone 07534 006137.

The Dance Space On 16 July 2022 Brighton & Hove will become the proud owner of the city’s first ever purpose-built dance house, The Dance Space, with celebrations kicking off with Our City Dances, a week of free performances, events and classes for everybody. Four performances are on offer during Brighton & Hove’s busy festival season, including the world premiere of Some Other Place by Italian dance artist Sara Sguotti, the first artist in residence at The Dance Space. Elinor Lewis presents Timber at 8pm on 27 and 28 May – a duet about reclaiming risky spaces, subverting limitation, and finding space to flourish within precarious situations. A different kind of dance show for very young children and their families takes place in partnership with Brighton Festival at 11am and 1.30pm on Saturday 21 May, including a stay and play session. It’s ok is a duet full of care, comfort and kindness performed in a giant perspex box, created with and for children aged 3-5 years and their families. Because I Can is a solo piece performed by acclaimed dance artist Lauren Potter, taking place at 8pm on 10 & 11 May as part of Brighton Fringe. Setting out to explore how society expects older women to behave, Because I Can challenges how women seem to become invisible after a certain age. 49 It’s festival time and there are events for the whole family…

Brighton Festival 2022 We’re back to a full-scale Brighton Festival at last, for three weeks from 7th May, when Brighton city centre will once again be filled with a sea of colour as thousands of school children celebrate the return of the Children’s Parade after a two-year gap. This year’s theme is Rebuilding and Hope. The parade starts on Jubilee Street at 10.30am and ends on Madeira Drive.

In Hove, there will be a host of concerts at All Saints Church in The Drive, including the Ruysdael Quartet from the Netherlands. Their programme looks back to Purcell and then Beethoven’s unrivalled mastery of the string quartet and brings the form into the 21st century with Louis Andriessen’s Miserere (25 May, 7.30pm). Other performers include Riot Ensemble, The Marian Consort and the Rihab Azar Trio. All Saints will also be hosting a number of hourlong lunchtime concerts featuring classical stars of the future, including countertenor Hugh Cutting (with pianist George Ireland), whose recital features works by Monteverdi, Purcell, Howells, Vaughan Williams, Benjamin and Muhly (10 May, 1pm, All Saints Church). Other young talents include pianists Joe Howson, Iyad Sughayer and Ariel Lanyi, who plays with violinist Charlotte Saluste-Bridoux, plus harpsichordist Béatrice Martin and the Echéa Quartet. Paraorchestra will invite you to dance and sing along with their music parade in SMOOSH! at festival venue The Riwaq on Hove seafront on Sunday 29 May (free, 2pm & 4pm). Full route information will be available at brightonfestival.org.

GENERAL

Plenty of the 150+ festival events are family-friendly. For young readers, acclaimed authors such as Michael Rosen will be sharing inspiration. Popular young children’s band Andy and the Odd Socks will star in their own CBeebies/CBBC show Andy and the Band (Sun 22 May, 3pm, Brighton Dome Concert Hall). And Groove into the Woods is a jazz and funk fuelled family adventure into the deep dark woods, for children aged 3-7 and their grown-ups (Sat 28 May, 11am, Brighton Dome Concert Hall).

The Ruysdael Quartet; photo by Eduard Uslee

At outdoor venues around the city, including Hangleton Park, St Ann’s Well Gardens and Beach Level at the i360, Without Walls will present an exhilarating selection of free pop-up performances from some of the UK’s most innovative artistic companies. To see the full Brighton Festival programme or buy tickets, visit www.brightonfestival.org.

Catch Best Newcomer nominee Maisie Adam at the Caroline of Brunswick and rising star Chloe Petts is at The Caxton Arms. “Mates” pays homage to the 90s sitcom

CEO Julian Caddy says: “Brighton Fringe is back. Over the past six months, people have worked furiously to get us to where we are today, despite all the challenges we have all faced. The result is a uniquely creative, diverse and affordable programme that we can all be proud of, with something for everyone to enjoy - and we can’t wait!” For more information or tickets, visit brightonfringe.org

59 A large variety of shows at the BOAT in Dyke Road Park…

May at the Brighton Open Air Theatre The Brighton Open Air Theatre is staging a host of shows in May, as part of Brighton Fringe.

Music includes Glen Richardson’s One-Man Live Aid. Glen has been a professional human jukebox for decades and is raising money for Martlets Hospice with a piano/vocal request show (8 May). The Dead Beat Poets and The Marching Skaletons form a fantastic double-header of musical entertainment. The Dead Beat Poets bring comic beatnik poetry underscored with percussion and howling saxophones, while The Marching Skaletons are a Day of the Dead-style eightpiece ska band, igniting the party with Jamaican old school classics and originals (15 May). Practically Perfect! is a light-hearted, affectionate and moving musical play about the life of Julie Andrews, filled with some of her bestknown songs (22 May). There’s also a performance of Gilbert & Sullivan’s Iolanthe (29 May), a musical play Bonny & Read (11 May) and Drag in the Park is back with Sax and Singalong (7 May).

For children, The Princess and the Pea is a charming production of the fairy tale, with a crystal-clear narrative, fantastic dancing, beautiful costumes and lovely music (21 May). There are all kinds of comedy shows in May. Improvised comedy troupe Pinch Punch welcome you aboard their hilarious and exciting show, Murder on The Improvised Express: a fully improvised murder mystery where the audience must help solve the case. There will be outrageous accents and larger-than-life characters, along with thrills, spills, and good old-fashioned kills (26 May). Other comedy includes Stand-Up Under The Stars with Reginald D Hunter (6 May) and Shake’d Up, a hilarious, unpredictable show based on four different Shakespeare plays (19 May).

GENERAL

A highlight this month is a showcase of Burundi Dance by Team Buja Artists – a cast of 25 dancers celebrating Burundi culture (12 May).

There is also a wide variety of drama, including The Spirit of Woodstock (5 May), and there’s an Open-Air Poetry Slam on 18 May. Full programme and tickets at: brightonopenairtheatre.co.uk Team Buja will showcase Burundian dance

61 News from the council…

Drinking water fountains

Park Active

As a nation, we use more than seven billion plastic water bottles a year, creating a mountain of plastic waste. Providing free drinking water refill stations will reduce the need to buy plastic bottles. The units also include water fountains so there’s no need to use a bottle if you’re on the go! The first two filling stations were unveiled in March at Hove Lawns and Hove Lagoon skate park and are already being well used. The others are at Churchill Square, on the plaza at the entrance to the Palace Pier, in front of Hove Town Hall and outside Brighton Station. If successful, more fountains could be installed. The six water fillers were due to be installed in 2020, but plans were put on hold due to the increase in COVID-19 infections. However, now that restrictions have been lifted and there is much more known about the transmission of the coronavirus, the council and public health teams are confident that the water stations can be safely installed, and any health risks minimised with regular cleaning and maintenance. Cllr Hannah Clare at one of the new bottle filling stations

Working with the British Parking Association, three of the city’s car parks have been launched as ‘Park Active’ car parks (parkactive. co.uk). When a fully active or sustainable journey isn’t possible, people are encouraged to use the King Alfred, London Road and Norton Road car parks and continue their onward journey by bicycle, on foot or by public transport. Wayfinding signage has been installed in and around all three to guide people towards popular routes and destinations and all are situated close to BTN BikeShare hubs.

GENERAL

Six new drinking water fountains and bottle filling points are being installed in busy parts of the city in a bid to cut down on plastic bottle use and reduce litter.

The council are offering a new way to travel actively and sustainably around Brighton & Hove.

The project is also working in collaboration with the council’s Move for Change challenge (moveforchange.betterpoints.uk), powered by the BetterPoints app. People can download the app to log their onward journey from Park Active car parks and start earning rewards to spend at local businesses or donate to local charities.

63 News from the Friends of St Ann’s Well Gardens…

St Ann’s Well Gardens Spring Festival St Ann’s Well Gardens is one of Brighton and Hove’s most treasured and loved city parks. The Spring Festival was established 14 years ago to celebrate the park’s centenary and over the years we have seen the festival grow into one of the finest free festivals in the country and it is now a firm date in many Brightonians’ diaries.

After two years’ absence, this year’s festival on Saturday 21st May (11am-7.30pm) will have a fabulous musical line-up with Dub Pistols headlining on the Main Stage. In addition we have pop-up performances throughout the day: samba, steel band, choirs and dancers. Our park will be full of entertainment and activities for all ages, including The Little Big Top hosting ‘Pazaz Circus’ and ‘Music with Mike’ shows, tennis fun and games with St Ann’s Tennis Club, archery, Medieval Village and falconry, bungee trampolines, Kids Fun Zone and Kids Creative Zone. For the first year we will be hosting an Artists Open House in the Sensory Garden where 20 local artists will be exhibiting their work for you to view and purchase. In addition to The Garden Café, we will have street food from around the world, a Pimm’s tent, a festival bar with local brews, and lots of sweet treats.

65 News from Hove Civic Society…

Hove Boulevard transforming Church Road For many years now Hove Civic Society has argued for an improvement to Church Road which we’d like to see transformed to our own Hove Boulevard. Church Road is a fine street, lined by interesting and high-quality buildings and passing through five conservation areas. Unfortunately the potential of the road is just not realised, as it is dominated by a wide carriageway with very little space for pedestrians and cyclists and few opportunities to stop and sit in the open air. The whole street is bereft of trees and shrubs.

Hove is going through a major transformation at the moment, not least around Hove Station where the new Hove Station Quarter is emerging. This is within 10-15 minutes walk of Church Road and we will soon have thousands of additional residents living and working here and wishing to enjoy themselves. Hove Boulevard could become one of their favoured destinations, as it already is for many of us. What a potential boost for the local economy! We believe our proposal meets all the objectives of the City Council’s emerging Local Transport Strategy and at a recent deputation to the City Council there was a request for funding to design and cost the proposal so it could go into the Local Transport Plan 5. This would then be the start of extensive consultations and would require a lot of listening to many different groups to get a design that achieves general support in our community. The idea is supported by all local ward councillors in Wish and Hove Central Wards and I am pleased to say also by a number of sustainable transport organisations including Living Streets and Brighton Active Travel as well as the community and business group Love George Street. We are working to build further support

GENERAL

We believe there is tremendous scope for improvements, scope to introduce a model of a sustainable thoroughfare, which can serve as a demonstration project for the type of city we should become. More trees, more space for pedestrians and cyclists, more scope for cafés and restaurants to expand onto the pavements. With thanks to Stickland Wright Architects

for this important improvement to Hove. Not least because Hove needs its fair share of the resources spent in the city! Join us at Hove Civic Society to help bring change and much needed improvements to Hove. Helmut Lusser Chairman, Hove Civic Society https://hovecivicsociety.org/

City Downland Estate survey Did you know that Brighton & Hove City Council owns 12,500 acres of land in the South Downs, most of which is within the National Park? This land is called the City Downland Estate and includes farms, parks and land used for leisure, sports and recreation. Residents of Brighton and Hove are being asked to help put the finishing touches to a City Downland Estate Plan that will set out how the council will manage this estate for the next 100 years. A draft plan has been created following a huge citywide consultation in late 2020/early 2021 which attracted more than 3,000 ideas and comments from residents. Now residents

40th anniversary for AOH 2022 is a special year for Brighton and Hove’s Artists Open Houses festival as it celebrates its 40th anniversary. The festival began in 1981 when artist Ned Hoskins opened his house in Fiveways to the public to view his work and that of his friends.

Festival highlights include: Devil’s Dyke Farm This brand-new venue just outside Brighton has stunning views. It’s located on the historic site of the terminus station of the Dyke Railway, complete with the original platform, and this is the first time it’s been open to the public since 1938! Work on display will include ceramics, paintings, textiles, jewellery, leather work and photography. Devil’s Dyke Farm Cottages, Devil’s Dyke Road, BN1 8YL

Flat 1, 33 Adelaide Crescent, Hove, BN3 2JJ Ruth Mulvie – Hove Trail Ruth is a contemporary fine artist known for her vivid palette and unexpected detail in her paintings. 73 Healthy living advice from Mary Henderson, a doctoral researcher in gut health…

Sweet sleep A third of us in the UK suffer from inadequate sleep. Short sleep (under 7-8 hours), social jetlag (irregular bedtimes throughout the week), long sleep (over 9 hours) and disrupted sleep.

Why is this? When you’re more tired, you’re more likely to do less physical activity, which includes unconscious activity like fidgeting. Then there’s craving sweet and fatty foods when we’re tired. This is because poor sleep messes with our appetite hormones ghrelin and leptin making us crave sweet foods and feel less full. Not getting enough shut-eye disrupts our nervous systems which has a knock-on effect on our glucose regulation and blood

pressure which are risk factors for pre-diabetes. Our reward system in the brain is also unsettled making us more sensitive to food cues and more likely to snack. Bad sleep is associated with an overall poorer diet quality, less vitamins, minerals and variety.

GENERAL

Short sleep in children and adolescents has a 42% increased risk of obesity and a 38% increased risk in adults. Generally, it carries an increased risk in all-cause mortality, and type 2 diabetes and heart disease. It affects our mental health making us more susceptible to anxiety, stress and depression.

We all have a central body clock which is affected by different cues, the most important being sunlight and darkness. This clock sends messages to our body tissues and regulates core temperature. This controls our feeding and fasting rhythms and, if out of sync, put simply, upsets our metabolism which leads to weight gain and diabetes. Irregular eating patterns, eating late and food composition can disrupt sleeping. Our metabolism follows our body clock and is geared up to burn calories in the earlier part of the day and store fat at night. We all know about avoiding exercise close to bedtime, caffeine late in the day, and big meals late evening. While alcohol can make you sleepy, it actually causes insomnia. Having a darkened, uncluttered bedroom is conducive to sleep. Avoid screens and blue light. Switching off from the stresses of the day is tough. Having clear boundaries between work and home is important. The return of the commute can help but if you continue to work from home, pack your work-station up or shut the door; and don’t look at work emails and messages! A hobby is a good way to switch off. Go to bed at regular times and according to your chronotype. This might be tough for a lot of us in practice, but definitely something to take seriously.

76 A Fringe show at The Old Market theatre…

News from Theatre Royal Brighton…

Happily Never After

The Homecoming

Homegrown Brighton improv company The Maydays are 18 years old this year.

A production of Harold Pinter’s masterpiece The Homecoming will be visiting Theatre Royal Brighton from 2-7 May.

From their first show in the Marlborough Theatre in Kemptown in 2004, to 300-seater The Old Market at this year’s Fringe Festival, this local company has definitely come of age. Established in 2004, the multi-award-winning Maydays have been quietly gathering an army of fans around the world with their playful humour and exceptional talent for creating both comedy and breath-taking theatre from nothing. This year’s Brighton Fringe will be their first Happily Never After show since the pandemic began in 2020. Mixing humour with the macabre, Happily Never After is a hugely popular and deliciously dark musical tale inspired by Tim Burton and The Brothers Grimm. Created from the seed of an audience suggestion, The Maydays weave a fantastical tale, full of black comedy, playful characters, and haunting live music that’s different every time. The Old Market, Hove, 8th May, 7.30pm brightonfringe.org / theoldmarket.com

Harold Pinter’s 1960s masterpiece is widely regarded as his finest play. This bleakly funny exploration of family and relationships has become a modern classic and winner of the Tony Award for Best New Play. Teddy, a professor in an American university, returns to his childhood home accompanied by his wife, Ruth, to find his father, uncle and brothers still living there. In the subsequent series of encounters, life becomes a barely camouflaged battle for power and sexual supremacy fought out with taut verbal brutality. Who will emerge victorious – the poised and elegant Ruth or her husband’s dysfunctional family? Star of BBC’s Gavin & Stacey, Mathew Horne, plays Lenny, Teddy’s enigmatic brother. Versatile actor, comedian and musician Keith Allen plays the brutal patriarch, Max. Four-time Olivier Award nominee Ian Bartholomew plays Sam. Teddy is played by Sam Alexander whose recent TV appearances include Rhys in Emmerdale. RSC regular Geoffrey Lumb plays Joey. Shanaya Rafaat (BBC’s Doctor Who) plays Ruth. 77 A sponsored walk along the coast…

Brighton RNLI Mayday Mile On Saturday 14th May Brighton RNLI will be holding a sponsored walk the length of Brighton and Hove beach, from Hove Lagoon to the Lifeboat Station in Brighton Marina.

The Brighton Lifeboat (a B Class Atlantic 85) provides a 24/7 rescue service along the coastline between Newhaven and Shoreham and is entirely manned by volunteers and funded by donations. Rescues haven’t slowed down over the last two years, but not much fundraising has been able to take place, so the team are excited to be more visible in the community again. They’re also hoping to raise awareness about sea safety and what to do in the event of an emergency at sea or on the coast (call 999 and ask for the coastguard). To sign up for the Mayday Mile visit: register.rnli. org/ps/event/BrightonMaydayMile

GENERAL

The 4.5 mile long walk will take in the Hove beach huts, Angel of Peace, i360 and both piers before ending at the Lifeboat Station, which contains a shop and visitors centre. Taking on this walk with family, friends or as a solo challenge will help raise money for the RNLI, who work all along this stretch of coast and beyond it.

On the day come to our registration table east of the Hove Deep Sea Angling Club to sign in and start the walk between 11am – 1pm. Expect a reward at the other end in the RNLI Brighton Lifeboat Station Shop. There will be stewards to help you with the route and sights to spot every half mile along the walk.

News from the council…

Urban Tree Challenge Fund Applications are invited for the Urban Tree Challenge Fund (UTCF). The aim of the fund is to encourage community groups to plant trees in urban areas with low canopy cover. The UTCF supports planting of large ‘standard’ trees. To be eligible for UTCF funding, groups will need to undertake the planting and maintaining of the trees in the future. The UTCF is accepting submissions until the end of May 2022. 158 trees have so far been funded by 11 community groups within Brighton & Hove through the UTCF. Over the last few weeks, the council have been busy working with volunteering groups to plant 101 of those trees. All trees subsidised by the UTCF are eligible for registration

on the database of the Queen’s Green Canopy, a tree planting initiative to mark Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee. A part-time watering position has been funded to ensure trees survive their first few years. However, if you’re part of a group and available to carry out any local watering as a willing tree custodian, it’s always welcome. To register an interest, email arboriculture@brighton-hove.gov.uk.
