HOVE PARK Another historical offering from local resident, Tony Pelling...

TALES OF GOLDSTONE BOTTOM... BOYS WILL BE BOYS It is approaching 200 years since the most attractive man-made feature of Goldstone Bottom was constructed. Many tales are told of the beautiful West Blatchington Mill situated on the north-west edge of our valley and one favourite amongst them is of poor old henpecked Rounderby. He was the local tarring expert employed to waterproof barn roofs and other structures and, each time he came to work on the mill, crowds gathered to witness the performance. Once in the cradle which lifted him high on the mill he angered his wife by refusing to come down till the end of the day. Sparks flew. But safe in his cradle (oh! blessed cradle) and egged on by the crowd (“You tell her, boy”) it was the only time he dared give as good as he got. Some agreed that it was the best entertainment in town. The mill which poor Rounderby worked hard to preserve was put in severe jeopardy in May 1936 when a huge fire engulfed a barn and other nearby farm buildings. The seat of the blaze was discovered to be in a hay wagon where it is believed young lads had been smoking (well, that’s what lads do!). Were it not for the action of the fire brigade, who played five jets onto the sweeps, and a favourable wind direction, the mill would have been totally destroyed.

PREMIER WINDOWS

Doors and Conservatories

Another example of boys at their pleasure took place in 1809 in the presence of the future King George IV when 4,000 troops gathered in Goldstone Bottom in preparation for a sham attack on the village of Hove. The action began at 11am and with thrust and counter thrust went on for the rest of the day until the defenders emerged triumphant. Officially and craftily listed as “military manoeuvres”, my guess is that “boys’ games” would be more accurate. By contrast young Nigel Vaughan Thomas aged 13 acted alone when in 1980 he crawled under the Chipperfield’s Circus tent and disturbed a bull elephant which promptly lifted him aloft and threw him. The alarm was raised by a passer by and though Nigel had to undergo emergency surgery he made a full recovery. Almost 100 years earlier in 1885 another lone miscreant, Edward Hayer aged nine, got off rather more lightly with a mere caution after being found guilty of causing 6 pence worth of damage to potatoes on Goldstone Farm. A tale is told of the wise woman of Foredown Hill who at dead of night came to perform a naked ritual round the Goldstone in order to replenish her powers. Plenty of Peeping Toms about then, I bet. Well - boys will be boys! Tony Pelling

6 Meet the man in charge of your local PCSOs......

NEIGHBOURHOOD POLICIN How long have you been with Sussex Police? This is my 20th year as a Sussex police officer. I have served in most parts of the county and came to Brighton four years ago. I am in charge of Hove and East Brighton Neighbourhood Policing Teams which consist of supervisors and a number of Police Community Support Officers who are responsible for your area. What is the best part of your job? Quite simply, the people. I have been lucky enough to work with some excellent officers and police staff over my career. You need a sense of humour to do this job and an ability to deal with almost anything. I have met some superb examples of public spirited people over the years too and continue to do so within my role in Brighton. I have also met a number of non-public spirited people who continue to impact on the lives of others; my job is to stop them. What are the challenges that you face? Policing has changed and in order for us to look after the public we must change with it. Police and the public

NG TEAM INSPECTOR – PAUL RANSOME can all remember ‘the good old days’ or were they? We must prioritise our work based on threat, harm, risk and vulnerability and can’t continue to do the ‘nice to do’ things. We have to get the most out of every officer and work efficiently to ensure we make a difference to people’s lives and keep them safe. We cannot always get it right but we should do what is important well. What are your interests outside work? Sadly my football career is coming to an end and I have recently taken up football refereeing. I am kicking myself for waiting so long as I thoroughly enjoy it. How can we help you in your work? This is the really important bit; the simple answer is support us by calling in suspicious activity or provide evidence so that we can deal properly with suspects and offenders. I am a big believer in positive action whether via diversion schemes or court, but I am frustrated when we don’t have the evidence to prosecute. Please help us to make Brighton a better place to live and work.

HOVE PARK Introducing the next ‘healthy living’ article written by local personal trainer and nutrition adviser Mary Henderson...

HEALTHY LIVING...SUPPLEMENTS Recently I was asked whether everyone should be taking a multivitamin to help guard against illness. We know we need to get adequate vitamins and minerals to stay fighting fit so taking a daily supplement might seem like a good insurance policy. Deficiency is definitely not a good thing and there are certainly times when prescribing supplements is necessary to support good health. However, it must be made clear that too much of certain vitamins or minerals can lead to toxicity and ill health. Overthe-counter availability of supplements allows us to self-diagnose deficiencies. Ads encourage us to adopt a routine of daily supplementation. Whilst some of us can benefit from topping up on certain vitamins, some of us will be spending money needlessly, or, a worse case scenario, these sugar-coated pills could be doing us harm. Check with your GP before starting a regime and read labels carefully. We all have slightly different daily requirements, which is why the national recommendations are set to ensure most people fall within a range to avoid excess or deficiency.

for a healthy diet of balance, variety, a rainbow of fruit and veg and freshness. Nature has been very clever to package nutrients together in a way our bodies can make best use of. Good sources of dietary information include the Change 4 Life or the British Dietetic Association websites.

The ideal situation is to get all the nutrition you need in food form. Supplements can never be a substitute

HOVE PARK The man behind the cover shots. From Stephen Batey, the fifth in a series of articles about photography...

PHOTOGRAPHY - TAKE YOUR TIME We see both more and less than our eyes take in. We see more in that we automatically seek out patterns and adjust what we see to fit, such as seeing a “face” in a rock formation. When the first photograph was made in 1826 the low sensitivity of the materials to light meant that an exposure time of six hours was required. The development of more sensitive materials enabled Louis Daguerre to take the first photograph of people in 1838, the ten minute exposure time registering a boot boy and his customer as shadowy figures. View it at: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Boulevard_du_Temple_by_Daguerre.jpg You can use this method to photograph a building interior or street scene minus the crowds - I’ve seen an exposure of 45 minutes showing an apparently deserted York Minster. If the exposure isn’t quite long enough to make people “disappear”, you may end up with the impression of ghosts, as in this photograph of the Chapter House steps in Wells Cathedral. Using different exposure times provides various creative possibilities. Whereas a fast shutter speed freezes water movement, an exposure of around a second can pictur-

chickenshed design

Kids Fun Rooms

esquely blur the motion. With a longer exposure the sea can be turned into a millpond, possibly with ethereallooking water passing around or over rocks. Star trails in the night sky can be imaged either with a single long exposure or a series of short exposures (a few minutes each) which can be combined in Photoshop. If your long exposure gives a bleached out image, you can reduce the light by using a neutral density filter, which come in different strengths to reduce the light to anything from a half to a thousandth. In order to keep the camera still during a long exposure, a tripod is usually the best solution. Other alternatives include a bean bag, clamp, or simply standing the camera on a rigid surface. A remote release is advisable. For this night-time photograph in Hove Park an exposure time of 4 seconds with a tripod was used.

HOVE PARK If you are a fan of musical theatre this is a must see show being performed locally in Hove Park...

LES MISÉRABLES AT HOVE PARK SCHOOL On 10th and 11th February, Hove Park School are to present Les Misérables Schools Edition, a specially adapted version of the musical based on the famous novel written by Victor Hugo. It is a tale that spans decades and charts the journey of one man, Jean Valjean, from convict to town mayor, to fugitive and then finally to revolutionary hero. The novel was popular from its first publication and remains to capture the hearts and souls of its audience, so it was a tough but exciting decision to put the show on this year. There were a few factors that have made this year the perfect one for Hove Park School to produce Les Misérables Schools Edition. There had been a few requests from pupils over the years and I (Drama Teacher, Susan Woodbridge) also was keen to hear the songs once again as I had been an office junior to Sir Cameron Mackintosh (the producer) several years ago and had been involved in the show. However I think the overriding factor was the abundance of singing talent throughout the whole school, so it gives a wonderful opportunity for the older Year 13 students to sing their final farewell to Hove Park through the monumental roles of Valjean and Javert, while the younger characters such as Éponine, Cosette and Marius are depicted by KS3 and 4 students, and last but not least the child characters such as Gavroche and the young Éponine are from Year 7 and 8 respectively. This casting gift however was not realised until the auditions, last September, when we had over 100 students audition or express an interest in getting involved by painting the set or creating costumes. Since then we have been rehearsing every week and we were able to perform at the Winter Upper School Concert; this was received with rapturous applause as the school orchestra played with the students for the first time. It created quite a buzz and everyone is really looking forward to the performances.

To buy tickets, please use the school webshop (http://www.hovepark.brighton-hove.sch.uk/shows) or purchase from the foyer reception at the Valley site (in Hangleton Way) or the Nevill site (in Nevill Road). The show is open to the general public and tickets will be £7 for adults and £4 for students.

It was just to the south of the road, a few yards away, and adjoined a long barn. HOVE PARK Here is your regular update from the Friends of Three Cornered Copse...

NEWS FROM THE FRIENDS OF THREE CORNERED COPSE The Friends of Three Cornered Copse has been in existence since 2008, when along with other “Friends” groups, we were encouraged by the council of the day to form, with a view to supplementing the care of Brighton & Hove’s green spaces by the City Parks department and its park rangers. You’ll find a Friends Group for Hove Park, Green Ridge, TWEACK, Hollingbury and Burstead Woods and so on, who volunteer to work occasionally in these spaces to maintain the paths and promote the well-being of the green spaces. The groups work closely with the nine park rangers in Brighton & Hove, who provide tools, clear away rubbish in their vehicles, and offer guidance on treating vegetation, planting and other projects. In November last year, the council made a decision to save £175,000 from their budget, by devising a proposal for cutting the number of park rangers from nine to three. The rangers were texted by their management to inform them that their jobs were at risk. By reducing this team to three, the council will effectively end the work of the Friends groups around

our city. Our parks and green spaces will suffer, litter will accumulate, paths overgrow and fences will remain unmended. A petition to save the park rangers has begun, started by their union, the GMB. The address is given below. For just a small amount of money a great deal of difference is made; let’s hope the ranger service can be saved. More money than this is regularly found for outgoing chief executives. In the meantime the copse remains one of the muddiest places in town, as I write, in January, after one of the wettest winters in recent years. Only the dedicated dogwalkers, or the courageous mountain bikers, are to be found paddling through the deeply filled paths. When the water from the heavy rainfall tries to find its way downhill, streams have formed which track through the woods, clearing debris, and leaving a strange meandering path. Our work day for 16 January was cancelled because of the condition in the copse. But also because Garry Meyer, our assigned park ranger, was unwell. Our best wishes to Garry and his colleagues as they wait to hear the decision on their future. Let’s hope that we haven’t had our last work day; there’s always plenty to do each season. http://www.gmb-southern.org.uk/brighton-rangers/

HOVE PARK Here is an activity for your babies and children...

MUSICAL BUMPS Hello, I’m Belinda and I teach Musical Bumps classes in Brighton and Hove. We offer top quality, friendly music classes to share with babies, toddlers and pre-school children. We use traditional songs and rhymes, musical games and percussion from around the world. Our repertoire is chosen to enable children to learn. The songs and games we use all have a purpose. We like to keep up to date - thus ensuring that Musical Bumps fully supports the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum. We know that children learn best through play - our classes are playful and engaging. We have enough percussion and puppets for everyone to use, as well as colourful resources. We believe that music education for the very young is so important to a child’s wellbeing and development. Music benefits all areas of learning. For example, it can support speech and language, social skills, fine and gross motor development, increased confidence, musical skills and much more, all of which is pivotal to a child’s happiness, growth and learning. Our classes provide the perfect opportunity for you and your child to share time making music and singing, whilst having fun. Refreshments are provided too, giving everyone a chance to get to know each other.

Come along and see for yourself, book a FREE TASTER SESSION and join the class in action. • Babies (from newborn) • 1 – 2 years • 2 – 3 years mixed age classes. Contact me, Belinda McBride: 07582 256957 belinda.mcbride@musicalbumps.com www.musicalbumps.com

Is Pain ruining your life? Having suffered with a bad back for very many years I finally came on the recommendation of a friend. I am very pleased, not only has my back improved enormously under their care but I have felt encouraged to keep up a good fitness regime. Kathy
