Here’s hoping that the weather will be kind to us in September so that we can enjoy the Heritage Open Days festival, with many local places open to visit free of charge. We feature another new councillor in Fiveways this month – Siriol Hugh-Jones, who tells us what she’d like to achieve in the area. We also feature the chairman of Hollingbury Hawks Youth Football Club, Sean Garrick, and we hear from the owner of the beautiful garden featured on last month’s front cover. We welcome your feedback – do let us know what you like and don’t like in the magazine. The Fiveways Directory Team info@fivewaysdirectory.co.uk www.fivewaysdirectory.co.uk

A NEW TYPE OF DINER

We offer incredible new versions of food and drink that you might find familiar. We have sodas made in house with some help from our centrifuge machine. They have around one tenth of the sugar of regular sodas. Our cocktails are crafted with loving care using house made essences, bitters and artisanal spirits. Some of our cakes have no added sugar. Some are completely dairy free. We are really proud of our velvety, house made, organic cashew and tiger nut milk blend.

Our coffee has to be tasted to be believed. We only use the best butter, virgin coconut oil (for our many non dairy/vegan creations) and extra virgin olive oil for dressing. Our tea is brewed in clean glass, to the perfect temperature.

Everything we have is completely free of gluten. That's right, everything. Even our house made sourdough, sweet bakes and our buttermilk pancakes. Our aim is excellence as standard. We make super food for super people.

QUIZ QUESTION ONE:

â–

What is both a French wine region and a luxury American automobile?

fiveways The third in a series of interviews with new councillors in Fiveways...

MEET LOCAL COUNCILLOR SIRIOL HUGH-JONES Siriol Hugh-Jones was elected in May as a Green Party councillor for Preston Park ward. Do you live in this part of Brighton? Yes, I have lived in the Preston Park ward ever since I moved to Brighton & Hove in 2007. Tell us about your background... I grew up in South Wales, in Mountain Ash, a former mining village not far from the infamous Aberfan. By the time I was growing up in the 1970s most of the pits had closed and the main sources of employment were a phurnacite plant and an electronics factory. I left Wales to study German and Russian at Newnham College, Cambridge University and later did a law conversion course in Chester. Since then, I have lived in northern Portugal, Munich, Moscow, London and Brighton and my career has been a mix of languages, music and law.

What made you want to become a councillor? I worry hugely about the climate emergency. It is one thing to declare it, but the challenge now is to introduce the necessary measures to address it. This is exacerbated by the obstructions created by national government – the cutting of feed-in tariffs for renewables, the lack of investment in public transport and continued emphasis on road-building and the airline industry etc. For the last three years, the government’s attention has been completely sidetracked on Brexit. I think Brexit – and particularly a “no deal” Brexit – will be a disaster. But it is really not on the same scale as the failure to mitigate the climate emergency. I would like to be instrumental in seeing Brighton & Hove take a lead in addressing this. What do you hope to achieve in the Fiveways area? I would love to help make it a safer, healthier environment where parents can allow their children to walk or cycle to school without worrying about traffic. Fiveways is full of creative people with a social conscience and I would like to work with them to be the change we all want to see. Amy Heley, Leo Littman and I are planning a “Meet your Councillor” session on 10 September in the Fiveways area (venue tbc).

Both Nurseries OFSTED Outstanding

What are your interests outside politics? I am a cellist and founder member of the Brighton Chamber Ensemble. We regularly perform in and around Brighton and have been invited to play in a festival in London this month (August). Music has always been a fantastic emotional outlet. You can contact Siriol by emailing: Siriol.Hugh-Jones@brighton-hove.gov.uk or phone 07562 437623.

fiveways A great annual opportunity to visit new places...

HERITAGE OPEN DAYS 2019 It’s the 25th year of the Heritage Open Days festival, England’s largest festival of history and culture. It’s an opportunity to visit some places not ordinarily accessible, and everything is free, although some events must be booked. This year the festival will run for 10 consecutive days, from 13th to 22nd September, and the theme is “People Power” in recognition of the 200th anniversary of the Peterloo Massacre. The city’s local history project, “Here in the Past”, explores who lived in your house before you and the life experiences of former residents. As part of the festival, on Monday 16 September several streets in Fiveways will have a desk on site for 30 minutes each, where you can meet volunteers involved with the project. The streets included are: Grantham Road, Southdown Avenue, Rugby Road, Florence Road, Beaconsfield Villas, Havelock Road, Waldegrave Road and Chester Terrace. fiveways Meet the chairman of Hollingbury Hawks Youth Football Club...

LOCAL PERSON... SEAN GARRICK Sean Garrick of Edburton Avenue has been a resident of Fiveways for nearly 30 years and runs Garrick Architects. He is also chairman of Hollingbury Hawks Youth Football Club. How long have you been running Garrick Architects? 13 years ago it all started. In those days the company was called Garrick and Team. The Team consisted of me, a clapped out computer and my labrador. What kind of projects do you take on? We love working on domestic projects mainly because it gives us a chance to meet real people and talk about important stuff like their homes and family. The first time I meet a client (often a couple) I call it my marriage guidance session because it can often get heated and emotional. That’s the part of the job I like most. We still work on commercial projects although nowadays I try to avoid dealing with shareholders and money people which I find a bit soulless. How did you get involved with Hollingbury Hawks? As a student I coached football on American summer camps. Years later when my sons turned up and started to show an interest in football I decided to retrain as an FA coach. I knew if I wasn’t the manager that I would end up being one of those shouty interfering parents. How did the team do last season? Fantastic. The team I’m currently coaching is relatively new and last season was only their 2nd full season. For that reason alone they did really well and will continue to improve. They are a great bunch and eager to learn. That said I feel proud of all our boys and girls in the club. This season we are looking to sign over 250 players. We currently have 16 teams including four girls’ teams so I feel we are doing something right. What else do you like to do in your spare time? I am a season ticket holder and spend my Saturday afternoons watching Whitehawk FC.

To me it’s real (grass roots) football. To be honest once you have coached a children’s football team the idea of watching polished premiership football loses its appeal. I also spend (according to my wife) too much time at the Cleveland but it’s a relaxed and friendly pub and I’m lucky enough to have it on my doorstep. For more information, call 07816 835355, email sean@garrickarchitects.co.uk or visit www.garrickarchitects.co.uk.

fiveways An event for all dog lovers...

CRAFTY DOG FESTIVAL IN PRESTON PARK 21st SEPTEMBER, PRESTON PARK, 10am-4pm, FREE ENTRY The “Say Aphasia” charity is introducing The Crafty Dog Festival on Saturday 21st September in Preston Park. You will be able to enjoy a day out with your dog and meet other dogs and owners. The day will include: a fun dog show, agility classes and other have-a-go activities, stalls with local homemade dog treats and handmade dog accessories, chances to win great prizes, and much more! “Say Aphasia” is a charity which supports people with aphasia, a communication disability which occurs when the communication centres of the brain are damaged. It is usually caused by a stroke, brain haemorrhage, head injury or brain tumour. Aphasia makes it difficult to read, write or speak. It affects people differently - some people are unable to speak at all, others may have difficulty finding the right words to say or have difficulty reading, writing or using numbers. It affects relationships, employment, education, social lives and confidence. Aphasia affects around 350,000 people in the UK. The fact that this condition is rarely heard of contributes to the loneliness that sufferers experience.

The Say Aphasia charity provides weekly drop-in groups for people with aphasia to meet others in the same situation, to help reduce loneliness and increase confidence. The Crafty Dog Festival aims to raise funds and awareness for the charity, while bringing together the local community to celebrate dogs.

In which sport would you see a Fosbury flop?

fiveways News from the council...

COUNCIL BEGINS REMOVING WEED GROWTH The council has begun an extensive weed removal programme after pledging to become a pesticide-free city. A team of eight will join existing staff who are already touring the city to remove weeds by hand and with tools as the council reduces the use of toxic herbicide glyphosate and explores new weed control technology. The council has been aware of the amount of weeds in the city, but has waited until the growth has developed before taking steps. The team has already cleared the Bristol Estate of weeds as well as deep cleaning the pavements, and has moved onto other areas in the city. A major step forward to becoming pesticide-free Cllr Anne Pissaridou, chair of the council’s Environment, Transport and Sustainability (ETS) committee, said: “Stopping the use of glyphosate is a major step forward in making sure the city, its residents, wildlife and environment are all pesticide-free. It will always be the case that stopping the use of pesticides will mean more weeds, but this new team will control growth in the short-term while we investigate the use of new technologies including hot foam and infra-red technology.” Council taking expert advice The council is working closely with the Brighton-based Pesticide Action Network, experts in how to become pesticide-free. A plan is being developed to end the use of the toxic weed killer in all the city’s parks, open spaces, pavements, verges and housing land within three years. Cllr Pissaridou added: “We have already started to reduce the amounts of glyphosate used in city parks, housing land and public highways. However, we believe we can accelerate the reduction in use.”

But many experts, including Pesticide Action Network and the Soil Association, believe it causes cancer in humans while destroying the environment and wildlife.

The harmful effects of glyphosate

A report will go to the next ETS committee in October. In the meantime no glyphosate will be used in the city’s parks while the impact is monitored and alternative solutions are trialled.

Glyphosate, commonly known by its original trade name Roundup, is a toxic herbicide and the world’s most widely sold weed killer.

Residents who would like excessive weeds removed from public land can contact Cityclean on 01273 292929 or email cityclean@brighton-hove.gov.uk.

Which anti-social television character does not like pickles?

fiveways Lauren Alex Hooper, who grew up in Fiveways, tells us about her first single which is raising money for the charity Young Minds...

INVISIBLE by LAUREN ALEX HOOPER Just over a year ago, I released my first single, ‘Invisible’, a song about my experiences with mental illness and the difficulty I had getting support. I’ve probably struggled with anxiety and depression for most of my life but it wasn’t until I was about 17 that they got really bad. Me and my mum talked to doctor after doctor but they either didn’t listen or they dismissed me outright. One doctor even said that maybe that is just how my life was going to be. It was a very traumatic process. Fortunately I did eventually find someone who listened to me and believed me but not without a lot of time, expense and pain. I was in my third year of university, studying songwriting at The Institute of Contemporary Music Performance in London, when I was challenged to write a protest song. I had never written anything like that so I didn’t really know what to write about and I was anxious about not doing it justice. I talked to practically everyone I knew and they all said I should write about mental health, specifically my experience with doctors and the health system that refused to help me. So, determined to get it right, I went to my most trusted co-writer, Richard Sanderson. It was probably the most difficult song I’ve ever tried to write: I felt like I was dragging the words out of myself and it was a painful experience. I worried that it would be too honest but every time I doubted myself, Richard told me to keep going, keep being honest. That was the only way I was going to be really proud of it. It was a bit of a turning point for me. It’s when I really realised that that’s what music is about for me: it’s about sharing real, honest stories and experiences. It feels fitting that the first song I put out into the world would be about something so important to me. It also feels incredibly important to me that all the proceeds of

BELLS WALL & FLOOR TILING 01273 561160 07708584220

the song go to Young Minds, a charity raising awareness and supporting young people with their mental health. Since then, I’ve released the music video and started visiting schools and organisations to perform the song and share my experience. Hopefully I can help to raise awareness, which will in turn improve the experience of getting help with mental health. QUIZ QUESTION TEN: What was the name of Sonny Crockett’s pet alligator in the cult TV series Miami Vice?

fiveways This article is by the creator of the beautiful garden on last month’s front cover...

WILDFLOWERS FOR BEAUTY AND BEES... I was delighted to see our urban meadow featured on the August cover of the Fiveways Directory. I am training to become a Landscape Architect, so the meadow was my opportunity to experiment and learn. I wanted to create a low maintenance space that is stunning to look at whilst providing a haven for wildlife. We have had fantastic feedback from neighbours and passers-by and the bees seem very happy too. I’ve been asked about the process I went through; here are a few highlights. Seed mix

35

I chose a perennial mix called ‘Treasure Chest’ from Pictorial Meadows. It is rich in species that provide food for wildlife, from pollinators to birds. Pictorial Meadows mixes are different from traditional style meadows and are designed for dramatic colourful displays with a longer flowering period and, crucially, are suitable for normal to high fertility soils. Soil preparation This was an essential step and had to be done thoroughly. The corner section of our front garden was overgrown by weeds. I did not want to use herbicides, so my husband and I spent a few months weeding manually. We were grateful to many of you who stopped for a chat and wished us luck.

The meadow burst into flower very quickly: first came meadow buttercups and oriental poppies, followed by musk mallow, common yarrow and Macedonian scabious among other species.

Maintenance It was emotionally tough cutting down the flowers in mid-July – they were beautiful and buzzing with wildlife – but the one-off summer establishment cut in the first season is important. It allows smaller and slower species to develop and suppresses the more dominant Sowing ones. New flowers started to come through just two weeks after the cut. Next comes the annual cut and Once we had removed most of the weeds (but never collect, which I will do in autumn leaving a few seed eliminated them completely as the soil was full of weed heads for birds. seeds), we laid about 10cm of sterile mulch. We used KPS Fine Compost; it was vital for suppressing weeds and I am excited to see how the meadow evolves over the next few years, hopefully inspiring others to sow giving the meadow a chance to establish. I sowed the seeds in early December and the first seedlings appeared wildflowers. in early April, to our great relief! Marina Watkins Southdown Road

fiveways Free PSA tests organised by Brighton Lions at Bishop Hannington Church...

An annual sporting event...

FREE PSA TEST FOR PROSTATE PROBLEMS

SCOOTATHLON ACCOMPANIES TRIATHLON

The PSA test is a blood test that measures the amount of prostate specific antigen (PSA) in your blood.

This September will see the fourth Brighton & Hove Triathlon on Hove Lawns.

PSA is a protein produced by normal cells in the prostate and also by prostate cancer cells. It’s normal to have a small amount of PSA in your blood, and the amount rises as you get older and your prostate gets bigger. A raised PSA level may suggest you have a problem with your prostate, but not necessarily cancer.

Children aged 3-8 can compete in the Scootathlon – scoot, bike and run - thanks to Race Director John Lunt who is passionate about getting young people active. He said: “Last year we had 140 children aged between 3-8 years of age racing along Hove seafront and the atmosphere was fantastic.”

37

Brighton Lions, in conjunction with the Prostate Cancer Support Organisation, are holding a PSA testing session on Saturday 28th September 2019 at Bishop Hannington Church, Nevill Avenue. The test involves a trained nurse taking a blood sample which is sent to a hospital laboratory for analysis. The tests are free to men aged 45-80. Book an appointment online at www.psatesting.org/ events/hove or, if you cannot book online, call 0845 650 2555.

This year’s Scootathlon is on Saturday 14th September at noon. The Children’s Triathlon (8-15) and Adult Triathlon are on Sunday 15th September. For more information, visit www.brightonandhovetriathlon.com
