WELCOME

Welcome

to the annual Cowfold Village Hall Directory. One of a series of Village Directories in Sussex. This directory is delivered free of charge to every home and business in Cowfold and the surrounding area. It contains details of the local clubs, societies, churches etc. In fact all the information that is useful to residents. Village Directories keep residents informed, shopping locally and using local services. Our aim is to support the community and the directory devotes 50% of its content free of charge to useful local information. This publication is made entirely possible by local trades and services who advertise. Please make every effort to support them and to mention that you saw the advert in The Cowfold Village Hall Directory. We will soon have our new website available where this edition will be uploaded. There will also be a directory of all the local businesses advertising with us and we are also planning for it to have the community information also available in an easy to use directory style format The address is www.villagedirectories.com and the new website will replace the basic website we already have in the next few months. We hope you find the Directory useful and that you keep it to hand for the whole year until the next one arrives. COWFOLD VILLAGE HALL COWFOLD VILLAGE HALL Cowfold Village Hall has been the centre for village life in Cowfold since it was first opened to celebrate Queen Victoria’s jubilee in 1896. The Hall was donated to the village by Fredrick Du Cane Godman having been built on the site of an old saw pit owned by Fowlers, the local builders, in the centre of the village. A deal was struck between Fowlers and Godman where land changed hands and Fowlers now reside on land originally owned by Godman, near the Hare & Hounds. Part of the deal was that Fowlers were contracted to build the hall. The hall continues to be the venue for weddings, parties, dances, meetings and local clubs. If you have any enquiries about bookings for your special event or any other queries please give the Caretaker a call and he will be pleased to help with the arrangements. BOOKINGS: TELEPHONE:

Changes to paying for care in later life The law from April 2016 and Social Care – i.e. care in your own home If you live in your own home in England and are assessed by your local authority as sufficiently qualifying for “social care” – so that’s things like help with getting out of bed, and assistance with washing, and maybe help with getting a meal and that type of thing – the amount you will have to pay for that care will depend on the value of your assets which will not include the value of your own home. This is a very good reason why having a Health and Welfare Lasting Power of Attorney grant in place is a good idea as it will enable your designated Attorney to insist (where practicable) that you remain in your own home for as long as possible and have care brought in to you. You’ll receive free social care in your home if you have savings below £17,500. If you’ve got assets of £17,500 - £118,000 you’ll have to contribute towards all costs on a sliding scale and if you’ve more than £118,000 in savings you’ll have to pay the total cost. You will have a cap on all your contributions during your life of £72,000.

The law from April 2016 and Residential Care – i.e. going into a care home If you need residential care, the amount you’ll pay will depend on the total value of your assets including the value of your home if there is no dependant or spouse living in it. If you have assets under £17,500, the local authority will cover the complete cost of your fees. If you’ve assets of £17,500 - £118,000 you’ll pay a proportion of your fees and if you have assets above £118,000 you’ll have to pay the full cost of both your personal care costs and your bed and board, or what are known as “hotel” costs. There will be a cap on the amount you contribute during your lifetime of £72,000 but this only applies to the care element of your fees not the board and lodgings aspect which are proposed to be capped at £12,000 per year.

COWFOLD VILLAGE HISTORY SOCIETY

New Members most welcome.

The Society is an established part of village life and its events are very well attended. The Society has started an archive and aims to promote the history of Cowfold from its earliest times to the present day. Quarterly meetings with a guest speaker are usually held in the Village Hall, there are also members only events. One project is to ‘Capture the voice of Cowfold’ by recording residents’ memories of living in the village. We are also researching the men of Cowfold who fought in World War One. As a result we will be holding a Village History Day on Saturday 19th September to display the information we have discovered. New members are welcome.

One of the key objectives is fund raising so that measures can be finally put in place to improve the quality of driving through the village. The group has raised enough money to purchase a number of vehicle activated signs (VAS), which will hopefully be installed very soon but we are just waiting for Council approval for the site.
